What does “Islam” mean?
The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”

SURAH AL-HAJJ (THE PILGRIMAGE)
MEDINAN PERIOD
Division: 623
1,2O people! Surrender under the guardianship of your Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], surely the moment of Qiyamat [Resurrection]
is a severe event. On the day when you will see it, every nursing woman will quit
nursing. And every pregnant woman will deliver her burden. And you will see people
intoxicated while they are not. That is because severe is the wrath of Allah.
3,4Some of the people dispute about Allah without knowledge and follow every
evil Satan. –It has been decreed about the evil Satan: “Surely, whoever takes Satan
as his guide; Satan will surely avert those who have taken him as their protector and
he guides them into the wrath of Jahannah [Hell]”.-
5O people! If you doubt that you shall be resurrected after you die, you should
know that We created you from soil, and then from a drop of semen, and then from
an embryo, and then a disfigured piece of flesh so We may show you what you are.
And We keep whomever We please in the womb for a predetermined term. Then We
emerge you as a child so you may reach maturity. And some of you will be reminded
that which you did in the past and failed to do while being obliged to/lives of some of
you are taken. And some of you are made to reach to miserably old age after having
received the knowledge. And then you see the Earth fade away; then it revives,
swells and yields all kinds of beautiful plants in pairs when We bring down rains
upon it.
6This is because Allah is the Truth, that He is the Only One Who can resurrect
the dead and He is the Omnipotent.
7The Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection] will surely come. There is no doubt about
it. And surely, Allah will resurrect those who rest in their tombs.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/1-7)
Division: 624
8Some of the people dispute about Allah without knowledge; without guidance;
without an enlightening Scripture.
9He twists/bends his hip/acts arrogantly to avert people from the path of Allah.
Disgrace is for him in this world. And on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection], We
will make him taste the wrath of the blazing Jahannah [Hell].
2. 2
10This is because that which his both hands brings forth and that Allah does not
treat good servants unjustly.
11-13And some of the people worship Allah on an undefined edge/in an
irresolute manner/without a defined frame. Therefore, when good comes upon them,
all questions in their minds will be eliminated and they will be assured. And when a
social fire/distress comes upon them, they will turn on their faces. They have lost the
world and Akhirat [Afterlife] as well. This is a clear loss. They invoke those among
the subordinates of Allah who are not capable of harming nor availing them. this is
the distant perversion. They invoke those whose harm is closer than their benefit.
How an evil intercessor and friend is that which they invoke.
14Surely, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds into the garden
of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] underneath of which rivers flow. Surely, Allah does
whatever He pleases.
15And whoever thinks Allah will not help him in this world and in Akhirat
should turn to us immediately in good faith, and he should also severe his ties with
the subordinates of Allah who would not avail nor harm him. Then let him see if this
plan will remove that which enraged him/that which he is obsessed with!395
16Thus We have revealed the Qur’an in such manifest Ayat. And surely, Allah
guides whomever He pleases/whoever wishes so.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/8-16)
Division: 625
17Surely, those who believe, who have converted to Judaism, the Sabeans/the
natural born pious, Christians, the Magians, and those who associate others with
Allah; surely, Allah will judge among them on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection].
Surely, Allah is over all things a witness.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/17)
Division: 626
18Have you not seen/thought about those who are in the Heavens and on the
Earth, the sun and the moon, stars, mountains, trees, all moving creatures and most of
the people surrender and prostrate before Allah? And upon many of them is the
punishment. And whomever Allah humiliates; there is no-one to exalt him. Surely,
Allah does whatever He pleases.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/18)
3. 3
Division: 627
19,22These two, the believer and the infidel; the one who consciously denies the
Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb, are two enemies who dispute about
their Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. But, garment of fire
will be cut for the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the
fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. Boiling
waters will be poured down upon them. Thus that which is within their bellies and
their skins will be melted. And for them will be iron maces. Whenever they intend to
escape out of anguish, they shall be returned and told: “Taste the blazing
punishment!”.
23Surely, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds into the
gardens of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] underneath of which rivers flow. And they
shall be adorned with golden bracelets and pearls. And silken will be their garments
in there. 24And they have been guided to good speech, to that which is good and
beautiful. And they are guided to the path of Allah.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/19-24)
Division: 628
25Surely, as for those who blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah
and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer],
those who forbid people from the Masjid al-Haram [the untouchable school of
theology] –both those who abide there to pray and those who come from outside- and
those who intend to go astray from the righteous path into injustice and evil way; We
will make them taste a painful punishment therein.
