Acceptance Letter To Berklee Essay
On March 31st, this year, I received my acceptance letter from Berklee College of Music, one of the world's best contemporary music schools. I was
passionate about music since the age of nine, and this passion drove me towards pursuing a career in music. Despite of my family's urge for me to
take the American standardized tests, so that I could apply to universities all across the United States, I remained true to my conviction of applying
only to a music school. Thus, my options were few in number. But a (insert metaphor here) of relief struck me when I received my acceptance letter
from Berklee. However, looking at the price tag of attending Berklee, I began facing conflict within myself and with my family about attending.
Finally, after a lot of thought, I decided not to attend the renowned music school in Boston. My decision to not attend Berklee was a huge set back, but
had many advantages and opened doors to many more opportunities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Several of the professors at Berklee have good experience with the music industry. Quincy Jones, a Berklee graduate, was the music producer for
Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad albums, which were platinum hits. Working with experienced professors would have increased my scope to reach
heights in my musical knowledge. The students who get admitted into Berklee have immense talent in their principle instrument and are extremely
competitive. Collaborating with such students would have created more space for improvement and would subsequently open doors to musical
opportunities. Apart from the above mentioned factors, Berklee has state of the art music studios, orchestras, and equipment. Being a part of
productions, involving the above mentioned paraphernalia, would have given me a taste of real world

Personal Statement: How Music Teachers Affect The World
Music teachers affect the world in many ways. I chose a career in music because I've always succeeded in playing music and I've always had a
passion for it. I love creating, playing and teaching music. Music teachers can create musicians, and recognize natural talents. Music can give other
people entertainment and it also allows musicians to express their feelings non–verbally. I have a lot of experience in music. I've been in concert band
for six years now, I've been in marching band for four years, and I've been in drum corps for two years, playing multiple instruments, such as
mellophone, flute, and trumpet. I plan on going on in drum corps and going into DCI, (Drum Corps International) when I turn 18, to give me more
experience. Music teachers help shape musicians and bring out talent in students while also leading and guiding them to be the best they can be.
Music needed a tempo so it all stayed together, so in early orchestral days it was brought about. A tempo is a speed at which music should be played at.
Tempo was often kept orally or by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being a music teacher improves neural activity. Playing an instrument requires more use of the brain than regular, every–day, activities. Fine tunes and
auditory skills which form a better sense of sharper hearing and the ability to predict a pattern. It can create emotional development, emotional
encouragement and helps with self–esteem and anxiety. It can develop critical thinking and it provides students with endless opportunities to be
creative and original. (www.musicedmasters.kent.edu) Being a music teacher also brings mastery of memorization because musicians are constantly
using their memory to perform. It also creates perfectionism. Musicians learn to do things to the best of their ability to make everything as good as they
can. It is also scientifically proven that musicians have higher test scores than not musically inclined students.

Post-Secondary College Education: A Case Study
There are many options for students that wish to get a post–secondary school education. Two colleges available for students are Purdue University
(Purdue) and Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology (Rose–Hulman). While there are some basic similarities that are apparent, many differences exist
between Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology and Purdue University.
There is a big difference between the expenses of the two colleges. One difference is the on–campus cost for the colleges. The total on campus cost for
Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology averages at about $58,740 (College Navigator). In contrast, the total on campus cost for Purdue University is
only about $23,002 ("Purdue University–Main Campus"). Another significant difference in costs is if someone chooses to stay off–campus with
family. Total off–campus with family cost for Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology is approximately $49,041 ("Rose–Hulman Institute of
Technology"). The total off–campus with family cost at Purdue University is around $16,312 ("Purdue University"). Overall, the cost of the colleges, no

Bruno Nettl's A Place of All Musics? Essay
In Bruno Nettl's article A Place for All Musics? Confrontation and Mediation he talked about how the "School of Music" and "Departments of Music"
are so far from the reality of accepting all music. These schools typically only study Western European art music and Nettl through this article is
pointing out the major flaws with this system as a distant observer. He wrote, "Even the various sorts of Western artmusic may not be included on
equal terms. Actually, there are some ways in which the music school functions almost as an institution for the suppression of certain musics. Its
library may avoid the purchase of popular music, and in decades past some music deans forbade students to play popular music or jazz in their spare
time. . ." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's very true that the vast majority of the s that music students study centralize around Western art music, but I also recognize the reasoning behind
that philosophy. Western art music standardized musical form as we see it and use it today. There is no questioning the importance of it, but I also
think that now it is possible to begin including more genres of music in the the mainstream coursework of today's music students. Nettl wrote, "The
Heartland music school evidently has a stake in a certain degree of musical coexistence." Even though we are beginning to see this exact shift it would
behoove the music school to include classes such as Oriental music, music of the 60s (Beatles), music of Africa, and the creation of hip–hop just to
name a few that come to mind as possible choices that could really broaden the horizon for many music majors around the country. After talking
about the musical canon so much in class and reading about it more in this article, it has made me think of how limited we have become as
musicians because of it. The musical canon itself only contains a few composers or pieces while excluding hundreds of composers and pieces, many
of which we are not aware of. So as a musician I think we have to ask ourselves what or who are we missing. Are we like these music school that Nettl
is referring to in his

