ABOUT FIELD TRIP REPORT
The purpose of the trip is usually observation for education non-
experimental research or to provide students with experiences outside
their everyday activities, such as going camping with teachers and their
classmates. The aim of this research is to observe the subject in its
natural state and possibly collect samples. It is seen that more-
advantaged children may have already experienced cultural institutions
outside of school, and field trips provide a common ground with more-
advantaged and less-advantaged children to have some of the same
cultural experiences in the arts.
Field trips are most often done in 3 steps: preparation, activities and
follow-up activity. Preparation applies to both the student and the
teacher. Teachers often take the time to learn about the destination and
the subject before the trip. Activities that happen on the field trips often
include: lectures, tours, worksheets videos and demonstrations. Follow-
up activities are generally discussions that occur in the classroom once
the field trip is completed.

SCOPE OF ADVENTURE TOURISM IN HIMACHAL
PRADESH
For sheer geographic diversity, few places in the world are as richly
endowed as Himachal Pradesh. Rivers cutting through deep gorges,
placid mountain lakes, thick forests, acres of scree, snow capped
mountains piercing the skyline, sheep scattered like cotton fluffs over
alpine pastures; all excite the spirit for outdoor activities, sports and
adventure. A stress buster or a challenging adventure, for the beginner or
an expert, there is an activity, a sport, an adventure for one and all out
there. All it demands is a reasonable level of fitness and a willing spirit.
WHITE WATER RIVER RAFTING HIMACHAL PRADESH
(KULLU)
Rushing downstream with the strong river flows, negotiating turbulent
rapids, water droplets hitting you in the face; white water rafting is an
adventure sport that gets up the adrenalin working thick and fast.
Rivers born in Himalayan glacial valleys make a rapid descent before
entering the plains and on the course they have cut out graded stretches
that have attracted white water rafters from India and overseas.
Guided rafting is conducted on river Sutlej at Tattapani near Shimla, at
Pirdi on the Beas River near Kullu, on the Ravi River near Chamba, and
for the expert on the more daring rapids of Chandra, Spiti rivers in
Lahaul and Spiti district. Other than Himachal Tourism there are private
sector operators who conduct fun filled river rafting runs for tourists.
River Beas from Manali to Bhuntar, a stretch of 50 km with a number of
rapids, is most popular for recreational river rafting runs. Riding a raft
over gentle, sometimes foaming waves and dashing against rocks and
boulders is a thrill to experience.
For safety reasons rapids of rivers in Himachal have been graded in
accordance with international guidelines.
The categories are:-
Category I: Easy moving water, small waves, no obstacles, it’s a
relaxing way to spend the day.
Category II: Moderate difficulty, with clear passage and rapids rising to
as high as three feet, which can be seen tugging the boat.
Category III: Difficult, high irregular waves, narrow clear passage,
require precise manoeuvring as the water gushes over the sides of the
raft.
Category IV: Difficult long rapids, powerful irregular waves that
require precise manoeuvring as the water splashes on the face and sends
the heart racing.
Category V: Extremely difficult. Long violent and highly congested
rapids provide stimulating adrenaline rush but for the experienced only.
Category VI: Un-runnable, Only experts should attempt this.
Out of the many adventure sports opportunities available in the state,
river rafting is sure to be one of your most fun filled memorable
experiences lived.
STILL WATER SPORTS
Backwaters of dams built have created many manmade lakes on rivers
flowing through the state. These waters have become a sporting arena
for a variety of fun filled activities for the professional, and the amateur.
Damming of River Beas in 1975 created the huge lake christened as
Maharana Pratap Sagar. During heavy monsoon flows it expands to
cover an area of over 24,529 hectares.
The Regional Water Sports Centre at Pong Dam, run under the aegis of
Directorate of Mountaineering & Allied Sports, Manali, is equipped with
modern facilities and equipments. Basic, intermediate and advanced
courses are conducted in Swimming, Kayaking, Canoeing, Rowing,
Sailing and Water Skiing. Pong Dam centre also conducts trainings in
water safety and rescue operations.
Water sport activities for tourists are also conducted in Gobind Sagar
Lake at Bilaspur, in Chamera Lake near Dalhousie and Pandoh Lake on
the Mandi-Manali highway. For the experienced campaigners, rowing
and kayaking regattas are organized at Pong Dam and Gobind Sagar
Lake.
