The term “reactive” has lately become a buzzword, with a variety of definitions around the Web. When you hear reactive, what do you think of? Reactive Streams? The Reactive Manifesto? ReactJS? These terms may seem unrelated, but they share a common core concept. Reactive applications and reactive programming result in flexible, concise, performant code and are a superior alternative to the old standard thread-based imperative programming model. The reactive approach has gained popularity recently for one simple reason: we need alternative designs and architectures to meet today’s demands. However, it can be difficult to shift one’s mind to think in reactive terms due to how accustomed we’ve become to the imperative style. Stephen Pember explores the various definitions of reactive and reactive programming with the goal of providing techniques for building efficient, scalable applications. Steve dives into the key concepts of Reactive Streams and examines some sample implementations—including how ThirdChannel is currently using reactive libraries in production code. Steve looks at some of the open source options available in the JVM—including Reactor, RxJava, and Ratpack—giving attendees an idea of where to begin with the reactive ecosystem. This phenomenon, known as the "Innovator's Dilemma," eventually leads to many companies' downfall and is especially relevant in the fast-paced world of online services. In order to protect its leading position and grow its share of the highly competitive global digital streaming market, Netflix has to continuously increase the pace of innovation by constantly refining recommendation algorithms and adding new product features, while maintaining a high level of service uptime. The Netflix streaming platform consists of hundreds of microservices that are constantly evolving, and even the smallest production change may cause a cascading failure that can bring the entire service down. Comcast is one of the leading providers of communications, entertainment, and cable products and services. At the heart of it is Comcast RDK providing the backbone of telemetry to the industry. RDK (Reference Design Kit) is pre-bundled opensource firmware for a complete home platform covering video, broadband and IoT devices. RDK team at Comcast analyzes petabytes of data, collected every 15 minutes from 70 million devices (video and broadband and IoT devices) installed in customer homes. They run ETL and aggregation pipelines and publish analytical dashboards on a daily basis to reduce customer calls and firmware rollout. The analysis is also used to calculate WIFI happiness index which is a critical KPI for Comcast customer experience. In addition to this, RDK team also does release tracking by analyzing the RDK firmware quality. SQL Analytics allows customers to operate a lakehouse architecture that provides data warehousing performance at data lake economics for up to 4x better price/performance for SQL workloads than traditional cloud data warehouses. We present the results of the “Test and Learn” with SQL Analytics and the delta engine that we worked in partnership with the Databricks team. We present a quick demo introducing the SQL native interface, the challenges we faced with migration, The results of the execution and our journey of productionizing this at scale.

When we talk about prices, we often only talk about Lambda costs. But we rarey use only Lambda in our applications. Usually, we have other building blocks like API Gateway, data sources like SNS, SQS or Kinesis and Log service (Cloud Watch). Also, we store our data either in S3 or in serverless databases like DynamoDB or recently in Aurora Serverless. All these services have their own price models which we have to pay attention to. Moreover, we have to consider application data transfer costs. In this talk, we will draw the complete picture about the costs in the serverless applications, look at the Total Cost of Ownership and make some recommendations about when it’s worth using serverless and when the traditional approach (EC2)

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems.
