Hello!
Welcome to
our class!
2
Focus: Supply other
words or expressions that
complete analogy
* What is analogy?
* How does it improve our
thinking skill?
An ANALOGY shows a relationship between words
It is a comparison between two things.
It describes or explains one thing by examining its
similarities with another thing.
3
It helps us learn new words and
develops our critical thinking by
determining the relationship
between words with related ideas.
In showing
relationship,
analogy uses
double colon to
split the pair of
words into two
parts.
4
Up : down :: hot : cold
(1st part ) ( 2nd part )
It reads as, UP is an opposite of DOWN, just as HOT is
an opposite of COLD.
Note: This two pair of words shows an ANTONYM
analogy relationship
There are a
number of
relationships
that can be
shown through
analogies
minute : hour :: ounce : pound
Relationship: part to whole
"An hour is comprised of minutes,
just like a pound is comprised of
ounces."
Fork : eat :: shovel : dig
Relationship: object to function
"You use a fork to eat, just like
you use a shovel to dig."
5
Examples:
Glasses : read :: crutches : walk
Relationship: object to function
"Glasses can help you read, just like crutches can
help you walk."
6
Examples:
Note: To understand the meaning of words given, we must determine first the
analogy relationship used between the pair of words presented.
There are
several
types of
analogy
relationships
to look for in
analogies
 Part to whole
 Cause to effect
 Antonyms
 Synonyms
 Definitions
 Item to category
 Time sequence
 Category
 Object to Use/function
 Product to Producer
Note: There are more possible analogy relationship could be used in showing
the connection of two ideas. We just need to be more keen in inferring
relationship of ideas presented.
Try to study the given
illustration from these pictures.
Then find the possible answer
you could infer.
8
The answer is C. because
leather boot was from
cow’s skin while pearls
was from clams.
The analogy relationship
is “Product to Producer or
origin”
1
9
The answer is C. because
camera is to picture, just
like as kettle is to The
tea. The analogy
relationship is “Object to
function
”
2
1 0
The answer is D, because
paint uses brush, just like
as thread uses needle.
The analogy relationship
is “Object to use
”
3
1 1
By using analogies
you learn meanings
of grade-appropriate
words to build your
vocabulary skill &
sharpen your
thinking ability.

Analogy is a comparison between two things.
It describes or explains one thing by examining
its similarities with another thing.
Two things may be very dissimilar and the
analogy forces the reader or listener to
understand the connection between them.
This may present comparison between two very
similar things, one of which might be more
obscure;
But the analogy provides a way for a reader or
listener to understand the more obscure thing by
picturing the more common thing.