Texas Tech University Scholarship Essay
Scholarships have always been a mandatory aspect of my college career. As an undergraduate student at Texas Tech University, I was solely
responsible for paying for my tuition and I applied for as many scholarships as I could find. Working throughout the years was necessary so that I
could afford my tuition. While my parents wanted to help me, they were not financially able to. One of my sisters currently attends Texas A&M
University and my other sister will attend college in 2 years. Because of this, finances in my home have been tightly spread. In order to return to school
to receive my Master's Degree, I will have to apply for loans and scholarships once again.
Music has been one of my greatest passions throughout my life. Being involved in music at Texas Tech University was not only a way to relieve
stress, it gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader. I was a member of the Goin' Band from Raiderland, Texas Tech's marching band, for four
years. During my time as a member of the Goin' Band, I was selected to become a visual instructor. As a visual instructor, I learned to work with a

Social Media Analysis: The Goal Of The Brass Roots
Since of the goals of the Brass Roots was to reach out to a younger audience, there needs to be communication strategies implemented which would
draw these individuals to acknowledging the group. It is known that there is a struggle for orchestras and other symphony groups to reach a younger
generation, and it is a general concern for groups which fall into the genre. A study conducted by Dartmouth College showed that at least 68% of
surveyed college students "would not feel comfortable attending a classical concert" (Hopkins, 2013). This study also stated that the major barriers
for students were the price of tickets, lack of fellow peers attending, and fear of the unknown (Hopkins, 2013). Social media provides groups like The

Does Music Help Students While Studying or Doing Homework?...
Introduction In recent years it's become noticeable that students are using all different forms of music to help them while studying or doing homework.
When listening to music one may notice how that person may tap their foot or drum their fingers, even though they appear to be focused on the task in
front of them. The rhythm of the piece, whether it is fast or slow, causes the listener's heartbeat to synch with it (How Music Affects Our Mood, 2014).
The question however is which music to listen to. In some studies, test subjects show that the louder the music the more distracted the subjects became

The goal of this lab is to evaluate the effect of different music on test subjects taking math and literature tests, and see which music is the most
distracting and the most helpful for subjects. . The objectives of this lab are to observe the effect that the pop, country, rock, andclassical music have on
the test subjects, and to measure the amount of problem marked wrong against the amount of problems not completed during the task. They
hypothesis of the experiment is if the test subject is listening to their favorite genre of music, than the amount of problems marked wrong will be
greater than if they were listening to their least favorite music. Music is said to bring back a memory or a feeling (How Music Affects Our Mood,

them or won't effect them at all.
Method
First the test subjects were selected and asked to fill out their most current math and English classes and what grade they are in. Next they are asked
to rate the four songs (Dark Horse by Katy Perry, Cruise by Florida Georgia Line, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queens, and Four Seasons by Antonio

My Passion For Music And The Music Industry
I have always had a passion for music and the music industry, and my parents and I both knew that I was not going for school, unless it was for
something music related. The music industry is such a broad category and there are so many moving parts within this sector. I chose music promotion
for my career project, because it would allow me to go in and out of different departments within the music industry, along being able to work
alongside creative individuals for artists. Pursuing a career in music promotion would allow me "to have my cake and eat it too," so to speak.
Music has not only been my passion, but by main focus for at least the past ten years. I was always attracted to sound and music from as young as I

You do not need a specific degree or even a higher level of education in order to be successful in this industry. This industry, and a career in music
promotion is all about networking, ambition, a tenacious attitude and a passion for your work. Unlike many other professions, the daily workload
is not a fixed amount or even a fixed measure of time. There may be day where you are working from sun up to sun down, meeting other record
executives or members, making phone calls left and right, or on the road traveling to your next event. But then, there might be some moments when
your job is to solely make sure the artists you are managing are getting to their venues on time and meeting all the appropriate industry people.
Although all of this can seem quiet fast pace and a bit chaotic, one of the many benefits of this career is the expectation that the artists you are
promoting have of you. What do I mean by that? The artists actually expect you to hang out with them for the night after a big show, or even right
before shows. These artists are always down to party, and they need a crew to have fun with, and as a music promoter, you are a part of this crew!
There are not many other industries with this same expectation.
Like I mentioned earlier, a career in music promotion does not require a specific degree or level of certification, but that does

