• Staff identified that the DT rooms were uninspiring and not 
creative 
• We wanted to improve the overall feel of the rooms our students 
designed in 
• We became the client. Our project started from here…
A DESIGN PROCESS – THE BRIEF 
One of the most important features of any design based project is 
to have a brief, a set of guidelines/desires to focus the group 
involved and refer back to when needed. Our brief was… 
• Must improve the use of the Learning Space 
• Should be innovative and creative 
• Must consider students needs and abilities 
• Must be student led and developed - by the student for the 
student 
• Time and budget considerations also 
Our brief was then translated into a proposal that we delivered to 
Senior Leaders for consideration.
A DESIGN PROCESS – DESIGN STAGE 
Getting students involved – Expressions of interest via a letter sent 
to all students. 
Hi Guys 
I am looking for a group of representatives to meet as a committee to discuss and put 
together ‘Innovate and Creative’ ideas for changes to one of the Design Studios in the DTC. 
Dr Browning and Mr Andrews have accepted a proposal to be ‘revolutionary’ within this 
teaching space. Therefore, you have been nominated by your class teacher to be a member 
of this Design Committee and be a part of making history here at St. Pauls School. 
If you accept this invitation, I would firstly like you to forward me an email stating that you 
would like to be part of the committee so that your position can be recorded. 
The next stage is for you to attend a meeting during lunch time on Thursday (31st October 
2013) to meet with all the other members. There will be a range of students from Year 7 
through to Year 12, in specialist fields of Design Technology and Visual Arts. At this meeting 
we aim to outline the space which is going to be transformed plus give everyone the 
opportunity to present their ideas for this particular space. Also you may be interested in 
being ‘physically’ creative and volunteer to design/ paint on the walls over the course of the 
next couple of weeks? 
This is a very special and rare opportunity where you can be part of the community of St. 
Pauls and have a really hands-on effect on what you can create and use on daily basis. 
Hopefully this design space will be the first of many and will give you the ability to “create 
your own story” in a visual way.

About 30 students showed up from Yr7 to Yr12. 
Brainstorming – split into age varied groups – this was done on 
purpose, older students become mentors and are able to lead 
the groups further through their knowledge and experience.

Working in groups – collaboration – bouncing ideas – no wrong 
answers – all ideas are valid and worthwhile

We asked students to do homework – creating image boards of 
ideas to share with the group.

Divide the room into sections then bring ideas together as a group

• Teacher becomes the client – students must work as the designer 
getting feedback from the client 
• Ideas collated 
• Art teams came up with concepts and ideas from the designers 
• Constant collaboration, working with the groups, feedback– essential to 
the process 
• Students sourced their needs as required – materials, paints, process – 
further collaboration with DTC staff, Art staff Design groups etc

A DESIGN PROCESS – THE BRIEF One of the most important features of any design based project is to have a brief, a set of guidelines/desires to focus the group involved and refer back to when needed. Our brief was… • Must improve the use of the Learning Space • Should be innovative and creative • Must consider students needs and abilities • Must be student led and developed - by the student for the student • Time and budget considerations also Our brief was then translated into a proposal that we delivered to Senior Leaders for consideration.
  • 5. A DESIGN PROCESS – DESIGN STAGE Getting students involved – Expressions of interest via a letter sent to all students. Hi Guys I am looking for a group of representatives to meet as a committee to discuss and put together ‘Innovate and Creative’ ideas for changes to one of the Design Studios in the DTC. Dr Browning and Mr Andrews have accepted a proposal to be ‘revolutionary’ within this teaching space. Therefore, you have been nominated by your class teacher to be a member of this Design Committee and be a part of making history here at St. Pauls School. If you accept this invitation, I would firstly like you to forward me an email stating that you would like to be part of the committee so that your position can be recorded. The next stage is for you to attend a meeting during lunch time on Thursday (31st October 2013) to meet with all the other members. There will be a range of students from Year 7 through to Year 12, in specialist fields of Design Technology and Visual Arts. At this meeting we aim to outline the space which is going to be transformed plus give everyone the opportunity to present their ideas for this particular space. Also you may be interested in being ‘physically’ creative and volunteer to design/ paint on the walls over the course of the next couple of weeks? This is a very special and rare opportunity where you can be part of the community of St. Pauls and have a really hands-on effect on what you can create and use on daily basis. Hopefully this design space will be the first of many and will give you the ability to “create your own story” in a visual way. I look forward to your response The Design Team
  • 6. A DESIGN PROCESS – DESIGN STAGE About 30 students showed up from Yr7 to Yr12. Brainstorming – split into age varied groups – this was done on purpose, older students become mentors and are able to lead the groups further through their knowledge and experience.

A DESIGN PROCESS – DESIGN REFINEMENT • Teacher becomes the client – students must work as the designer getting feedback from the client • Ideas collated • Art teams came up with concepts and ideas from the designers • Constant collaboration, working with the groups, feedback– essential to the process • Students sourced their needs as required – materials, paints, process – further collaboration with DTC staff, Art staff Design groups etc
