Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Megan Dixon Mr. Reed American Literature 13 October 2017 The Purpose and Mission of Life
What is the meaning of life? Probably one of the biggest questions in human history, yet people still
have not come up with one solid answer. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow expresses his beliefs of
people's purpose in life by writing about his own experiences and how he has allowed them to shape
him and his writing. Through Longfellow's poem A Psalm of Life, the emphasis on living life to the
fullest is accentuated through his beliefs of being courageous and living life for the sake of doing,
rather than for the sake of death. Courage means to have guts. This quality is one that is believed to
be crucial in life to Longfellow. When he says, "to be a hero ... Show more content on

The author wants the audience to do something with the time they are given and to realize that life is
more than just a blank slate waiting to be filled up. Another primary focus in this poem in the
beginning is when Longfellow is setting the stage and mentions how he believes humans should end
their life. "Not enjoyment, and not sorrow / Is our destin'd end or way," was Longfellow's way of
communicating the thought that people are not striving to end life in happiness or in sorrow, but
rather to end it having felt accomplished (9). These several lines that seem to be aimed toward the
dead are really geared more towards the living than anybody. They are targeted towards those who
are living, but not acting like it – so, someone who lazes around and neglects all responsibilities.
Finally, in the line immediately preceding the one just stated, Longfellow mentions the harsh
realities of life. "Life is real – life is earnest," meaning that things are not always going to be okay
and may seem like they are too difficult to handle, but, the whole purpose in life is to be able to
rebound from these times. A Psalm of Life was published around 1838, and just three years before,
Longfellow's wife died due to miscarriage complications. By understanding that this poem was
written as a form of therapy to the author in how he chose to handle a harsh situation, readers are
able to specifically grasp the

The Gettysburg Address By Henry Wadsworth
The "Gettysburg Address" is a speech given by former President Abraham Lincoln that focuses on
the Civil War and the horrific battle that just took place at that location. Lincoln urges the people to
remember what America is built on and freedom, liberty, and working together. Not only does
Lincoln discuss that, but he also makes sure to thank the men who have fought in the war. He also
reminded the people of what these soldiers fought for to give them the ideals that they take for
granted I plan to use this speech in my research to talk about ideas that America associates and bases
itself off of, and how those ideas influence the lives of Americans.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a famous American poet who was born on February 27, 1807 in
Portland, Maine. He lived to be seventy five years old, and was best known for poems such as "The
Courtship of Miles Standish", "Paul Revere's Ride", and "The Song of Hiawatha". Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow's writings were influenced because of his past experiences, and his writings
influenced other writers and the thoughts of his readers.
Longfellow had many interesting past experiences that led to the way he wrote. He grew up in a
wealthy family. Longfellow's father was a successful lawyer and a politician. Henry's mother loved

"Longfellow wrote about themes that appeal to all kinds of people; his poems are easily understood.
Above all, there is joyousness in them, a spirit of optimism and faith in the goodness of life; his
writing evokes immediate responses in the emotions of his readers" (Longfellow 1). Also, he
travelled a lot to other countries and studied their language and culture which he would describe in
his writings to grab the reader's attention. (Hacht and Kelly 178). In 1836, Longfellow published a
group of poems, and he called them Voices of the Night. It contained the poems: "Hymn to the
Night," "The Psalm of Life," and "The Light of the Stars, and achieved immediate popularity from
it. At the time of Longfellow's death, people referred to him as a "conspicuous force in nature"
(Hacht and Kelly 178). Through his writings, Longfellow had made readers aware of the cultural
differences of the world. In 1855, he wrote Song of Hiawatha which was an "epic poem about the
relationship between a white man and a Native American." (Longfellow 1)
While living in Germany, Longfellow was greatly influenced by German Romanticism. The age of
romanticism was "a time when American literature began to separate from England and established
its own voice and identity" (Hacht and Kelly 185). The age of romanticism came with many of the
most influential writers and poets of our time, and Longfellow

Comparing The Works Of Bryant And Wadsworth Longfellow
The poem "Memories" by Henry Wadsworth LongFellow and "The Lapse of Time" by William
Cullen Bryant have comparing and contrasting context, structures, ideas, themes, and rhyme
schemes. "Memories" is a poem that is giving details on a man who is growing of age and is reliving
the past and the memories it carried."The Lapse of Time" is similar to that poem since there is
another man who is getting old and is also remembering the memories from his live when he was
younger. Both poems have a relationship of showing time passing by and an example is from"The
Lapse of Time", which is, "the speed with which our moments fly;" (the lapse of time). That quote
represents the man and his feelings towards him aging. The two men could connect with that due to
the emotions they carry for the memories that are passing them by. The poems also have rhyme
schemes, which is the way the author choose to write the poem. ... Show more content on

"Memories" is a sonnet which means all of the fourteen lines have ten–twelve syllables in each line.
An example of that is, "With others thoughts and troubles of my own," (Memories). That specific
quote from the poem have eleven syllables that proves it is a sonnet poem. "The Lapse of Time" is
ode and has a "ABAB" rhyme scheme, which is when the first and the third sentence rhyme and the
second and fourth sentence sound the same. An example of this is, "Lament who will, in fruitless
tears, The speed with which our moments fly; I sigh not over vanished years, But watch the years
that hasten by." The words "Tears" and "Years" and "Fly" and "By" are verses that rhyme which

Analysis Of The Day Is Done By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In the poem "The Day is Done" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the narrator describes his current
state of melancholy as he watches the rain outside his window. Desperate to improve his dreariness,
he requests that someone read him a poem. He refers to poets such as Homer or Vigril, as "grand old
masters" and explains that their poems will not fulfill his desire to rest. Instead, he asks to hear from
a "humbler poet" because he knows that their poems have the capability to bring him peace and
serve as lovely music. Although the narrator invites someone to read him a poem, he explicitly states
that he does not want to hear a poem by a "grand old master." His reasoning is: For like strains of
martial music, Their mighty thoughts suggest Life's endless toil and endeavor; And to–night I long
for rest. (Longfellow 9) The narrator refuses to listen to the "mighty thoughts" of the "grand old
masters" because they "suggest life's endless toil and endeavor." In order to support his claim, he
first compares "the mighty thoughts" to the "strains of martial music." This analogy is effective
because "martial music," which pertains to warfare, relates well to the idea of "mighty." The
connotation of "mighty" includes strength, power ad force. These concepts can also be attributes of
war. The narrator considers the thoughts of the "grand old masters" as "mighty" because of the epic
battles and heroic figures often featured in epic poems. The fact that he compares not only the
music, but the

