Police Brutality Of Police Officers
Recently police have come under fire for the deaths of many unarmed African American males. This
has broken the trust between civilians and police and torn our country apart. People are frustrated
about the killings of unarmed citizens and how it seems every officer can get away with killing an
unarmed suspect. Back in 1994 a law was passed that required the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) to record date on police involved shooting and deaths by police officers. Except where are the
numbers that would show there is an increase in unarmed African American deaths from police
officers? The 1994 law requires the FBI to keep record of police shootings across the United States.
However, the only police shooting records that could be found on the FBI website was "Justified
Homicide From on Duty Officers from 2008–2012". So the question becomes where is the data that
proves there is an increase in African American deaths by the hands of police officers. With the
recent outcry of "Police Brutality" you would think that the FBI would've released records or started
recording any and all police shootings. Experts say that we aren't experiencing an increase in police
shootings just an increase in media coverage of police shootings. According to a professor from
University from Albany who teaches sociology says his research has found that major news agencies
have elevated the coverage of police fatalities despite the decrease of police killings according to
statistics. Aaron

Police Officer As A Officer
Within all police departments in the United States there is police rank. Which is a ranking of officers
in command from either highest to lowest or lowest to highest. The ranking starts with the Chief of
Police than the Deputy Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Detective, and lastly your regular
officer. The Chief of Police is in charge of the department and everyone below him or her. The
person in command right above officers is usually a sergeant or lieutenant and this is the officers
direct boss rather than the chief of police. Having different ranking for officers is important because
those that are higher in command are the ones that are in charged and train the new officers when
they come into the police department. When training the new officers those higher in command, tell
them what is wrong and what is right and let them all how the police department works. So it only
seems right that when an officer takes part in police misconduct not only should that officer be held
responsible for the police misconduct, but his superiors as well. However, when police misconduct
takes place within law enforcement an officer in high command is rarely held accountable for the
wrongdoing that has taken place. Instead the blame is place on the law rank officer. Whoever is in
high command like the Chief of Police or Captain should be held responsible for what has taken
place within their police department. An officer that is high in command should as well be held
accountable is

In 2002 alone, large state and local law enforcement agencies, those with 100 or more officers,
received more than 26,000 citizen complaints about officers' use of force. Among those complaints
only eight percent had sufficient evidence of the allegation to justify disciplinary action against the
subject officer (U.S. Department of Justice). These incidents occur frequently but what truly
happens is never very clear. Witness reports don't hold up with evidence, the victim has their
recollection of what happened and the police officer has another. There is no concrete way to hold
police accountable for their actions unless there is hard evidence to prove them guilty. This allows
officers to use excessive force and not face any penalization from their department or in court. On
Saturday, August 9, 2014 an unarmed 18–year–old male, Michael Brown, was fatally shot by Darren
Wilson, a Ferguson police officer. There were a handful of witnesses but no concrete evidence on
what happened. The police officer, Darren Wilson, claims Brown pinned him in his vehicle and was
in fear for his life as they struggled over his gun. Wilson has told authorities that during the scuffle,
Brown reached for the gun. He goes on to say the gun went off twice in the car, one hitting Brown
while the other missed. Multiple forensics test show that Brown's blood was on the gun, on Officer
Wilson's uniform as well as the interior door panel which supports Officer Wilson's

The bill I will be introducing from the 84th session will be HB474. This is a bill that requires
officers to wear body cameras while preforming their job with the public (Reynolds). I will be
informing you on the positive and negative sides of the bill. I will give you my opinion on this bill
and why I chose it. I will also inform you on who introduced it and a partial background. Finally I
will inform you if the bill passed and became a law or not. In recent years, there has been a huge
movement with police brutality. There has also been a movement with Black Lives Matter. These
two groups almost always go together. The media has been a big factor in these movements.
Facebook and Twitter are key sites in showing how innocent minorities get into trouble just by the
way they look. Many followers of these movements believe that it is a type of cultural and racial
discrimination. "An oath to protect" is what they did. The life of a police officer is probably one of
the most dangerous jobs out there. These people are human, some have families of their own. It is
hard sometimes to see their side of the story. These people are not perfect, but personally they need
to be very close to it. Any time a police officer decides to "pull the trigger" they need to understand
the consequences that will come with it. The media will tend to eat it up. Make a story and get a
huge crowd in the public to hate every single police officer. It is hard to be a Black person in the

Police Officers And Their Image Of A Police Officer
Police officers were implemented into society to be protectors of the public and to serve the
community whenever they were in need of help or justice. They are here to enforce the "laws of the
land" and to keep society safe from any harm. The police are suppose to be our "unsung heroes."
With this knowledge, citizens should respect these individuals and trust the officers to implement
justice and protection. However, not all citizens respect the law enforcement or trust them. Many
would like to see police officers like this, but there are a lot that happens in society that make's one
rethink their image of a police officer. There are many people in the community that have negaitve
attitudes towards the police and see them as corrupt or brutal (Brown & Benedict, 2002, p. 551). The
individuals that are unfavorable towards the police are those from a low social statues, minorities
like blacks, from areas of high crime, single or divorced or widowed individuals, and especially
juveniles. Juveniles that have had high contact with officers, minorities, tolerance to illegal
behavior, and low socioeconomic group status believe that they are treated unfairly, targeted by the
police, and believe that they were wrongly accused (Janeksela, 1999, p. 314). Juvenile attitudes
toward the police is an important issue to examine because these children are the next generation
and outline the perception of authority to future generations and a negative attitude towards police
can lead the youth

Police Officer Requirements
Police officers have been in the news and spot light a lot lately for how they have had some sort of
misconduct on how they reacted in a certain situation. Which made me wonder if police officers go
through enough physical and educational training and if we need to raise the minimum
requirements? I think police officers go through a lot of educational training before they even get to
be on duty. Before even getting hired as a police officer you go through a lot of interviews that will
get you kicked out of the program if you answer wrong. Even though they would be more educated,
could handle situations better, and not be in the news so much for misconducted, police officers go
through enough training with their police academy we shouldn't change the requirements
The minimum education requirement to be a police officer is a high school diploma or a GED.

There would be a lot of police officers who would either be grandfathered into the new system if we
changed it or they would have to go back to school to get their degree. I think if we changed the
requirements to be a police officer it would turn away more people from the job and the job itself
isn't exactly a dream job in the first place. You don't get paid that well, and you are also in harms
way all the time. I am not sure why but there is a lot of hate for police officers so you have to walk
around knowing you are a target because you are in a police uniform. I had a conversation with Gus
Wessel NIC's school resource officer and he said his least favorite part about the job is "walking
around I try to be as safe as I can be but no matter how safe I am I can never be safe enough."
(Wessel) There is not exactly a lot of people running up saying that they want to be a police officer

Police Officer Training
In a 2016 Pew Research Center Survey of nearly 8,000 officers, 76% of the men and women polled
stated that they had been "More reluctant to use force when it is appropriate" (Morin, Parker, Stepler
& Mercer, 2017). This is a very serious issue in American society. Officers are not confident in their
ability to perform required duties. This is most likely due to the ongoing issues of training and
negative opinion towards them. This lack of confidence is leading to dangerous encounters between
officers and civilians. To remedy these issues, officers need to be better trained. Another possible
solution would be for more unbiased media that balances positive police stories with negative
stories. Only then can officers have the confidence and security ... Show more content on

In a National Interest article by J. Christian Adams, an unnamed officer was attacked by a citizen
after the officer refused to use force when the citizen acted aggressively (Adams, 2015, para. 4).
Adams states "The officer said he didn't defend himself because of fear of what the media and the
activists would do to him. 'A lot of officers are being too cautious because of what's going on in the
media,' the unnamed police officer told CNN. 'I hesitated because I didn't want to be in the media
like I am right now. It's hard times right now for us.'"(Adams, 2015, para. 4). This case was
especially alarming as the officer in question was beaten over the head with his firearm after he
refused to draw it. The unnamed officer had stopped a citizen, by the name of Jared Cunningham,
for driving erratically, but shortly after the stop Cunningham rushed the officer in an aggressive
manner. Instead of drawing his firearm to defend himself, the officer in question refused to act and
sustained severe injuries. This is perfect example of how the media can affect an officer's
judgement. Biased media can lead an officer to question their abilities and may stop them from
reacting appropriately. Incidentally, the inability to react in a professional manner will cause harm to
the officer and can endanger citizens. To fix this issue, media sources must develop a more unbiased
standing.

