2. The first shots we see of the music video is an old man
standing outside a house as seen on the left. The camera
then pans to the right where the old man is out of the shot,
the camera then pans back to the left where the old man is
replaced by artist Big Sean. This shot sets the tone for the
whole video and the whole message behind it.The old man
is supposed to represent an older version of Big Sean and is
meant to give off the message that you should make
decisions in life with the wisdom of an older version of
yourself. The house in the background and the location of
the shot is taken directly from the front cover of the album
which I have already analysed. So there is synergy between
the album cover and this music video. The lighting used in
the background and throughout the video also sticks to the
same colour scheme of the album front cover.
3. The next shots we see are of the old man character
again in what looks like to be the house we see in the
very first shot. He is seen to be on the phone to
someone which we assume to be Big Sean as it
connects later in the video. We then see some shots of
Big Sean on the street, this scene involves a lot of lip
syncing to the lyrics. As you can see in both the shots
the lighting has stayed consistent to the start of the
video and also uses similar lighting to the front of the
album cover.
4. The next shots we then see link to the previous
shots like I mentioned. We see the old man at a
phone box and then the shot changes and then
Big Sean is standing at the phone box. This again is
meant to represent the whole message of having
the wisdom of an old man and making the right
decisions which links to the album title ‘I Decided’.
I think that the shot represents that the old man is
Big Sean later in life and he is on the phone to
someone else telling them to make the right
decisions.
5. The shots following on from this show the artist Big
Sean walking in the middle of road, with a group of
oncoming people on motorbikes and quadbikes. They
are riding towards him which may link to the name of
the song ‘HalfwayOffThe Balcony’ and the fact the
artist may be having suicidal thoughts. During this clip
there is use of slow motion camera shots, I think this is
used because in the song the tone of voice changes and
becomes a lot deeper so the slow motion kind of
matches this. There is also the use of lip syncing in this
scene with the use of the artist looking straight at the
camera for use of direct address.
6. Following on from the previous shot, we then see the
exact same shot that the music video opens up with.
However this time we first see Big Sean and not the old
man, the camera then pans to the right and then the
old man is standing there in Big Sean's position. This
creates synergy to the beginning of the video whilst
also giving off the message about picturing an older
version of yourself whilst your young. The very last shot
we see is then of Big Sean in a studio setting whilst
some dialogue takes place. The dialogue is basically of
someone telling Big Sean that his mum is calling him
and he replies saying he will call her back and then
shuts the door. That is how the video ends, after there
is just a black screen saying Big Sean and ‘I Decided’
which is a little promotion for the album.