Stockhausen Life and Works
Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was born August 22, 1928 in the small town of Mödrath located just west of Cologne Germany. He was the first
child of three born to Simon and Gertrud Stockhausen. Early in his life, the Stockhausen family struggled financially. Germany was in a low point of
stability after WWI and most people had trouble making ends meet. Simon Stockhausen, a teacher at the time, was forced to move from one temporary
post to another on average twice a year. Unfortunately in 1932 when he was four years old, Stockhausen's mother Gertrud was committed into a
sanatorium. This was likely due to the depression she encountered associated with the instability, poverty, and having three children so close to one

The fine art concert I went to was an amazing experience. I was always part of a fine art concert and been participating since elementary school through
High School. Attending the college version of fine art was different. It was an eye opening movement. All the talented students coming to together and
presenting their talents. The two different high schooners Northwest and Lumen Christi presented. While lumen Christi performed six songs and
Northwest High School performed two. The students had a brilliantly talented that they showed off in front of hundreds of people. Which is pretty
encouraging and breath taking.

The Place Where Your Real Life
This is the place where your real life begins, where you get real life experiences like you'll never get anywhere else as you become an adult. It's
known as college, while it's a nightmare and displeasure to the thoughts of some potential high school graduates it is others safe haven for a
prosperous future. Yet many people forget that while you are looking for a place incollege to call your own, many colleges are just as selective in
their student body. To choose a college that is everything you've ever dreamed of that can build your life like no other place in the world is a beautiful
moment, but then there comes the task of getting accepted. To these college boards, there are specific criteria elements that the school board is looking
at in terms of their academic population. The first challenge is figuring out what a university wants in any of their students; then the question is how
will you be able to show the administrators that you not only can use those requirements to help yourself, but their student body as well. Each
individual must look at themselves to see just what they can best use about themselves and how to apply that in real life. My most contributing factors
to add to the college's community my academic interests, extracurricular activities, and life experiences. Initially, the attribute that will help me
enhance the college's community as a whole is my personal academic interests. In any college when it comes to academics it is the sole reason

Marshall University
Marshall University is very special to its community because of its founded history, cataclysmic plane crash, and its ability to come together as a town
when tragedy strikes. Marshall University was originally founded in 1837 for the children of local farmers. The local citizens of what is now
Huntington, West Virginia petitioned the General Assembly of Virginia to establish an advanced educational program named after Chief Justice John
Marshall. By 1850, financial support and the instruction given had deteriorated. Trustees then decided it was time to give it up and offered it to the
Western Virginia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The church accepted and was in control... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were enrolled in three programs: the primary, academic, and the normal. The primary school served children ages six to fourteen; the academic
school equipped students for business and for further education. The normal school trained teachers for their duties in the educational system.
Furthermore, the first class of normal–school students graduated in June 1870.
From 1880 into the 1900's, Marshall College went through many changes. Academia and the Music department expanded, enrollment finally surpassed
two–hundred, and the business department was established. In 1907, Lawrence J. Corby, the president, developed intercollegiate athletics. The school
also added an addition for alumni and College Hall, a dormitory for women. Additionally, in 1913, the legislation granted $158,000, $45,000 of that

The years between 1915 and 1946 struck a steady growth in expansions, enrollment, and improvement of a curriculum. Marshall's curriculum was then
eligible to be a four year college in 1920, and awarded its first baccalaureate degrees in 1921. The school also had more teachers earing terminal
degrees, developed a student government, and the athletics department earned the nickname the Thundering Herd. In spite of the Great Depression, a
music building, student union, two dormitories were built, and the Albert Gallatin Jenkins Laboratory School was established for education

Why I Chose Chicago University
In honesty, reading through the essay questions really sparked my interest in the University of Chicago. The prompts (that were proposed by students
who clearly have a proactive role in their own education) promote thinking and consideration beyond the cookie–cutter, "Why do you want to go here?"
college application. I would love to discuss how to compare apples and oranges, odd numbers' strange characteristics, and paradoxes our society faces
with a class full of peers equally interested and invested in the conversation. The fact that the University fosters and encourages such creativity and free
thinking even among its applicants drew my attention.
I know that I will not be "manufactured" and "trained" to find answers but instead encouraged to discover the "why" in whatever field I choose at the