Police Officer Quotas
Sirens blazing as the man waits in the car with palpitating hands on the wheel as the authority in
blue with sunglasses walks closer and closer. Vehemently knocking on the window; the man comes
to see that a policeman accuses him of speeding. Getting a ticket for speeding happens to many
Americans every day, but one may not know that there exists a secret police system operating in the
background that demand these tickets, masked under mollified euphemisms to appear gentle.
Quotas, and the synonyms that follow it, determine a number of arrests and citations a police officer
needs to make. However, quotas impose necessities where it's not needed, causing police officers to
create false violations in order to meet their quantities by seeking ... Show more content on

In fact there is evidence of this happening, as a police officer in Michigan states "we are told to go
to specific intersections, in specific areas, to get our numbers up" (Wells). So what has been used to
increase productivity, has now become racial profiling. These intersections they talk about, are
neighborhoods with a majority of minorities. Police officers, with struggling number for quotas,
know that most of them won't have driver's license, that most won't try to go to court to debate the
legitimacy as they can't afford an attorney, so it becomes an easy way to rack up numbers. However,
this creates bigger problems, as most of them get the ticket and move on by, and most will get
caught again. Most of they can't pay for it so it will become a misdemeanor, thus creating high crime
areas. These quotas have enraged people, making police officers appear, racist, and greedy for
money, and will do it at the price of the people they were meant to protect. Thus, truly the only way
to bring back the trust of the people with the police department would be to strip away quotas and to
put more value on the work a police officer has done for their community. A method better than
quotas would be

Characteristics Of A Police Officer
Being employed as a police officer brings a consistent standard of morals and a high degree of
integrity within one self, whilst promoting these same characteristics of other police officers, the
New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF)and the general public. These traits are essential for a
police officer's ability to lead people, this is known as Ethical leadership. Burns (1978) highlights
that a leader's personality will provide the basis of leadership. Police Officers require an ethical
morale while exhibiting preferred behaviours whilst on or off duty. These are necessary to enforce
the organisations policy, State legislation and the officers own Oath of Office (Chandler, 2009). A
leader's behaviour is clear to all with deliberate decisions focusing on an ethical and law–abiding
tendency, and not one that can be mistaken for personal gain.
This essay will discuss a number of leadership traits and characteristics that I believe are important
in becoming a first line leader. I will discuss practical leadership strategies that may assist in a
probationary constable making the transition to being fully sworn officer working as senior with a
partner. I will also discuss my own leadership strengths and weakness including a self–assessment
and suggested development approaches for improvement.
For a probationary constable to become senior on the truck and effectively apply leadership to
another, they need to reflect on what type of leadership behaviours and characteristics they

The Death Of A Police Officer
On Aug. 9, 2014, two unarmed teenagers were walking the streets of Ferguson, a suburb of St.
Louis. The names of the two unarmed teenagers were Michael Brown and his friend Dorian
Johnson. All of sudden a police officer named Darren Wilson rushes towards them in his police car
and begins to tell them to get on the ground. The boys had committed no crime and were only one
mile from their destination, they were simply trying to get home and off the streets. Things escalated
and the officer pulled out his gun and told them that he would shoot them. As he was saying these
words the officer pulled the trigger and shot Michael Brown. Both of the boys started sprinting away
from Officer Wilson. The officer continued to pursue Michael Brown and then the unthinkable
happened. Dorian Johnson says in an interview, "He shot again, and once my friend felt that shot, he
turned around and he put his hands in the air and he started to get down, but the officer still
approached with his weapon drawn, and he fired several more shots". Michael Brown was shot
dead. The shooting immediately caused riots around the community of Ferguson for weeks. This
story is one of the many examples of what is called biased based policing. The officer chose to do
what he did because of his racial bias. Not all biased based policing is sparked by racial bias but it is
one of the bigger issues. The main issue is figuring out what needs to be fixed in order to refrain
from instances like the one in Ferguson.

Secondary Employment Police Officers
Secondary employment for police officers should work fine if done properly. Usually, some officers
tend to overextend themselves and the top staff members are a concern if officers are suffering from
fatigue, however, there are positive and negative things from secondary employment. However, a
career path in law enforcement is known to be financially lacking for some city government to
provide for their officers, and secondary employment may be used as a recruiting tool to gain new
officers. Normally, officers need a second job such as the typical citizens do, for expenses, reduce
debt, and simply make ends meet (Brunet, J., 2008). Also, the idea of having more law enforcement
officers throughout the community and shopping mall produces a positive effect, such as deterring
shoplifters. Nonetheless, having secondary employment funds coming in on the regular will
discourage police corruption for some. Police officers working off–duty jobs as security officers in
some schools has help ease parent's mind and placing their marked vehicles inconspicuous areas to
deter criminal activity around schools (Caine, R. D. Burlingame, M., & Arney, L., 1998). ... Show

Normally, the tax withholding is not removed, therefore problems with the IRS arises. Also, conflict

Police Brutality And Police Officers
The heated issue of police brutality and police officers violating civil rights has extensively covered
media headlines for several years. Hundreds of people are killed every year by police officers, and
many of these cases bring up issues of police brutality. More often than not, it is usually a white
police officer and an african american offender encounter that sparks media attention. The shooting
of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri is just one of these cases that has caused a major divide in
the United States. Michael Brown was fatally shot by Officer Wilson after an unfriendly encounter
in the streets. Those who believe that Officer Wilson made the right decision in shooting Michael
Brown, point to the fact that the grand jury chose not to indict him. Although Darren WIlson was not
charged after the shooting of unarmed Michael Brown, some people believe that his actions were
unlawful and he should have received some sort of punishment for his wrongdoing. Acknowledging
all of the facts of the investigation, Officer Wilson did not act properly in the circumstances of the
time. Many people believe that Officer Darren Wilson made the right decision when he fatally shot
Michael Brown because he feared for his life. In a report by Rachel Clark and Christopher Lett,
CNN reporters, they describe the incident that led to the shooting began when Wilson left the scene
of a sick call and encountered Michael Brown with his friend Dorian Johnson walking in the middle

The Effectiveness Of Police Officers
Ill natured reaction from the populace regarding the effectiveness of police officers has and will
continue to be an issue in our society. The constant change in public opinion, morals, finances,
socially acceptable behaviors, and cultural diversity limits the potential for implementation of a
concrete model of law enforcement policy and procedure. In order to maintain the proper balance
between law enforcement operations and the changing social dynamic it is imperative to measure
the needs of the populace in relation to the change. A proper model would include procedural

