Robert Nixon was an African–American serial killer who confessed to five murders and multiple
assaults in Chicago and Los Angeles from 1936 to 1938. He was born on June 16, 1919, in the small
town Tallulah, Louisiana. The press gave Nixon the nickname "Brick Moron" after he confessed to
the "brick bat murders" (Arney). Edna Worden, her 12–year–old daughter, Rose Valdez, Elizabeth
Rice, and Zoe Damrell were a few of his many victims. After Nixon was arrested, he was sentenced
to death and electrocuted on June 15, 1939 (Patillo).
In the Lewiston Daily, June Arney wrote that Nixon broke into a woman's home in Chicago in 1936
and looted her house before beating her to death with his "famous" brick. In 1937, he continued his

These stories worsened racial tensions in Chicago, and the murder and resulting press frightened the
white residents of the area, triggering "white flight from the once–elite areas that now bordered
black districts" (Patillo). Nixon initially denied having any connection with the killings, but the Los
Angeles Police's fingerprint evidence proved him wrong. During his trial, he eventually confessed to
raping and murdering Anna Kuchta in 1937 and assaulting at least seventeen other women.
However, he blamed his accomplice, Earl Hicks, for the murder of Johnson during his trial. Hicks,
who was also under arrest, put the blame for Johnson's murder solely on Nixon. Nixon's defense that
his accomplice had killed the woman failed, and the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that they both
were equally responsible for this murder. Nixon was convicted of the murder and was executed in
the electric chair at the Cook County Jail in 1939 (Arney).
When Richard Wright completed his draft of Native Son, Robert Nixon was charged with murdering
a woman by beating her with a brick. In his essay, "How Bigger Was Born", Wright admitted to

Much like America's history, its literature has had an equally complex, dynamic, and developing
trajectory. However, unlike how history is typically divided into centuries, literature finds itself
separated into periods of genres. For example, there was the epoch of Native American tales, the
Realism eon, and the span of the Harlem Renaissance. Furthermore, the borders between these
periods are not always definite. The stylistic characteristics and themes from one, often may bleed
into another. This is particularly visible between the Colonial Period, specifically Puritan literature,
and the Romantic and Transcendental time. Specifically, the overlap of the Puritan and
Transcendental styles is evident in the poem "Contemplations" by Anne Bradstreet. In order to fully
understand how Bradstreet foreshadowed later themes in "Contemplations", the context of the
Colonial time must be examined, along with famed works from the Transcendental period. For
starters, Anne Bradstreet was fathered by a man named Thomas Dudley. Dudley was the "manager
of the country estate of the Puritan Earl of Lincoln". At the tender age of sixteen, Anne met Simon
Bradstreet, a man who shared the same Puritan ideals as her father. They were soon married and set
off for the New World, along with "Winthrop 's fleet" among the Massachusetts Bay Company. Life

The CFS gives fatigue scores in three categories: psychological, physical, and global, along with a
binary classification of the likelihood of fatigue (Jackson & Earl, 2006). According to Jackson and
Earl (2006), the questionnaire resulted in 121 of the 162 short–haul or scheduled airline pilots being
severely fatigued. A different study involved placing questionnaire in the lockers of 1500 Portuguese
commercial pilots (Reis, Mestre, Canhão, Gradwell, & Paiva, 2016). This questionnaire asked
participants to complete the Fatigue Severity Scale. This scale expresses the significance level of
participant fatigue by using weighted questions (Reis, Mestre, Canhão, Gradwell, & Paiva, 2016).
According to Reis, et al. (2009), 90.6% of 435 respondents regularly experience fatigue based on
how they answered the Fatigue Severity Scale. A survey of 739 pilots found that fatigue was caused
mainly by night flights and jet lag, 59% and 45%, respectively (Petrilli, Roach, Dawson, & Lamond,
2006).
Pilot fatigue is a big concern for the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), as it has
been among the top of the list for safety concerns for the past 27 years (Caldwell, 2012). Incident
reports indicate that 20% of flight incidents are related to fatigue, and that during the 90's, about 45

uncivilized. The Anglo–Saxons may not have the same technological advances as people today, but
evidence in period literature suggests that they had civilized ideals. Beowulf, an epic poem about a
warrior prince who travels Scandinavia fighting monsters, contains crucial testimony to support that
the bonds of kinship, a certain mark of a civilized society, were highly valued during the time; the
importance placed on the bonds between those in the Geat community shows that the Anglo–Saxons
were, in fact, civilized. The Anglo–Saxons kept detailed records of their familial heritage through
oral stories, such as Beowulf. When the narrator introduces a character into the story, he uses family
lineage as an identifier. Beowulf introduces himself as "'King Hygelac's blood–kin,'" and King
Hrothgar notes that Beowulf's "'kin–folk and I are hearth friends'" (390). Such elaborate descriptions
of relationships are present with all of the major human characters introduced. The constant
references to lineage and bonds of friendship show that the Anglo–Saxons exceedingly valued the

