At a time when Delhi is grappling with a sudden spike in dengue cases, another
health crisis--swine flu--is looming over the city.Public health experts say viruses
proliferate the most during winter and people should be cautious about prolonged
cough, fever and chest infection--the classic symptoms of swine flu.
Swine flu or H1N1 influenza was at its most virulent form when it initially spread in
2009. Though doctors say most people have developed immunity to the virus,
there are concerns that its mutation could lead to more cases. Many parts of the
country , for example Ahmedabad, have reported an upsurge in swine flu cases
over the past few weeks.
Doctors said preventive vaccination is recommended for the elderly and those
suffering from co-morbidities such as diabetes. “Our government is prepared to
deal with any possible disease outbreak or upsurge in swine flu cases. We have
more than one lakh capsules and syrups of Oseltamivir (TamifluFluvir). If required
more capsules and syrups can be purchased,“ said a senior official.

He added that the state health department will also procure one lakh H1N1 vaccine to
immunize all health workers in Delhi, including those working in private sector.
Further, instead of celebrating Hand Washing Day on October 10, the government has
decided to observe a month-long sanitation awareness drive from October 15.
“We have also started awareness programmes, informing people about Dos and Don'ts to
prevent transmission of H1N1 virus. We have asked them to consult a doctor and to refrain
from self-medication,“ a senior health department official said.
According to health experts, the H1N1 influenza virus is likely to appear when the
temperatures dip and is transmitted rapidly as it spreads through air.
Swine flu had assumed epidemic proportions last sea son, which continued till midApril
this year afflicting over 4,259 people and claiming 12 li ves in the city.
According to a senior doctor at AIIMS, the hospitals in the city had faced difficulties in
handling the large number of swine flu cases last year. He stresses the need for public
awareness to check the spread of the infection.
