The Effects of Genetically Modified Organisms
In the recent years, Genetically Modified organisms (GMOs) have in numerous ways affected the
composition of our diets considering the fact that they have replaced our healthy and naturally
produced food with genetically altered food. These alterations have had significant effects on human
health and the society in general. These pesticide resistant foods are products of merging genes of
different species together through genetic engineering. When individuals consume these genetically
modified foods, they are at a high risk of contracting various diseases including terminal illnesses
such as cancer (Smith & Genetic Roulette 258). On numerous occasions individuals do not realize
that they are consuming these harmful toxins as they are infused into different foods without the
knowledge of consumers (Pence 153). Labelling of GMOs stands out as the perfect solution that will
help consumers differentiate foods with GMOs and those produced exclusively through natural
processes. Despite the existence of farmers who maintain traditional and natural farming practices,
those who choose involve GMOs in the production of their foods make more profits with less efforts
and time involved. This study seeks to advocate for the labelling of GMOs to create and promote
human awareness. Population To facilitate the study and develop a proper solution to the problem,
the research will sample 100 individuals from different sectors within the society. The students from

Invasives Vs Non-Invasives
Invasives versus non–invasives: Not all alien species are invasive. Many, such as honeybees, may be
considered beneficial to the environment and the economy. If a species hasn't had any record of
introduction to new habitats, it is nearly impossible to tell whether it will be dangerous or not. The
cane toad was introduced to Australia under the mistaken impression that it would only eat the
insects they hoped it would. Garlic mustard was introduced as an herb. The best practice is to simply
import as few new non–native species as possible. This also includes tightening all pathways of
introduction to prevent new introductions. Community outreach: A website will be created by the
local CISMA which will include information on invasives and

The Importance Of Environmental Education
In today's time of environmental distress, it is pertinent that children be educated on the
environment in order to instill attitudes of empowerment to change the world and optimism toward
the future. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, and countless other anthropogenic issues
threaten today's living species, and many animals have already lost the battle, proving that educating
youth on wildlife conservation is of utmost importance. Environmental education in children and
adolescents has always been a significant topic, as they hold the future of the Earth in their power.
Educators must be able to critically evaluate the effectiveness of their message to ensure their
intended outcomes and make appropriate modifications. Environmental education is based on the
five pillars of awareness, knowledge, attitude, skill, and participation. The United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization established these objectives in the Tbilisi
Declaration in order to ensure that environmental education around the world has similar goals,
which include promoting individuals to gain motivation to participate in the protection of the
environment (Garcia et. al., 2016). These intersections of environmental education can be integrated
into the curriculum of students in all grades and are effective in nurturing an appreciation and
concern for the environment (Cutter–Mackenzie et. al., 2014). Educational programs aim to spread
knowledge in order to inspire audiences to

The Social Responsibility Of Corporations Essay
Abstract
This paper explores the importance of social responsibility within corporations. This paper also
explores "The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits" by Milton Friedman and
his stance on social responsibility. Friedman believed that corporations should not waste money on
new initiatives if it was just to appease the public, especially if it went above what laws required.
Examples are shown how corporations must listen to the customer or it could hurt the profitability of
the corporation, with social media being a big tool to press issues. Also discussed are laws that
support socially responsible initiatives such as pollution reduction that direct and provide incentives
for businesses. Keywords: Milton Friedman, The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its
Profits, social media, social responsibility, Smuckers, GMO, genetically modified organisms, The
Pollution Prevention Act of 1990
The Goal of the Firm
According to Investopedia, Milton Friedman was an American economist and statistician known for
his strong beliefs in free–market capitalism. Friedman was also opposed to any government ran
programs that regulated policy that was used for the purpose of fueling business activity and
employment. In 1970, Friedman wrote an article labeled "The Social Responsibility of Business is
to Increase its Profits". The basic premise of the article was to argue that business should not worry
about social responsibility; rather