"Meh," Bull said, gung–ho to the last. "We still might get out of this."
Shelby stared at her. More specifically at the RPG slung over her shoulder. "Hey, what about the
RPG?"
Bull glanced at it. "You didn't want me to shoot the little commie."
Shelby rolled her eyes. "No, I mean, couldn't shooting it function as a flare gun? Like an SOS?"
Earl laughed. "Shelby, that's the dumbest idea I ever heard. You're talking about shooting a live
grenade."
"Why..." Bull's eyes lit up. "...I bet it could, Ryder!" She unslung the RPG. "I'll just shoot it across
the aircraft carrier's bow and they're bound to see who fired it." She chipped ice off the huge gun's
trigger mechanism.
"You sure you're up to this, Admiral?" That was Shelby's way of asking if Bull wanted her to fire the
powerful gun for her.

Lear no longer wants the burdens of being the ruler he only wants the prestige that goes along with
the job. Kent realizes that Lear's" older daughters, Regan and Goneril, do not deserve to rule Britain
and that he has made a mistake by giving them power at the cost of his own. Kent sees what Lear
can't see. Once you hand your power over to someone your own standing suffers.
The loss of the King's" standing is seen in the way Oswald has lost respect for the King. After Kent
has come back to Lear, in disguise, the reader sees the first challenge to the Kings power. Upon

unanswered. It is here that we see the lost respect for the King because of the loss of his power. It is
in this scene that we see Kent take on the role of protector. Kent forces Oswald out of the Kings
presence because of his lack of respect and duty to his King. Oswald is another minor character that
Shakespeare uses to build his plot on as well as to illustrate what some of the vices of the time were.
He is the negative counterpart of Kent.
We see Oswald again after Lear leaves Goneril to go to Regan for assistance and the treatment he

In Shakespeare's novel Henry IV Part 1, the concept of war is portrayed through different
individuals. Each character perceives war differently, leading them to take independent actions. In
this era, war was not perceived as a final solution to all their problems, but as a common event
between rulers. To die for ones' country was viewed as an act of honor, although, a certain individual
disfavored this act of honor. Throughout the novel, Shakespeare's attitude reveals the unnaturalness
of civil war, but also ties relationships together.
Shakespeare portrays that the role of being a king, and obtaining power, could be played by anyone
with the right appearance and behavior. According to King Henry, Hotspur (Lord Henry Percy) is
"the theme of honor's tongue," (1.1.80) implying that he is the ideal example of being an honorable
king, unlike his son, Prince Hal, who spends majority of his time at the tavern. King Henry and Sir
Walter Blunt agree that Hotspur would be the appropriate king of France because of his bravery,
successfulness in battles and his time spent with royalty. Although, Hotspur and his father, Earl of
Northumberland, and his uncle, Earl of Worcester, plan to overthrow the king by defeating his army
on the battlefield. Hotspur explains to his army how the king rejected and shamed his family.

What Are Lady Macbeth's Decisions
In The Tragedy of Macbeth, written by the playwright William Shakespeare, a Scottish nobleman
betrays his conscience to gain power and eventually meets his downfall. Macbeth, the Scottish
nobleman, blindly follows his ambitions to his rise to royalty, and ultimately, his dishonorable
demise. His decisions affect the nature of his and other characters' relationships with one another.
The many relationships based on marriage, family, and loyalty are all tested by the decisions of the
characters involved. Marriage influenced the decisions of many characters. Macbeth, for instance,
placed his wife's thoughts and opinions above his own. In his letter to her, he writes, "This have I

