Unit 13: Pitch Script
1. Welcome to my Unit 13 Pitch on my two magazines,
TeensRule and RockStars,
Before creating my magazines, I first had to think about and
plan the first key features to create a successful magazine.
As you can see on the board, I did a brief along with
inspirations ideas on each topic. For instance, the colour
palette for my magazine would use bright and bold colours and
would complement each other.
I also did a similar mind map for my second magazine, such as
the target audience, in which RockStars would be aimed more
towards the male audience of 15 to 24.
To help me gain more inspiration, I did an inspiration mood
board on three magazines of inspiration; Billboard, RESPECT
and Kerrang.
I chose Billboard get inspired for TeensRule, because, as you
can see, bright bold colours, complement each other and make
the other features stand out, such as the Masthead the main
images.
I personally liked the vertical masthead, which is what I took
into my magazine
I chose the rock magazine RESPECT, to help me with the
colours scheme of my second magazine, as you can see, the
dark colours of; grey black and white, bring the focus to the
masthead which is bold bright red. With this inspiration, I
developed this idea and decided to include this in my magazine
However, with the magazine, KERRANG, I decided to follow
the layout of their front cover, such as this one in particular,
because, I really like how the content of the cover lines are brief
eye—catching.
2. From the inspiration, I gained, I then had to explain my ideas in
my magazine Proposal, which consisted of; what Format would
I use, what Genre is my first magazine and how often would I
sell my magazine.
After planning my magazine in my proposal, I did a further
development at the end, in which this consisted of, what would I
develop further with the ideas of; Making a social media page,
creating an app, or Advertising my magazines
From my Proposal, it was time that I needed photos, and this is
when, I did a Photoshoot plan for both my magazines. As you
can see my example from RockStars, my plan had to consist
of; Who would be my model, what lighting would I use and
what would the wardrobe look like to suit my colour scheme.
Following on my Photoshoot plan, I also had to evaluate my
three key sections of, Front Cover, Double page spread and
back page in a Location Recce, which is basically a Risk
Assessment
What I included in each section, I had to evaluate and explain
why, for instance, the kind of shot types I would use and what
lighting would suit my images best.
I also included a screenshot of the email where I asked for
Theos consent to be my model.
Maslow was a good audience theory for my first magazine
TeensRule, as I wanted my content to be aimed towards
Explorers and Social Climbers, because, my content would
introduce and encourage the idea of social interaction through
social media.
Whereas, Hartley resembled RockStars male gender, although,
Class and Ethnicity are not necessary for my second magazine.
By creating a hand drawn draft and a graphic layout, this
planning process helped me visually see how I would layout my
magazine, with the inspiration from Billboard, Respect and
Kerrang. This example, I for my magazine TeensRule, as you
3. can see, the inspiration of the vertical masthead helped me
achieve an organised layout and more space for a larger main
image and placement for my strapline.
I did the same for my second magazine, RockStars, however,
with the inspirational layout from Kerrang, I went for a more
block type layout as well as label the features that would go
there, such the puff promotion near the center to be eye—
catching to the public.
With my House and Font Style, I wanted my colour scheme to
resemble the magazine Billboard, therefore, I went for the
colour a light blue, bright red and white, as these colours
complement each other and would relate to my model’s outfit.
By the help of the website, DaFont.com, I was able to look for
the right font style of Gunplay, for my masthead, I decided on
this because, the small gaps between each individual letter,
would look well with the colour scheme.
Whereas, my colours for RockStars, I went for black, white and
grey, because, these colours really suit the rock genre of my
second magazine and gave me more outfit ideas.
The font style of Blacklist, presented more of a soft edge, which
would be a good contrast between the masthead and main
image.
Creating two different magazine flat plans, I was able to
achieve a rough layout, if I were to create an actual magazine.
Each page would have a different layout and would contain
different features, for example, one double page spread would
have an interview
I did the same with my second magazine, however, alter the
layout and added new features, for instance, information on an
upcoming tours and single album reviews.
4. A production process, was good idea that helped me with my
Four Week Production plan. And these topics helped me with
this;
Here is an example of week one of my four-week production,
which consists of each day followed by the date, what must be
done during this day, and when should this be completed by.
Pricing and budgeting my magazines was kind of difficult, such
as, the salary amount that I should give for each employee and
what kind of employee should I have in my company.
The table shown followed by the sourced links helped me plan
the pricing and the jobs that would be needed as well as the
quantity.
Along with the pricing of equipment, I had to plan the pricing
and quantity of what kind of equipment I needed, for example,
for 30 employee, I needed, 30 computers, keyboards and
tables.
The help of the website, print24.com this website gave me an
estimate on the pricing on printing my magazine and how the
overall price, with the involvement of the paper quality type,
how many pages, and the style.
The pricing of advertising my magazines, was a bit challenging
for me as I had to calculate and work out the price for
advertising, a Full page for £5,000 and DPS for almost £10,000
and a Half page for over £2,000
And advertising my magazine through the website Frontline,
would be a good opportunity as they trade with the biggest
retailers, such as Kerrang
Visual Advertisement is key for any magazine, as, I had to
create and home page for both magazines,
I decided to present RockStars through a Facebook page and
TeensRule, through a Twitter account. Both these social media
5. apps would be very useful in giving information and updates on
the magazine.
Also, a YouTube account would be another great way to
interact with the public, such as the example of NME
After a lot of calculating and number, I was able to do a
breakdown of the pricing of each key factor. And from this I was
able to separate the Total Loss, for, Staff, Equipment and
Printing, with the Total Profit of Advertising and Marketing.
These are the final products for my first magazine TeensRule,
as you can see, the bright colours of red, blue and white, really
emphasize the magazines as a whole. I also created a rough
dps, which helped me decide and improve my magazine further
and I eventually came up and design this final dps.
As for my second magazine RockStars, the inspiration layout
from Kerrang and the house style of Respect helped me
achieve my final products as the dark colours really
complement each other and make the main image stand out
really well.
My chosen magazine, is RockStars, because, I really like the
organised layout, and the dark red really emphasizes a lot of
the surrounding features, such as the Masthead, really brings
out the Main images
