2. Initial thoughts…
The Gangnam style video is one of the most iconic music videos in recent years
and this is why in my opinion I would classify it as the best music video. The
immense response and virility the video received on YouTube was insane. It is
currently the most viewed video on YouTube. I also believe that sythanesia is
heavily used within the video and created its success. The Gangnam style song
on its own would not have had the success it did without the video. This created
the viral storm centred around the dance and Korean culture. Furthermore, the
personality of PSY himself is shown through the use of grain of voice theory.
3. The video..
The video itself is a concept/performance video with PSY being the main focus of the video via
grain of voice theory. The actual song itself is in Korean and therefore does not create much
connection with the audience on its own. However, the video with its funny concepts and
dancing helps to make the video extremely appealing and added to its virility massively.
Here we clearly see the ‘wacky’
concept of the music video and how
the main singer is the focus.
4. Continued.
The mass amount of views Gangnam style received was amazing and this is why I believe this is
the best music video. Without the memorable concepts within the video such as the dancing
child the song would not have been as successful. This is a clear example of how pivotal a music
video can be in the success of a song. For example, I do not personally like the Gangnam style
song however its video got my attention due to the wackiness of the video and therefore this
video more than any resonated with me as it made me like a song I would have not before.
The current YouTube views of the official video.
5. This screenshot clearly shows how
grain of voice theory is used within
the video. The main singer is the
central focus of the video and
gains most of the screen time –
helping the audience connect with
him.
Here we clearly see the
performance/concept style to the
video. This gave it originality and
helped to create a feel and image to
the song – sythanaseia.