Additionally by providing student opinion in the data the potential to produce a sustainable model
increases based on the progressive perspective offered. Prophesying that the community will place

social issues are the center of cynicism aimed at law enforcement officers and their respective
departmental policies and procedures. Introduction Various aspects of society are impacted when
strain is present between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve; a breakdown in
system policy and procedure propels officers to the forefront of negative opinion relative to
community relations. It becomes apparent that social discord is unbounded when the justice system
fails to recognize discrepancies in the operations at a variety of levels. In order to obtain a solid
platform for reconnecting this community and the officers serving within, it is imperative that
respondent information is used to benefit both community needs and public safety respectively. In
order to facilitate the necessary changes a survey would be provided to the members of the
community and the officers within the jurisdiction. The random selection of survey recipients would

The Police Officer Bill Of Rights
Abstract
It is crucial that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are
conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the officer and its employers.
This paper discusses the Police Officer Bill of Rights created by a subcommittee created by the
Legislative Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the
importance of it being implemented and standardized across the United States.
The Amendments found in the United States Constitution contain several provisions to protect
citizens from various infringements from the government. These provisions have greatly influenced
what law enforcement is today. Due to the power of a law enforcement official, the public expects
officers to be held to a higher ethical standard. Part of that expectation entails that officers will
follow in the law and lead by example. Unfortunately, no one is perfect and departments will always
have those law enforcement officers who stray from what is right and act questionably on and off
duty. To ensure that officers are being held accountable for their actions, departments will employ
their own Internal Investigation division to help identify, discipline, and/or remove employees found
guilty of misconduct. Therefore, it is important that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that
internal investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the

Police Officers And The Police Force
"You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you." Most of us
know exactly who says this and what it means. The only problem is that this quote is the extent of
our knowledge as an outsider to the Greensboro Police force. I was able to get an inside look at what
really happens in a day in the life of an everyday police officer. I spent two days at the department

However despite this there are many more problems that police officers have to deal with like
disrespect from the public. I asked the officers what one word is that really stands out to them as
blatant disrespect, 90 percent of them told me that word was pig. A "pig" is a slang term which is
used to disrespect a police officer. Most officers say they will just ignore this but according to state
law "it is illegal to make or use any utterance, gesture, display or abusive language that is intended
to and likely to provoke violent retaliation." About 5 of the 20 officers I interviewed told me they
have arrested people for repeatedly calling them a pig. Not only is this a normal reply, but most
people, including me, do not know that officers can do this.
While I was riding around in the patrol car with Officer Hank I saw firsthand that many people do
not respect police officers. One person who he pulled over cursed, yelled, and all together
disrespected Officer Hank due to their taillight being out after already being warned. Officer Hank
told me he was not going to give them a citation before they disrespected him. I also found that
when officers where cameras people are less likely to be disrespectful to them. My dad always
wears a camera when he is patrolling and besides people pulling the "race card" disrespect is
something he rarely has to deal with. Another key factor is the gender of the officer in

for a follow–on career in law enforcement once their career in the military is complete. There are
many benefits and rewards to being in the military as a military police officer.
The Military Police Corps is one of the youngest branches of the United States Army. It was formed
on September 26th, 1941. Soldiers have been performing these duties since the Revolutionary War.

Police Enforcement And Police Officers
It is widely known that police officers are given a substantial amount of latitude concerning
vehicular searches while on patrol. Many officers make it a habit to ask citizens they pull over if it 's
okay to search their cars, while others will only ask if they have reason to believe that a suspect is
hiding something. Either way, what should you do if the police search your car without your
permission, and without first obtaining a search warrant? Most people know that police officers need
one of three things to search your car: permission, probable cause or a warrant. Unfortunately, an
officer will obtain one of those three things if he is determined to execute a search, even if there is a
possibility that it will later be thrown out in court. If permission is denied and they don 't have
sufficient evidence for a warrant, just about anything can be used for probable cause. For example,
let 's say that you 're pulled over for speeding, and when the police officer takes your license and
registration, he notices that your eyes are red. This is a common side effect of marijuana use (and
about a thousand other things), but he might decide that he wants to search your car, so he asks
permission. If you don 't give it, but there is a large jacket tossed over the passenger seat of the car,
he can use that jacket and your red eyes to generate probable cause. After all, you might be
concealing an ounce of marijuana underneath the jacket, and he would have to search your car if he

Police Officers And The Police Vehicles
" To protect and to serve" that is the saying that police officers use, and it is on the police vehicles.

For instance, my cousin joined the sheriff's department after his service in the army. He has told me
his experiences when he joined the sheriff's department; he loves the law enforcement because he
was able to help around the community and not just with criminal matters. But then, when he told
me how sad it is when they get accused because they are on the front line and he said " they get
hated on because of a lot of injustices that happened decades ago." He also says that there are still
good police officers out there and not abusing the badge, but some people don't see it because
they're to focus on the issues that makes them fear the badge.
No doubt, due to the issues back then caused us to call them "racist" and threatening them because
of the issues we were dealing with the past. By doing all those things, it makes some of them scared
from all the threatening and calling them names because they're putting their life at risk. For
instance, if a police officer shot a Mexican person, everyone is going to get crazy because he or she

Police Officer : Mental Fortitude And Resilience Of Police...
An police officer have many duties to do.They have to responded 911 calls, investigate breaks in
,making arrest, direct traffic, and give first aid to victims in need. Most of the time, they are
generally the first to respond to any emergency. Also, they are commissioned to keep citizens safe
24 hours a day and seven days a week. They not only have to protect the citizens, but they also have
to protect themselves because being a police officer is very risky. Also officers incur a higher rate of
illnesses and injury than the national average for others jobs. "Police work brings with it inherent
danger and stress, so mental fortitude and resilience is important" (John, Ciaran 1).
Officers need to follow every law and shouldn't show any favor or ill will based on
race, sexuality, gender, religion,or age. Officers have more power, privileges, than the average
citizens, even though they still have to treat them with respect. Also officers should be prepared to
work on a flexible schedule because policemen are needed around the clock,so all the time. Officers

Police Officers And The Police Officer
The colors red, white, and blue in America represents freedom. When a police officer approaches a
civilian in today's times, those colors mean the absolute worst. With recent police mischief including
shootings, red, white, and blue could mean absolute panic. Americans today feel as if there is a war
with police officers. The most common question civilians have, why are innocent people being
killed by police officers? The civic responsibility of a police officer is to serve and protect citizens
while upholding the law. With many recent incidents, civilians no longer feel safe around
authorities. A new policy proposed to congress by Barack Obama is for police officers to wear body
worn cameras, or BWC's. "... nine in ten Americans support the use of cameras on cops" (Boone).
Therefore, police officers should be required to wear body worn cameras in order to have better
security, behavior, and evidence for crime scenes.
First off, wearing body worn cameras will provide better security to both police officers and
civilians. In an experiment composed by the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology
(IoC), in which police officers in Rialto, California wore cameras as a part of their uniform for one
year., results gathered from the experiment proved to be beneficial. According to the experiment, "...
use–of–force by officers wearing cameras fell by 59% and reports against officers dropped by
87%..." (Lewsey). This proves that BWC's have a positive effect on police

Dangers Of Being A Police Officer
When one is thinking about a career in law enforcement there is a lot to consider. The job can be
stressful and come with a lot of dangerous situation. Being a police officer can be a very rewarding
job and can make you have a sense of purpose. Police officers can be put into dangerous situation
very quickly, so they have to be able to think quickly on their feet. One may become a police officer
for the sense of reward, but it comes with a lot of stress and dangers.
Policeman can have a stressful job and sometimes it gets in the way of their lives away from work.
According to Patrolman Michael Anderson (2017), he loves his job. One of the many things that he

