1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. My film poster develops and challenges forms of real film posters. The first technique that I have used which is similar to a real film
poster is direct mode of address. The image of the character on the poster is looking straight forward towards the camera, therefore
capturing the audiences attention. This is an effective technique for attracting people to look at the film poster. The title of the film in
both posters is the largest text on the page as this is the name that the producers want to stick in the audiences head. It is also the
first thing that the audience will see when they look at the poster. Another technique that my product has developed from a real film
poster is the production text. The production text is the block text at the bottom of the page that is wrote in ‘steel tongs’ font, this text
shows the producers and developers of the film and makes the poster look professional and realistic. I used a tagline in my poster to
imitate a real film poster, my tagline ‘Are you afraid of the dark?’ is similar to the Manchurian candidate’s tagline ‘everything is under
control.’ This tagline hints mystery in the line and leaves the audience wanting to know more. Finally I used contrasted colours in my
film poster which is a popular technique for real film posters. I used a mix of dark and lights colours in my poster to fit the theme of
‘horror’ in my film. This is a subliminal technique as it hints to the audience which genre the film is before they have even seen it.
3. My magazine front cover develops and challenges real forms of magazine covers. The first thing that you see when you look at the
magazine cover is the masthead. This is shown on both magazine covers as I used the masthead title ‘EMPIRE.’ The size of the
masthead is very large as the producers want the name of the magazine to stick in the audiences head. My magazine front cover
looks smart and realistic due to the barcode and date/price of the magazine. I added these in as they develop forms of real media
products as all film magazines will contain this information. Another way that my magazine cover has developed forms of real media
product is the way that the image takes up most of the page with text around it. The photo takes up a great deal of the page as the
producers want this to stand out the most and capture the target audiences attention influencing to buy the magazine. If the photo
looks mysterious or interesting then people will likely become curious and want to read more. I ensured that when creating my front
cover I kept as much text off of the face of the model as I could, as this makes the cover look smarter and follows in the steps of
existing successful magazine covers. Another technique that I have used on my magazine cover is a catch line. At the bottom of my
magazine cover says ‘exclusive! 3 page interview..’ similar to the real EMPIRE magazine catch line which says ‘the ultimate guide 3
collectors editions!’ This is a very effective method of capturing the audiences attention as this line will interest the target audience
and persuade them to want to carry on reading more and look further inside the magazine.