Statement of Purpose to Attend a University
I have lived in San Antonio, Texas my entire life. Most of my family, from my mother's side, still lives here, too. Only two of my cousins have
ventured outside of Texas. Everyone else either lives in San Antonio or surrounding cities. One of my cousins, who still lives in Texas, is
attending Texas State University in San Marcos. He and I are the only two males from my mother's family who have been to college, so we are
each proud of the other, and we know that our family is proud of us. Attending college is a serious pursuit. For years I struggled with attending
college. Happily, having experienced a few rough semesters, I now see the overall college picture. I had a successful and satisfying six months of
college in 2013. My ambition is to continue working diligently to earn a college degree within the next two years. I was a talented musician during
my first twelve years of school. My musical skills enabled me to learn violin, piano, and my all–time favorite, percussion. I was a leader in the high
school band from being in charge of the drum line, earning first division ratings in every UIL solo event I entered, and being elected band president.
My vision was to become a successful contemporary drummer. I performed with various local bands, recorded several albums, took a few tours across
the country, and sought my musical future. However, I learned that although I loved and enjoyed playing music, it was a difficult avenue to a

School systems must hire at least one music educator, have a dedicated classroom, practice facilities, and access to musical instruments, a music
library, uniforms, and a variety of other essential items in order to have a quality program. It can be very expensive in the beginning, and there are
always maintenance costs along the way. I would argue that the benefits that are gained by having a quality program are worth the cost to the school
district. I would also argue that much of the money can be found in other ways than from the school district. Our high school band does not receive
any money from the school district for anything other than the fact that our two band directors are both Okaloosa County employees. During football

School Spirit in Schools
Who is to Blame? The lack of school spirit in schools is an increasing problem. The first group of people I blame is the school itself and the second
is the people at school. There's a ton of other things that I could blame for the fact that there's no school spirit but these are just the ones that first
came to mind. The school is the problem for the lack of school spirit. For starters, Having to go to school 35 hours of the week is not fun. Plus, for
those of us who have to get a job when we are able to thats not fun either. So you figure 35 hours at school plus a part–time job and you sleep. That
hardly leaves any time for us to relax. That's not even considering the fact that most of our teachers give homework. The first couple of weeks,
we're happy to be in school and we have school spirit then it slowly diminishes until the end of the year because we're getting burnt out. Speaking
of which, How do teachers expect us to recharge if they give homework over break?Personally, I hate school. It's really stressful and I don't exactly
have the best time while I'm at home. I have a very stressful life and school only makes it worse. So the fact that we're don't get time to recharge and
we get stressed out because of the amount of stuff we have to do, makes it hard to have school spirit. The other thing I blame for the lack of school
spirit is the people at school, that includes teachers. Sometimes, you hate teachers or other students and they just mess up your whole day,

A very wise mentor once advised me to, "Figure out what you do; get up every day and do that". Over my years as an undergrad music education

Participating in the school of honors allowed my professors to assign me additional projects, where I was able to seek out answers and, in turn, more
questions. In Music History 1, my professor, Dr. Jamie Weaver, enthusiastically encouraged my love of early music, specifically early folk music and
the influence of the crusades on the music of the common people. Research became a vital component of my education that I loved, not just an

in our culture to teach high school students higher thinking, writing and communication skills. I would love to develop a curriculum that uses
musicology as a vehicle to improve these skills for college preparation. I would like to write my thesis on the performance practice of a variety of

The Cost Of Music Education: Why Music?
Why Music? Around the country, children of all ages are interacting with music, either through listening or through instruction. Many parents believe
that children should learn an instrument or to sing in order to be more cultured and well–rounded, aiding in their future endeavors. However, there is
much more to music than culture. Studies have shown that students who are involved in a music program at a school or take private lessons are more
likely to achieve higher on standardized tests and have higher IQ scores. They also show that young students who take music classes develop language
skills and recall information better than their non–musical counterparts. Music education, therefore, is extremely beneficial to our world's youth. Music

Many cite the cost of music programs for districts as a reason to cut the arts. Many parents believe that funding should go towards reading, math,
and sports that promote sportsmanship and friendly competition. However, according to a study done by the National Association of Music
Merchants (NAMM), the average cost for one student to participate in music education programs is $187 (Nat'l Association of Music Merchants).
The study was conducted by Mark L. Fermanich at the University of Colorado at Denver and has been used to carefully assess the cutting of funds
to music programs for many school districts across the country. Another reason that some parents do not support music education in schools is
because students can seek music education elsewhere. From personal experience, the cost of a private teacher is much higher than the cost of a
public school education in music. For instance, in Lexington School District One in South Carolina, specifically Pelion High School, the cost to rent
an instrument from the school and be in band class is $40, $20 for the rental fee and $20 for the class. To take lessons at the University of South
Carolina's Community Music School, it is $325 for six one–hour lessons (University of South Carolina School of Music). It is much more
cost–effective for students to study music at a public school than to find somewhere else to take lessons or find

