The AIIMS in Delhi is working to identify the specific subtype of dengue virus circulating in the city that has infected 831 people so far. The results of efforts to determine the subtype are expected within a week. There are four known serotypes of dengue virus, with types I and III typically causing milder cases and types II and IV associated with more severe disease. The health ministry has taken steps like ensuring testing kit availability and coordinating response efforts to handle the rise in dengue cases in Delhi.

The Union health ministry on Wednesday said it expects to learn within a week the
precise identity of the dengue virus subtype circulating in Delhi that has affected
831 people. The process of identifying the subtype is underway at AIIMS. Termed
by many experts as the world's most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral
disease, dengue is caused by four serotypes. While types I and III are mild causing
classic dengue fever and fever without shock, respectively , dengue types II and IV
are considered deadly. These cause fever, bleeding and a drop in platelet count.
“All four serotypes (1, 2, 3 and 4) of dengue were isolated from time to time in
various states. The report of the serotypes circulating in Delhi is expected within a
week,“ an official statement quoting Union health secretary B P Sharma said.
Till August 29, at least 831 persons were diagnosed with dengue in the national
capital. Two deaths have been officially reported due to the vector-borne disease
while another death is a suspected dengue case.

Asserting it is geared up to tackle the spurt in cases, the ministry has written
a letter to the urban development department urging it to allow access to
several unoccupied buildings and rooftops to check breeding.
It has also urged CPWD to undertake measures for vector control in
construction sites, basements, rooftops and unused flats and buildings.
Several meetings with municipal bodies, Delhi government officials, Delhi
Cantonment Board and central government hospitals has already taken place
to review preparedness. Adequate stocks of NS1 and IgM testing kits to
detect cases of dengue are available with 514 sentinel surveillance hospitals
and apex referral labs.
The health secretary also asked National Vector Borne Disease Control
Programme, the Delhi government and the municipal corporations to
coordinate their Information Education and Communication activities.