Essay about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
A Fellow's Long Worth
How does one describe a poet when he has already described himself with his own words? Although
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow isn't popular, he is such a poet. As described by Arnold Bennett,
Longfellow is "the chief minor poet of the English language." Among a harsh lineup of critics,
however, they claimed he fell short of literary. This is quite the contrary.
Longfellow attended Bowdoin college, near Portland, Maine where he was born and raised. The
college offered him the newly formed position as chair of modern languages. "Two things are
striking about this event: the informality of the academic approach to language studies and the
obvious natural gift that Longfellow possessed" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of scribbling lofty lyrics and inscrutable stanzas, Longfellow's poetry is simple, flows with a
definite rhyme scheme, and allows anybody to encompass themselves with Longfellow's visions.
Some poems dealing with nature and his visions are "Daylight and Moonlight," "Hymn to the
Night," "Daybreak" and "The Rainy Day." Each one describes a different time of day, whether it
personifies the wind in "Daybreak" or gives a life lesson about gloomy days in "The Rainy Day."
Unlike his contemporaries, Emerson, Poe, and Whitman, his poetry isn't far–fetched or musty, trying
to collapse the mind with theory and philosophy.
Even in his longer works, like "Hiawatha," "The Skeleton in Armor" and "Paul Revere's Ride,"
Longfellow takes his pen and tells fervent stories that echo inside the reader. "He wished to write
not only for 'the few who think' but also for 'the many who feel,' assuming a certain community of
nature, interest, and cultural inheritance between himself and his readers" (Wagenknecht 22). Much
like Thomas Paine in "The Crisis Papers," Longfellow knew his readers, and although they weren't
educated in the fundamentals of poetry, they were educated enough to read. This powered his poetry
and therefore nature and emotion gorged his writing and propelled it forward, even if some critics
and historians view him as an underdog. "It is time to rediscover Longfellow,

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Accomplishments
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the first famous American poet, was born on February 27, 1807 in
Portland Maine, then part of Massachusetts. The War of 1812 occurred when he was only five years
old, but the effects lasted much longer, as evidenced by a poem he wrote later in life titled "My Lost
Youth." Longfellow's interest in reading was something his mother encouraged. Two books she gave
him were Robinson Crusoe and Don Quixote. One of his first works, "Battle of Lovell's Pond," he
published in the "Portland Gazette" without informing his family. "Later that evening while at a
friend's house, he overheard the father say to another friend how terrible the poem was."1 Despite
this severe disappointment, he continued to pursue his dream ... Show more content on

Nevertheless, he continued translating throughout his entire life. Longfellow's first trip to Europe
from 1826 to 1829 resulted in his acquiring the languages French, Spanish, Portuguese, and
German. On his return, he taught for five years at Bowdoin College before receiving an offer from
Harvard to travel Europe again, then returning to teach there. Eager to improve his position,
Longfellow accepted the proposal, traveled, and worked for eighteen years as director of the Modern
Languages Department and as a substitute teacher for Spanish, French, Italian, and German classes.
During his time at Harvard, he wrote "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" in 1847, among other works.
At last Longfellow left Harvard and began his life as a full time poet and writer. Subsequently, he
wrote The Song of Hiawatha in 1855, an epic poem concerning Native American legends, "The
Courtship of Miles Standish" in 1858, and "Paul Revere's Ride" in 1860, just before the Civil War.
"Paul Revere's Ride" was a short story depicting the beginning of the American revolution, and he
wrote it to awake patriotism and commonality among the opposing parties. As he later recorded in
his journal in 1878: "I have only one desire; and that is for harmony, and a frank and honest
understanding between North and

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Figurative Language
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a poet who will forever be remembered and appreciated for his
non–discriminatory views on different cultures and parts of the world, which inspired his work and
poetry to be written in a language meant for all, specifically explained through figurative language
and similes.
Born in Maine early 19th century, Henry Wadsworth proceeded to travel the world, specifically
twice to europe before settling down and taking up teaching duties at Harvard officially in 1837.
During these trips, his affinity with Old World Civilization was established. His love for the old
world prompted the writing of most of his work, including the collection The belfry of Bruges and
several others like The Day is Done. This collection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The views and ideas about this poet are extremely universal. Basically seen by all, Henry
Wadsworth was a poet whose goal was to make poetry coherent to all. As said by many, his entire
aim was to reach the widest possible audience, and he did this by writing in a language
understandable for everyone meant for generality; this later being why his poetry is still popular. As
already said, the poem The Day is Done supports the critics view by simplifying speech, through
figurative language, thus creating the morals from the poetry easier to recognize. An example is
previously given, where a simile is used to put a composite thought into a honest meaning, without a
lot of thinking and analyzing. Going off of this thought another example can be drawn from the
same text, in fact a few more. One of which being the simile that "darkness falls (upon) night" like
"feathers from birds". Here the simile explains that darkness and sorrow come slowly, yet steadily,
like feathers falling from birds in the sky. Without having to think too deeply on the subject, the
meaning is quite clear and understandable, which is what the critics say about all of his work.
Retouching on the point this author's work is still relevant and known, as brought up before, Henry
Wadsworth poems will always be outstanding for the fact he as a poet is idolized for wanting to