MOUNTAIN CYCLING
Blessed with breathtaking panoramas that make up a romantic backdrop,
Himachal Pradesh presents thrilling options for cycling. Gear yourself
up for high adventure with an expedition on cycles, pedal your way past
high passes or simply make a day-adventure in the scenic landscapes,
literally the entire state is your playground if you have the zeal to pedal.
If the gentle routes of Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur are
child’s play, stretch your mind, muscle and stamina to reach out to
the Trans-Himalayan tracks in Lahaul–Spiti, and Kinnaur. Milder
but no less interesting excursions can be done at any holiday destination
including Shimla, Dharamshala, Manali or the likes. A cycle tour can be
coupled with camping and scheduled for several days over diverse
terrains of the state.
The experts in mountain cycling test themselves against the best and
challenge their own limits at Asia’s premier mountain bike race –MTB
Himalaya held every year. The demanding route goes through some
treacherous and demanding off beaten trails. The competitive race is
usually held in September/October.
ICE SKATING
Open-air ice skating rink in Shimla is the best place to enjoy sliding and
tumbling on ice. A very popular sport in the western world but
conducted in very few places in India, the Shimla rink is the oldest one
in the country.
As temperatures begin to fall in December, the rink opens its gates for
ice-skaters who throng the place. There are two sessions every day, one
in the morning and another in the evening. Visitors can enjoy skating
under clear skies for a nominal fee; skates are provided at the rink. The
season usually lasts till February. Competitions in figure skating, speed
skating and ice hockey are held.
Around the Christmas – New Year’s, the ice skating carnival is a time
when daily festivities take on a fresh dimension. The swish of blades on
ice, tuned to the music, fancy dress competitions, waltzes and tangos on
ice, races and ice hockey matches are held before packed audiences. As
darkness falls, for the finale, lights are turned off. Holding blazing
torches aloft, skaters steadily glide out of the pavilion for a mesmeric
romance of fire and ice.
SALONG VALLEY MANALI
Paragliding is perhaps the closest you can get to sailing the skies as a
free bird, almost at will, dipping and wheeling high over the hills and
valleys. The recreational activity is dangerous but if done under strict
supervision, it’s thrilling and adventurous.
Paragliding can be done solo and tandem at Bir-Billing in
Kangra district. It is counted amongst the best paragliding sites
anywhere in the world and is frequently picked for hosting the World
Cup and other international competitions in the sport.
The rising hills of Billing provide amazing thermals that with a gush of
moderate winds make for a good take-off with the landing being at the
terraced grounds of Bir. Other delightful sites for paragliding
in Himachal include Bandla Dhar near Bilaspur and Solang valley
near Manali.
In solo paragliding, trained pilots fly alone in a paraglider, whereas in
Tandem flights, a trained pilot tags an amateur guest along in his glider
to have him experience the thrill of free flying. Tandem flights are what
most enthusiasts love to indulge in.
For those wanting to take up the adventure sport, Himachal Tourism
conducts training programmes at Bir and Dharamsala (Kangra).
ANGLING
A mountainous land with fast flowing glacial rivers and streams
abounds with many types of fishes, some of them being indigenous
breeds and some have been introduced to Himachal from European
waters. Trout, a cold stream fish introduced by the British,
and Mahseer, a warm water fish, are amongst the best gaming fishes for
anglers.
Selecting a spot, dangling a bait and being patient enough for a fish to
bite it is where the fun gets started. Letting the fishing line run as the
fish attempts to throw out the bait, to bring the catch in after the fish is
exhausted is as exciting as it can get. Releasing the fish back into the
waters after a successful catch is what the sport is all about.
Rainbow and brown trout thrive in cold streams of Pabbar in Rohru
valley, Baspa in Sangla valley, Uhl in Barot valley and Tirthan & Beas
Rivers of Kullu valley. Mahseer, especially the more sought after one
Golden Mahseer is found in the streams of Bilaspur, Kangra and the
backwaters of Bhakra Dam and Pong Dam.
Fishing is an regulated activity and anglers need licence for it. The
licence are available for rod and line in trout waters, and for rod, line
and cast netting in general waters.
TREKKING
Himalayas, the highest mountains in the world, is the best theatre for
ambitious adventure seekers. The thrill and excitement of trekking as an
adventure sport is a lifelong crush. With there being hundreds of trails
over low scrub land, through paddy fields and orchard country,
ascending mountain paths, crossing over fast flowing streams, across
deep woods, under oak, deodar or flowering rhododendron trees, to
glacial lakes, mountain top pilgrimage walks and others, Himachal is a
playground for trekkers.