Without incorporating some type of stress reliever the job may become overwhelming and can lead
to serious health problems. The majority of police officers are men and a small percentage are
women. This field is mostly dominated by men and has been for many years. According to
University of San Diego (2017), talks about how women can have a positive effect in this field.
When dealing with sex assaults the female victim may not want to talk to a male this is where the
female police officer may have a positive impact. Many women who are looking may face a
problem with equality when trying to find a job. Most law enforcement departments are looking for
physically fit and upper body strength and sometimes there is a stereotypes of women being weak;
however, that is not always the case. Studies have found that women can make a positive impact on
the community. In the beginning of the semester we were required to take a career test, my results
were that I tested high in public safety. I think this is true, it goes along with the career that I plan on
going into. Taking this test just made me realize that it is the right career for me.
In conclusion, becoming a police officer is a big decision and is a lot to consider. The job can be
dangerous and come with a lot of stress; however it can be very rewarding. When first becoming a
police officer it may be difficult to adjust to work and home life, but it can be managed.

Homosexual Police Officers
Abstract
Media coverage surrounding alternative sexualities has also expanded in recent years and, in the
wake of gay liberation and the emergence of lesbian and gay studies, an ever increasing flow of
academic documentation pertaining to sexual orientation has flourished. We now know more about
homosexual lives in general and about the experiences of particular groups such as those in prison
those who offer sex in exchange for money and those who lived during particular historical periods.
However, with the knowledge and awareness about what it means to be gay or lesbian has increased
considerably, there remains an ignorance on a number of homosexual issues. Explanations of why
sexual orientations differ are still inadequate, and in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Support Organizations
The presence of women and gay men on the police force challenges the traditional heterosexually
masculine definition of the occupation. Recognizing the need for gay and lesbian police officers and
other criminal justice professionals to have an arena to discuss needs and concerns in an atmosphere
free of job–related reprisals, the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) was established in 1981.
GOAL continues to provide a safe environment for people who have been, and continue to be,
victims of harassment and discrimination in the workplace, while at the same time attempting to
change homophobic attitudes in the workplace and in the community at large (Dahir, 1999). Other
organizations such as Law Enforcement Gays and Lesbians (LEGAL) also offer support for gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender workers in the criminal justice system. According to Dahir (1999),
The Gay Police Association (GPA) was formed in 1990 by a handful of officers in the Metropolitan
Police. Since then it has grown into a formally recognized and respected staff association with
members in all 52 UK police forces. The GPA is the only national organization that specifically
represents the needs and interests of gay police staff in the United Kingdom (para.1). Membership is
open to all Gay, Lesbian, Bi–sexual, Transgender and Transsexual Police Officers and Police Staff.

The Media Of Police Officers
For many of us our portrayal of police officers has been shaped by media. The media creates shows
such as Rookie Blue which shows police officers and their day to day lives. These shows are heavily
fantasied. Media portrays the life of an officer as dangerous and fast. Most of the public views an
officers job as chasing the bad guy and solving crimes, but in reality it is far more than that. These
mythical portrayals of officers create false images of police officers. Majority of police officers do
not spend their days chasing the bad guys, it is much more than that. The text notes that medias ideal
cop spends more time fighting crime than an actual officer in their whole career (Kappeler & Potter,
2005, p.237). If media had a true image ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The commonality amongst officers makes it easier for officers to relate to one another, in turn a
police sub–culture is created. John Cochran and Max Bromley (2003) explain that the police sub–
culture is made up of negative attitudes to restrictions placed on the police. This can be things such
as gun restriction and how officers need to use Tasers before they fire at someone they perceive to
be a threat. The job of an officer can effect their behaviors for the reason that the job requires full
attention. I found it surprising that it is perceived that a domestic violence call is the most dangerous
call an officer can receive. Police officers respond to a variety of calls that can be categorized as
dangerous, but to say the most dangerous are domestic calls is misleading. Police are not often killed
responding to domestic disturbances (Mona Margarita, 1980). The text notes that police are more
likely to be killed responding to different calls. Police officers are more likely to be killed
responding to robbers trying to run away from a crime scene (Margarita, 1980). It is a myth to
believe that domestic calls are the most fatal. Officers are more likely to be killed by a robber
because they view the officer as imminent danger (Margarita, 1980). It is worth noting that the
public perceives an officers job as always fighting crime. Megan O'Neill (2011) explains that police

Description Of A Police Officer
Introduction I always knew that I wanted to become a police officer, so I decided to interview a
Police Captain. I interviewed Police Captain John Carpenter of Riverside Police Department. I
found him through Riverside Police Department after looking around at the organizational chart I
found online and looking at the titles that were on the chart. The Police Captain is one rank above a
Lieutenant, but one below a Deputy Chief. A Police Captain is in charge of a certain precinct, and
normally has his/her own division. Captain Carpenter is currently in charge of investigations, such
as gangs, narcotics, vice, and intelligence units. The first portion of the paper will discuss qualities
and requirements for the position, while the second portion of the paper will go more in depth into
the occupation, such as the training required, how candidates are chosen, and salary.

Stop The Downfall Of Our Heros
Imagine a child that worries every day about the fact that he may never see his mom or dad again
because they are out there risking their lives for their community. With constant attacks on police
happening, thousands of children all around the country are constantly worrying about their mother
or father returning from work. One might argue that an officer's job is dangerous enough as it is and
that is completely understandable. But what is not acceptable is that danger increasing due to
planned attacks from protestors. Due to recent events, many protesters have emerged against police,
some peaceful, and some murderous. Many people are also starting to look at police officers in a bad
way due to how the media has blown up a couple situations. Police are constantly being judged as
racist killers, and the many stereotypes going around are not deserved.
As Americans, we simply do not understand that there actually is good police officers out there.

The opinions of the public are of importance to the police, as they are less likely to contact officers
or ask for help if they doubt the integrity of the police force (Powell et al, 2008).
The introduction of the separate, specialist units is what has helped keep the peace of society that is
needed in order to create a sense of safety. Instances of the separate units involved in policing,
include and evolve around the mounted police, the canine section of the police force, detectives,
major crimes, tactical operations, hostage response, public order and finally highway patrol and
traffic policing. Although some units were developed at a later date compared to others – for
example the canine section, which was formed in 1993 with the initial intake of two German
shepherd dogs, it has steadily grown (About WA Police, 2015), in order to help with apprehending
violent offenders, and detecting explosive devices and narcotics (About WA Police, 2015).
As seen from the example above, it is easy to note that although each unit is under different names
and investigative tactics, they all coincide with the general policing operations, as they are
collectively on the same mission as one another – which is to enhance the quality of life and well–
being of those in the community, along also with trying to keep the State a safe and secure place to

The Job Of A Police Officer
Most people can easily speculate as to which career is the most dangerous one in America.
Hollywood has dramatized this career so much through their television shows, that people do not
realize that this is no joke. This career is the most dangerous because it has the highest death rates of
any career. The reason why the death rates are so astonishingly high is because the people who work
in this career put their lives on the line to save others in need, and because they work in dire
situations. This job is the one of a police officer. Though it may be the most dangerous career in

Later on, Colonial America enforced this form of work. Ferguson states that "A sheriff, appointed by
the governor of a colony, enforced laws, collected taxes, and maintained public property throughout
a colony" (Ferguson 143). From there on, the work of police officer became more specialized, and
was divided into departments. New advancements also affected their work. New technology,
firearms, restraints, and other new items to use defensively were created.
The next subject to touch upon, is the job description of a police officer. The duties of an officer can
vary greatly. In a smaller department, an officer may have to direct traffic, patrol, break up riots,
escort a funeral procession, or issue a ticket for a violation of a law (Ferguson 144). In larger city
departments, the work is more specialized. These departments are comprised of special work
divisions. These divisions may include communications, firearms identification, criminal
investigation, forensic science, accident prevention, fingerprint identification analysis, and
administrative services (Ferguson 144). Also, in larger cities, a department will contain special units
of work. These units include harbor patrol, the canine unit, vice, traffic and records control, and the
rescue unit (Ferguson 144). In every department, there are specific positions to be filled. These
positions include: chiefs, sergeants, captains, desk or booking officers, and many other positions.

