SURAH AN-NAHL (THE BEE)
MECCAN PERIOD
Division: 299
1The command of Allah will certainly come. So do not hasten to see it.
Exonerated and exalted is Allah than that which they associate with Him.
2Allah sends down harbinger Ayat/revelations to any of His servants as His
own affair with a soul/spirit, saying: “Surely, there is no god but Me, then warn them
to surrender themselves under My guardianship”.
3Allah created the Heavens and the Earth with the Truth. Exalted is He than
that which they associate with Him.
4Allah created man from a drop of semen. Then he became a clear enemy.
5He created the beasts. They have things to warm you and there are many
benefits in them for you. And you eat some of them as well.
6And in those beasts is a beauty for you when you bring them in the evening
and release them in the morning.
7And the beasts will carry your loads to lands where you can only arrive by
exhausting your soul/making great efforts. Surely, the Most Kind and the Most
Merciful is your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].
8And Allah created horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride them and take
them as your assets. He also created that which you do not ride.
9The righteous path is the only one that leads to Allah. And there are diverted
paths as well. Had Allah wished so, He would have guided you all into the righteous
path.
10,11He sent down for you water from the Heavens. Your drinks are from it.
And greens and grass which your beasts feed on are from it as well. With the water,
Allah grows crops, olives, dates, grapes and all kinds of fruits for you. Surely, there
certainly are evidence/signs in this for a people who contemplate.
12And Allah furnished the night and the day and the sun and the moon for your
service/He created them so you may benefit from them. All the stars prostate before
Him. Surely, there are evidence/signs therein for a people who use their reason.
2
13He also furnished things He created in different colors for your service.
Surely, there are evidence/signs therein for a people who take the admonition.
14And He is the One Who furnished the seas for your service so you may eat
fresh meat from the seas and retrieve the jewelry with which you adorn yourselves;
seek for sustenance from His blessings and be grateful for what you are given. –You
see ships plowing through the seas.-
15,16And Allah set into the Earth mountains standing firm and rivers as your
tables and paths and many other evidence for you to find the righteous path you are
guided. And they find their path with stars/the Ayat of the Qur’an.
17Then can the Creator/Allah be same as the so-called gods? Will you still not
think?
18And if you were to count the blessings of Allah you simply could not. Surely,
Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who does not punish
and the Most Forgiving, the Possessor of a Vast Mercy.
19And Allah knows that which you hide and that which you disclose.
(70/16; An-Nahl/1-19)
Division: 300
20,21And those whom they worship from among the subordinates of Allah
cannot create anything, yet they were created themselves, they are dead not alive.
And they do not know for sure when they shall be resurrected.
22And your God is the One God. And as for those who do not believe in
Akhirat [Afterlife]; their hearts try to prevent them from knowing and they are
arrogant people.
23There is no doubt about that Allah knows what they hide and also disclose.
Surely, Allah does not like arrogant people.
24,25And when they are told: “What has your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer] sent down?”, to assume their sins full on the Day of Qiyamat
[Resurrection] and also to assume a portion of the sins of those who they avert from
the righteous path due to their ignorance, they say: “This is nothing but legend of the
ancients”. Be careful, evil is their burden!
26Surely, those before them set traps and Allah hit and destroyed their walls
from their foundations. Then their roofs collapsed upon them. And the punishment
seized them from the direction they expected the least.
3
27Then, on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection], Allah will disgrace them and
say: “Where are My partners in the name of whom you sustained animosity?”. Those
who are informed will say: “Surely, upon the infidels; those who consciously deny
the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer,
the Sustainer] are disgrace and evil”.
(70/16; An-Nahl/20-27)
Division: 301
28Those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is
Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], as those who acted unjustly
to themselves, are the ones to whom angels remind their deeds they did in the past
and they failed to do even though they were obliged to. They shall surrender now:
“We did not do any evil deed”. Quite contrary, Allah knows best what you have been
doing.
“29Then proceed through the gates of Jahannah [Hell] to abide eternally!” they
shall be said. O how evil is the place of those who used to act arrogantly!
30-32And when those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of Allah
are asked: “What has your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]
sent down?”, they shall answer: “That which is good”. Good is for those who do
good deeds on this world. Yet the home of Akhirat [Afterlife] is certainly better. And
how beautiful is the home of those who surrender themselves under the guardianship
of Allah; the Gardens of Eden! They shall enter there. Rivers flow beneath it. That
which they desire will be there for them. Thus reward will Allah those who surrender
under His guardianship. Those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of
Allah are the ones whom angels will comfort and remind all the deeds they did in the
past and what they failed to do while being obliged to. And they shall say: “Peace be
upon you! Now proceed through the gates of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] as the
recompense of the deeds you have done!”.
(70/16; An-Nahl/28-32)
Division: 302
33,34Do they expect anything other than they would be visited by angels and
revelation of the command of their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]? Those before them did the same thing. And Allah did not treat them
unjustly yet they acted unjustly to themselves by associating other with Him; they
did wrong; acted against their own good. Therefore, they were punished for their
wrong deeds. That which they had been ridiculing seized them.
4
35And those who associate others with Allah said: “Had Allah wished so,
neither we nor our ancestors would have worshipped the subordinates of Him nor
forbidden anything but Him”. Those before them did the same thing. Then is there
upon the messengers anything other than conveying a clear message?
36And surely, We sent to every community a messenger to warn them,
“Worship Allah and avoid transgression [Taghut]292”. Then Allah guided some of
those communities to the righteous path yet for some of them, the perversion was
made the truth. Then observe how the end of those who denied was!