The Importance Of Music Education
High schools across the country are working hard to defund their art programs, primarily because they believe that they are less important than the
standard studies of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Not only should students take an arts program during their high school careers, but they should
also take at least two semesters to be able to gain all that they can from one of the particular programs. It is now more important than ever to ensure an
equally balanced education between the standard and art classes. Studies have shown that participation in arts such as music has had a significant impact
on a student's learning process in an extremely positive way (Judson). Teachers and principals are beginning to realize how important these programs
really are because they can see the improvement in their student's academic scores and involvement with the school. High school students, who, for
example, take a music program during their educational career, tend to have a different working brain than a student who is not involved in these
programs (Brown). Music education greatly enhances students' understanding and achievement in non–musical classes (Kalivrentenos). Research
shows that students involved in music use more of their brains because playing a musical instrument requires it (Brown). The standard reading, writing,
and arithmetic only require one half of the body's brain, but music requires the other half. Those who disagree, point out that a future career requires a

Marching Band was very popular when it was first introduced into the United States, and it is still around today. Most colleges and high schools have
a large variety of bands offered to their students. Not only schools offer band, if someone is interested in band but do not want to go to college, the
military also offers band. Marching band originated in the military as a small group but eventually became very successful and expanded to schools,
also evolving instruments and creating different forms of bands.
Music was needed and used in the military before they even created a band. When soldiers wanted a boost of excitement to help them succeed during
war they would have people play upbeat music on their instruments. (U.S. Army 1,2). Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This variety of bands are different in several ways. Concert bands sit down and do not move as they play their music and put on concerts. (The World
Book Encyclopedia 75). People in concert band are often also in marching band. When marching season is over, concert band begins. Parade bands
play upbeat types of music called marches. (Wayland Middle Schools 2). Many marches played by these bands are patriotic and military related.
Parade bands are mostly only seen performing in parades. (The New World Book Encyclopedia 2). Jazz bands are very unique, African Americans
like Louis Armstrong introduced people to jazz music. (The World Book Encyclopedia 74). Jazz bands often included piano, bass, drums, and
occasionally a lead singer. (The World Book Encyclopedia 75). Musicians who play in a jazz band or are just playing in general are told to add
some "swing" to their notes. Adding "swing" is not a simple task. It makes learning jazz extremely difficult. John Philip Sousa once said "Jazz will
endure just as long as people hear it through their feet instead of their brains." (Hughes 24). Drum corps are percussion only bands. The percussion
contains drums, pit, cymbals and the auxiliary of band. Drum corps include bass, snare, tenors and cymbals. (New World Encyclopedia Contributors
4). Marching band started a long time ago. It started to become very popular around 1885–1910. (Rhodes 2). When it comes to instruments, marching
band is really diverse. It includes percussion, brass instruments, pit, and the woodwind instruments. During marching season the band also includes
majorettes and flag corp. (New World Encyclopedia Contributors 2). Marching band is very time consuming, there is an entire three weeks called

