What kind of media
institution might distribute
your media product and why?
 Picturehouse is a very arthouse based cinema, showing films like:
High Rise, Marguerite andThe Pearl Button. This would be the
ideal institution to distribute our film as it is only a small film with
minimal budget. This fits into the vision of Picturehouse and would
be the perfect film for them to distribute.
 Picturehouse also only has 23 cinemas across England with many
of them based in London. This therefore makes them easily
accessible for our film as they are looking for good arthouse films
which will attract the niche audience that Picturehouse thrives
upon.
 With Picturehouse being a British distributor, they would be more
likely to invest in our film as they invest in many ‘grass root
projects’ meaning they would spend more money on our film
making it the best it possibly can be.
 Finally Picturehouse creates its own films which means it knows
what good, unique films looks like. This would enhance our film
and would provide a future partner when making other films.
 Universal Studios, owned by Comcast, is a very mainstream
distributor who distribute a variety of blockbuster and arthouse
films. This means they make lots of money from the amount of
films they show and therefore would be able to spend lots of
money on the marketing of our film, which would make it more
popular in the long run.
 Also with Universal being a huge part in the distributing of larger
films such asThe Purge, Neighbours andWarcraft they will have a
vast amount of knowledge on how to distribute our film. This will
increase the publicity of our film and will ultimately make it a
bigger success.
 Finally, with Universal being vertically and horizontally integrated,
it would allow us to use their resources in and out of their
company to make our film the best it can be.This would increase
the likeliness of the film having many views and therefore
Universal would put more money into the marketing of the film.
20th Century Fox is a huge distributor within the film industry,
distributing films such as X-MenApocalypse, Deadpool andThe
Revenant. This means with the 80 years experience 20th Century Fox
has, they would be able to distribute our film perfectly. This is
because they are very vertically integrated, working with other
companies to make a film the best it can be.This would make our
film very popular, very quickly, and would increase the views
dramatically if distributed through 20th Century Fox.
Also with 20th Century Fox being a huge part with many films, they
would know what to do to make sure our film gets enough publicity
to make it popular. This includes synergising with other companies
to increase the amount of marketing provided to our film and the
amount of budget we are able to use to enhance our film even
further. This therefore would make our film more successful, making
20th Century Fox a perfect distributor for our film.
 Film 4 would also be a perfect distributor as they are known for
taking on arthouse and not well known films. This is shown
through them taking on ‘A Field in England’ as they invested
money into this film and marketed it on their channel. This is very
beneficial as they have channel 4 to market on plus their own
channel on Sky which would get us lots of publicity for our film.
This amount of publicity would provide us with many exhibition
possibilities increasing our overall revenue made from the film.
 Also with Film4 being both vertically and horizontally integrated,
they have the resources to make out film even better. This
includes making deals with the BFI (British Film Industry) like they
did with ‘A Field in England’ increasing the amount of money that
is able to be put into our film.
 StudioCanal is a British, independent distributor who distributed
37% of British films in 2014.This means they would not only know
what they have to do to make our film more successful, but also
have the experience needed to make things happen for our film.
 StudioCanal are a very arthouse based distributor, helping
distribute films such as the Sound Barrier, CherryTree and Knight
of Cups. This means they have lots of experience working with
arthouse films, and because we are a British film, they would be
more likely to invest more money into our film.
 Finally with StudioCanal being an independent distributor, they
will be vertically integrated, working with other companies to
make the distribution of our film the best it can be.This includes
making deals with the BFI (British Film Industry) and other
companies to increase the amount of investment put into our film.
Overall…
From all of these distributors, we would choose Film4.This is
because they are vertically and horizontally integrated and would be
a perfect match for our film. This is because they have more
experience than the other companies and are a British-based
company so would be more likely to invest in a British film.
Furthermore, they have strong connections with other companies
such as the BFI and are more than capable to gain investment for
our film. Finally they have a variety of channels and connections to
market our film and make it as popular as it possibly can.