37Even though you make your best efforts to guide them to the righteous path,
Allah will never guide those whom He has led astray again to the righteous path.
There will be no helpers for them.
38,39And the infidels have sworn with their deepest oaths, saying: “Allah will
not resurrect the dead”. No, Allah will resurrect the dead as a real commitment He
assumed to disclose that upon which they conflict and to show those who cover up
the truth that they are the liars.
40When We intend to do something, all We have to do is to say, “Be!”.
Immediately it will.
(70/16; An-Nahl/33-40)
Division: 303
41,42And those who emigrated for the cause of Allah after they were treated
unjustly; We surely place those who had patience and relied unto Allah for their
affairs in this world in a good place. Price of the other/Akhirat [Afterlife] is much
higher. If only they knew!
43,44And We sent before you the mature people only to whom We revealed the
truth as messengers with manifest evidence and written scriptures. If you do not
know, ask those who have the knowledge about the Torah and the Bible. We have
revealed to you the admonition/the Qur’an to disclose that which you have been
revealed and for them to contemplate about it.
45-47As for those who plot evil deeds in secrecy; Are they absolutely sure that
Allah would not destroy them or a punishment would not seize them from a direction
they would expect least or Allah would not seize them while they wander, -and they
are not capable of making Him fail- or He would not seize them when they are
alone/in fear? Then, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is
the Most Caring, the Most Merciful.
5
48Have they not seen/thought about those creations of Allah which turn from
right to left shrinking while shadows of which prostrate to Allah?
49,50And all the creatures and the forces of the nature that are in the Heavens
and on the Earth prostrate to Allah without arrogance. They fear their Rabb [Lord,
the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] above them and do as they are
commanded.
(70/16; An-Naml/41-50)
Division: 304
51Thus commanded Allah: “Do not adopt two gods. He is the Only God. Then
fear/worship Me only”.
52Only to Him belong that which are in the Heavens and on the Earth. And the
religion belongs Him. Do you seek refuge in anyone other than Allah despite all
these?
53And whatever you have as good is from Allah. And when trouble touches
you, you immediately invoke Him only.
54,55And when He removes the trouble from upon you, some of you associate
others with their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] to utter
blasphemies; cover up/be ungrateful for Our blessings. –Now enjoy! But you will
know soon.-
56And those who associate others with Allah allocate Our blessings for that
which they do not know. –By Allah, you will surely be questioned for that which you
fabricate.-
57And they attribute to Allah daughters. –Exonerated is Allah from that- And
they desire for young boys.
58And when one of them is given the good tidings of a daughter, his face
becomes dark with anger.
59He hides from the community because of the evil nature of the good tiding he
has been given; Should he keep his daughter despite being humiliated and scorned or
should he bury her alive? Be careful! How evil is their judgment/tradition!
6
62And they reserve for Allah that which they do not desire. And their mouths
continuously say in vain that the best belongs to them. Surely, only the Fire will be
for them and they shall be thrown into it first.
60Those who do not believe Akhirat [Afterlife] will be the evil in the same
fashion. For Allah will be the most exalted example. He is the Most Exalted, the
Almighty, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Best Law-Maker, the
One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible.
61Had Allah intended to trial and punish people for their wrong deeds, He
would have left no creature, small or large, on the Earth. Yet He postpones His
punishment for a predetermined time. And when their time is up, it will not be
postponed nor advanced, even not for an hour.
63By Allah, We indeed sent messengers to certain people before you as Satan
had made their evil deeds seem alluring to them. And on that day, Satan will be their
helper, guide and protector. And a painful punishment will be for them.
64And We have revealed the Qur’an to you so you disclose that upon which
they have conflicted and as a guide, a mercy for a people who will believe.
(70/16; An-Nahl/51-59, 62, 60-61, 63-64)
Division: 305
65And Allah brought down water from the Heavens and revived the Earth when
it had become barren. Surely, there is evidence/a sign for a people who heed.
66Surely, there is a lesson for you in the goats, sheep, camels and cattle. We
provide you the milk through the excrement and blood within their bellies, which is
easy to swallow for those who drink it.
67And We make you drink from the fruits of date palms and from grapes –and
you get drinks and a good sustenance from them-. Surely, there is evidence/a sign in
this for a people who reason.
68,69And your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] revealed
to the honey bees to make homes on the mountains, trees and in the roofs men make,
saying ‘Eat all kinds of fruits and follow the paths your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher,
the Nurturer, the Sustainer] has made easier. From their bellies emerge a drink of
various colors which is a healing for the people. Surely, there is evidence/a sign in
this for a people who contemplate.
70And Allah created you and He is the One Who will take your lives293; He will
remind you all that which you did in the past and that which you failed to do while
7
being obliged to. Some of you are made to their oldest ages so they may not know
anything after the knowledge. Surely, Allah is the Most Knowing and the Most
Powerful.
71And Allah favored some of you above others in terms of blessings. Those
who are favored over others do not distribute their blessings; their foods and drinks,
wealth to those whom they dominate under their covenants294 equally. Then do they
consciously cover up the blessings of Allah?
72And Allah created your wives from your own selves and bestowed upon you
sons and grandsons with those wives. He bestowed upon you what is good, nice and
beneficial. Yet they believe in that which is superstitious and cover up the blessings
of Allah?
73And they worship those subordinates of Allah who do not possess the power
to provide you any blessings and are not capable of doing anything.