After arriving home from battle and being awarded new titles and praise, Macbeth is hesitant to
break trust easily. As Lady Macbeth attempts to convince him to carry out the murder, Macbeth
explains, "He hath honored me of late, and I have bought/Golden opinions from all sorts of
people,/Which would be worn now in their newest gloss,/Not cast aside so soon"(I. vii. 35–38).
Macbeth believes he should stay loyal to the king, King Duncan, since he has been recently given
new titles and estates. However, Lady Macbeth's coercion convinces him to disregard his loyalty,
and leads to his eventual self destruction. Macduff, who is throughout the play intensely loyal to his
country of Scotland, begs Malcolm to return and rule, rather than Macbeth. Hearing Malcolm's
injurious remarks about himself, Macduff despairs and cries, "Fare thee well. /These evils thou
repeat'st upon thyself/Hath banished me from Scotland.‒O my breast, /Thy hope ends here!"(IV. iii.
129–132). Macduff is upset that Scotland will remain in the hold of the tyrant Macbeth, without a
virtuous leader to save the situation. Macduff is clearly seeking his country' salvation, without
asking for anything for himself. After the battle at Dunsinane is fought and Macbeth is slain,
Malcolm finally receives his honor as the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. During the
aftermath of the bloody and bitter battle, Malcolm proclaims, "We shall not spend a large expanse of
time/Before we reckon with your several loves/And make us even with you. My thanes
and/kinsmen, /Henceforth be earls, the first that ever Scotland/In such an honor named" (V. viii. 72–
76). Malcolm has finally returned and proved his loyalty to his country by leading the battle against
Macbeth, and he is rewarding those who have also been consistently loyal. Their loyalty has a

thank God, averted. Vietnam was also brewing and none of us knew where that even was in the
world.

Japan. The park in Tokyo has very little differences from the American Magic Kingdoms. Tokyo's
success with like change from the American parks might have led Disney executives to the
misguided belief that cultural differences would not affect the success of Euro Disney. But Tokyo
and Paris have some pretty critical differences. Tokyo not only has a higher concentrated population

Japan, as a country, tends to embrace American culture much more readily than the French. The cold
winters on Paris were identified as a potential problem but when asked in a meeting if Europeans

Japanese and Paris winters vary greatly. Paris has 3 times as many rainy days. And the average highs
during winter are 5 degrees warmer in Tokyo than in Paris.[13] When opening a vacation destination
it seems obvious to understand the vacation habits of the target audience. This is by far the biggest

In December of 2015, a group of friends and I gathered our backpacks and decided to spend 24
hours in Denver. Thanks to Frontier Airlines, we were able to secure $30 round trip flights out of

I had heard a lot of good things about Snooze so I was definitely excited to try it. It did not
disappoint at all. The drinks were great. OH MY GOSH!!! The PearSpritz was where it was at.
Think bubbles, pear, earl grey tea, and soda. YUMMOOOOO! The food was delicious! We feasted
on a cinnamon roll pancake courtesy of Snooze that was nothing short of heaven in the form of

The National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) Aviation Accident Database lists over six dozen
reports in the past 20 years where flight crew fatigue was determined to be a contributing factor in
the accident. This constitutes an average of over three accidents per year as a result of flight crew
fatigue. The crash of American Airlines Flight 1420 in Little Rock, Arkansas, on 01 June 1999 cited
impaired crew performance resulting from fatigue as being the most prevalent of three factors
leading to the disaster. After touchdown, the MD–82 failed to stop before the end of the runway and
struck part of the ILS localizer array, plowed through a chain link security fence, passed over a rock
embankment into a flood plain, and collided with the approach lighting system structure before
coming to a rest. The captain and 10 passengers were killed, and the plane was completely destroyed
by landing impact forces and a post crash fire. The accident investigation revealed that the crew was
completing the third and final leg of a duty day that had begun in Chicago 13 hours earlier. A 2006
survey of short haul pilots revealed that 75% believed they had fatigue bad enough to be considered
severe while operating an aircraft. When comparing to the previous two years, 81% reported that
their fatigue while on duty had worsened. In addition, the pilots stated that their general overall
health, including physical and psychological, had been negatively impacted (Jackson & Earl, 2006).

Robert Nixon was an African–American serial killer who confessed to five murders and multiple assaults in Chicago and Los Angeles from 1936 to 1938. He was born on June 16, 1919, in the small town Tallulah, Louisiana. The press gave Nixon the nickname "Brick Moron" after he confessed to the "brick bat murders" (Arney). Edna Worden, her 12–year–old daughter, Rose Valdez, Elizabeth Rice, and Zoe Damrell were a few of his many victims. After Nixon was arrested, he was sentenced to death and electrocuted on June 15, 1939 (Patillo). In the Lewiston Daily, June Arney wrote that Nixon broke into a woman's home in Chicago in 1936 and looted her house before beating her to death with his "famous" brick. Nixon initially denied having any connection with the killings, but the Los Angeles Police's fingerprint evidence proved him wrong. During his trial, he eventually confessed to raping and murdering Anna Kuchta in 1937 and assaulting at least seventeen other women. However, he blamed his accomplice, Earl Hicks, for the murder of Johnson during his trial. Hicks, who was also under arrest, put the blame for Johnson's murder solely on Nixon. Nixon's defense that his accomplice had killed the woman failed, and the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that they both were equally responsible for this murder.