Police Officer Selection
To be selected for a police officer position, and applicant will have to overcome many obstacles
(Doerner, 2012). A sworn police officer position can be very competitive with many agencies
attracting 50–60 applicants for each available job (Doerner, 2012). Knowing this, I believe makes an
argument against the critics that argue a rigorous selection process needlessly produces a smaller
eligibility pool. The rigorous selection process has stood the test of time with the Denver Police
Department's hiring guidelines used almost 70 years ago is very much the same for many agencies
today (Doerner, 2012).
I am a supporter of maintaining the rigorous selection process and argue that its merits outweigh any
possible flaws. I believe the selection

Hiring Police Officers
Hiring police officers to perform private security work has positive aspects and potential pitfalls.
Business owners vary in their opinion on hiring police officers. Liability and cost are reasons some
prefer to hire private security guards or take other security measures. Other business owners prefer
the training, professionalism, deterrence, and authority that come with hiring a police officer. Due to
lawsuits involving off–duty police officers, the Courts have had to develop tests to determine when
a moonlighting police officer is working under the authority of the private company or in the role of
a peace officer. Issues have arisen about the difference in police mentality and retail service. Some

Nearly all Hispanics at the store I worked off–duty at paid for purchases in cash. Before the owner
hired police officers, a gang of armed men robbed his store and several other Hispanic stores with in
a months time. They made off with an average about $20,000 from each robbery. The night of the
robbery, during the course of the initial investigation, the owner inquired about hiring a police

Police Officers And Officers Police And Corrections Officers
If My Mind Could Forget the Things My Eyes Have Seen Abuse by police officers and officers in
penal institutions is a big subject in the media now. Turn to a news station and the chances of seeing
at least on case are pretty high. The most unreported incidents, however, is actually assault on police
officers and corrections officers. The media does not report these issues nearly as much as it tries to
portray officer assault on criminals. Why is it that the media covers up the big issue of officer
assault and reports the "innocent" criminals being assaulted? When the media is trying to scare
someone they don't say criminals are bad, instead, make it seem like the selfless officers risking
their lives are the bad guys and use it as a scare tactic to create distrust and panic in the public.
Abuse falls under six definitions when applied to law enforcement. Physical abuse: The blatant
beating, striking, or physical mistreatment of an inmate. This is a very vague area because any
physical contact with an inmate can be reported as abuse. Psychological abuse: The mental
degradation of an inmate through embarrassment, unnecessary command or criticism. Unlawful
interrogation, which is literally unheard of anymore, means the use of starvation, sleep deprivation,
dehydration, etc. Excessive force: When compliance must be obtained physically and the amount of
force used far exceeds the need. Torture: the use of stress positions water boarding and hot boxing,

Police Officers And Police Officer
There is enough evidence to show that police officers are using an excess of force, and in some
occasions, lethal force in their daily routine. It is now normal for people to get scared when they are
in the presence of a police officer. It is not a coincidence because these police officer have created
their own reputation. Recent incidents involving police officers shooting innocent people are raising
doubts about how police officers are trained, and the credibility in the Unites States Justice System.
Ginger Otis in Police Still 'Have a License To Kill', a Year After Eric Garner Was Choked to Death,
Says His Mother, shows many controversial cases such as Eric Garner's case where he was choked
to death by a police officer in New York city. Also, Michael Brown an unarmed black teen that was
shot to death in Ferguson, MO, or Tamir Rice a 12 year old boy that was playing with a toy gun in
Cleveland, and several others. Also, it includes the decisions of the Grand jury on some of the cases
where only two officers were charged. The discomfort of the community became present and they
started movements like "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" in the Brown's case and "I Can't Breath" in the
Garner's case. Unfortunately, this issue has not stopped, and people still get hurt by police officers.
Decisions of the Grand jury are putting in danger the credibility of the United States System Justice.

Police Officer Analysis
These two aforementioned events compels me, as a concerned citizen and veteran, to reassess the
standards and the roles of our contemporary policing agencies as well as individual law enforcement
officers. I believe that by changing the people who are police as well as increasing diversity and
officer education would be an effective strategy when dealing with social issues and law
enforcement. For instance, when it comes to excessive use of force, discrimination and the like. In
regards to the two incidents that involved excessive use of police force, responses to the assault on
both King and Garner have varied among the police, the public, and academic circles. Since law
enforcement officers are human it is quite possible that individual officers within a department are
merely microcosms of society. In other words, this sub–culture within the policing culture,
abbreviates in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger (i.e.
society, clubs, and groups,). Moreover, if a police recruit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer,
and corrections officer in the performance of their duties? There are vast and simiular reasons that
all of these officers have to conduct legal searches.
For police officers as we learned in several chapters, there are issues that come with their abilities to
conduct legal searches, for example a police officer cannot just approach someone on their front
porch and demand to enter their home to search for illegal substances or arms etc. However, if one
was driving by your home and seen you in your garage with what appeared to be a meth lab or
marijuana grow operation then they can stop to search as it would be a duty of theirs to protect the
community. A search where one person would feel that they have a reasonable expectation of