74Then do not invent similarities with Allah. Surely, Allah knows but you do
not.
75Allah gives an example of a slave, who is the possession of another one and
is not capable of doing anything, and a man upon whom We have bestowed blessings
and who spends these blessings for the cause of Allah/provides sustenance for his
relatives, in secrecy and openly: Can they be equal? –All praise be upon Allah; no
one else may be praised.- Quite contrary, most of the people do not know.
76Allah gives the example of two men: One of them is mute, he has no power at
all; he is burden to his protector. Wherever he sends him, he cannot avail him. Then,
can this man and the one who commands with justice and follows the righteous path
be equal?
(70/16; An-Nahl/65-76)
Division: 306
77And the unseen, the unheard, the past and the future of the Heavens and the
Earth belong only to Allah. And the moment of Qiyamat [Resurrection] will be fast
as the blink of an eye or it is closer than that. Surely Allah is capable of doing
everything.
78And Allah made you emerge from the wombs of your mothers, having no
knowledge whatsoever and gave you hearing, sight and heart so you may be grateful
for the blessings you are given.
8
79Have they not observed/looked at the birds/clouds which are made prostrate
in the void of the Heavens to a command? No one but Allah holds them. There are
indeed evidences/signs in this or a people who believe.
80And Allah made your homes a place of peace and relaxing for you. And
made you use the hide of the beasts to cover your homes and make tents during your
travels and use their wool, furs and hair to make furniture to enjoy for a while.
81And Allah made shadows from their creations and shelters for you from
mountains. He made you clothing that protects you from cold and heat and armors to
save you from your own wrath. Thus provides Allah upon you his blessings so you
can be Muslims.
82And if they turn away despite all these, all you have to do is to convey a clear
message.
83They recognize the blessings of Allah yet they disbelieve Him. Most of them
are infidels; they are the ones who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the
fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].
(70/16; An-Nahl/77-83)
Division: 307
84And on the day when We will bring a witness from every community, the
infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is
Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] will not be allowed. And they
shall not be asked to repent.
85And when those who do wrong; act against their own good by associating
others with Allah see the punishment, it will not be eased upon them nor they shall
not be given a respite.
86And when those who associate others with Allah see that which they have
been associating, they shall say: “O our Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]! These are our partners from among Your subordinates whom we used to
worship”. And their partners whom they used to associate with Allah will
immediately answer them, saying: “Surely, you are liars”.
87And on that day they shall surrender to Allah. And that which they fabricated
will abandon them and vanish.
88The blasphemers; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the
fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]; We will
punish them increasingly for they made mischief.
9
89And on that day, We will send a witness from among every community to
testify against them. And We will assign you as a witness over them. And We have
revealed to you this Scripture as an explanation on all things, a guide and a mercy for
all Muslims and the harbinger of good tidings.
(70/16; An-Nahl/84-89)
Division: 308
90Surely, Allah commands justice, doing good deeds and supporting relatives;
And He forbids recklessness, evil deeds and transgression. He gives you admonitions
so you may heed and take lessons.
91And when you make a covenant, fulfill the covenant of Allah/the promises
you have given to Allah. And after you ensure that your oaths/covenants are fulfilled
and adopt Allah as your witness thereof, do not break your oaths/covenants. Surely,
Allah knows the deeds you do.
92Be not like the woman who untwisted her thread after it was made strong295,
utilizing your oaths as tools of deception just because a community is wealthier than
another community. Surely, Allah tests you with this. On the Day of Qiyamat
[Resurrection], He will disclose that upon which you conflict.
93Had Allah wished so, He surely would have made you a single community.
Yet Allah leads astray whomever He wishes/whoever wishes so and He guides to the
righteous path whomever He wishes/whoever wishes so. And surely, you shall be
questioned/held responsible for all that which you do.
94And do not use your oaths as tools to make mischief/cause chaos among
yourselves. Then your feet slip while standing tight and you taste the evil for you
have gone astray from the path of Allah. And the great punishment will be yours.
95And do not sell the covenants of Allah/promises you give to Allah for an
unfair price. And you should better know that which is with Allah is better for you.
96What you have will surely deplete yet that which is with Allah is everlasting.
And We surely will give those who are patient their reward, much better than what
they do.
97And whoever does good deeds, whether female or male, We will make
her/him live a good life. And We surely will recompense them with much better than
what they do.
10
98Then when you learn and teach the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan
the Cursed [the one whom you remember immediately, that which is not reached by
contemplating, the power that invents unfounded ideas that would devastate you].
99,100Surely, Satan the Cursed has no authority over those who believe and rely
unto their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] for their affairs. His
authority applies only to those who adopt him as their helper, guide, guardian and
also those who associate others with Allah.
(70/16; An-Nahl/90-100)
Division: 309
101And when We fulfilled an Ayah in place of another Ayah –despite Allah
being the Most Knowing of that which He has revealed- they said: “You are nothing
but a liar”. Truly, most of them do not know.
102Say: “Allah revealed it in proper and unchangeable way; what He revealed,
as a Ruhu-l-kudus (the most immaculate soul) from his Rabb[Lord, the Cherisher,
the Nurturer, the Sustainer], Allah’s principle revitalizing the society, good tidings
and a guide for the Muslims to make those who believe stronger, firmer in/cling to
faith.”
103And We surely know that they say: “He is taught only by a human”.
Language of the one whom they assume to teach the Prophet is foreign, yet the
language of the Qur’an is clearly Arabic.
