GASTROSCOPY
What is a gastroscopy?
Why is a gastroscopy done?
How do I prepare for a gastroscopy?
What happens during a gastroscopy?
What happens after a gastroscopy?
WHAT IS GASTROSCOPY?
Gastroscopy is an examination of the upper digestive tract. The
oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.
Using an endoscope — a long, thin, flexible tube containing a
camera and a light to view the lining of these organs.
WHY IS A GASTROSCOPY
DONE?
It is usually done to investigate the cause of symptoms such as
heartburn, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or bleeding
from the digestive tract, and to make or confirm a diagnosis.
Some Conditions can also sometimes be treated during gastroscopy:
1, polyps can be removed
2, foreign objects can be removed
3, a narrowed oesophagus can be widened
4, enlarged veins in the oesophagus can be treated to stop and
prevent bleeding.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A
GASTROSCOPY?
You will be asked not to eat or drink anything for at least 6
hours before a gastroscopy.
You may be asked to stop taking medicines that can increase the
risk of bleeding for a few days before the test; these include
warfarin, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID)
medicines.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A
GASTROSCOPY?
You will be asked to lie flat, usually on your left side.
You are usually given a sedative and sometimes a pain-reliever medicine by
injection into a vein.
The back of your throat may be sprayed with a local anaesthetic to make it numb
and to help you not to gag.
A small mouthguard will be put between your teeth to stop you from biting the
endoscope and to protect your teeth.
Sometimes a special instrument can be inserted through the scope, and a small
sample of tissue removed (a biopsy).
COLONOSCOPY
What Is a Colonoscopy?
Why a Colonoscopy Is Performed?
How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy?
How a Colonoscopy Is Performed?
WHAT IS A COLONOSCOPY?
A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that is done to look for cancer, colon
polyps or other abnormalities inside your bowel.
Colonoscopy is done using an instrument called a colonoscope a long, thin,
flexible tube containing a camera and a light.
When inserted into the rectum and gently pushed along the colon, it allows the
doctor to see the lining of the whole large bowel.
A tool can also be used during a colonoscopy to take samples (biopsies) or
remove abnormal tissue such as polyps.
WHY IS A COLONOSCOPY IS PERFORMED?
A colonoscopy is usually done to investigate symptoms such as
abnormal or change in bowel habits (including persistent
constipation or diarrhoea), bleeding from the anus, abdominal
pain, unexplained weight loss, or other problems with your
intestines.
As well as being used as a screening tool to look for early signs
of bowel cancer, colonoscopy can also be used for surveillance in
cases where there have been bowel abnormalities detected in the
past, such as polyps or cancer.
HOWTO PREPARE FOR A COLONOSCOPY?
Have to to make changes to your diet to prepare for the
colonoscopy:
1,The week before – take seeds out of your diet
2,The day before – instead of eating solid foods, drink only clear
fluids, such as broth and water
3,The day of the colonoscopy – don’t eat or drink anything for at
least two hours before the procedure.
The patient is usually asked to drink a special preparation
solution (called lavage) to further clean out your bowel.
The timing of when you drink the solution will depend on when
your colonoscopy is scheduled:
1, early morning colonoscopy – drink the solution the night
before
2, mid-morning colonoscopy – drink half the solution the night
before, and half early the next morning
3, afternoon colonoscopy – drink the solution the morning of the
procedure
People above the age of 50 should have once in 10 years. And
once they reach 60 it is recommended to be taken every 5 years
due to high risk of cancer. After Turing 75 or around 80 the are
advised not to take colonoscopy.
HOW A COLONOSCOPY IS
PERFORMED?
During the procedure, you’ll lie on your side on a padded examination table.Your doctor
may position you with your knees close to your chest to get a better angle to your colon.
While you’re on your side and sedated, your doctor will guide a flexible, lighted tube called
a colonoscope into your anus.
Slowly and gently, they’ll guide it up through the rectum and into the colon.
A camera on the end of the colonoscope transmits images to a monitor that your doctor
will be watching.
Once the scope is positioned, your doctor will inflate your colon using carbon dioxide gas.
This gives them a better view.
Your doctor may remove polyps or a tissue sample for biopsy during this procedure.
The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
Thank you