`` Mezzo Cammin `` By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow And When...
In the poems "Mezzo cammin" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and " When I have a fear" by John
keats, both poems themes are about the imminence of death and their unfulfilled dreams in life.
There are many similarities in the poem but they are mostly in the beginning of the poems, the
conclusion on the other hand is not similar. In "Mezzo cammin'' the main theme of the poem is the
reminisce of his dreams from the past. Keats poems emphasize a theme of the waste of a physical
life and his fears associated with this waste. The similarities seen in the poem are for most part in
the beginning of the text. Long fellow states that '' Half of his life is gone'' and Keats then states that
''may cease to be''. They then proceed to express their fears of not being able to accomplish the goals
that they had. Long fellows acknowledges his down falls from his past, stating' 'The years slip from
me and have not fulfilled the aspirations of my youth, to build some tower of song with lofty
parapet'' (lines 2–3). Keats fears are also very similar as he uses the word "Before'' multiple times,
showing the reader his fears of dying before achieving the life goals that he has. When reaching the
second part of the poems, the reader starts to see the differences between the poems. Keats starts to
talk about the "Cloudy symbols and the "shadow". It seems that Keats might believe that love is a
predetermined life event, seeming as though he is disappointed that he might of missed out on an

The Wadsworth Athenaeum Of Art
The Wadsworth Athenaeum of Art has been in existence since 1842. Located in Hartford,
Connecticut, it is the nation's oldest public art museum. The founder, Daniel Wadsworth, was a
world–renowned art patron who acquired many famous works that would put his museum at the
forefront of all its competitors. The museum has a impeccable reputation as a leader for innovation
and experimentation due to its previous Director, A. Everett "Chick" Austin, Jr. Austin always
pushed the envelop by continuing to feature new styles of art and different mediums of art.
Currently, the museum is home to almost 50,000 pieces that vary from paintings to historical
artifacts. The collection features pieces from over 5,000 years and is a big piece of not only
Connecticut's, but also a part of American history.
The museum has many different collections but the one I was most impressed by its extensive
collection of American Art that features paintings from the Hudson River School, Georgia O'Keefe,
and Norma Rockwell, but also sculptures by other famous artist. During High School, I took an
Environmental Science course that did not only cover the scientific aspects of the subject, but also

The Nature Of Nature In The Rainy Day By Henry Wadsworth...
Since the beginning of time, nature has always been there to support and nourish everything that
inhabits it. This goes from the plants to the animals that live their everyday lives depending on
nature's support. However nature has been around for so long that we humans have become
accustomed to it always being there. This has caused us to take it for granted which is why we never
stop to see the deeper meaning and lessons nature has to offer. Nature has many other important
values beyond it being just a resource, it is also a teacher of many important life values. Many poets
have written about the true beauty of nature and its deeper lessons. One of these poets is the famous
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who became the first American writer to be honored with a bust in
the poet's corner of London's Westminster Abbey for his amazing poems that inspired life in
America. Much of his work have become classic American hero stories such as "Paul Revere's Ride"
but he also touches upon the subject of nature and its values. In his first of three poems entitled "The
Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" he shows how nature is powerful and beautiful compared to us weak
humans. In his next poem entitled "The Rainy Day", Longfellow discusses how life has its good and
bad times, but one should always look back to nature to help them conquer their challenges. His
final poem named "My Cathedral" shows how nature's beauty and lessons are the most important
thing in the world and should not be

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Research Paper
Henry Longfellow
In doing my research on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I have composed my essay into four parts.
First, I started off by describing Henry's early childhood all the way to old age. Then, I went on to
giving a description of what the Romantic Period was. After that, I explicated his poem Flower–De–

works cited page to show where I found my material to put my essay together.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. He was the

He uses figurative language such as, allusions and metaphors. In his poem he says "And winged
with the celestial azure, bearest / The message of some God." meaning that he believes that the
flower–de–luce is a flower for God (Longfellow 1). In the lines "...And down the listed sunbeam
rides resplendent / With steel–blue mail and shield. / Thou art the Iris, fair among the fairest, / Who,
armed with golden rod..." Henry uses metaphors to show that the flower is strong and sturdy but, at
the same time, it is soft and fragile (1). Not only does he use figurative language, but he uses a
major component that defines poetry during the Romantic Period. Henry uses deep and true feeling
while writing Flower–De–Luce. He uses words like beautiful, radiant, joy, and says things like
"...fairest among the fair..." showing his deep appreciation for the flower–de–luce (1). Above all he
uses nature, which is one the more important things that was used in poetry during the Romantic
Period. Henry's entire poem is about a flower. In the lines "O flower–de–luce, bloom on, and let the
river / Linger to kiss thy feet! / O flower of song, bloom on, and make forever / The world more fair
and sweet." He talks about how beautiful it is and how it brightens his mood and day when he is
around it (1). Along with nature, he uses imagery throughout the poem to paint a picture of how
beautiful the flower–de–luce is. Henry describes the beauty of the flower–de–luce by saying "Born
in the purple, born to joy and pleasance,..." (1). In the poem Flower–De–Luce Henry focuses on the
beauty of nature by dedicating a poem to the flower–de–luce, which has elements of Romanticism

Henry had a way of tying things going on in society, his personal life, and emotions in his poetry. He

a friend are speaking with one another about the British Army. The two men think that the soldiers
are going to leave boston later that night but they are having trouble knowing whether or not they
will go by sea or by land. Paul Revere has a plan to warn the people, but he needs to know what

How Is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Alike
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote two very touching poems. Both similar, but different in many
ways as well. Also both written in very two different parts of his life. One of them he wrote when he
was young and one when he was quiet a bit older. One of them being " A Psalm of Life". In this
poem Longfellow expresses that everyone should live in the moment because tomorrow may or may
not come but we are not in charge of that so we might as well enjoy our life. By saying this we also
shouldn't dwell on the past because that is out of our hands as well. He believes that we should leave
our mark on this world when we unfortunately have to leave it, and hopefully make people
remember us. By making people remember us he preaches that we not follow

A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea in 1835, which did not succeed (Wagenknecht). He began teaching
Italian, Spanish, and French at the college, married Mary Potter, and wrote six foreign language
textbooks earning him the Smith Professorship of Modern Languages at Harvard College soon after
("Longfellow"). Before accepting this new position at Harvard, he, his wife, and two friends went to
Europe in 1835 to improve his fluency in foreign languages. This was a turning point in
Longfellow's life however, when his wife Mary died of a complicated miscarriage, and although he
continued his trip, he was deeply entrenched in near–suicidal depression (Lukes). It seemed to be
pure serendipity when in Boston, he met and fell in love with a woman named Frances Appleton,
whom he called Fanny, though she did not love him back (Wagenknecht). He returned to Harvard as