Acceptance Letter To Berklee Essay

  • 1. Acceptance Letter To Berklee Essay On March 31st, this year, I received my acceptance letter from Berklee College of Music, one of the world's best contemporary music schools. I was passionate about music since the age of nine, and this passion drove me towards pursuing a career in music. Despite of my family's urge for me to take the American standardized tests, so that I could apply to universities all across the United States, I remained true to my conviction of applying only to a music school. Thus, my options were few in number. But a (insert metaphor here) of relief struck me when I received my acceptance letter from Berklee. However, looking at the price tag of attending Berklee, I began facing conflict within myself and with my family about attending. Finally, after a lot of thought, I decided not to attend the renowned music school in Boston. My decision to not attend Berklee was a huge set back, but had many advantages and opened doors to many more opportunities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Several of the professors at Berklee have good experience with the music industry. Quincy Jones, a Berklee graduate, was the music producer for Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad albums, which were platinum hits. Working with experienced professors would have increased my scope to reach heights in my musical knowledge. The students who get admitted into Berklee have immense talent in their principle instrument and are extremely competitive. Collaborating with such students would have created more space for improvement and would subsequently open doors to musical opportunities. Apart from the above mentioned factors, Berklee has state of the art music studios, orchestras, and equipment. Being a part of productions, involving the above mentioned paraphernalia, would have given me a taste of real world ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Personal Statement: How Music Teachers Affect The World Music teachers affect the world in many ways. I chose a career in music because I've always succeeded in playing music and I've always had a passion for it. I love creating, playing and teaching music. Music teachers can create musicians, and recognize natural talents. Music can give other people entertainment and it also allows musicians to express their feelings non–verbally. I have a lot of experience in music. I've been in concert band for six years now, I've been in marching band for four years, and I've been in drum corps for two years, playing multiple instruments, such as mellophone, flute, and trumpet. I plan on going on in drum corps and going into DCI, (Drum Corps International) when I turn 18, to give me more experience. Music teachers help shape musicians and bring out talent in students while also leading and guiding them to be the best they can be. Music needed a tempo so it all stayed together, so in early orchestral days it was brought about. A tempo is a speed at which music should be played at. Tempo was often kept orally or by ... Fine tunes and auditory skills which form a better sense of sharper hearing and the ability to predict a pattern. It can develop critical thinking and it provides students with endless opportunities to be creative and original. (www.musicedmasters.kent.edu) Being a music teacher also brings mastery of memorization because musicians are constantly using their memory to perform. It also creates perfectionism. Musicians learn to do things to the best of their ability to make everything as good as they can. It is also scientifically proven that musicians have higher test scores than not musically inclined students. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two colleges available for students are Purdue University (Purdue) and Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology (Rose–Hulman). While there are some basic similarities that are apparent, many differences exist between Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology and Purdue University. There is a big difference between the expenses of the two colleges. One difference is the on–campus cost for the colleges. The total on campus cost for Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology averages at about $58,740 (College Navigator). In contrast, the total on campus cost for Purdue University is only about $23,002 ("Purdue University–Main Campus"). Another significant difference in costs is if someone chooses to stay off–campus with family. Total off–campus with family cost for Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology is approximately $49,041 ("Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology"). The total off–campus with family cost at Purdue University is around $16,312 ("Purdue University"). Overall, the cost of the colleges, no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Bruno Nettl's A Place of All Musics? Essay In Bruno Nettl's article A Place for All Musics? Confrontation and Mediation he talked about how the "School of Music" and "Departments of Music" are so far from the reality of accepting all music. These schools typically only study Western European art music and Nettl through this article is pointing out the major flaws with this system as a distant observer. He wrote, "Even the various sorts of Western artmusic may not be included on equal terms. Actually, there are some ways in which the music school functions almost as an institution for the suppression of certain musics. Its library may avoid the purchase of popular music, and in decades past some music deans forbade students to play popular music or jazz in their spare time. . ." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's very true that the vast majority of the s that music students study centralize around Western art music, but I also recognize the reasoning behind that philosophy. Western art music standardized musical form as we see it and use it today. There is no questioning the importance of it, but I also think that now it is possible to begin including more genres of music in the the mainstream coursework of today's music students. Nettl wrote, "The Heartland music school evidently has a stake in a certain degree of musical coexistence." Even though we are beginning to see this exact shift it would behoove the music school to include classes such as Oriental music, music of the 60s (Beatles), music of Africa, and the creation of hip–hop just to name a few that come to mind as possible choices that could really broaden the horizon for many music majors around the country. After talking about the musical canon so much in class and reading about it more in this article, it has made me think of how limited we have become as musicians because of it. The musical canon itself only contains a few composers or pieces while excluding hundreds of composers and pieces, many of which we are not aware of. So as a musician I think we have to ask ourselves what or who are we missing. Are we like these music school that Nettl is referring to in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As an undergraduate student