Police Brutality Of Police Officers

  • 1. Police Brutality Of Police Officers Recently police have come under fire for the deaths of many unarmed African American males. This has broken the trust between civilians and police and torn our country apart. People are frustrated about the killings of unarmed citizens and how it seems every officer can get away with killing an unarmed suspect. Back in 1994 a law was passed that required the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to record date on police involved shooting and deaths by police officers. Except where are the numbers that would show there is an increase in unarmed African American deaths from police officers? The 1994 law requires the FBI to keep record of police shootings across the United States. However, the only police shooting records that could be found on the FBI website was "Justified Homicide From on Duty Officers from 2008–2012". So the question becomes where is the data that proves there is an increase in African American deaths by the hands of police officers. With the recent outcry of "Police Brutality" you would think that the FBI would've released records or started recording any and all police shootings. Experts say that we aren't experiencing an increase in police shootings just an increase in media coverage of police shootings. According to a professor from University from Albany who teaches sociology says his research has found that major news agencies have elevated the coverage of police fatalities despite the decrease of police killings according to statistics. • 3. Police Officer As A Officer Within all police departments in the United States there is police rank. Which is a ranking of officers in command from either highest to lowest or lowest to highest. The ranking starts with the Chief of Police than the Deputy Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Detective, and lastly your regular officer. The Chief of Police is in charge of the department and everyone below him or her. The person in command right above officers is usually a sergeant or lieutenant and this is the officers direct boss rather than the chief of police. Having different ranking for officers is important because those that are higher in command are the ones that are in charged and train the new officers when they come into the police department. When training the new officers those higher in command, tell them what is wrong and what is right and let them all how the police department works. So it only seems right that when an officer takes part in police misconduct not only should that officer be held responsible for the police misconduct, but his superiors as well. However, when police misconduct takes place within law enforcement an officer in high command is rarely held accountable for the wrongdoing that has taken place. Instead the blame is place on the law rank officer. Whoever is in high command like the Chief of Police or Captain should be held responsible for what has taken place within their police department. An officer that is high in command should as well be held accountable is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Police Officers And The Police Officer Blake Burton Comp II 11/16/2014 In 2002 alone, large state and local law enforcement agencies, those with 100 or more officers, received more than 26,000 citizen complaints about officers' use of force. Among those complaints only eight percent had sufficient evidence of the allegation to justify disciplinary action against the subject officer (U.S. Department of Justice). These incidents occur frequently but what truly happens is never very clear. Witness reports don't hold up with evidence, the victim has their recollection of what happened and the police officer has another. There is no concrete way to hold police accountable for their actions unless there is hard evidence to prove them guilty. This allows officers to use excessive force and not face any penalization from their department or in court. On Saturday, August 9, 2014 an unarmed 18–year–old male, Michael Brown, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a Ferguson police officer. There were a handful of witnesses but no concrete evidence on what happened. The police officer, Darren Wilson, claims Brown pinned him in his vehicle and was in fear for his life as they struggled over his gun. Wilson has told authorities that during the scuffle, Brown reached for the gun. He goes on to say the gun went off twice in the car, one hitting Brown while the other missed. Multiple forensics test show that Brown's blood was on the gun, on Officer Wilson's uniform as well as the interior door panel which supports Officer Wilson's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Police Officer The bill I will be introducing from the 84th session will be HB474. This is a bill that requires officers to wear body cameras while preforming their job with the public (Reynolds). I will be informing you on the positive and negative sides of the bill. I will give you my opinion on this bill and why I chose it. I will also inform you on who introduced it and a partial background. Finally I will inform you if the bill passed and became a law or not. In recent years, there has been a huge movement with police brutality. There has also been a movement with Black Lives Matter. These two groups almost always go together. The media has been a big factor in these movements. Facebook and Twitter are key sites in showing how innocent minorities get into trouble just by the way they look. Many followers of these movements believe that it is a type of cultural and racial discrimination. "An oath to protect" is what they did. The life of a police officer is probably one of the most dangerous jobs out there. These people are human, some have families of their own. It is hard sometimes to see their side of the story. These people are not perfect, but personally they need to be very close to it. Any time a police officer decides to "pull the trigger" they need to understand the consequences that will come with it. The media will tend to eat it up. Make a story and get a huge crowd in the public to hate every single police officer. It is hard to be a Black person in the United States of ... • 9. Police Officers And Their Image Of A Police Officer Police officers were implemented into society to be protectors of the public and to serve the community whenever they were in need of help or justice. They are here to enforce the "laws of the land" and to keep society safe from any harm. The police are suppose to be our "unsung heroes." With this knowledge, citizens should respect these individuals and trust the officers to implement justice and protection. However, not all citizens respect the law enforcement or trust them. Many would like to see police officers like this, but there are a lot that happens in society that make's one rethink their image of a police officer. There are many people in the community that have negaitve attitudes towards the police and see them as corrupt or brutal (Brown & Benedict, 2002, p. 551). The individuals that are unfavorable towards the police are those from a low social statues, minorities like blacks, from areas of high crime, single or divorced or widowed individuals, and especially juveniles. Juveniles that have had high contact with officers, minorities, tolerance to illegal behavior, and low socioeconomic group status believe that they are treated unfairly, targeted by the police, and believe that they were wrongly accused (Janeksela, 1999, p. 314). Juvenile attitudes toward the police is an important issue to examine because these children are the next generation and outline the perception of authority to future generations and a negative attitude towards police can lead the youth ... • 11. Police Officer Requirements Police officers have been in the news and spot light a lot lately for how they have had some sort of misconduct on how they reacted in a certain situation. Which made me wonder if police officers go through enough physical and educational training and if we need to raise the minimum requirements? I think police officers go through a lot of educational training before they even get to be on duty. Before even getting hired as a police officer you go through a lot of interviews that will get you kicked out of the program if you answer wrong. Even though they would be more educated, could handle situations better, and not be in the news so much for misconducted, police officers go through enough training with their police academy we shouldn't change the requirements The minimum education requirement to be a police officer is a high school diploma or a GED. Which I think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There would be a lot of police officers who would either be grandfathered into the new system if we changed it or they would have to go back to school to get their degree. I think if we changed the requirements to be a police officer it would turn away more people from the job and the job itself isn't exactly a dream job in the first place. You don't get paid that well, and you are also in harms way all the time. I am not sure why but there is a lot of hate for police officers so you have to walk around knowing you are a target because you are in a police uniform. I had a conversation with Gus Wessel NIC's school resource officer and he said his least favorite part about the job is "walking around I try to be as safe as I can be but no matter how safe I am I can never be safe enough." (Wessel) There is not exactly a lot of people running up saying that they want to be a police officer so I think if the job requirements changed there would be even less people that would want to be a ... • 13. Police Officer Training In a 2016 Pew Research Center Survey of nearly 8,000 officers, 76% of the men and women polled stated that they had been "More reluctant to use force when it is appropriate" (Morin, Parker, Stepler & Mercer, 2017). This is a very serious issue in American society. Officers are not confident in their ability to perform required duties. This is most likely due to the ongoing issues of training and negative opinion towards them. This lack of confidence is leading to dangerous encounters between officers and civilians. To remedy these issues, officers need to be better trained. Another possible solution would be for more unbiased media that balances positive police stories with negative stories. Only then can officers have the confidence and security ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a National Interest article by J. Christian Adams, an unnamed officer was attacked by a citizen after the officer refused to use force when the citizen acted aggressively (Adams, 2015, para. 4). Adams states "The officer said he didn't defend himself because of fear of what the media and the activists would do to him. 'A lot of officers are being too cautious because of what's going on in the media,' the unnamed police officer told CNN. 'I hesitated because I didn't want to be in the media like I am right now. It's hard times right now for us.'"