Emily Dickinson And Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Emily Dickinson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow both used symbolism to bring their poems more
depth and understanding. The two authors wrote poems about life events and had very similar
approaches. The way they viewed life was very different from the other authors because they used
optimism in their poems which expressed the meaning more deeply. The symbolism they both used
was hidden, but once found it brought new and intriguing thoughts to their poems. These two
authors both had very powerful ideas, which was put into poetry and influenced the minds of many
people. The poem, "Hope", by Emily Dickinson is about a bird and throughout the poem you realize
that the bird is not a bird at all, but symbolizes hope. The poem talks about the challenges that the
bird has to go through to keep hope alive. In one stanza it talks about a dark, terrifying storm, which
represents challenges in life. The bird still stays above the storm and this helps further the idea that
hope is with you even in the darkest times. For example, "I've heard it in the chillest land– and on
the strangest Sea– yet– never– and Extremity, it asked a crumb – of me" (Dickinson). This quote
through the symbolism of the bird is saying that even when hope is pushing its limits it will never
ask anything of you. This poem was beautifully written and emphasizes how important hope is to
people in their daily lives. The poem by Longfellow is called," The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls". This
poem is filled with symbolism, for example in the third stanza there is a traveler and his footprints
are in the sands and then they are not; this represents the traveler dying. "The morning breaks; the
steeds in their stalls, Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns
the traveller to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls"(Longfellow). In this quote the waves are
life and the purpose of the last line is to announce that life will keep happening even if people die.
He is optimistic about this because his theory is that people can still do things even though their time
is short on this Earth. He obviously wants to make this theory known because he repeats the line
"The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" at the end of every stanza. The two

Philip Freneau And Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Summary
Life was a prominent subject in nineteenth century literature. Poems, books, and even everyday
conversations contemplated the topic. From exploring its meaning, its purpose, and its impact,
individuals were obsessed with it. Two such pundits were Philip Freneau and Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow. They accepted the challenge and broached the subject of life in their poetry. Their
perspectives, however, were anything but concurrent. By focusing on Freneau's "The Wild Honey
Suckle" and Longfellow's "A Psalm of Life" the authors' contrasting views become exceptionally
clear. While one valued humility and acknowledgment of human fragility, the other sought to spark
ambition and enliven a sense of dutiful perseverance. Paying close attention to the time frame in
which each author wrote is also significant in identifying the reason behind such differing
perspectives. Not only does the era play a part, but also each writer's personal beliefs and values.
Freneau was extremely realistic and literal; Longfellow was optimistic and indicative. Taking an in–
depth look at each author respectively and analyzing their contrasting opinions as well as their
reasoning facilitates a deeper understanding of not only the writers but the works themselves. If one
thing is agreed upon, it's that life truly is short; however, its purpose is entirely subject to opinion.
Philip Freneau possesses a very stark view on man's existence, harping upon the insignificance of
human life in his poem, "The Wild Honey

Summary Of Paul Revere's Ride
On the Historical Integrity of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Paul Revere's Ride" In history, many
feats are told time and time again and become more grandeur with each utterance, to the point where
nearly all original meaning is long lost. As Doctor Manhattan said it in Watchmen, "The illusion
vanishes, almost before it has registered" (Gibbons and Moore 26). For example, with Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," this certainly is the case. To suggest that the
aforementioned poem is a work of historical non–fiction is a suggestion that can be simply and
eloquently discredited using real documents, the face value of the piece, and simple logic. To begin,
Longfellow's poem simply is not a credible source of historical information, as there are real letters
from the night of Paul Revere's ride that contain the true sequence of events. In a letter to Jeremy
Belknap; for instance, Paul Revere summarizes his actions over the course of the night. In reality,
"Paul Revere's ride" was slower paced and far more suspenseful. The poem makes no mention of the
British officers that threaten to "blow Revere's brains out" (Gilder Lehrman). In the letter, there are
many more comrades along on the journey, whereas the poem suggest that Revere was a lone rider,
storming into each town to alert the people at full gallop. As a result, it is ridiculous to even pose the
question of the historical integrity of Longfellow's poem when the first relevant source of
information

When a person is feeling lost and refuses to express emotion they can lose themselves in nature and
release emotion. Many people find peace in nature and find it easier to release stress due to nature's
relaxing and calming qualities. This poem creates a short yet sweet getaway for a reader who is

love. Longfellow includes, "Doust thou retire unto thy rest at night, / And from thy darkened

One of Longfellow's famous poems, A Psalm of Life, includes many distinctive literary devices that
he consistently used throughout his works. One device, rhythm, is Longfellow's signature
throughout all of these poems. In A Psalm of Life, the rhyme scheme is presented as a simple

Poetry Analysis Of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Poetry Analysis of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow produced many works of poetry in his lifetime, many which dealt
with American folklore and colonial New England. This is how Longfellow's extended knowledge
of the history of his homeland, and his history allows him to write his informative, and influential
poems such as "Paul Revere's Ride", which some critics considered very basic in its wordage and
had a loose voice. As a writer for just under half his life, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow chose to
write about American folklore, as well as Native American folklore and folklore of the countries he
travelled to, that was influential to his readers and American citizens alike. He was born in Portland,
Maine on February 27, 1807, the second son of seven siblings, he was attending school at three with
his older brother, and by age six he knew Latin, and could read, spell, and multiply. He started
college at age 14 and graduated at age 19, ranking fourth in a class of 38 students. Soon after he
became a professor at Bowdoin only to leave 8 years later, to teach at Harvard, which he would
leave after 18 years of teaching to write full time. One of the great pieces that he composed roughly
20 years prior to his death was the collection of stories he named Tales of a Wayside Inn, which
contained a poem called "Paul Revere's Ride", which was one of the first tales of Paul Revere's ride.
Logically, it can be inferred with the information previously stated that Longfellow was a large
influence in ideas of American Folklore and as a teacher of unknown American history through his
works. This means that through his simplistic and accurate poems he added, changed, and/or
influenced the views of American history of those who read his poem, in his time and the present.
His influence on the American people's view of historical events, and his teachings of said American
history can be seen in many of his works such as Paul Revere's Ride. It is in this poem, though that

ideas on specific topics such as the start of the American Revolution. The battle of Lexington and