104Surely, those who do not believe in the Ayat of Allah; Allah will not guide
them to the righteous path and a severe punishment will be for them.
105Only those who do not believe in the Ayat of Allah fabricate lies. And they
are the liars.
106Whoever utters blasphemies after believing; denies the Divinity of Allah and
the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], -while his
heart is soothed with faith and without being forced by others to do so- and opens his
heart to blasphemy; those who do not believe; then wrath of Allah will be upon them.
A severe punishment will be for them.
107This is because they prefer worldly life over Akhirat [Afterlife] and that
Allah surely does not guide to the righteous path the people of infidels; those who
consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].
11
108They are the ones whose hearts, ears and eyes are sealed by Allah. They are
the ones who are apathetic, careless and ignorant.
109Surely, in Akhirat [Afterlife], they shall be among the losers.
(70/16; An-Nahl/101-109)
Division: 310
110Your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is surely for
those who emigrated after being tortured then make their best and have patience.
Surely, from now on, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is
the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
111On that day, everyone will come struggling for his own soul and all will be
recompensed fully for what they have done. They shall not be treated unjustly.
(70/16; An-Nahl/110-111)
Division: 311
112And Allah gives a city296 as an example: That city was safe and peaceful and
was blessed with abundant sustenance. Yet they were ungrateful for the blessings of
Allah. And Allah made them taste starvation and fear/devastation for what they did
and produced.
113And surely, a messenger came to them from among themselves yet they
denied him. Thereafter, punishment seized them while they were doing wrong; acting
against their own good by associating others with Allah.
(70/16; An-Nahl/112-113)
Division: 312
114Then eat the pure and halal food which is given to you by Allah as blessings.
And be grateful to Allah for this; if you are to worship only Him.
115Allah has forbidden to you carcasses, blood, pork and anything that is
sacrificed in the name of others than Allah. And whoever is forced to eat these
unintentionally and without transgressing they should know that Allah is the Most
Forgiving of the sins of His servants, and He does not punish them and He is the
Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.
12
116And do not say, “This is halal [allowed] and this is haram [forbidden] to lie
against Allah with the untruth your tongues utter. Surely, those who lie against Allah
will never be prosper.
117Their earning in this world is less. And for them will be a painful
punishment.
118We also forbade to the Jews that which We have forbidden to you
[carcasses, blood, pork]. And We never treated them unjustly. Yet they treated
themselves unjustly by associating others with Allah.
(70/16; An-Nahl/114-118)
Division: 313
119Then your Rabb surely is for those who have sinned due to their ignorance
yet repented and corrected themselves. Surely, from now on, your Rabb [Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.
120,121Surely, Abraham was a community by himself who prostrated to Allah,
forsook the faith of associating others with Allah and was grateful for the blessings
of Allah. And he was not among those who associated others with Allah. And Allah
chose him and guided him to the straight, righteous path.
122And We bestowed upon Abraham good in this world. And surely, he will be
among the righteous in Akhirat [Afterlife].
123Then We have revealed to you: “Follow the religion/lifestyle of Abraham
who forsook blasphemy; forsook associating others with Allah and was not among
those who associated”.
(70/16; An-Nahl/119-123)
Division: 314
124The Sabbath; the Day of contemplating,297 was prescribed only upon those
who conflicted about the Sabbath/the Day of contemplating. And surely, on the Day
of Qiyamat [Resurrection] your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] will judge among them about that which they conflicted.
(70/16; An-Nahl/124)
Division: 315
13
125Invite to the path of your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer], invite with the laws, rules and principles that are prescribed to preclude
injustice, mischief-making and chaos and a good admonition! And struggle against
them in the best way. Surely, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] knows best those who have gone astray from His path and He also knows
best those who follow the righteous path they are guided.
(70/16; An-Nahl/125)
Division: 316
126And if you are to punish anyone, punish him as much as you have been
punished. And if you are to be patient, it surely is better for those who have patience.
127Have patience! Your patience is only by Allah. Do not be saddened for
them! Do not trouble yourself with their plots!
128Surely, Allah is with those who have surrendered themselves under the
guardianship of Him and those who are the ones who do good deeds.
(70/16; An-Nahl/126-128)
292 See Footnote No. 246.
293 See Footnote No. 71.
294 Allah favors some of His servants over others in terms of wealth, children, lifetime
and intelligence. Those who are favored in wealth do not pay their subordinates, employees, officers,
workers equally; they pay them differently due to certain reasons. They consider none of them are
equal with them and do not share with them. Our Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] gives this message: Even you do not accept your employees [slaves, workers, officers] as
partners [equal] to yourselves; and acknowledge the difference between the master and the slave, the
employee and the employer, then how come you do not accept there may be difference between Allah
and His creations? Why should Allah accept His servants as partners [equal] to Himself? The reason
for Allah to bestow His blessings more upon some of His servants thus favoring some of themabove
others is to maintain the social order: The relation between subordinates and seniors is a divine law
that is imposed on the social life and enables people to socially interact among themselves thus
allowing them to be tested with their manners and attitudes in establishing their relations. Raising in
various degrees, as mentioned herein, is not a difference in terms of prophecy, superiority, prestige,
but in economical power, wisdom, intelligence, understanding, knowledge-ignorance. In a community
where all of the members are equal in terms of economical power, intelligence and understanding,
employment and production, which in turn requires some people to employ other, cannot be possible;
and in an environment where employment and production is absent, the life literally stops. For
detailed information see Official Mushaf: Az-Zukhruf/32 (Division: 258), Ar-Rum/28 (Division: 379).