The Indrahar Pass trek, Beas Kund trek, Chandratal trek, Kinner
Kailash trek, the Kareri Lake trek, Pin Parvati Pass trek, Bhawa
Pass trek, Friendship Peak trek, Hampta Pass trek, Chandratal
Baralacha trek, Sach Pass trek and Bara Bhangal Trekare just some
of the challenging routes that go over high altitude mountains and
passes. Many trails breakout from Chamba, Pangi Valley,
Bharmaur, Churah valley and in and around the Manimahesh
ranges that both challenge and satisfy man’s indomitable spirit for
adventure.
The Churdhar trek in Sirmaur; Hatu, Kuppar, Chanshal and the
mystic land of Dodra Kwar in Shimla; Sangla valley, Nako, Kalpa in
Kinnaur; Bashleo, Great Himalayan National Park, Solang –
Rohtang Valley in Kullu; Barot, Lake Prashar, Karsog Valley in
Mandi; Triund, Bara Bangal , Billing in Kangra; several routes in
Lahaul and Spiti, are a bounty of trekking options that the land holds.
Safety being a paramount concern when going out for a trekking
holiday, there are specialized operators who conduct guided
treks. Guides, equipment, porters, pack animals and maps are
available with these operators as well as with government agencies.
Old forest ‘dak bungalows’ in the deep woods on some trek routes are
always a pleasant surprise discovery. There are rest houses belonging to
State Electricity Board, Public Works Department (PWD), Forest
Department and other agencies on many routes that can be booked in
advance for a planned trek. Most of these are marked out on trekking
maps. Forest Rest Houses are booked by the area’s Divisional Forest
Officer (DFO), and the PWD and Electricity Board ones are booked by
the concerned Executive Engineers.
Training facilities, with basic and intermediate trekking courses are
conducted at:
1. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied
Sports, Manali (Kullu)
2. Regional centre at Dharamsala (Kangra)
3. Regional centre at Bharmaur (Chamba)
4. Mountaineering sub-centre Jispa (Lahaul & Spiti)
Trekking Basic Gear
1. Comfortable walking shoes with a good grip
2. Waterproof warm jacket. Woollen / tennis socks and stockings
3. Sunglasses, headgear, rucksack. Other types of bags are feasible
only if you plan to hire porters and ponies
4. Water bottle, Swiss Army knife
5. Tent, Sleeping bag and foam groundsheet
6. Gloves, Umbrella
7. Medical and first aid equipment
8. Photography equipment (if you want to return with memories for a
lifetime)
9. Torch with batteries
10. Compass, Binoculars, Cooking equipment, Food and ration
(fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and milk are rarely in short supply
along the trails apart from the higher reaches and parts of the Trans
Himalayas).
SKIING
Skiing, the thrill of racing down a slope with icy winds rushing at you is
an adventure sport which one will return to winter after winter, asking
for more. Himachal is one of the few places in the country where this
exciting sport is played.
Himachal Tourism offers ski courses, instruction and has equipment
on hire at Narkanda. In Manali, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of
Mountaineering and Allied Sports conducts professional and
amateur skiing courses on the slopes of Solang Nala, Rohtang
Pass and Hanuman Tibba. Several private operators also do conduct
recreational skiing for tourists.
Kufri, near Shimla, is one of the oldest places in India where skiing is
done. Rushing down the Mahasu Peak slopes with ski’s in Kufri is a
tourist’s delight.
MOUNTAINEERING & ROCK CLIMBING
Mountaineering is a daring adventure that needs rigorous training and
discipline. Not just a test of your bodies endurance to extremely hostile
environments, but being able to adapt to low oxygen altitudes, spending
nights in tents under – 30 degree Celsius temperatures or more and
surviving on rationed food supplies are all part of a training before one
heads out to scale a high peak.
Rock climbing is ascending a rock face by just using your hands and feet
with a safety rope. It is a basic capability needed before attempting
mountain climbing. It is also growing as a standalone adventure sport.
Several peaks in the Pir Panjal range, Dhauladhar and Greater
Himalaya ranges that lie across much of western and northern
Himachal are over 6000 meters high. Many such peaks in Lahaul are
unnamed and unscaled. Some of the highest peaks of Himachal are Reo
Purgyil 6,816 m, Rangrik Rang 6,553 m, Shilla 6,132 m and Gya 6,794
meters.
