The music video for "Savin' Me" by Nickelback tells a narrative story. A man walking in New York City is almost hit by a bus but is saved by a stranger. He notices people have timers above their heads counting down the time until their death. At the end, he saves a woman from being killed by a falling statue by pulling her out of a car. The video uses editing techniques like cuts and montages. It has a somber, dull color palette and mostly features casual outfits. Camera movements include long shots, close-ups, and point-of-view shots from the main character's perspective. The lead singer is prominently featured and lit to stand out from the other band members
3. Narrative
The narrative starts with a man who is just roaming the streets of which to
appears to be New York city. When the man is walking, he’s about to cross a
road where he almost get’s hit by a bus and is saved by an unknown man. This is
the first piece of action that can relate to the song title “Savin’ me”. During the
music video, the main man explores and looks at people who have a timer
above their head which indicates how long the person has left to live. The
character is obviously confused to what is going on as he’s always searching for
an answer to what’s going on in his own world. Towards the end of the music
video, the main character that is acting on the screen finds a woman who’s
about to die and pulls her back from being killed by a falling statue that hits the
car. The main purpose of the narrative is telling people that if someone does
something for you, you should repay them back with something just as equal or
you owe them something as equal.
4. Editing
Editing that is used in the music video consists of a lot of cuts. Another part
that has been added into the music video are the timers about the peoples head
in the video. The timers about the peoples head show how long the people have
long to live. Another edit that has been used in this music video is a montage of
shots. There are quite a lot of fast cuts throughout the music video.
5. Mis en scene
The mis en scene that is used in the music video is very formal and every day
like. The clothing that is used on the main character shows that it is modern and
a smart casual look. Not only does the man at the music video is focused on
narrative wise, the main band Nickelback are also dressed casually and smart
and there isn’t many props that actually show Nickelback are a rock genre band
but we know they are due to the instrumental and sound that is used in the
music video.
Also in the music video, the weather of the video is dull and boring colours
which could relate to a sad mood of the song. The colours that are mostly used
are blacks and dark blues which relates to mood of the song.
6. Camera Movement
There is a range of camera movements and techniques that are used in the
music video. The music video starts with a lot of long shots to allow the
audience to have full awareness of the atmosphere of where the music video is
being shot (a main busy city). There’s also a lot of close ups of the characters
facial reactions and the band as well as the main singer. Not only is there a lot of
close ups of the band and the characters facial reactions in the music video,
there’s also POV shots of the character walking down the street looking at
everyone who has a timer above their head.
7. Star
The main singers image captures the audience the most. He is the one that is
dressed the best, and the only one with a complete close-up of his face with a
interesting angle which stands out from the other shots in the music video. The
lighting is a lot brighter on him, allowing his face to be memorable and more
important and famous looking than the others presented. The star will easily
become promoted from this music video, because of the use of editing within
it. When the band is shown, it starts off dark, and there are only just medium
shots of the less main singers, however the main star of he video is first
presented with a long shot, showing his fame and body posture. Also, he makes
eye contact all the time, his eyes are never taken off the camera, showing he is
professional and the main singer. The mise-en-scene for the main singer is very
bright and noticeable compared to the others in the band. The singer has more
style, and this is well captured with the clothes, and the neat professional look
of his hair, which makes him the one who the audience will focus on most. The
eye connection the main singer gives makes him look confident and gives him a
strong image.