295 Those who break their covenants as mentioned in the Ayah, are likened to a women
who untwists her thread after having made it strong. A woman who untwists her thread which she has
14
made is an allegory used to characterize those who break their covenants. Although this allegory ,
which is made according to Arabic tradition, is stated in certain interpretations to represent a woman,
it is obvious that the person who is characterized in the Ayah represents all those who break their
covenants, female or male.
296 The city mentioned herein must be the city of Sheba which is mentioned in 58/34,
Sheba/5-21 (Division: 223).
297 The Sabbath, which is colloquially known as “Saturday” is the day when the people
interrupt their daily [worldly] affairs and heed to and contemplate on the words of God thus resting
their souls and bodies.

070 surah an-nahl (the bee)

  • 1. 1 SURAH AN-NAHL (THE BEE) MECCAN PERIOD Division: 299 1The command of Allah will certainly come. So do not hasten to see it. Exonerated and exalted is Allah than that which they associate with Him. 2Allah sends down harbinger Ayat/revelations to any of His servants as His own affair with a soul/spirit, saying: “Surely, there is no god but Me, then warn them to surrender themselves under My guardianship”. 3Allah created the Heavens and the Earth with the Truth. Exalted is He than that which they associate with Him. 4Allah created man from a drop of semen. Then he became a clear enemy. 5He created the beasts. They have things to warm you and there are many benefits in them for you. And you eat some of them as well. 6And in those beasts is a beauty for you when you bring them in the evening and release them in the morning. 7And the beasts will carry your loads to lands where you can only arrive by exhausting your soul/making great efforts. Surely, the Most Kind and the Most Merciful is your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. 8And Allah created horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride them and take them as your assets. He also created that which you do not ride. 9The righteous path is the only one that leads to Allah. And there are diverted paths as well. Had Allah wished so, He would have guided you all into the righteous path. 10,11He sent down for you water from the Heavens. Your drinks are from it. And greens and grass which your beasts feed on are from it as well. With the water, Allah grows crops, olives, dates, grapes and all kinds of fruits for you. Surely, there certainly are evidence/signs in this for a people who contemplate. 12And Allah furnished the night and the day and the sun and the moon for your service/He created them so you may benefit from them. All the stars prostate before Him. Surely, there are evidence/signs therein for a people who use their reason.
  • 2. 2 13He also furnished things He created in different colors for your service. Surely, there are evidence/signs therein for a people who take the admonition. 14And He is the One Who furnished the seas for your service so you may eat fresh meat from the seas and retrieve the jewelry with which you adorn yourselves; seek for sustenance from His blessings and be grateful for what you are given. –You see ships plowing through the seas.- 15,16And Allah set into the Earth mountains standing firm and rivers as your tables and paths and many other evidence for you to find the righteous path you are guided. And they find their path with stars/the Ayat of the Qur’an. 17Then can the Creator/Allah be same as the so-called gods? Will you still not think? 18And if you were to count the blessings of Allah you simply could not. Surely, Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who does not punish and the Most Forgiving, the Possessor of a Vast Mercy. 19And Allah knows that which you hide and that which you disclose. (70/16; An-Nahl/1-19) Division: 300 20,21And those whom they worship from among the subordinates of Allah cannot create anything, yet they were created themselves, they are dead not alive. And they do not know for sure when they shall be resurrected. 22And your God is the One God. And as for those who do not believe in Akhirat [Afterlife]; their hearts try to prevent them from knowing and they are arrogant people. 23There is no doubt about that Allah knows what they hide and also disclose. Surely, Allah does not like arrogant people. 24,25And when they are told: “What has your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] sent down?”, to assume their sins full on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection] and also to assume a portion of the sins of those who they avert from the righteous path due to their ignorance, they say: “This is nothing but legend of the ancients”. Be careful, evil is their burden! 26Surely, those before them set traps and Allah hit and destroyed their walls from their foundations. Then their roofs collapsed upon them. And the punishment seized them from the direction they expected the least.
  • 3. 3 27Then, on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection], Allah will disgrace them and say: “Where are My partners in the name of whom you sustained animosity?”. Those who are informed will say: “Surely, upon the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] are disgrace and evil”. (70/16; An-Nahl/20-27) Division: 301 28Those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], as those who acted unjustly to themselves, are the ones to whom angels remind their deeds they did in the past and they failed to do even though they were obliged to. They shall surrender now: “We did not do any evil deed”. Quite contrary, Allah knows best what you have been doing. “29Then proceed through the gates of Jahannah [Hell] to abide eternally!” they shall be said. O how evil is the place of those who used to act arrogantly! 30-32And when those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of Allah are asked: “What has your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] sent down?”, they shall answer: “That which is good”. Good is for those who do good deeds on this world. Yet the home of Akhirat [Afterlife] is certainly better. And how beautiful is the home of those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of Allah; the Gardens of Eden! They shall enter there. Rivers flow beneath it. That which they desire will be there for them. Thus reward will Allah those who surrender under His guardianship. Those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of Allah are the ones whom angels will comfort and remind all the deeds they did in the past and what they failed to do while being obliged to. And they shall say: “Peace be upon you! Now proceed through the gates of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] as the recompense of the deeds you have done!”. (70/16; An-Nahl/28-32) Division: 302 33,34Do they expect anything other than they would be visited by angels and revelation of the command of their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]? Those before them did the same thing. And Allah did not treat them unjustly yet they acted unjustly to themselves by associating other with Him; they did wrong; acted against their own good. Therefore, they were punished for their wrong deeds. That which they had been ridiculing seized them.