In the mountains around Rohtang Pass, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali (Kullu) conducts
training camps as well as climbing excursions to Beas Kund, Patalsu
Peak, Shitidhar Peak, Friendship Peak, Seven Sisters, Hanuman
Tibba, and Deo Tibba.
Training facilities, with basic, intermediate, advance mountaineering
courses are conducted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of
Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali (Kullu).
VEHICLE SAFARI
For those who love land cruising, the wide road network of Himachal
passes through some of the most exotic landscapes of the country.
Exploring the countryside by Car and the more difficult trans-himalayan
tracts in powerful 4×4 SUVs or in Group Motorbike safaris are a rage.
Roads’ being the only reliable means for travel in the state, Himachal
has invested much in connecting some of the remotest regions in the
entire Himalayas. Driving past deep gorges like the Tranada Cliffs in
Kinnaur or driving road to Pangi road has you admire the determination
and endurance of the workers and engineers who cut past vertical rock
formations to lay the road.
For the adventure motorist, driving on some of the world’s highest
roads, going over Rohtang (3980 m) or Kunzum Pass (4551 m) turns
into a challenge. The drive from Chandigarh – Shimla – Kinnaur –
Kaza – Keylong to Leh or through the alternate route of Chandigarh –
Mandi – Kullu – Manali – Keylong to Leh is a lifetime experience.
When driving through high altitude zones of Spiti, Lahaul, Chamba or
Kinnaur, the choice of vehicle, and the season chosen are of uttermost
importance. Cars may not be able to handle the rougher tracks but in no
way does this curtail the range of possible experiences. You can always
hire SUVs that are powerful enough to negotiate all roads, be they are
smooth or rough.
Motorcycle drives through Himachal are becoming increasingly popular
with domestic and international tourists making their way to Chamba
over Sach Pass, into Lahaul over Rohtang Pass or to the cold desert of
Spiti through Kinnaur. Those comfortable with riding two-wheelers have
an edge in negotiating difficult terrain and narrow paths. Often, these are
coupled with camping, trekking and a spot of dirt-riding.
Himachal is also the venue for several short and lengthier rallies and
motor-sport competitions, the most famous being the grueling ‘Raid de
Himalaya’.
CAMPING
Camping is perhaps the best way to enjoy the wonders of nature and
effortlessly partake of the warm hospitality of the inhabitants. Travellers
can carry their own gear along or opt for any one of the several
organized campsites pitched in various parts of the State.
Other than the comfortable accommodation, facilities and services, most
campsites offer catering, and a variety of activities such as hiking,
fishing, nature tours and rafting.
Himachal Pradesh Tourism and Private players in the industry have
adventure camps set up in places like Sarchu in Lahaul, Dalhousie in
Chamba, Barog and Chail in Solan, Sangla Valley and Kalpa in Kinnaur,
Tabo in Spiti, Al Hilal (Taragarh) & Dharamshala in Kangra, Shoja and
Kasol in Kullu valley and Mashobra, Baldian and Narkanda near
Shimla.
DAY HIKES
Whether you’re camping by a lake, rented home in an apple orchard,
staying in a hotel on the busy lanes of a Mall Road or living at a Home
Stay accommodation at a remote hamlet, just about every destination in
Himachal offers the possibility of day hikes, where you may leave in the
morning and return by evening.
These short walks may not require elaborate gear needed for longer
treks, but certain basic things may be kept in mind—wear a comfortable
pair of shoes and if you are taking one of the more rugged paths, then
something with a good grip on the ankles is recommended.
Carry water and a little snack, an umbrella or raincoat is recommended,
especially during the monsoons. Also be prepared for little drop in
temperature after sundown and wear or carry suitable clothes. Sunscreen
lotion, dark glasses and headgear are optional.
On the nature rambles do not leave the trail or spur, unless you are very
sure of where you are going – distances and directions can be deceptive,
it is suggested to take services of a guide.

CONCLUSION
The study tour is intended to make us familiar with various dimensions
of tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
India is land of diversity and has different culture style of living etc., a
close look to the culture, tradition, language and lifestyle of local
inhabitants in various part of the country is visible and beneficial for us.