at Texas Tech University, I was solely responsible for paying for my tuition and I applied for as many scholarships as I could find. Working throughout the years was necessary so that I could afford my tuition. While my parents wanted to help me, they were not financially able to. One of my sisters currently attends Texas A&M University and my other sister will attend college in 2 years. Because of this, finances in my home have been tightly spread. In order to return to school to receive my Master's Degree, I will have to apply for loans and scholarships once again. Music has been one of my greatest passions throughout my life. Being involved in music at Texas Tech University was not only a way to relieve stress, it gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader. I was a member of the Goin' Band from Raiderland, Texas Tech's marching band, for four years. During my time as a member of the Goin' Band, I was selected to become a visual instructor. A study conducted by Dartmouth College showed that at least 68% of surveyed college students "would not feel comfortable attending a classical concert" (Hopkins, 2013). Introduction In recent years it's become noticeable that students are using all different forms of music to help them while studying or doing homework. When listening to music one may notice how that person may tap their foot or drum their fingers, even though they appear to be focused on the task in front of them. The rhythm of the piece, whether it is fast or slow, causes the listener's heartbeat to synch with it (How Music Affects Our Mood, 2014). The question however is which music to listen to. In some studies, test subjects show that the louder the music the more distracted the subjects became (Manthei, 2014). • 21. Stockhausen Life and Works Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was born August 22, 1928 in the small town of MГ¶drath located just west of Cologne Germany. He was the first child of three born to Simon and Gertrud Stockhausen. Early in his life, the Stockhausen family struggled financially. Germany was in a low point of stability after WWI and most people had trouble making ends meet. Simon Stockhausen, a teacher at the time, was forced to move from one temporary post to another on average twice a year. Unfortunately in 1932 when he was four years old, Stockhausen's mother Gertrud was committed into a sanatorium. This was likely due to the depression she encountered associated with the instability, poverty, and having three children so close to one another. In 1935 Shortly after his wife became ill, Simon Stockhausen was promoted to head teacher at a small village school located in Altenburg. The newly formed Third Reich led by Adolf Hitler used him in this position to influence the local community by spreading propaganda and organizing fundraisers for the new movement. Karlheinz Stockhausen showed an early interest in music and the family piano. The family also owned a radio that young Stockhausen listened to and attempted to imitate. Our high school band does not receive any money from the school district for anything other than the fact that our two band directors are both Okaloosa County employees. During football season, our boosters sell football programs, and work the concessions stand during the football games. We pay for our gas and bus drivers to go to the away football games, and our competition fees are paid for out of our concession stand profits. The student's band fees for first semester pay for the upkeep on school owned instruments, (the students who use those instruments pay rentals which cover cleaning fees) upkeep on marching uniforms, marching season music and the half time show choreography. During concert season, our concert uniform repair/replacement, concert music, and competition fee is paid by the student's spring semester fees. The students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. School Spirit in Schools Who is to Blame? The lack of school spirit in schools is an increasing problem. The first group of people I blame is the school itself and the second is the people at school. There's a ton of other things that I could blame for the fact that there's no school spirit but these are just the ones that first came to mind. The school is the problem for the lack of school spirit. For starters, Having to go to school 35 hours of the week is not fun. Plus, for those of us who have to get a job when we are able to thats not fun either. So you figure 35 hours at school plus a part–time job and you sleep. That hardly leaves any time for us to relax. That's not even considering the fact that most of our teachers give homework. The first couple of weeks, we're happy to be in school and we have school spirit then it slowly diminishes until the end of the year because we're getting burnt out. Speaking of which, How do teachers expect us to recharge if they give homework over break?Personally, I hate school. It's really stressful and I don't exactly have the best time while I'm at home. I have a very stressful life and school only makes it worse. So the fact that we're don't get time to recharge and we get stressed out because of the amount of stuff we have to do, makes it hard to have school spirit. The other thing I blame for the lack of school spirit is the people at school, that includes teachers. Sometimes, you hate teachers or other students and they just mess up your whole day, ... • 36. Music Personal Statement A very wise mentor once advised me to, "Figure out what you do; get up every day and do that". Over my years as an undergrad music education major, I found one thing to be a constant – I could not help but ask questions. I was unable to find contentment simply learning what was taught. Participating in the school of honors allowed my professors to assign me additional projects, where I was able to seek out answers and, in turn, more questions. In Music History 1, my professor, Dr. Jamie Weaver, enthusiastically encouraged my love of early music, specifically early folk music and the influence of the crusades on the music of the common people. Research became a vital component of my education that I loved, not just an assignment. As opportunities to present my research arose, first for community music organizations, then for school events, professors began suggesting the field of musicology as a potential path after graduation. The various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I see two possible career routes that I could pursue. This first would be the more traditional route of teaching music history at a college or university, which I believe would be a path I would thoroughly enjoy. The second path I have considered is combining my love of musicology with the need I see in our culture to teach high school students higher thinking, writing and communication skills. I would love to develop a curriculum that uses musicology as a vehicle to improve these skills for college preparation. I would like to write my thesis on the performance practice of a variety of folk styles, based on the historical heritage of the style. Understanding the