The possibility of rain over the next few days threatens to worsen the dengue
situation in the city . According to the Met department, thunderstorms are likely to
lash Delhi from Saturday to Wednesday . The highest probability of rain is between
Sunday and Tuesday , it said. Epidemiologists say rain causes accumulation of fresh
water in vulnerable spots such as drains, potholes and rooftops. Aedes aegypti
mosquitoes, which transmit the dengue virus into humans, breed in these spots.
“The current outbreak has broken the slumber, but the government must work on
a war-footing to check any further health crisis. It should map the vulnerable areas
on the basis of dengue cases from various areas and carry out fogging operations,“
said T Sunder Raman, a public health expert.
He said the poor state of primary health centres, which are considered the
backbone of health infrastructure in any state, has added to the woes. “The big
hospitals, both public sector and the privaterun, are flooded with patients. People
have lost faith in local clinics,“ Raman added.

This year, Delhi has witnessed more than 13 dengue deaths. Official figures show over 2,000 people
have been infected with the dengue virus.However, the patient load indicates a much higher
incidence.
Dr N K Ganguly , chairman of the department of research at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said the
government needs to chalk out a strategy to treat patients at primary health centres and refer only
the needy to tertiary care or super-specialty hospitals to avoid overcrowding and chaos.
“Fogging and anti-larval measures have to be stepped up. Public should be sensitized about how
equipment and objects like unused coolers and flower pots may serve as a mosquito breeding
ground,“ said Dr V M Katoch, former director general of ICMR.
According to Dr Ekta Gupta, microbiologist at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), dengue
has become endemic in Delhi and there are more frequent outbreaks due to co-circulation of all
four serotypes of the dengue virus.
A senior government official said, “MLAs are checking their constituencies on availability of
medicines, testing kits and cleanliness in hospitals. The CM himself has been holding meetings daily
. There is no reason to panic now.“