The study tour benefited the participants to analyze and understand the
life and culture of the people of Manali nearby place. One can easily see
the signs of development in forms of electrified village, roads, fair price
shop, literate people, tourist help centers, etc cater the needs of tourists
as well as local resident. In additions to this, a vast possibility of
adventure and pilgrimage tourism is experienced by the team during
tour.
During the tour, we moved around extensively in Manali. We met
different people in different walks of tour in that’s area both the
religions i.e. Hinduism & Buddhism are viable.
EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS
Himachal Pradesh has too much to offer in terms of scenic beauty as
well as tourist attractions. This state with its rolling hills, snow capped
mountains; lush green field’s tourist attractions and activities offers a
lifelong experience to vistiors. On one hand, beautiful valley of kangra
and chamba present a realm of beauty and on the other hand adventure
activities and culture of this state builds the knowledge and confidence
of participants. Tourists from differents parts of globe are visible in the
famous spots like Triund, Mcleodganj, pilgrim destination etc. Friendly
and supporting nature of the localities makes the adventure easy and
memorable.
Himachal Pradesh a mix of old world charm and modernity place like
Mcleodganj, Dalhousie etc, trekking in Himanchal offers a diverse range
of terrain, Slopes. Flora & fauna snow capped mountain etc.
Therefore, I suggest everyone to visit this Himalayan state of India at
least once in a life.
SUGGESTIONS
 Tourist travelling to Himachal Pradesh especially trekkers
are advised to get knowledge regarding weather and
climate conditions of Himachal in priority and then make
travel arrangement (clothing, equipments etc) accordingly
 Tourist must try to maintain the cleanliness of the
destinations
 Visitors must not carry out any activity which can have
negative impact on environment.
 Be punctual while starting a trek otherwise you may have
to face difficulty returning late in the night.
 To promote Himachal as a wonderful tourist destination,
we need to have proper roads, accessible air fare, proper
Communications, from tour at unexplored destinations, etc
proper implication of these recommendations will result in
making Himachal a sustainable tourist destination.

  • 4. ABOUT FIELD TRIP REPORT The purpose of the trip is usually observation for education non- experimental research or to provide students with experiences outside their everyday activities, such as going camping with teachers and their classmates. The aim of this research is to observe the subject in its natural state and possibly collect samples. It is seen that more- advantaged children may have already experienced cultural institutions outside of school, and field trips provide a common ground with more- advantaged and less-advantaged children to have some of the same cultural experiences in the arts. Field trips are most often done in 3 steps: preparation, activities and follow-up activity. Preparation applies to both the student and the teacher. Teachers often take the time to learn about the destination and the subject before the trip. Activities that happen on the field trips often include: lectures, tours, worksheets videos and demonstrations. Follow- up activities are generally discussions that occur in the classroom once the field trip is completed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_trip

  • 21. SCOPE OF ADVENTURE TOURISM IN HIMACHAL PRADESH For sheer geographic diversity, few places in the world are as richly endowed as Himachal Pradesh. Rivers cutting through deep gorges, placid mountain lakes, thick forests, acres of scree, snow capped mountains piercing the skyline, sheep scattered like cotton fluffs over alpine pastures; all excite the spirit for outdoor activities, sports and adventure. A stress buster or a challenging adventure, for the beginner or an expert, there is an activity, a sport, an adventure for one and all out there. All it demands is a reasonable level of fitness and a willing spirit. WHITE WATER RIVER RAFTING HIMACHAL PRADESH (KULLU) Rushing downstream with the strong river flows, negotiating turbulent rapids, water droplets hitting you in the face; white water rafting is an adventure sport that gets up the adrenalin working thick and fast. Rivers born in Himalayan glacial valleys make a rapid descent before entering the plains and on the course they have cut out graded stretches that have attracted white water rafters from India and overseas.