(Adams, 2015, para. 4). This case was especially alarming as the officer in question was beaten over the head with his firearm after he refused to draw it. The unnamed officer had stopped a citizen, by the name of Jared Cunningham, for driving erratically, but shortly after the stop Cunningham rushed the officer in an aggressive manner. Instead of drawing his firearm to defend himself, the officer in question refused to act and sustained severe injuries. This is perfect example of how the media can affect an officer's judgement. Biased media can lead an officer to question their abilities and may stop them from reacting appropriately. Incidentally, the inability to react in a professional manner will cause harm to the officer and can endanger citizens. To fix this issue, media sources must develop a more unbiased standing. ... • 15. Police Officer Quotas Sirens blazing as the man waits in the car with palpitating hands on the wheel as the authority in blue with sunglasses walks closer and closer. Vehemently knocking on the window; the man comes to see that a policeman accuses him of speeding. Getting a ticket for speeding happens to many Americans every day, but one may not know that there exists a secret police system operating in the background that demand these tickets, masked under mollified euphemisms to appear gentle. Quotas, and the synonyms that follow it, determine a number of arrests and citations a police officer needs to make. However, quotas impose necessities where it's not needed, causing police officers to create false violations in order to meet their quantities by seeking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact there is evidence of this happening, as a police officer in Michigan states "we are told to go to specific intersections, in specific areas, to get our numbers up" (Wells). So what has been used to increase productivity, has now become racial profiling. These intersections they talk about, are neighborhoods with a majority of minorities. Police officers, with struggling number for quotas, know that most of them won't have driver's license, that most won't try to go to court to debate the legitimacy as they can't afford an attorney, so it becomes an easy way to rack up numbers. However, this creates bigger problems, as most of them get the ticket and move on by, and most will get caught again. Most of they can't pay for it so it will become a misdemeanor, thus creating high crime areas. These quotas have enraged people, making police officers appear, racist, and greedy for money, and will do it at the price of the people they were meant to protect. Thus, truly the only way to bring back the trust of the people with the police department would be to strip away quotas and to put more value on the work a police officer has done for their community. A method better than quotas would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Characteristics Of A Police Officer Being employed as a police officer brings a consistent standard of morals and a high degree of integrity within one self, whilst promoting these same characteristics of other police officers, the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF)and the general public. These traits are essential for a police officer's ability to lead people, this is known as Ethical leadership. Burns (1978) highlights that a leader's personality will provide the basis of leadership. Police Officers require an ethical morale while exhibiting preferred behaviours whilst on or off duty. These are necessary to enforce the organisations policy, State legislation and the officers own Oath of Office (Chandler, 2009). A leader's behaviour is clear to all with deliberate decisions focusing on an ethical and law–abiding tendency, and not one that can be mistaken for personal gain. This essay will discuss a number of leadership traits and characteristics that I believe are important in becoming a first line leader. I will discuss practical leadership strategies that may assist in a probationary constable making the transition to being fully sworn officer working as senior with a partner. I will also discuss my own leadership strengths and weakness including a self–assessment and suggested development approaches for improvement. For a probationary constable to become senior on the truck and effectively apply leadership to another, they need to reflect on what type of leadership behaviours and characteristics they ... • 19. The Death Of A Police Officer On Aug. 9, 2014, two unarmed teenagers were walking the streets of Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis. The names of the two unarmed teenagers were Michael Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson. All of sudden a police officer named Darren Wilson rushes towards them in his police car and begins to tell them to get on the ground. The boys had committed no crime and were only one mile from their destination, they were simply trying to get home and off the streets. Things escalated and the officer pulled out his gun and told them that he would shoot them. As he was saying these words the officer pulled the trigger and shot Michael Brown. Both of the boys started sprinting away from Officer Wilson. The officer continued to pursue Michael Brown and then the unthinkable happened. Dorian Johnson says in an interview, "He shot again, and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and he put his hands in the air and he started to get down, but the officer still approached with his weapon drawn, and he fired several more shots". Michael Brown was shot dead. The shooting immediately caused riots around the community of Ferguson for weeks. This story is one of the many examples of what is called biased based policing. The officer chose to do what he did because of his racial bias. Not all biased based policing is sparked by racial bias but it is one of the bigger issues. The main issue is figuring out what needs to be fixed in order to refrain from instances like the one in Ferguson. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Secondary Employment Police Officers Secondary employment for police officers should work fine if done properly. Usually, some officers tend to overextend themselves and the top staff members are a concern if officers are suffering from fatigue, however, there are positive and negative things from secondary employment. However, a career path in law enforcement is known to be financially lacking for some city government to provide for their officers, and secondary employment may be used as a recruiting tool to gain new officers. Normally, officers need a second job such as the typical citizens do, for expenses, reduce debt, and simply make ends meet (Brunet, J., 2008). Also, the idea of having more law enforcement officers throughout the community and shopping mall produces a positive effect, such as deterring shoplifters. Nonetheless, having secondary employment funds coming in on the regular will discourage police corruption for some. Police officers working off–duty jobs as security officers in some schools has help ease parent's mind and placing their marked vehicles inconspicuous areas to deter criminal activity around schools (Caine, R. • 23. Police Brutality And Police Officers The heated issue of police brutality and police officers violating civil rights has extensively covered media headlines for several years. Hundreds of people are killed every year by police officers, and many of these cases bring up issues of police brutality. More often than not, it is usually a white police officer and an african american offender encounter that sparks media attention. The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri is just one of these cases that has caused a major divide in the United States. Michael Brown was fatally shot by Officer Wilson after an unfriendly encounter in the streets. Those who believe that Officer Wilson made the right decision in shooting Michael Brown, point to the fact that the grand jury chose not to indict him. Although Darren WIlson was not charged after the shooting of unarmed Michael Brown, some people believe that his actions were unlawful and he should have received some sort of punishment for his wrongdoing. Acknowledging all of the facts of the investigation, Officer Wilson did not act properly in the circumstances of the time. Many people believe that Officer Darren Wilson made the right decision when he fatally shot Michael Brown because he feared for his life. In a report by Rachel Clark and Christopher Lett, CNN reporters, they describe the incident that led to the shooting began when Wilson left the scene of a sick call and encountered Michael Brown with his friend Dorian Johnson walking in the middle of the ... • 25. Becoming A Police Officer To become a police officer, detective or criminal investigator, individuals must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old and capable of effectively meeting "rigorous physical and personal qualification standards." Candidates may also face disqualification if they possessed a felony conviction or drug use. All positions for the protective services are required to obtain at least a high school diploma or equivalent. The constant change in public opinion, morals, finances, socially acceptable behaviors, and cultural diversity limits the potential for implementation of a concrete model of law enforcement policy and procedure. In order to maintain the proper balance between law enforcement operations and the changing social dynamic it is imperative to measure the needs of the populace in relation to the change. Introduction Various aspects of society are impacted when strain is present between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve; a breakdown in system policy and procedure propels officers to the forefront of negative opinion relative to community relations. It becomes apparent that social discord is unbounded when the justice system fails to recognize discrepancies in the operations at a variety of levels. • 31. The Police Officer Bill Of Rights Abstract It is crucial that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the officer and its employers. This paper discusses the Police Officer Bill of Rights created by a subcommittee created by the Legislative Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the importance of it being implemented and standardized across the United States. The Amendments found in the United States Constitution contain several provisions to protect citizens from various infringements from the government. These provisions have greatly influenced what law enforcement is today. Due to the power of a law enforcement official, the public expects officers to be held to a higher ethical standard. Part of that expectation entails that officers will follow in the law and lead by example. Unfortunately, no one is perfect and departments will always have those law enforcement officers who stray from what is right and act questionably on and off duty. To ensure that officers are being held accountable for their actions, departments will employ their own Internal Investigation division to help identify, discipline, and/or remove employees found guilty of misconduct. Therefore, it is important that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the ... The only problem is that this quote is the extent of our knowledge as an outsider to the Greensboro Police force. I was able to get an inside look at what really happens in a day in the life of an everyday police officer. I spent two days at the department observing the officers and riding alongside one in the police car. I asked the officers what one word is that really stands out to them as blatant disrespect, 90 percent of them told me that word was pig. A "pig" is a slang term which is used to disrespect a police officer. Most officers say they will just ignore this but according to state law "it is illegal to make or use any utterance, gesture, display or