history of middle eastern music, celtic music, and Western Swing, for example, allows the performer to do justice to the music being played, and allows the teacher to educate students on world music in a culturally responsive ... • 37. The Cost Of Music Education: Why Music? Why Music? Around the country, children of all ages are interacting with music, either through listening or through instruction. Many parents believe that children should learn an instrument or to sing in order to be more cultured and well–rounded, aiding in their future endeavors. However, there is much more to music than culture. Studies have shown that students who are involved in a music program at a school or take private lessons are more likely to achieve higher on standardized tests and have higher IQ scores. They also show that young students who take music classes develop language skills and recall information better than their non–musical counterparts. Music education, therefore, is extremely beneficial to our world's youth. Music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many cite the cost of music programs for districts as a reason to cut the arts. Many parents believe that funding should go towards reading, math, and sports that promote sportsmanship and friendly competition. However, according to a study done by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), the average cost for one student to participate in music education programs is $187 (Nat'l Association of Music Merchants). The study was conducted by Mark L. Fermanich at the University of Colorado at Denver and has been used to carefully assess the cutting of funds to music programs for many school districts across the country. Another reason that some parents do not support music education in schools is because students can seek music education elsewhere. From personal experience, the cost of a private teacher is much higher than the cost of a public school education in music. For instance, in Lexington School District One in South Carolina, specifically Pelion High School, the cost to rent an instrument from the school and be in band class is $40, $20 for the rental fee and $20 for the class. To take lessons at the University of South Carolina's Community Music School, it is $325 for six one–hour lessons (University of South Carolina School of Music). It is much more cost–effective for students to study music at a public school than to find somewhere else to take lessons or find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Music Therapy Personal Statement When I went to college, I planned to be a musician. I spent my life studying music, and I was passionate about composing music theory. I spent hours looking at the keys, and I explored different methods to make unique sounds. I was required to take electives the first semester; I chose to take psychology. My first essay demonstrated the psychological dynamics of music therapy. As I studiedpsychology more in depth, the concepts paralleled those I studied in music theory. I began to examine different theoretical approaches to understand various aspects of behavior. My interest in music as a profession waned; I was obsessed with how the mind works and I decided to change my major to psychology. Throughout my undergraduate studies at Brooklyn ... • 41. The Importance Of Music Education High schools across the country are working hard to defund their art programs, primarily because they believe that they are less important than the standard studies of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Not only should students take an arts program during their high school careers, but they should also take at least two semesters to be able to gain all that they can from one of the particular programs. It is now more important than ever to ensure an equally balanced education between the standard and art classes. Studies have shown that participation in arts such as music has had a significant impact on a student's learning process in an extremely positive way (Judson). Teachers and principals are beginning to realize how important these programs really are because they can see the improvement in their student's academic scores and involvement with the school. High school students, who, for example, take a music program during their educational career, tend to have a different working brain than a student who is not involved in these programs (Brown). Music education greatly enhances students' understanding and achievement in non–musical classes (Kalivrentenos). Research shows that students involved in music use more of their brains because playing a musical instrument requires it (Brown). The standard reading, writing, and arithmetic only require one half of the body's brain, but music requires the other half. Those who disagree, point out that a future career requires a ... • 42. Marching Band History Marching Band was very popular when it was first introduced into the United States, and it is still around today. Most colleges and high schools have a large variety of bands offered to their students. Not only schools offer band, if someone is interested in band but do not want to go to college, the military also offers band. Marching band originated in the military as a small group but eventually became very successful and expanded to schools, also evolving instruments and creating different forms of bands. Music was needed and used in the military before they even created a band. When soldiers wanted a boost of excitement to help them succeed during war they would have people play upbeat music on their instruments. (U.S. Army 1,2). Most ... (The World Book Encyclopedia 75). People in concert band are often also in marching band. When marching season is over, concert band begins. Parade bands play upbeat types of music called marches. (Wayland Middle Schools 2). Many marches played by these bands are patriotic and military related. Parade bands are mostly only seen performing in parades. (The New World Book Encyclopedia 2). Jazz bands are very unique, African Americans like Louis Armstrong introduced people to jazz music. (The World Book Encyclopedia 74). Jazz bands often included piano, bass, drums, and occasionally a lead singer. (The World Book Encyclopedia 75). Musicians who play in a jazz band or are just playing in general are told to add some "swing" to their notes. Adding "swing" is not a simple task. It makes learning jazz extremely difficult. John Philip Sousa once said "Jazz will endure just as long as people hear it through their feet instead of their brains." (Hughes 24). Drum corps are percussion only bands. The percussion contains drums, pit, cymbals and the auxiliary of band. Drum corps include bass, snare, tenors and cymbals. (New World Encyclopedia Contributors 4). Marching band started a long time ago. It started to become very popular around 1885–1910. (Rhodes 2). When it comes to instruments, marching band is really diverse. It includes percussion, brass instruments, pit, and the woodwind instruments. During marching season the band also includes majorettes and flag corp. (New World Encyclopedia Contributors 2).