  • 22. Guided rafting is conducted on river Sutlej at Tattapani near Shimla, at Pirdi on the Beas River near Kullu, on the Ravi River near Chamba, and for the expert on the more daring rapids of Chandra, Spiti rivers in Lahaul and Spiti district. Other than Himachal Tourism there are private sector operators who conduct fun filled river rafting runs for tourists. River Beas from Manali to Bhuntar, a stretch of 50 km with a number of rapids, is most popular for recreational river rafting runs. Riding a raft over gentle, sometimes foaming waves and dashing against rocks and boulders is a thrill to experience. For safety reasons rapids of rivers in Himachal have been graded in accordance with international guidelines. The categories are:- Category I: Easy moving water, small waves, no obstacles, it’s a relaxing way to spend the day. Category II: Moderate difficulty, with clear passage and rapids rising to as high as three feet, which can be seen tugging the boat. Category III: Difficult, high irregular waves, narrow clear passage, require precise manoeuvring as the water gushes over the sides of the raft. Category IV: Difficult long rapids, powerful irregular waves that require precise manoeuvring as the water splashes on the face and sends the heart racing. Category V: Extremely difficult. Long violent and highly congested rapids provide stimulating adrenaline rush but for the experienced only. Category VI: Un-runnable, Only experts should attempt this.
  • 23. Out of the many adventure sports opportunities available in the state, river rafting is sure to be one of your most fun filled memorable experiences lived. STILL WATER SPORTS Backwaters of dams built have created many manmade lakes on rivers flowing through the state. These waters have become a sporting arena for a variety of fun filled activities for the professional, and the amateur. Damming of River Beas in 1975 created the huge lake christened as Maharana Pratap Sagar. During heavy monsoon flows it expands to cover an area of over 24,529 hectares. The Regional Water Sports Centre at Pong Dam, run under the aegis of Directorate of Mountaineering & Allied Sports, Manali, is equipped with modern facilities and equipments. Basic, intermediate and advanced courses are conducted in Swimming, Kayaking, Canoeing, Rowing,
  • 24. Sailing and Water Skiing. Pong Dam centre also conducts trainings in water safety and rescue operations. Water sport activities for tourists are also conducted in Gobind Sagar Lake at Bilaspur, in Chamera Lake near Dalhousie and Pandoh Lake on the Mandi-Manali highway. For the experienced campaigners, rowing and kayaking regattas are organized at Pong Dam and Gobind Sagar Lake. MOUNTAIN CYCLING Blessed with breathtaking panoramas that make up a romantic backdrop, Himachal Pradesh presents thrilling options for cycling. Gear yourself up for high adventure with an expedition on cycles, pedal your way past high passes or simply make a day-adventure in the scenic landscapes, literally the entire state is your playground if you have the zeal to pedal. If the gentle routes of Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur are child’s play, stretch your mind, muscle and stamina to reach out to the Trans-Himalayan tracks in Lahaul–Spiti, and Kinnaur. Milder but no less interesting excursions can be done at any holiday destination including Shimla, Dharamshala, Manali or the likes. A cycle tour can be
  • 25. coupled with camping and scheduled for several days over diverse terrains of the state. The experts in mountain cycling test themselves against the best and challenge their own limits at Asia’s premier mountain bike race –MTB Himalaya held every year. The demanding route goes through some treacherous and demanding off beaten trails. The competitive race is usually held in September/October. ICE SKATING Open-air ice skating rink in Shimla is the best place to enjoy sliding and tumbling on ice. A very popular sport in the western world but conducted in very few places in India, the Shimla rink is the oldest one in the country. As temperatures begin to fall in December, the rink opens its gates for ice-skaters who throng the place. There are two sessions every day, one in the morning and another in the evening. Visitors can enjoy skating
  • 26. under clear skies for a nominal fee; skates are provided at the rink. The season usually lasts till February. Competitions in figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey are held. Around the Christmas – New Year’s, the ice skating carnival is a time when daily festivities take on a fresh dimension. The swish of blades on ice, tuned to the music, fancy dress competitions, waltzes and tangos on ice, races and ice hockey matches are held before packed audiences. As darkness falls, for the finale, lights are turned off. Holding blazing torches aloft, skaters steadily glide out of the pavilion for a mesmeric romance of fire and ice. SALONG VALLEY MANALI Paragliding is perhaps the closest you can get to sailing the skies as a free bird, almost at will, dipping and wheeling high over the hills and valleys. The recreational activity is dangerous but if done under strict supervision, it’s thrilling and adventurous. Paragliding can be done solo and tandem at Bir-Billing in Kangra district. It is counted amongst the best paragliding sites anywhere in the world and is frequently picked for hosting the World Cup and other international competitions in the sport.