26-29And when We prepared for Abraham the land of that house/Kaaba saying:
“Never associate others with Me; keep My house pure and clean for those who
circumambulate, refuse injustice, acknowledge the oneness of Allah, prostrate and
surrender, make it known that theology education will be provided among the people
so they may witness certain benefits that belong to them and remember His name
over the beasts which Allah gives upon them as blessings on certain days. Let them
come to you on foot or riding fatigued beasts, passing over every deep valley! Then
let them clean and purify themselves. And let them fulfill their wows. Let them
circumambulate the ancient house/free house/Kaaba”. –So, eat from them and feed
the poor.-
30,31Thus it is! And whoever shows respect to those whom Allah made
untouchable; it better before for him before his Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer]. And all beasts other than those which have been declared to
you are made halal [permissible] to you. Therefore, avoid the evil of those idols as
those who turn to Allah, those who do not associate others with Him, and also avoid
4. 4
lies. And whoever associates others with Allah is like that which falls from the
Heavens and seized by birds or swept away by the wind.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/25-31)
Division: 629
36As for the cattle; We have made them among the signs of the very existence
of Allah. There are benefits in them for you. Therefore, remember the name of Allah
while you slaughter them, one of their fore legs is tied/while they are in line. And
when they fall onto their side, dead, eat them and give to those who are in need but
hide it and those who request from their meat. Thus We have made them prostrate
before you so you may be grateful for the blessings you are given.
32,33Thus it is! Whoever shows respect to that which is a sign of the very
existence of Allah, -surely this respect stems from the fact that their hearts are under
the guardianship of Allah-, there are certain benefits in them for you until a specified
term. Thereafter, their destination will be the ancient Bayt [House]/free
house/Kaaba.396
(103/22; Al-Hajj/36, 32-33)
Division: 630
34,35And for every people with a leader, We stipulated a way of servitude so
they may remember His name over the flawless beasts Allah gives upon them as
blessings. So, your God is the One God. Therefore, be Muslims only for Him. Give
the good tidings to those whose hearts shake with awe when Allah is mentioned,
those who are patient over the troubles that hit them, who perform Salat [Support
financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the
community] and spend from the blessings that We bestow upon them for the cause of
Allah, who prostrate sincerely to Allah.
37Their meat and blood will surely not reach Allah. However, only your
“submission of yourselves under His guardianship” will reach Him. He made the
cattle prostrate before you [created them so that they prostrate to you without
changing or advancing] so you may glorify Allah as you are instructed. And give the
good tidings to those who do good deeds.
38Surely, Allah defends those who believe. Surely, Allah likes neither
transgression nor extreme ungratefulness.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/34-35, 37-38)
Division: 631
5. 5
39-41Those who are fought have been allowed to fight back since they have been
treated unjustly; expelled out of their lands for saying, “Our Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is Allah!”.
And surely, Allah is the Only One Who can lead them to victory. Had Allah
not eliminated some of the people with other people, all the sprouts, buds and fruits
on the trees, harvested grains, legumes, thorns in barren lands, all built structures,
bazaars and malls; markets, all the Salat [Support financially and spiritually;
establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the community]; social support
institutions (workplaces; employment and procurement institutions, educational and
training facilities and security centers) and all the masjids within which the name of
Allah mentioned frequently would have been demolished.
Allah will surely help those who help Him –who perform Salat [Support
financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the
community] even though We have made them rich and wealthy, who give zaqat/tax,
instruct that which is compliant with the tradition/that is acceptable for all and who
forbid with Wahy [Revelation] and common sense that which is considered evil-.
Surely, Allah is the Almighty, the All Prevailing. And to Him belongs the
consequence of all matters.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/39-41)
Division: 632
42-44And if they should deny you, you should know that before them the people
of Noah, the people of Ad, the people of Thamud, the people of Abraham, the people
of Lot and the Companions of Midian denied as well. And Moses was also denied so
I gave the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that
He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] a respite. Then I
seized them. So, how was the consequence of denying Me!
45Then, there were many cities people of which did wrong; acted against their
own good by associating others with Allah so We manipulated/destroyed them. Their
roofs were collapsed and walls caved in; and how many abandoned wells and palaces
reinforced with lime/concrete!
46Have they not travelled across the Earth so they might have hearts to reason
and ears to hear. Indeed, it is not the eyes that go blind but hearts within chests do.
47And they ask you to hasten the punishment. Yet, Allah will never forsake His
promise. And surely, a day with your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is like a thousand years for you.
6. 6
48And so for those many cities people of which did wrong/acted against their
own good by associating others with Allah; I gave them a respite then seized them.
Only to Me is the final destination.
49,50Say: “O people! I am but a warner who makes it clear/explains for you.
And those who believe and do good deeds; forgiveness and a great blessing will be
for them”.
51And those who struggle against Our Ayat to make them fail; they are the
Companions of Jahannah [Hell].
(103/22; Al-Hajj/42-51)
Division: 633
52-54And never did We send a messenger or a prophet before you that when
they desire something Satan threw something into his desire. Then, Allah removes
that which Satan/Iblis throws. Then Allah,
reinforces and protects His Ayat so He may remove that which Satan has left
from the religion for those ill-hearted; ill-minded and stone-hearted, -surely, those
who do wrong; act against their own good are in a distant conflict-,
so those who have been given the knowledge may know with certainty that the
Qur’an is the Truth from their Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] and their hearts may respect it. And Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best
Law-Maker, the Strengthener. And surely, Allah is the One Who guides the believers
to a straight path.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/52-54)
Division: 634
55And those who blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the
fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] shall keep
doubting the Qur’an until the moment of Qiyamat [Resurrection] or the wrath of a
barren [unavailing, infertile] day will come to them.
