Activity 3: Conditionals
Interaction: Whole class
Aim: To practice the “zero” and “first” conditional
Skill: Speaking, listening and reading
Grammar: The “zero” and “first” conditional
Preparation: Copy and cut up one conditional sentence for every
two students. There are twelve sentences on the worksheet
Time: 10-15 minutes
Procedure
1 Divide the students into two groups, A and B.
2 Give one If clause card to each student in Group A. Give one
Result clause card to each student in Group B.
3 Tell the students to read their card and to ask if there is any
vocabulary they don’t understand.
4 Tell the students that they have one half of a conditional
sentence and that they must find the person who has the other
half of their sentence. To do this they must walk around the
room and read their sentences to other students.
5 Give the students five to ten minutes to walk around and try to
find their partner.
6 When all the students have found their partner, ask them to form
a line facing their partner.
7 Ask each pair to read out their sentence. Ask the other students
to listen carefully and to say whether each sentence is correct.
8 If there’s time, you could read out the correct sentences (see
below).
Notes
• If there is an odd number of students in the class, give one card
to two weaker students and ask them to work together.
Options
• If you want to extend the activity, give each pair a few
minutes to think of an alternative ending for their
sentence. Ask pairs to say their new sentence.