  • 27. The rising hills of Billing provide amazing thermals that with a gush of moderate winds make for a good take-off with the landing being at the terraced grounds of Bir. Other delightful sites for paragliding in Himachal include Bandla Dhar near Bilaspur and Solang valley near Manali. In solo paragliding, trained pilots fly alone in a paraglider, whereas in Tandem flights, a trained pilot tags an amateur guest along in his glider to have him experience the thrill of free flying. Tandem flights are what most enthusiasts love to indulge in. For those wanting to take up the adventure sport, Himachal Tourism conducts training programmes at Bir and Dharamsala (Kangra). ANGLING A mountainous land with fast flowing glacial rivers and streams abounds with many types of fishes, some of them being indigenous breeds and some have been introduced to Himachal from European waters. Trout, a cold stream fish introduced by the British, and Mahseer, a warm water fish, are amongst the best gaming fishes for anglers.
  • 28. Selecting a spot, dangling a bait and being patient enough for a fish to bite it is where the fun gets started. Letting the fishing line run as the fish attempts to throw out the bait, to bring the catch in after the fish is exhausted is as exciting as it can get. Releasing the fish back into the waters after a successful catch is what the sport is all about. Rainbow and brown trout thrive in cold streams of Pabbar in Rohru valley, Baspa in Sangla valley, Uhl in Barot valley and Tirthan & Beas Rivers of Kullu valley. Mahseer, especially the more sought after one Golden Mahseer is found in the streams of Bilaspur, Kangra and the backwaters of Bhakra Dam and Pong Dam. Fishing is an regulated activity and anglers need licence for it. The licence are available for rod and line in trout waters, and for rod, line and cast netting in general waters. TREKKING Himalayas, the highest mountains in the world, is the best theatre for ambitious adventure seekers. The thrill and excitement of trekking as an adventure sport is a lifelong crush. With there being hundreds of trails over low scrub land, through paddy fields and orchard country, ascending mountain paths, crossing over fast flowing streams, across deep woods, under oak, deodar or flowering rhododendron trees, to glacial lakes, mountain top pilgrimage walks and others, Himachal is a playground for trekkers. The Indrahar Pass trek, Beas Kund trek, Chandratal trek, Kinner Kailash trek, the Kareri Lake trek, Pin Parvati Pass trek, Bhawa Pass trek, Friendship Peak trek, Hampta Pass trek, Chandratal Baralacha trek, Sach Pass trek and Bara Bhangal Trekare just some of the challenging routes that go over high altitude mountains and passes. Many trails breakout from Chamba, Pangi Valley, Bharmaur, Churah valley and in and around the Manimahesh ranges that both challenge and satisfy man’s indomitable spirit for adventure.
  • 29. The Churdhar trek in Sirmaur; Hatu, Kuppar, Chanshal and the mystic land of Dodra Kwar in Shimla; Sangla valley, Nako, Kalpa in Kinnaur; Bashleo, Great Himalayan National Park, Solang – Rohtang Valley in Kullu; Barot, Lake Prashar, Karsog Valley in Mandi; Triund, Bara Bangal , Billing in Kangra; several routes in Lahaul and Spiti, are a bounty of trekking options that the land holds. Safety being a paramount concern when going out for a trekking holiday, there are specialized operators who conduct guided treks. Guides, equipment, porters, pack animals and maps are available with these operators as well as with government agencies. Old forest ‘dak bungalows’ in the deep woods on some trek routes are always a pleasant surprise discovery. There are rest houses belonging to State Electricity Board, Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department and other agencies on many routes that can be booked in advance for a planned trek. Most of these are marked out on trekking maps. Forest Rest Houses are booked by the area’s Divisional Forest

SKIING Skiing, the thrill of racing down a slope with icy winds rushing at you is an adventure sport which one will return to winter after winter, asking for more. Himachal is one of the few places in the country where this exciting sport is played. Himachal Tourism offers ski courses, instruction and has equipment on hire at Narkanda. In Manali, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports conducts professional and
  • 32. amateur skiing courses on the slopes of Solang Nala, Rohtang Pass and Hanuman Tibba. Several private operators also do conduct recreational skiing for tourists. Kufri, near Shimla, is one of the oldest places in India where skiing is done. Rushing down the Mahasu Peak slopes with ski’s in Kufri is a tourist’s delight. MOUNTAINEERING & ROCK CLIMBING Mountaineering is a daring adventure that needs rigorous training and discipline. Not just a test of your bodies endurance to extremely hostile environments, but being able to adapt to low oxygen altitudes, spending nights in tents under – 30 degree Celsius temperatures or more and surviving on rationed food supplies are all part of a training before one heads out to scale a high peak. Rock climbing is ascending a rock face by just using your hands and feet with a safety rope. It is a basic capability needed before attempting mountain climbing. It is also growing as a standalone adventure sport. Several peaks in the Pir Panjal range, Dhauladhar and Greater Himalaya ranges that lie across much of western and northern
  • 33. Himachal are over 6000 meters high. Many such peaks in Lahaul are unnamed and unscaled. Some of the highest peaks of Himachal are Reo Purgyil 6,816 m, Rangrik Rang 6,553 m, Shilla 6,132 m and Gya 6,794 meters. In the mountains around Rohtang Pass, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali (Kullu) conducts training camps as well as climbing excursions to Beas Kund, Patalsu Peak, Shitidhar Peak, Friendship Peak, Seven Sisters, Hanuman Tibba, and Deo Tibba. Training facilities, with basic, intermediate, advance mountaineering courses are conducted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali (Kullu). VEHICLE SAFARI For those who love land cruising, the wide road network of Himachal passes through some of the most exotic landscapes of the country. Exploring the countryside by Car and the more difficult trans-himalayan tracts in powerful 4×4 SUVs or in Group Motorbike safaris are a rage.
