The digital marketing organization at VMware recently transformed the way it does business by migrating to a new tracking tool for all incoming requests. The team is responsible for all of VMWare.com, which is available in 13 languages, 40 countries, and produces over 20K unique pageviews in addition to other microsites. These sites support over 6 million unique monthly visitors worldwide, so it was no small task to make this change. The team chose JIRA Service Desk Cloud with Service Desk to fill the need. Digital Marketing supports the entire marketing organization of 600 people. By providing a simple self-serve submission method, automatic routing, and clear channels of communication the team was able to increase their capacity by 450% (from 100 to 900 monthly requests) and decrease their SLAs by 58% (shaving off 4 days). With over a dozen Serverless implementations on Azure Functions over the last couple years, I’ve learned some lessons the hard way. In this talk, I will be sharing a few of the most impactful hard-earned lessons and how I was able to overcome them. I’ll be touching on topics ranging from considerations using traditional relational databases, managing service and data connections to managing complexity and increasing observability. Spark has become central to our ability to process ever increasing amounts of data through our data factory. In late 2017 and throughout 2018, we have improved our ability to work with Spark by migrating all Spark jobs to Scala. Almost all organizations now have a need for datascience and as such the main challenge after determining the algorithm is to scale it up and make it operational. We at comcast use several tools and technologies such as Python, R, SaS, H2O and so on. In this talk we will show how many common use cases use the common algorithms like Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Decision Trees , Clustering, NLP etc. Spark has several Machine Learning algorithms built in and has excellent scalability. Hence we at comcast built a platform to provide DSaaS on top of Spark with REST API as a means of controlling and submitting jobs so as to abstract most users from the rigor of writing(repeating ) code instead focusing on the actual requirements. We will show how we solved some of the problems of establishing feature vectors, choosing algorithms and then deploying models into production. We will showcase our use of Scala, R and Python to implement models using language of choice yet deploying quickly into production on 500 node Spark clusters.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...

The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSage

NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?
