The worst may be over for Delhi as hospitals have reported that dengue
cases have come down by 30% to 40% in the past two weeks. Delhi, this year,
faced the worst dengue crisis in 19 years. Data released by the South Delhi
Municipal Corporation, which collated information from all civic agencies, on
Monday showed a similar trend.
According to the latest report, Delhi witnessed 1,120 cases of the mosquito-
borne disease last week taking the total number of such cases to 7,606.
Officials said no confirmed dengue death occurred last week and death toll
this season remained 25, highest since 1996 when more than 400 people
succumbed to dengue.
However, independent reports from hospitals put the death toll at anywhere
between 30 to 40 persons. Sources said last week, a superintending engineer
in road transport and highways ministry suspected to have died of dengue.

In 2010, a total of 6,259 cases were recorded and only eight deaths were reported
throughout the year. Till October 3 that year, the total cases were 3,555, nearly half the
number reported during the same period this year. In the same duration, 120 cases were
registered in 2014, while in 2013 they stood at 2,557. Nearly 100 cases were recorded in
2012, while 2011 saw 283 cases.
“Now, lesser number of patients are visiting hospitals for dengue treatment. With decline
in temperature, the cases are expected to come down further,“ said Dr Rommel Tickoo,
senior consultant, internal medicine at Max hospital, Saket. Doctors at AIIMS, Safdarjung,
Apollo, BLK and other hospitals also confirmed the declining trend.
“Cases have come down significantly in the past 10 days. The proactive role of the state
government, intensive fogging and public awareness have played a role in it. However, we
should be alert since cases rise in October,“ said Dr R K Singhal, chairman, internal
medicine at BLK hospital.
Experts said the predominance of virulent strains of dengue--Type II and Type IV--led to the
outbreak this year.