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Music Analysis
In the music world, there are many talented musicians either in classical, contemporary, or modern
music. One of the things that I like more about music is the ways that it communicates to the
audience and what can express; as once said by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow "Music is the
Universal Language of all mankind". We can see the difference of communication in many forms of
melody for example in the blues you can feel the pain of the artist, in salsa you can see the
enjoyment of the singer and the sadness; in addition, you also can see it in pop, rock, r&b, soul, jazz,
etc. These two concerts that I am going to review next, are going to show how music communicates

both things at the same time and she can dance and laugh with the audience. With the help of the
bongos, claves, trumpets, trombones, maracas, tres, saxophone, she was able to make the concert a
fascinated, fierce, authentic performance. Olga Tañon made this concert with a combination of salsa

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an influential American writer in the 19th century. Born in
Maine in 1807, Longfellow was 5 years old when the War of 1812 occurred. In a poem he wrote
much later in life, "My Lost Youth", Longfellow recounts begging his father for a toy drum. Being a
small child, Longfellow could not grasp the magnitude of what was happening mere miles away in
the Atlantic Ocean. The Longfellow family was so close to some battles that both British and
American men who died in battle were buried down the street. Later in life, Longfellow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Many people in today's society tend to only listen to the beat of the song rather than the meaning,
and vise versa. They either like the lyrics or like the beat and do not fully understand the meaning.
For example, Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" is a very catchy song with a good chorus but
the meaning is misconstrued. The meaning and the musicality is not intertwined. It is a song about a
a disturbed kid going on a killing spree. Unlike Foster the People, people adore Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, a nineteenth century poet, not because he had a good rhythm, but because he
intertwines musicality and imagery. He merges sight and sound to establish a cinematic orchestra
and paints a vivid image full of depth and personality. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow incorporates
religion through the influence of nature and the strong presence of musicality in "The Cross of
Snow", "My Lost Youth", "Autumn" and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls". Many of Longfellow's
influences on his works have sprouted from his early life experiences. Longfellow was born in
Portland, Maine to Stephen Longfellow and Zilpah Longfellow. As a child Longfellow was known
for his vivid imagination. Little did he know that his childhood experiences sparked many of ideas
for his future works. Stephen Longfellow was a leading Portland lawyer who wished to start
Longfellow's education early. Thus, Longfellow began schooling at the age of three and attended
college at fourteen. Gartner states that "The tier of