  • 4. 4 35And those who associate others with Allah said: “Had Allah wished so, neither we nor our ancestors would have worshipped the subordinates of Him nor forbidden anything but Him”. Those before them did the same thing. Then is there upon the messengers anything other than conveying a clear message? 36And surely, We sent to every community a messenger to warn them, “Worship Allah and avoid transgression [Taghut]292”. Then Allah guided some of those communities to the righteous path yet for some of them, the perversion was made the truth. Then observe how the end of those who denied was! 37Even though you make your best efforts to guide them to the righteous path, Allah will never guide those whom He has led astray again to the righteous path. There will be no helpers for them. 38,39And the infidels have sworn with their deepest oaths, saying: “Allah will not resurrect the dead”. No, Allah will resurrect the dead as a real commitment He assumed to disclose that upon which they conflict and to show those who cover up the truth that they are the liars. 40When We intend to do something, all We have to do is to say, “Be!”. Immediately it will. (70/16; An-Nahl/33-40) Division: 303 41,42And those who emigrated for the cause of Allah after they were treated unjustly; We surely place those who had patience and relied unto Allah for their affairs in this world in a good place. Price of the other/Akhirat [Afterlife] is much higher. If only they knew! 43,44And We sent before you the mature people only to whom We revealed the truth as messengers with manifest evidence and written scriptures. If you do not know, ask those who have the knowledge about the Torah and the Bible. We have revealed to you the admonition/the Qur’an to disclose that which you have been revealed and for them to contemplate about it. 45-47As for those who plot evil deeds in secrecy; Are they absolutely sure that Allah would not destroy them or a punishment would not seize them from a direction they would expect least or Allah would not seize them while they wander, -and they are not capable of making Him fail- or He would not seize them when they are alone/in fear? Then, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the Most Caring, the Most Merciful.
  • 5. 5 48Have they not seen/thought about those creations of Allah which turn from right to left shrinking while shadows of which prostrate to Allah? 49,50And all the creatures and the forces of the nature that are in the Heavens and on the Earth prostrate to Allah without arrogance. They fear their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] above them and do as they are commanded. (70/16; An-Naml/41-50) Division: 304 51Thus commanded Allah: “Do not adopt two gods. He is the Only God. Then fear/worship Me only”. 52Only to Him belong that which are in the Heavens and on the Earth. And the religion belongs Him. Do you seek refuge in anyone other than Allah despite all these? 53And whatever you have as good is from Allah. And when trouble touches you, you immediately invoke Him only. 54,55And when He removes the trouble from upon you, some of you associate others with their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] to utter blasphemies; cover up/be ungrateful for Our blessings. –Now enjoy! But you will know soon.- 56And those who associate others with Allah allocate Our blessings for that which they do not know. –By Allah, you will surely be questioned for that which you fabricate.- 57And they attribute to Allah daughters. –Exonerated is Allah from that- And they desire for young boys. 58And when one of them is given the good tidings of a daughter, his face becomes dark with anger. 59He hides from the community because of the evil nature of the good tiding he has been given; Should he keep his daughter despite being humiliated and scorned or should he bury her alive? Be careful! How evil is their judgment/tradition!
  • 6. 6 62And they reserve for Allah that which they do not desire. And their mouths continuously say in vain that the best belongs to them. Surely, only the Fire will be for them and they shall be thrown into it first. 60Those who do not believe Akhirat [Afterlife] will be the evil in the same fashion. For Allah will be the most exalted example. He is the Most Exalted, the Almighty, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Best Law-Maker, the One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible. 61Had Allah intended to trial and punish people for their wrong deeds, He would have left no creature, small or large, on the Earth. Yet He postpones His punishment for a predetermined time. And when their time is up, it will not be postponed nor advanced, even not for an hour. 63By Allah, We indeed sent messengers to certain people before you as Satan had made their evil deeds seem alluring to them. And on that day, Satan will be their helper, guide and protector. And a painful punishment will be for them. 64And We have revealed the Qur’an to you so you disclose that upon which they have conflicted and as a guide, a mercy for a people who will believe. (70/16; An-Nahl/51-59, 62, 60-61, 63-64) Division: 305 65And Allah brought down water from the Heavens and revived the Earth when it had become barren. Surely, there is evidence/a sign for a people who heed. 66Surely, there is a lesson for you in the goats, sheep, camels and cattle. We provide you the milk through the excrement and blood within their bellies, which is easy to swallow for those who drink it. 67And We make you drink from the fruits of date palms and from grapes –and you get drinks and a good sustenance from them-. Surely, there is evidence/a sign in this for a people who reason. 68,69And your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] revealed to the honey bees to make homes on the mountains, trees and in the roofs men make, saying ‘Eat all kinds of fruits and follow the paths your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] has made easier. From their bellies emerge a drink of various colors which is a healing for the people. Surely, there is evidence/a sign in this for a people who contemplate. 70And Allah created you and He is the One Who will take your lives293; He will remind you all that which you did in the past and that which you failed to do while
  • 7. 7 being obliged to. Some of you are made to their oldest ages so they may not know anything after the knowledge. Surely, Allah is the Most Knowing and the Most Powerful. 71And Allah favored some of you above others in terms of blessings. Those who are favored over others do not distribute their blessings; their foods and drinks, wealth to those whom they dominate under their covenants294 equally. Then do they consciously cover up the blessings of Allah? 72And Allah created your wives from your own selves and bestowed upon you sons and grandsons with those wives. He bestowed upon you what is good, nice and beneficial. Yet they believe in that which is superstitious and cover up the blessings of Allah? 73And they worship those subordinates of Allah who do not possess the power to provide you any blessings and are not capable of doing anything. 74Then do not invent similarities with Allah. Surely, Allah knows but you do not. 75Allah gives an example of a slave, who is the possession of another one and is not capable of doing anything, and a man upon whom We have bestowed blessings and who spends these blessings for the cause of Allah/provides sustenance for his relatives, in secrecy and openly: Can they be equal? –All praise be upon Allah; no one else may be praised.- Quite contrary, most of the people do not know. 76Allah gives the example of two men: One of them is mute, he has no power at all; he is burden to his protector. Wherever he sends him, he cannot avail him. Then, can this man and the one who commands with justice and follows the righteous path be equal? (70/16; An-Nahl/65-76) Division: 306 77And the unseen, the unheard, the past and the future of the Heavens and the Earth belong only to Allah. And the moment of Qiyamat [Resurrection] will be fast as the blink of an eye or it is closer than that. Surely Allah is capable of doing everything. 78And Allah made you emerge from the wombs of your mothers, having no knowledge whatsoever and gave you hearing, sight and heart so you may be grateful for the blessings you are given.
