Media script
Introduction
The song that we used in our music video was Tyler the Creator; Yonkers. The genre of the
music video is hip-hop/rap and It is a very unique video and shows a true meaning behind.
They lyrics also show what kind of rapper Tyler is and what goes on in his head.
Conventions & Symbolic codes
The ways in which people use Goodwins rules as a convention in the music videos are that
they should follow the rules in how to structure a music video properly. However, in the rap
genre, this convention shouldn’t be followed as it’s not the way to be used.
Several conventions that our music video doesn’t follow are narrative, camera angles,
editing, transitions, the character is powerful, mise en scene.
In the music video, we don’t follow a narrative. Our video doesn’t display a narrative but the
music does. The music is talking about how one side of him is good and one side is bad and
he goes through a time where he’s getting worse because the worse side needs to come
out. However, we don’t show that through the video as the mise en scene is just Kelechi
rapping in one place.
This also contradicts the convention that is there as many rap videos have many different
locations but our video only has one. The location that we used is the drama studio in our
school. Our reasoning behind this one location is because we wanted a pure black back drop
and this is where we could use one. Also we wanted the video to be black and white and
having a black back drop made it easier for us to do.
The camera angles used in the shooting of the music video have gone against the
conventions as well as we have only used front on angles and the majority are close ups of
the body or the face. We have done this because it displays his facial expressions, anger and
it goes against the typical conventions of a rap video.
For the editing conventions of a music video, we went against the conventions of a normal
music video by just using the black and white filter. This goes against every convention of a
music video as no other music video is ever black and white. The only part of the music
video that isn’t black and white is when the instrumental kicks in and has some images and
videos of skeletons dancing and Kelechi showing what he is wearing.
We have not gone with the conventions of normal transitions in a rap music video. This is
shown when one clip goes into another. We have done this because in many other music
rap videos, it is also like this. The transitions in normal rap videos cuts to different shot types
whereas in our video it doesn’t cut because we only have one shot type.

One of the conventions that we have gone with, in the music video is how the character is
very powerful. We have shown this by the shot types and the types of clothes that he is
wearing in the video. His facial expressions and stance in the video shows that he is very
powerful and doesn’t care about what he says. This is shown by all the swearing and rude
words in the song.
The mise en scene used in the music video is another convention that we agreed with in our
music video. We used hand cuffs and a chain in the video which displayed that Kelechi was
isolated and hurt. Other than that we didn’t use any other props. This shows that we didn’t
agree with the convention the whole time in the music video as he only had the hand cuffs
and chain for verse 1. The costumes used however was dark clothing different brands. One
of the brands first used in verse 1 was a T-shirt which is labelled “supreme” This is a heavily
popular skate brand which is affiliated with the genre of rap music. This is well known as
many music rap artists wear this brand such as Skepta, A$AP Rocky and many more.
The relationship between the music and visuals showed that whenever there was a beat
drop, there was a change of tempo in the video and made it look as good as possible. Also,
Kelechi used a lot of hand movements in the video that related to what Tyler was saying in
the song. This shows that we acted out what he says which looks a lot better in the video as
its more visual for the people watching.
Verse 1
In verse 1, we decided to shoot the video in the drama studio with the black back drop to
get the effect of rapping in a dark place. This was our choice because the song was dark so
the location and back drop went with it. The clothing that kelechi wore was a black supreme
motion logo t-shirt and black jeans. This was good as when we went to edit the video and
use the black and white effect, it looked better than we thought it was as the logo on the t-
shirt was pure white and the t-shirt was jet black. The editing used in verse 1 was some sort
of static and a red colour correction that goes across the screen when Tyler says “no I’m
not” This shows Tyler’s alter ego taking over him. There is a lot of blur used and there are
bumps that looks as if the screen is shaking when there is a beat drop. Some of the video in
verse 1 goes from normal pace to fast pace when kelechi moves his head or does a hand
movement. This shows the type of music that we are doing as it’s a fast paced tempo. There
are no transitions in this verse apart from the free hand camera movement.
Instrumental (1)
In the instrumental, we decided to put some clips of different things to make an effect of
what the music video was about. An example of this is the skeleton turning around in a
circle and the words OWGKTA going across the screen. This is meant to confuse the
audience as it is already a confusing video and they don’t know what’s going on.

Verse 2
In verse 2, the editing is shown when the lyrics say “Jesus called, he said he’s sick of the
disses, I told him to quite bitching, this isn’t a fucking hotline” An image of Jesus on the
phone then pops up with writing underneath quoting “I am your creator…. Tyler” This Is
contradicting Tyler’s name, Tyler the creator as Jesus is saying he’s the creator of Tyler.
In this verse, Tyler talks about how he watches children’s cartoons and does drugs which is
something that doesn’t go together so it confuses the audience that is listening to the
music. He says a line in the song that quotes “I’m not gay, I just wanna boogie to some
Marvin” This is a play on words as he is referencing to Marvin Gaye. Near the end of verse 2,
Tyler starts rapping about his hatred for Bruno mars and B.O.B. Referencing to the song, he
wants to “stab Bruno mars in his goddamn oesophagus” and “crash that fucking aeroplane
that the nigga faggot B.O.B was in”
Instrumental (2)
In the second instrumental, there are close ups shown of writing on Kelechi’s hand, the
clothes that he is wearing and Kelechi looking angry while taking of his hand cuffs. After all
of this, it transitions from Kelechi’s body to his face for Verse 3.
Verse 3
In verse 3, there are many close ups and panning shots of Kelechi rapping while standing up.
Words saying “They say success is the best revenge” pop up in the middle of the screen one
after each other. This shows the audience that Tyler knows that working hard is the best
way to get revenge on the people that hated on him and said he couldn’t make it in rap.
The end of the verse shows Kelechi aka Tyler staring into the camera as it blurs around him
and the video ends with the word “dead” with a pitch black screen.