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  • 1. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Megan Dixon Mr. Reed American Literature 13 October 2017 The Purpose and Mission of Life What is the meaning of life? Probably one of the biggest questions in human history, yet people still have not come up with one solid answer. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow expresses his beliefs of people's purpose in life by writing about his own experiences and how he has allowed them to shape him and his writing. Through Longfellow's poem A Psalm of Life, the emphasis on living life to the fullest is accentuated through his beliefs of being courageous and living life for the sake of doing, rather than for the sake of death. Courage means to have guts. This quality is one that is believed to be crucial in life to Longfellow. When he says, "to be a hero ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author wants the audience to do something with the time they are given and to realize that life is more than just a blank slate waiting to be filled up. Another primary focus in this poem in the beginning is when Longfellow is setting the stage and mentions how he believes humans should end their life. "Not enjoyment, and not sorrow / Is our destin'd end or way," was Longfellow's way of communicating the thought that people are not striving to end life in happiness or in sorrow, but rather to end it having felt accomplished (9). These several lines that seem to be aimed toward the dead are really geared more towards the living than anybody. They are targeted towards those who are living, but not acting like it – so, someone who lazes around and neglects all responsibilities. Finally, in the line immediately preceding the one just stated, Longfellow mentions the harsh realities of life. "Life is real – life is earnest," meaning that things are not always going to be okay and may seem like they are too difficult to handle, but, the whole purpose in life is to be able to rebound from these times. A Psalm of Life was published around 1838, and just three years before, Longfellow's wife died due to miscarriage complications. By understanding that this poem was written as a form of therapy to the author in how he chose to handle a harsh situation, readers are able to specifically grasp the ... The Gettysburg Address By Henry Wadsworth The "Gettysburg Address" is a speech given by former President Abraham Lincoln that focuses on the Civil War and the horrific battle that just took place at that location. Lincoln urges the people to remember what America is built on and freedom, liberty, and working together. Not only does Lincoln discuss that, but he also makes sure to thank the men who have fought in the war. He also reminded the people of what these soldiers fought for to give them the ideals that they take for granted I plan to use this speech in my research to talk about ideas that America associates and bases itself off of, and how those ideas influence the lives of Americans. Also, he travelled a lot to other countries and studied their language and culture which he would describe in his writings to grab the reader's attention. (Hacht and Kelly 178). Comparing The Works Of Bryant And Wadsworth Longfellow The poem "Memories" by Henry Wadsworth LongFellow and "The Lapse of Time" by William Cullen Bryant have comparing and contrasting context, structures, ideas, themes, and rhyme schemes. "Memories" is a poem that is giving details on a man who is growing of age and is reliving the past and the memories it carried."The Lapse of Time" is similar to that poem since there is another man who is getting old and is also remembering the memories from his live when he was younger. Both poems have a relationship of showing time passing by and an example is from"The Lapse of Time", which is, "the speed with which our moments fly;" (the lapse of time). • 9. Analysis Of The Day Is Done By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow In the poem "The Day is Done" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the narrator describes his current state of melancholy as he watches the rain outside his window. Desperate to improve his dreariness, he requests that someone read him a poem. He refers to poets such as Homer or Vigril, as "grand old masters" and explains that their poems will not fulfill his desire to rest. Instead, he asks to hear from a "humbler poet" because he knows that their poems have the capability to bring him peace and serve as lovely music. Although the narrator invites someone to read him a poem, he explicitly states that he does not want to hear a poem by a "grand old master." His reasoning is: For like strains of martial music, Their mighty thoughts suggest Life's endless toil and endeavor; And to–night I long for rest. (Longfellow 9) The narrator refuses to listen to the "mighty thoughts" of the "grand old masters" because they "suggest life's endless toil and endeavor." In order to support his claim, he first compares "the mighty thoughts" to the "strains of martial music." This analogy is effective because "martial music," which pertains to warfare, relates well to the idea of "mighty." The connotation of "mighty" includes strength, power ad force. These concepts can also be attributes of war. The narrator considers the thoughts of the "grand old masters" as "mighty" because of the epic battles and heroic figures often featured in epic poems. • 11. Essay about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Henry Wadsworth Longfellow A Fellow's Long Worth How does one describe a poet when he has already described himself with his own words? Although Henry Wadsworth Longfellow isn't popular, he is such a poet. As described by Arnold Bennett, Longfellow is "the chief minor poet of the English language." Among a harsh lineup of critics, however, they claimed he fell short of literary. This is quite the contrary. Longfellow attended Bowdoin college, near Portland, Maine where he was born and raised. The college offered him the newly formed position as chair of modern languages. "Two things are striking about this event: the informality of the academic approach to language studies and the obvious natural gift that Longfellow possessed" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of scribbling lofty lyrics and inscrutable stanzas, Longfellow's poetry is simple, flows with a definite rhyme scheme, and allows anybody to encompass themselves with Longfellow's visions. Some poems dealing with nature and his visions are "Daylight and Moonlight," "Hymn to the Night," "Daybreak" and "The Rainy Day." Each one describes a different time of day, whether it personifies the wind in "Daybreak" or gives a life lesson about gloomy days in "The Rainy Day." Unlike his contemporaries, Emerson, Poe, and Whitman, his poetry isn't far–fetched or musty, trying to collapse the mind with theory and philosophy. Even in his longer works, like "Hiawatha," "The Skeleton in Armor" and "Paul Revere's Ride," Longfellow takes his pen and tells fervent stories that echo inside the reader. "He wished to write not only for 'the few who think' but also for 'the many who feel,' assuming a certain community of nature, interest, and cultural inheritance between himself and his readers" (Wagenknecht 22). Much like Thomas Paine in "The Crisis Papers," Longfellow knew his readers, and although they weren't educated in the fundamentals of poetry, they were educated enough to read. This powered his poetry and therefore nature and emotion gorged his writing and propelled it forward, even if some critics and historians view him as an underdog. • 13. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Accomplishments Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the first famous American poet, was born on February 27, 1807 in Portland Maine, then part of Massachusetts. The War of 1812 occurred when he was only five years old, but the effects lasted much longer, as evidenced by a poem he wrote later in life titled "My Lost Youth." Longfellow's interest in reading was something his mother encouraged. Two books she gave him were Robinson Crusoe and Don Quixote. One of his first works, "Battle of Lovell's Pond," he published in the "Portland Gazette" without informing his family. "Later that evening while at a friend's house, he overheard the father say to another friend how terrible the poem was."1 Despite this severe disappointment, he continued to pursue his dream ... Longfellow's first trip to Europe from 1826 to 1829 resulted in his acquiring the languages French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German. On his return, he taught for five years at Bowdoin College before receiving an offer from Harvard to travel Europe again, then returning to teach there. Eager to improve his position, Longfellow accepted the proposal, traveled, and worked for eighteen years as director of the Modern Languages Department and as a substitute teacher for Spanish, French, Italian, and German classes. During his time at Harvard, he wrote "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" in 1847, among other works. At last Longfellow left Harvard and began his life as a full time poet and writer. Subsequently, he wrote The Song of Hiawatha in 1855, an epic poem concerning Native American legends, "The Courtship of Miles Standish" in 1858, and "Paul Revere's Ride" in 1860, just before the Civil War. "Paul Revere's Ride" was a short story depicting the beginning of the American revolution, and he wrote it to awake patriotism and commonality among the opposing parties. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Figurative Language Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a poet who will forever be remembered and appreciated for his non–discriminatory views on different cultures and parts of the world, which inspired his work and poetry to be written in a language meant for all, specifically explained through figurative language and similes. Born in Maine early 19th century, Henry Wadsworth proceeded to travel the world, specifically twice to europe before settling down and taking up teaching duties at Harvard officially in 1837. During these trips, his affinity with Old World Civilization was established. His love for the old world prompted the writing of most of his work, including the collection The belfry of Bruges and several others like The Day is Done. This collection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The views and ideas about this poet are extremely universal. Basically seen by all, Henry Wadsworth was a poet whose goal was to make poetry coherent to all. As said by many, his entire aim was to reach the widest possible audience, and he did this by writing in a language understandable for everyone meant for generality; this later being why his poetry is still popular. As already said, the poem The Day is Done supports the critics view by simplifying speech, through figurative language, thus creating the morals from the poetry easier to recognize. An example is previously given, where a simile is used to put a composite thought into a honest meaning, without a lot of thinking and analyzing. Going off of this thought another example can be drawn from the same text, in fact a few more. One of which being the simile that "darkness falls (upon) night" like "feathers from birds". Here the simile explains that darkness and sorrow come slowly, yet steadily, like feathers falling from birds in the sky. Without having to think too deeply on the subject, the meaning is quite clear and understandable, which is what the critics say about all of his work. Retouching on the point this author's work is still relevant and known, as brought up before, Henry Wadsworth poems will always be outstanding for the fact he as a poet is idolized for wanting to ... • 17. `` Mezzo Cammin `` By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow And When... In the poems "Mezzo cammin" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and " When I have a fear" by John keats, both poems themes are about the imminence of death and their unfulfilled dreams in life. There are many similarities in the poem but they are mostly in the beginning of the poems, the conclusion on the other hand is not similar. In "Mezzo cammin'' the main theme of the poem is the reminisce of his dreams from the past. Keats poems emphasize a theme of the waste of a physical life and his fears associated with this waste. The similarities seen in the poem are for most part in the beginning of the text. Long fellow states that '' Half of his life is gone'' and Keats then states that ''may cease to be''. They then proceed to express their fears of not being able to accomplish the goals that they had. Long fellows acknowledges his down falls from his past, stating' 'The years slip from me and have not fulfilled the aspirations of my youth, to build some tower of song with lofty parapet'' (lines 2–3). Keats fears are also very similar as he uses the word "Before'' multiple times, showing the reader his fears of dying before achieving the life goals that he has. When reaching the second part of the poems, the reader starts to see the differences between the poems. Keats starts to talk about the "Cloudy symbols and the "shadow". It seems that Keats might believe that love is a predetermined life event, seeming as though he is disappointed that he might of missed out on an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The founder, Daniel Wadsworth, was a world–renowned art patron who acquired many famous works that would put his museum at the forefront of all its competitors. The museum has a impeccable reputation as a leader for innovation and experimentation due to its previous Director, A. Everett "Chick" Austin, Jr. Austin always pushed the envelop by continuing to feature new styles of art and different mediums of art. Currently, the museum is home to almost 50,000 pieces that vary from paintings to historical artifacts. The collection features pieces from over 5,000 years and is a big piece of not only Connecticut's, but also a part of American history. The museum has many different collections but the one I was most impressed by its extensive collection of American Art that features paintings from the Hudson River School, Georgia O'Keefe, and Norma Rockwell, but also sculptures by other famous artist. During High School, I took an Environmental Science course that did not only cover the scientific aspects of the subject, but also the how the environment has been immortalized. We studied the Hudson River School and artist like Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and Albert Bierstadt, whose works all featured the many environmental landscapes in their works. • 23. The Nature Of Nature In The Rainy Day By Henry Wadsworth... Since the beginning of time, nature has always been there to support and nourish everything that inhabits it. This goes from the plants to the animals that live their everyday lives depending on nature's support. However nature has been around for so long that we humans have become accustomed to it always being there. This has caused us to take it for granted which is why we never stop to see the deeper meaning and lessons nature has to offer. Nature has many other important values beyond it being just a resource, it is also a teacher of many important life values. Many poets have written about the true beauty of nature and its deeper lessons. One of these poets is the famous Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who became the first American writer to be honored with a bust in the poet's corner of London's Westminster Abbey for his amazing poems that inspired life in America. Much of his work have become classic American hero stories such as "Paul Revere's Ride" but he also touches upon the subject of nature and its values. In his first of three poems entitled "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" he shows how nature is powerful and beautiful compared to us weak humans. In his next poem entitled "The Rainy Day", Longfellow discusses how life has its good and bad times, but one should always look back to nature to help them conquer their challenges. His final poem named "My Cathedral" shows how nature's beauty and lessons are the most important thing in the world and should not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Research Paper Henry Longfellow In doing my research on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I have composed my essay into four parts. First, I started off by describing Henry's early childhood all the way to old age. Then, I went on to giving a description of what the Romantic Period was. After that, I explicated his poem Flower–De– Luce and talked about how it fit the Romantic Period. Finally, I included a copy of his poem and a works cited page to show where I found my material to put my essay together. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. He was the second oldest out of eight children. Everybody who met him found out that he had a very imagination, and had an appetite for learning (Maine Historical Society 1). When he ... In his poem he says "And winged with the celestial azure, bearest / The message of some God." meaning that he believes that the flower–de–luce is a flower for God (Longfellow 1). In the lines "...And down the listed sunbeam rides resplendent / With steel–blue mail and shield. / Thou art the Iris, fair among the fairest, / Who, armed with golden rod..." Henry uses metaphors to show that the flower is strong and sturdy but, at the same time, it is soft and fragile (1). Not only does he use figurative language, but he uses a major component that defines poetry during the Romantic Period. Henry uses deep and true feeling while writing Flower–De–Luce. He uses words like beautiful, radiant, joy, and says things like "...fairest among the fair..." showing his deep appreciation for the flower–de–luce (1). Above all he uses nature, which is one the more important things that was used in poetry during the Romantic Period. Henry's entire poem is about a flower. In the lines "O flower–de–luce, bloom on, and let the river / Linger to kiss thy feet! / O flower of song, bloom on, and make forever / The world more fair and sweet." He talks about how beautiful it is and how it brightens his mood and day when he is around it (1). Along with nature, he uses imagery throughout the poem to paint a picture of how beautiful the flower–de–luce is. Henry describes the beauty of the flower–de–luce by saying "Born in the purple, born to joy and pleasance,..." (1). In the poem Flower–De–Luce Henry focuses on the beauty of nature by dedicating a poem to the flower–de–luce, which has elements of Romanticism throughout ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Emily Dickinson And Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Emily Dickinson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow both used symbolism to bring their poems more depth and understanding. The two authors wrote poems about life events and had very similar approaches. The way they viewed life was very different from the other authors because they used optimism in their poems which expressed the meaning more deeply. The symbolism they both used was hidden, but once found it brought new and intriguing thoughts to their poems. These two authors both had very powerful ideas, which was put into poetry and influenced the minds of many people. The poem, "Hope", by Emily Dickinson is about a bird and throughout the poem