  • 8. 8 79Have they not observed/looked at the birds/clouds which are made prostrate in the void of the Heavens to a command? No one but Allah holds them. There are indeed evidences/signs in this or a people who believe. 80And Allah made your homes a place of peace and relaxing for you. And made you use the hide of the beasts to cover your homes and make tents during your travels and use their wool, furs and hair to make furniture to enjoy for a while. 81And Allah made shadows from their creations and shelters for you from mountains. He made you clothing that protects you from cold and heat and armors to save you from your own wrath. Thus provides Allah upon you his blessings so you can be Muslims. 82And if they turn away despite all these, all you have to do is to convey a clear message. 83They recognize the blessings of Allah yet they disbelieve Him. Most of them are infidels; they are the ones who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. (70/16; An-Nahl/77-83) Division: 307 84And on the day when We will bring a witness from every community, the infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] will not be allowed. And they shall not be asked to repent. 85And when those who do wrong; act against their own good by associating others with Allah see the punishment, it will not be eased upon them nor they shall not be given a respite. 86And when those who associate others with Allah see that which they have been associating, they shall say: “O our Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]! These are our partners from among Your subordinates whom we used to worship”. And their partners whom they used to associate with Allah will immediately answer them, saying: “Surely, you are liars”. 87And on that day they shall surrender to Allah. And that which they fabricated will abandon them and vanish. 88The blasphemers; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]; We will punish them increasingly for they made mischief.
  • 9. 9 89And on that day, We will send a witness from among every community to testify against them. And We will assign you as a witness over them. And We have revealed to you this Scripture as an explanation on all things, a guide and a mercy for all Muslims and the harbinger of good tidings. (70/16; An-Nahl/84-89) Division: 308 90Surely, Allah commands justice, doing good deeds and supporting relatives; And He forbids recklessness, evil deeds and transgression. He gives you admonitions so you may heed and take lessons. 91And when you make a covenant, fulfill the covenant of Allah/the promises you have given to Allah. And after you ensure that your oaths/covenants are fulfilled and adopt Allah as your witness thereof, do not break your oaths/covenants. Surely, Allah knows the deeds you do. 92Be not like the woman who untwisted her thread after it was made strong295, utilizing your oaths as tools of deception just because a community is wealthier than another community. Surely, Allah tests you with this. On the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection], He will disclose that upon which you conflict. 93Had Allah wished so, He surely would have made you a single community. Yet Allah leads astray whomever He wishes/whoever wishes so and He guides to the righteous path whomever He wishes/whoever wishes so. And surely, you shall be questioned/held responsible for all that which you do. 94And do not use your oaths as tools to make mischief/cause chaos among yourselves. Then your feet slip while standing tight and you taste the evil for you have gone astray from the path of Allah. And the great punishment will be yours. 95And do not sell the covenants of Allah/promises you give to Allah for an unfair price. And you should better know that which is with Allah is better for you. 96What you have will surely deplete yet that which is with Allah is everlasting. And We surely will give those who are patient their reward, much better than what they do. 97And whoever does good deeds, whether female or male, We will make her/him live a good life. And We surely will recompense them with much better than what they do.
  • 10. 10 98Then when you learn and teach the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan the Cursed [the one whom you remember immediately, that which is not reached by contemplating, the power that invents unfounded ideas that would devastate you]. 99,100Surely, Satan the Cursed has no authority over those who believe and rely unto their Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] for their affairs. His authority applies only to those who adopt him as their helper, guide, guardian and also those who associate others with Allah. (70/16; An-Nahl/90-100) Division: 309 101And when We fulfilled an Ayah in place of another Ayah –despite Allah being the Most Knowing of that which He has revealed- they said: “You are nothing but a liar”. Truly, most of them do not know. 102Say: “Allah revealed it in proper and unchangeable way; what He revealed, as a Ruhu-l-kudus (the most immaculate soul) from his Rabb[Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], Allah’s principle revitalizing the society, good tidings and a guide for the Muslims to make those who believe stronger, firmer in/cling to faith.” 103And We surely know that they say: “He is taught only by a human”. Language of the one whom they assume to teach the Prophet is foreign, yet the language of the Qur’an is clearly Arabic. 104Surely, those who do not believe in the Ayat of Allah; Allah will not guide them to the righteous path and a severe punishment will be for them. 105Only those who do not believe in the Ayat of Allah fabricate lies. And they are the liars. 106Whoever utters blasphemies after believing; denies the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], -while his heart is soothed with faith and without being forced by others to do so- and opens his heart to blasphemy; those who do not believe; then wrath of Allah will be upon them. A severe punishment will be for them. 107This is because they prefer worldly life over Akhirat [Afterlife] and that Allah surely does not guide to the righteous path the people of infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer].