56On that day, dominion will belong to Allah. He will judge among them. and
those who believe and do good deeds shall be in the gardens of Jannah
[Heaven/Paradise].
57And those who blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the
fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] and deny
Our Ayat; for them will be a humiliating punishment.
7. 7
58,59And those who emigrated in the path of Allah and then were killed or died;
surely, Allah will reward them with a beautiful gift. And surely, Allah is the Best of
the providers. He surely will admit them into a place where they will be pleased. And
surely, Allah is the Most Knowing, the Indulgent.
60Thus it is! And whoever reacts the punishment in the same manner and then
is treated unjustly, Allah will surely help them. surely, Allah is the Most Forgiving,
the Most Merciful.
61This is because Allah merges the night into the day and He merges the day
into the night. Surely, Allah is the Most Hearing, the Most Seeing.
62This is because Allah is the Truth and those subordinates of Him whom they
associate with Him are but superstition and surely, Allah is the Sublime, the Most
Exalted.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/55-62)
Division: 635
63Have you not seen/thought that indeed Allah brings down the rains from the
Heavens and Earth becomes green? Surely, Allah is the Most Generous, the Most
Acquainted.
64All that is in the Heavens and on the Earth belong only to Allah. And surely,
Allah is free of needs, the Praiseworthy.
65Have you not seen/thought that Allah made that which is on the Earth
prostrate before you [created them all so you may benefit them] and the ships that
float on the seas by His will? And He is the One Who keeps the Heavens from falling
without His will/knowledge. Surely, Allah is the Most Compassionate upon the
people, the Most Merciful.
66And He is the One Who gives you life and takes your lives and will resurrect
you. Surely, man is ungrateful.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/63-66)
Division: 636
67We have appointed a way of servitude for every community with a leader.
Let them perform their rituals accordingly. Then, let them never argue with you
about this matter. And invite to your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]. Surely, you are upon a straight guidance.
8. 8
68,69And if they argue with you, immediately say: “Allah is the Most Knowing
of what you do. Allah will judge among you about that which you conflict among
yourselves”.
70Do you not know that Allah surely knows all that is in the Heavens and on
the Earth? Surely, this is recorded in a Scripture. Surely, it is easy for Allah.
71And they worship the subordinates of Allah about whom Allah has never sent
down evidence and they have no knowledge whatsoever. And there will be no
helpers for those who do wrong; act against their own good by associating others
with Allah.
72And when Our Ayat are recited clearly to them, you can recognize that which
is considered evil by Wahy [Revelation] and common sense in the faces of those who
blaspheme; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is
Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. They almost attack those
who recite Our Ayat to them. Say: “Then, should I give you the tidings about that
which is worse than that? The Fire! Allah has promised to the infidels; those who
consciously deny His Divinity and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher,
the Nurturer, the Sustainer] the Fire. How an evil destination it is!”
(103/22; Al-Hajj/67/72)
Division: 637
73O people! You are being given an example so heed: Should the subordinates
of Allah whom you invoke convene together, they could not create a house fly. And
should the fly steal from them, they cannot save it. Weak are the demanded and the
demander.
74They have failed to assess Allah as they should. Surely, Allah is the
Almighty, the Most Exalted.
75,76Allah chooses messengers from among the harbinger Ayat and from among
the mankind. Surely, Allah is the Most Hearing, the Most Seeing, He knows that
which is between their hands and behind them. and to Allah will all matters be
returned.
(103/22; Al-Hajj/73-76)
Division: 638
77,78O you who have believed! Acknowledge the oneness of Allah, prostrate
and surrender, worship your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer], do good deeds and make your best efforts for the cause of Allah so you
9. 9
may win the victory, maintain your status. He has chosen you and cast upon you any
difficulty in the religion; the religion/lifestyle of your ancestor, Abraham. He did and
has in the Qur’an named you “Muslims” so the Messenger may be a witness over
you and you may be a witness over the people. Therefore, perform Salat [Support
financially and spiritually; establish and maintain institutions that enlighten the
community], give zaqat/tax and cling onto Allah. He is your protector; guide, helper,
protector. How a beautiful protector and helper He is!
(103/22; Al-Hajj/77-78)
395 The literal meaning of the Ayah is as follows; “Whoever have thought that Allah
would not help him in the world and in Akhirat [Afterlife], should extend a reason into the sky, then
… cut it. Then he should observe if his plan would remove that which enrages him [that which
preoccupies him]!”. When the Ayat of the Qur’an are considered, it can be seen that turning to the sky
means “to expect the mercy of Allah and Allah rains good from the Heavens”. For detailed review
thereof, see Tabyeen al-Qur’an.
396 Due to technical and semantic reasons, we rearranged this passage differently than the
Official Mushaf. For detailed information, see Tabyeen al-Qur’an.