you realize that the bird is not a bird at all, but symbolizes hope. The poem talks about the challenges that the bird has to go through to keep hope alive. In one stanza it talks about a dark, terrifying storm, which represents challenges in life. The bird still stays above the storm and this helps further the idea that hope is with you even in the darkest times. For example, "I've heard it in the chillest land– and on the strangest Sea– yet– never– and Extremity, it asked a crumb – of me" (Dickinson). This quote through the symbolism of the bird is saying that even when hope is pushing its limits it will never ask anything of you. This poem was beautifully written and emphasizes how important hope is to people in their daily lives. The poem by Longfellow is called," The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls". This poem is filled with symbolism, for example in the third stanza there is a traveler and his footprints are in the sands and then they are not; this represents the traveler dying. "The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls, Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveller to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls"(Longfellow). In this quote the waves are life and the purpose of the last line is to announce that life will keep happening even if people die. He is optimistic about this because his theory is that people can still do things even though their time is short on this Earth. He obviously wants to make this theory known because he repeats the line "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" at the end of every stanza. The two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Philip Freneau And Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Summary Life was a prominent subject in nineteenth century literature. Poems, books, and even everyday conversations contemplated the topic. From exploring its meaning, its purpose, and its impact, individuals were obsessed with it. Two such pundits were Philip Freneau and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. They accepted the challenge and broached the subject of life in their poetry. Their perspectives, however, were anything but concurrent. By focusing on Freneau's "The Wild Honey Suckle" and Longfellow's "A Psalm of Life" the authors' contrasting views become exceptionally clear. While one valued humility and acknowledgment of human fragility, the other sought to spark ambition and enliven a sense of dutiful perseverance. Paying close attention to the time frame in which each author wrote is also significant in identifying the reason behind such differing perspectives. Not only does the era play a part, but also each writer's personal beliefs and values. Freneau was extremely realistic and literal; Longfellow was optimistic and indicative. Taking an in– depth look at each author respectively and analyzing their contrasting opinions as well as their reasoning facilitates a deeper understanding of not only the writers but the works themselves. If one thing is agreed upon, it's that life truly is short; however, its purpose is entirely subject to opinion. Philip Freneau possesses a very stark view on man's existence, harping upon the insignificance of human life in his poem, "The Wild Honey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Summary Of Paul Revere's Ride On the Historical Integrity of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Paul Revere's Ride" In history, many feats are told time and time again and become more grandeur with each utterance, to the point where nearly all original meaning is long lost. As Doctor Manhattan said it in Watchmen, "The illusion vanishes, almost before it has registered" (Gibbons and Moore 26). For example, with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," this certainly is the case. To suggest that the aforementioned poem is a work of historical non–fiction is a suggestion that can be simply and eloquently discredited using real documents, the face value of the piece, and simple logic. To begin, Longfellow's poem simply is not a credible source of historical information, as there are real letters from the night of Paul Revere's ride that contain the true sequence of events. In a letter to Jeremy Belknap; for instance, Paul Revere summarizes his actions over the course of the night. In reality, "Paul Revere's ride" was slower paced and far more suspenseful. The poem makes no mention of the British officers that threaten to "blow Revere's brains out" (Gilder Lehrman). In the letter, there are many more comrades along on the journey, whereas the poem suggest that Revere was a lone rider, storming into each town to alert the people at full gallop. As a result, it is ridiculous to even pose the question of the historical integrity of Longfellow's poem when the first relevant source of information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Poetry Analysis Of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Poetry Analysis of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Henry Wadsworth Longfellow produced many works of poetry in his lifetime, many which dealt with American folklore and colonial New England. This is how Longfellow's extended knowledge of the history of his homeland, and his history allows him to write his informative, and influential poems such as "Paul Revere's Ride", which some critics considered very basic in its wordage and had a loose voice. As a writer for just under half his life, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow chose to write about American folklore, as well as Native American folklore and folklore of the countries he travelled to, that was influential to his readers and American citizens alike. He was born in Portland, Maine on February 27, 1807, the second son of seven siblings, he was attending school at three with his older brother, and by age six he knew Latin, and could read, spell, and multiply. He started college at age 14 and graduated at age 19, ranking fourth in a class of 38 students. Soon after he became a professor at Bowdoin only to leave 8 years later, to teach at Harvard, which he would leave after 18 years of teaching to write full time. One of the great pieces that he composed roughly 20 years prior to his death was the collection of stories he named Tales of a Wayside Inn, which contained a poem called "Paul Revere's Ride", which was one of the first tales of Paul Revere's ride. Logically, it can be inferred with the information previously stated that Longfellow was a large influence in ideas of American Folklore and as a teacher of unknown American history through his works. This means that through his simplistic and accurate poems he added, changed, and/or influenced the views of American history of those who read his poem, in his time and the present. His influence on the American people's view of historical events, and his teachings of said American history can be seen in many of his works such as Paul Revere's Ride. • 73. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Music Analysis In the music world, there are many talented musicians either in classical, contemporary, or modern music. One of the things that I like more about music is the ways that it communicates to the audience and what can express; as once said by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow "Music is the Universal Language of all mankind". We can see the difference of communication in many forms of melody for example in the blues you can feel the pain of the artist, in salsa you can see the enjoyment of the singer and the sadness; in addition, you also can see it in pop, rock, r&b, soul, jazz, etc. These two concerts that I am going to review next, are going to show how music communicates and how these artists connect with the songs and the audience, also what ... In her song "Muchacho Malo" that means in English Bad Boy she sang and I quote (..) muchacho malo que pasa me matas con tu desprecio yo vuelta loca por ti y tu dandote puesto (..) and I translate (..) bad boy what happens with you, you kill me with your contempt and I go crazy for you and you giving up (..), in the part of the song she uses a sarcastic but enthralled tone which makes me feel a little intrigue on how she can be both things at the same time and she can dance and laugh with the audience. With the help of the bongos, claves, trumpets, trombones, maracas, tres, saxophone, she was able to make the concert a fascinated, fierce, authentic performance. • 77. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Many people in today's society tend to only listen to the beat of the song rather than the meaning, and vise versa. They either like the lyrics or like the beat and do not fully understand the meaning. For example, Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" is a very catchy song with a good chorus but the meaning is misconstrued. The meaning and the musicality is not intertwined. It is a song about a a disturbed kid going on a killing spree. Unlike Foster the People, people adore Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a nineteenth century poet, not because he had a good rhythm, but because he intertwines musicality and imagery. He merges sight and sound to establish a cinematic orchestra and paints a vivid image full of depth and personality. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow incorporates religion through the influence of nature and the strong presence of musicality in "The Cross of Snow", "My Lost Youth", "Autumn" and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls". Many of Longfellow's influences on his works have sprouted from his early life experiences. Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine to Stephen Longfellow and Zilpah Longfellow.