  • 34. Roads’ being the only reliable means for travel in the state, Himachal has invested much in connecting some of the remotest regions in the entire Himalayas. Driving past deep gorges like the Tranada Cliffs in Kinnaur or driving road to Pangi road has you admire the determination and endurance of the workers and engineers who cut past vertical rock formations to lay the road. For the adventure motorist, driving on some of the world’s highest roads, going over Rohtang (3980 m) or Kunzum Pass (4551 m) turns into a challenge. The drive from Chandigarh – Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza – Keylong to Leh or through the alternate route of Chandigarh – Mandi – Kullu – Manali – Keylong to Leh is a lifetime experience. When driving through high altitude zones of Spiti, Lahaul, Chamba or Kinnaur, the choice of vehicle, and the season chosen are of uttermost importance. Cars may not be able to handle the rougher tracks but in no way does this curtail the range of possible experiences. You can always hire SUVs that are powerful enough to negotiate all roads, be they are smooth or rough. Motorcycle drives through Himachal are becoming increasingly popular with domestic and international tourists making their way to Chamba over Sach Pass, into Lahaul over Rohtang Pass or to the cold desert of Spiti through Kinnaur. Those comfortable with riding two-wheelers have an edge in negotiating difficult terrain and narrow paths. Often, these are coupled with camping, trekking and a spot of dirt-riding. Himachal is also the venue for several short and lengthier rallies and motor-sport competitions, the most famous being the grueling ‘Raid de Himalaya’.
  • 35. CAMPING Camping is perhaps the best way to enjoy the wonders of nature and effortlessly partake of the warm hospitality of the inhabitants. Travellers can carry their own gear along or opt for any one of the several organized campsites pitched in various parts of the State. Other than the comfortable accommodation, facilities and services, most campsites offer catering, and a variety of activities such as hiking, fishing, nature tours and rafting. Himachal Pradesh Tourism and Private players in the industry have adventure camps set up in places like Sarchu in Lahaul, Dalhousie in Chamba, Barog and Chail in Solan, Sangla Valley and Kalpa in Kinnaur, Tabo in Spiti, Al Hilal (Taragarh) & Dharamshala in Kangra, Shoja and Kasol in Kullu valley and Mashobra, Baldian and Narkanda near Shimla.
  • 36. DAY HIKES Whether you’re camping by a lake, rented home in an apple orchard, staying in a hotel on the busy lanes of a Mall Road or living at a Home Stay accommodation at a remote hamlet, just about every destination in Himachal offers the possibility of day hikes, where you may leave in the morning and return by evening. These short walks may not require elaborate gear needed for longer treks, but certain basic things may be kept in mind—wear a comfortable pair of shoes and if you are taking one of the more rugged paths, then something with a good grip on the ankles is recommended. Carry water and a little snack, an umbrella or raincoat is recommended, especially during the monsoons. Also be prepared for little drop in temperature after sundown and wear or carry suitable clothes. Sunscreen lotion, dark glasses and headgear are optional. On the nature rambles do not leave the trail or spur, unless you are very sure of where you are going – distances and directions can be deceptive, it is suggested to take services of a guide. https://himachaltourism.gov.in