  • 11. 11 108They are the ones whose hearts, ears and eyes are sealed by Allah. They are the ones who are apathetic, careless and ignorant. 109Surely, in Akhirat [Afterlife], they shall be among the losers. (70/16; An-Nahl/101-109) Division: 310 110Your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is surely for those who emigrated after being tortured then make their best and have patience. Surely, from now on, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. 111On that day, everyone will come struggling for his own soul and all will be recompensed fully for what they have done. They shall not be treated unjustly. (70/16; An-Nahl/110-111) Division: 311 112And Allah gives a city296 as an example: That city was safe and peaceful and was blessed with abundant sustenance. Yet they were ungrateful for the blessings of Allah. And Allah made them taste starvation and fear/devastation for what they did and produced. 113And surely, a messenger came to them from among themselves yet they denied him. Thereafter, punishment seized them while they were doing wrong; acting against their own good by associating others with Allah. (70/16; An-Nahl/112-113) Division: 312 114Then eat the pure and halal food which is given to you by Allah as blessings. And be grateful to Allah for this; if you are to worship only Him. 115Allah has forbidden to you carcasses, blood, pork and anything that is sacrificed in the name of others than Allah. And whoever is forced to eat these unintentionally and without transgressing they should know that Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, and He does not punish them and He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.
  • 12. 12 116And do not say, “This is halal [allowed] and this is haram [forbidden] to lie against Allah with the untruth your tongues utter. Surely, those who lie against Allah will never be prosper. 117Their earning in this world is less. And for them will be a painful punishment. 118We also forbade to the Jews that which We have forbidden to you [carcasses, blood, pork]. And We never treated them unjustly. Yet they treated themselves unjustly by associating others with Allah. (70/16; An-Nahl/114-118) Division: 313 119Then your Rabb surely is for those who have sinned due to their ignorance yet repented and corrected themselves. Surely, from now on, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful. 120,121Surely, Abraham was a community by himself who prostrated to Allah, forsook the faith of associating others with Allah and was grateful for the blessings of Allah. And he was not among those who associated others with Allah. And Allah chose him and guided him to the straight, righteous path. 122And We bestowed upon Abraham good in this world. And surely, he will be among the righteous in Akhirat [Afterlife]. 123Then We have revealed to you: “Follow the religion/lifestyle of Abraham who forsook blasphemy; forsook associating others with Allah and was not among those who associated”. (70/16; An-Nahl/119-123) Division: 314 124The Sabbath; the Day of contemplating,297 was prescribed only upon those who conflicted about the Sabbath/the Day of contemplating. And surely, on the Day of Qiyamat [Resurrection] your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] will judge among them about that which they conflicted. And struggle against them in the best way. Surely, your Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] knows best those who have gone astray from His path and He also knows best those who follow the righteous path they are guided. (70/16; An-Nahl/125) Division: 316 126And if you are to punish anyone, punish him as much as you have been punished. And if you are to be patient, it surely is better for those who have patience. 127Have patience! Your patience is only by Allah. Do not be saddened for them! Do not trouble yourself with their plots! 128Surely, Allah is with those who have surrendered themselves under the guardianship of Him and those who are the ones who do good deeds. (70/16; An-Nahl/126-128) 292 See Footnote No. 246. 293 See Footnote No. 71. 294 Allah favors some of His servants over others in terms of wealth, children, lifetime and intelligence. Those who are favored in wealth do not pay their subordinates, employees, officers, workers equally; they pay them differently due to certain reasons. They consider none of them are equal with them and do not share with them. Our Rabb [Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] gives this message: Even you do not accept your employees [slaves, workers, officers] as partners [equal] to yourselves; and acknowledge the difference between the master and the slave, the employee and the employer, then how come you do not accept there may be difference between Allah and His creations? Why should Allah accept His servants as partners [equal] to Himself? The reason for Allah to bestow His blessings more upon some of His servants thus favoring some of themabove others is to maintain the social order: The relation between subordinates and seniors is a divine law that is imposed on the social life and enables people to socially interact among themselves thus allowing them to be tested with their manners and attitudes in establishing their relations. Raising in various degrees, as mentioned herein, is not a difference in terms of prophecy, superiority, prestige, but in economical power, wisdom, intelligence, understanding, knowledge-ignorance. In a community where all of the members are equal in terms of economical power, intelligence and understanding, employment and production, which in turn requires some people to employ other, cannot be possible; and in an environment where employment and production is absent, the life literally stops. Although this allegory , which is made according to Arabic tradition, is stated in certain interpretations to represent a woman, it is obvious that the person who is characterized in the Ayah represents all those who break their covenants, female or male. 296 The city mentioned herein must be the city of Sheba which is mentioned in 58/34, Sheba/5-21 (Division: 223). 297 The Sabbath, which is colloquially known as “Saturday” is the day when the people interrupt their daily [worldly] affairs and heed to and contemplate on the words of God thus resting their souls and bodies.