abusive language that is intended to and likely to provoke violent retaliation." About 5 of the 20 officers I interviewed told me they have arrested people for repeatedly calling them a pig. Not only is this a normal reply, but most people, including me, do not know that officers can do this. While I was riding around in the patrol car with Officer Hank I saw firsthand that many people do not respect police officers. One person who he pulled over cursed, yelled, and all together disrespected Officer Hank due to their taillight being out after already being warned. Officer Hank told me he was not going to give them a citation before they disrespected him. I also found that when officers where cameras people are less likely to be disrespectful to them. • 39. Police Enforcement And Police Officers It is widely known that police officers are given a substantial amount of latitude concerning vehicular searches while on patrol. Many officers make it a habit to ask citizens they pull over if it 's okay to search their cars, while others will only ask if they have reason to believe that a suspect is hiding something. Either way, what should you do if the police search your car without your permission, and without first obtaining a search warrant? Most people know that police officers need one of three things to search your car: permission, probable cause or a warrant. Unfortunately, an officer will obtain one of those three things if he is determined to execute a search, even if there is a possibility that it will later be thrown out in court. If permission is denied and they don 't have sufficient evidence for a warrant, just about anything can be used for probable cause. For example, let 's say that you 're pulled over for speeding, and when the police officer takes your license and registration, he notices that your eyes are red. This is a common side effect of marijuana use (and about a thousand other things), but he might decide that he wants to search your car, so he asks permission. If you don 't give it, but there is a large jacket tossed over the passenger seat of the car, he can use that jacket and your red eyes to generate probable cause. After all, you might be concealing an ounce of marijuana underneath the jacket, and he would have to search your car if he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Police Officers And The Police Officer The colors red, white, and blue in America represents freedom. When a police officer approaches a civilian in today's times, those colors mean the absolute worst. With recent police mischief including shootings, red, white, and blue could mean absolute panic. Americans today feel as if there is a war with police officers. The most common question civilians have, why are innocent people being killed by police officers? The civic responsibility of a police officer is to serve and protect citizens while upholding the law. With many recent incidents, civilians no longer feel safe around authorities. A new policy proposed to congress by Barack Obama is for police officers to wear body worn cameras, or BWC's. "... nine in ten Americans support the use of cameras on cops" (Boone). Therefore, police officers should be required to wear body worn cameras in order to have better security, behavior, and evidence for crime scenes. First off, wearing body worn cameras will provide better security to both police officers and civilians. In an experiment composed by the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology (IoC), in which police officers in Rialto, California wore cameras as a part of their uniform for one year., results gathered from the experiment proved to be beneficial. According to the experiment, "... use–of–force by officers wearing cameras fell by 59% and reports against officers dropped by 87%..." (Lewsey). The job of an officer can effect their behaviors for the reason that the job requires full attention. I found it surprising that it is perceived that a domestic violence call is the most dangerous call an officer can receive. Police officers respond to a variety of calls that can be categorized as dangerous, but to say the most dangerous are domestic calls is misleading. Police are not often killed responding to domestic disturbances (Mona Margarita, 1980). The text notes that police are more likely to be killed responding to different calls. Police officers are more likely to be killed responding to robbers trying to run away from a crime scene (Margarita, 1980). It is a myth to believe that domestic calls are the most fatal. Before the owner hired police officers, a gang of armed men robbed his store and several other Hispanic stores with in a months time. They made off with an average about $20,000 from each robbery. The night of the robbery, during the course of the initial investigation, the owner inquired about hiring a police officer at night to provide security. • 71. Police Officers And Officers Police And Corrections Officers If My Mind Could Forget the Things My Eyes Have Seen Abuse by police officers and officers in penal institutions is a big subject in the media now. Turn to a news station and the chances of seeing at least on case are pretty high. The most unreported incidents, however, is actually assault on police officers and corrections officers. The media does not report these issues nearly as much as it tries to portray officer assault on criminals. Why is it that the media covers up the big issue of officer assault and reports the "innocent" criminals being assaulted? When the media is trying to scare someone they don't say criminals are bad, instead, make it seem like the selfless officers risking their lives are the bad guys and use it as a scare tactic to create distrust and panic in the public. Abuse falls under six definitions when applied to law enforcement. Physical abuse: The blatant beating, striking, or physical mistreatment of an inmate. This is a very vague area because any physical contact with an inmate can be reported as abuse. Psychological abuse: The mental degradation of an inmate through embarrassment, unnecessary command or criticism. Unlawful interrogation, which is literally unheard of anymore, means the use of starvation, sleep deprivation, dehydration, etc. Excessive force: When compliance must be obtained physically and the amount of force used far exceeds the need. Torture: the use of stress positions water boarding and hot boxing, also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Police Officers And Police Officer There is enough evidence to show that police officers are using an excess of force, and in some occasions, lethal force in their daily routine. It is now normal for people to get scared when they are in the presence of a police officer. It is not a coincidence because these police officer have created their own reputation. Recent incidents involving police officers shooting innocent people are raising doubts about how police officers are trained, and the credibility in the Unites States Justice System. Ginger Otis in Police Still 'Have a License To Kill', a Year After Eric Garner Was Choked to Death, Says His Mother, shows many controversial cases such as Eric Garner's case where he was choked to death by a police officer in New York city. Also, Michael Brown an unarmed black teen that was shot to death in Ferguson, MO, or Tamir Rice a 12 year old boy that was playing with a toy gun in Cleveland, and several others. Also, it includes the decisions of the Grand jury on some of the cases where only two officers were charged. The discomfort of the community became present and they started movements like "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" in the Brown's case and "I Can't Breath" in the Garner's case. Unfortunately, this issue has not stopped, and people still get hurt by police officers. Decisions of the Grand jury are putting in danger the credibility of the United States System Justice. Garner's mother stated, "It doesn't matter if you wear blue jeans, a blue suit or a blue uniform, if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Police Officer Analysis These two aforementioned events compels me, as a concerned citizen and veteran, to reassess the standards and the roles of our contemporary policing agencies as well as individual law enforcement officers. I believe that by changing the people who are police as well as increasing diversity and officer education would be an effective strategy when dealing with social issues and law enforcement. For instance, when it comes to excessive use of force, discrimination and the like. In regards to the two incidents that involved excessive use of police force, responses to the assault on both King and Garner have varied among the police, the public, and academic circles. Since law enforcement officers are human it is quite possible that individual officers within a department are merely microcosms of society. In other words, this sub–culture within the policing culture, abbreviates in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger (i.e. society, clubs, and groups,). Moreover, if a police recruit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When dealing with civilians law enforcement officers rely on their use of discretion to guide them through certain situations and that ultimately dictates how an individual officer will behave or react. As we know, the face of America is changing and along with it the role of the contemporary officer is expanding beyond a "crime fighter". In a well–known article, Carl B. Klockars, professor of criminal justice at the University of Delaware, wrote, "the troublesome issue in the Dirty Harry problem," as stated by Klockers,"is not whether a right choice can be made, but that the choice must always be between two wrongs. And in choosing to do the either wrong, the police officer inevitably taints or tarnishes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Police Officer Probation Officer How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer, and corrections officer in the performance of their duties? There are vast and simiular reasons that all of these officers have to conduct legal searches. For police officers as we learned in several chapters, there are issues that come with their abilities to conduct legal searches, for example a police officer cannot just approach someone on their front porch and demand to enter their home to search for illegal substances or arms etc. However, if one was driving by your home and seen you in your garage with what appeared to be a meth lab or marijuana grow operation then they can stop to search as it would be a duty of theirs to protect the community. A search where one person would feel that they have a reasonable expectation of privacy cannot happen without a warrant. The police officers job abilities can ... They are able to make sure that you are not arround other people whom are convicted of crimes and they are able to establish guidelines on where they may be at certain times as well, most of the times this is ordered by the courts as part of their conditional release but it is only the ability of the probation and parole officers legal positions that they are able to enforce this. In their duties they do not have to observe the reasonable expectation of privacy nor obtain a warrant they may enter your home and vehicle search at any time.. A parole/probation officers responsibilities also help in issues where the police get re–involved in a case or where the courts are now moving forward with a violation of an offender.
