2. ONLINE ASSESSMENT
ASSESSMENT:-
Any kind of a variety of procedures used to obtain information
about student performance includes- traditional paper and
pencil test as well as extended responses of authentic tasks(e.g.
laboratory experiments).
Assessment answers the questions, "how well does the
individual perform”.
The term assessment is used to mean the same as evaluation.
ONLINE ASSESSMENT:-
Online Assessment is the use of computers and computer
software to assess learners work.
It is the process used to measure certain aspects of information
for a set purpose where the assessment is delivered via a
computer connected to a network.
Most often the assessment is some type of educational test.
3. Instant and detailed feedbacks as well as flexibility of
location and time are just two of the many benefits
associated with online assessment.
There are many resources available that provide online
assessment, some are free of charge and others that charges
fees or require a membership.
Online quiz maker, GATE (Graduate Aptitude test in
Engineering), GRE (Graduate record Examinations), Science
Talent Search, SOF (Science Olympiad Foundation), Intel
Science Programme, Google Science Fair, NTA NET etc.
are the important online evaluation tests.
This method provides multiple benefits to learners, teachers
and administrators.
4. Use of text, sound and video means that questions and
portfolios are clearer and more detailed.
Results can be accessed within a short period of time and
include helpful insights and storage of forms and papers is
needed
Implementing Online Assessment:-
For online assessment to be implemented effectively the
instructor must have a solid understanding of how
assessment fits into the scheme of course development
(Palloff & Pratt-2009).
Instructors need to understand the learning outcomes (i.e,
what students should be able to know or do by the end of
the lesson), their importance in the learning process , and
how to achieve them. (Pallof & pratt-2009)
Online assessment should be ongoing and both graded and
non-graded.
5. Online assessment should involve student collaboration
Online assessment should have a plan for technical
difficulties.
TYPES OF ONLINE ASSESSMENT:-
E-testing
Computer -based assessment (CBA)
E-portfolios
1. E-testing:- It is like traditional testing but is carried
out using a computer rather than pen and paper. It is
also referred to as on-screen tests.
Benefits of e-testing are:-
Register learners quickly.
Access learners when they are ready, anytime of the day or
night.
Get results instantly after completion and analyze within
minutes.
6. 2. Computer-based Assessment:- Computer-based evaluation
offers an alternative to local assessment and external
moderation. Learners work on assignments as usual, but
their files are assessed via computer rather than a local
assessor marking printouts and sending them to an OCR
examiner moderator.
Benefits of computer-based Assessment:-
Completely automated marking with no local assessment needed .
Results and feedback on performance within minutes.
Virtually paperless process and no postage required.
Completely free, so there is no extra cost to the Centre.
3. E-portfolios:- An electronic portfolio, is a storage area, where
learners upload and submit their work and tutors and
assessment personal view and mark work. Unlike traditional
paper based methods, e-portfolios provide much richer and
varied ways of recording and presenting evidence. Learners can
submit a range of file formats including word processed
documents, spreadsheets, images, video and sound files.
7. The content of an e-portfolio can then be shared with
others. They can be searched and viewed from different
perspectives and enable learners to access their work at any
time.
All you need to run most e-portfolio systems on a PC or
Laptop with internet access(preferably broadband).
Benefits of e-portfolios:-
Save time
Save money
No more lever arch files or printing
Create media rich portfolio with images, sound and video.
A safe place for learners to collect, save and reflect on their
work.
Portable
Accessible
Save on postage costs for remote moderated portfolios.
8. ONLINE VS TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT:-
“Despite its popularity , online learning is not without its
challenges. As instructors are finding their way in the
online environment and paying more attention to good
course design and delivery, they are discovering that
traditional forms of assessment of student work- such
as test and quizzes- that serve them well in the face-
to-face classroom may not work quite as well online”.
(Palloff & Pratt, 2009).
Online and traditional assessments can be similar, but
implementing them online, especially if for the first time,
requires ample planning.
Ideally the assessment process informs the teacher and the
learner about learner progress and at the same time,
contributes to the learning process.
9. In theory good assessment:
Occurs during a learning activity.
Measures meaningful learning outcomes.
Does so in a fair, reliable, accurate way.
Is easy to administer, score and interpret.
Informs the teacher about student performance and how
they are interpreting course experiences.
Results in meaningful feedback to the learner.
TRADITIONAL ONLINE
Exams

11. Benefits of online assessment
Instant and detailed feedback
Flexibility of location and time
Recycling of test materials
Basic sites are free
Conveniences for students in terms of time and place.
Disadvantages of online assessment
Requires an internet connection
Requires computer literacy
Initial creation of tests may be more complex
Time must be spent for learning the tool
Fewer types of questions can be asked.