Environmental And Environmental Effects Of Invasive Species
THE EFFECT OF INVASIVE SPECIES: ELEPHANT EARS VERSUS IRISES INTRODUCTION
How much harm do invasive species actually create for the plants in their habitat? An invasive
species is a non–native plant, fungi, or animal that takes over a foreign ecosystem by manipulating
the environment and plants around them (Pysek and Chatry 2014). Invasive ecology focuses on
identifying the factors underlying the infiltration of the invasive species and the affects that result.
Each invasive species plays a specific role within the new community (Richardson and Pysek 2008).
Not only do these invasive species cause economic harm and harm to human health, but can also
affect the environment and the other plants inhabiting that ecosystem (Vila et. al 2011). Because of
this, society faces a major challenge trying to manage or kill off these invasive invaders. Rapid
action is the most beneficial way to manage this enemy invader. However, it is hard to recognize
when the invasive species actually inhabits the land. So, other efforts must be done to eradicate the
species including: digging or pulling it out, attempting to maintain the invasive species in a ... Show

measurements will be taken on April 12, 2016. Final measurements include: the length of the stem,
stem length from the korm, weight of the korm, steam weight without the leaves, and stem weights
with the leaves. To find the growth of each treatment, we will divide the final date by the initial data
collected. Specifically, our group will divide elephant ear growth by Iris growth. So, we will
compare the growths of the EI pots. If the proportional of elephant ear versus iris is bigge than 1,
this means that the Elephant ear grew larger than Iris. We can then input the data into the respectable

Pros And Cons Of Non Native Plants
Do you know the affects non native plants have on the Arizona landscape? There are many invasive
plants that are destroying our landscape . I'm going to be sharing the pros, and cons the non native
plants have on the Arizona landscape. In my opinion the spread of invasive plants is more harmful to
our native landscape than it is beneficial. A native plant is a plant that evolves in a particular area for
a long period of time. They also adapted to the weather change in that specific area, As well as
worked alongside other plants to provide habitat for wildlife. A non native plant is a plant that
originates from a particular place and was put some place else by accident. The dangers of having a
non native plant in a place in which it did not originate is harmful because our wildlife eat the native
plants and if a non native plant evolves in that area and the animals eat it there is no telling what
harmful side effects that specific plant will have on that animal. ... Show more content on

When fire prone invasive plant causes a fire the cycle of life including food, water, and shelter are
greatly impacted. Some animals aren't as affected by these fires as others are like reptiles who can
avoid some of the harmful effects of the fire because they can go underground. When the wildfire
spreads the animals left on the ground that don't flea can be extremely affected by the smoke of this
burning fire, some of these animals don't survive because they aren't able to flea or hide from the
fire. When the ones that flea try to come back there is nothing left for them to live off of essentially

Chemistry Lab And Organic Chemistry
After a harsh Wednesday due to Chemistry Lab and Organic Chemistry, I enjoy sitting in the patio
area of Cafe 1919 and enjoy a Panini along with a Caprese salad. Both the main dish and side
contain a fruit I once hated as a child. Tomato have always been the part of the burger I threw out,
the part of the salad I did not touch, the part I could never swallow. Even throughout high school, I
always hated tomatoes, but ever since I got to UCLA my love for this fruit exponentially grew out of
nowhere. One day as I was enjoying my usual Wednesday lunch, I wonder what gave these little
morsels such a juicy taste. Perhaps UCLA does but the best fruit and vegetables for their students,
perhaps the oil the tomatoes bathe in give it its rich taste, or perhaps we have those hidden GMO,
gentically modified organisms, that people argue over its stability. I search if there is any known
gentically altered tomatoes and the search engine directed me to links that talk about a product
known as the Flavr Savr. Interesting enough the product known as the Flavr Savr, which is a
gentically altered tomato is actually the first FDA approved GMO to hit to the market. After
discovering the first ever GMO my curious mind started asking questions that I needed to know. I
wonder what exactly is the Flavr Sav? When was it created? Who created it and how? Was there a
reason they chose to mess with the DNA of a tomato? How did people response to the first of many

Problems Associated With Globalization And The Ability Of...
With globalization and the ability to travel around the world comes the movement of many things,
including many plants and animals. However, the connectedness of the world allows non–native
species to be introduced to new habitats. The introduction of most species that become invasive is
"due to unintentional 'hitchhiking' through international trade, with invaders stowing away in ships,
planes, trucks, shipping containers, and packing materials, or arriving on nursery stock, unprocessed
logs, fruits, seeds, and vegetables" (McNeely, p. 1, 2001). The movement of organisms around the
world started with the earliest of colonists as they tried to recreate their homes and create a familiar
environment in newly discovered lands. Not all alien species are invasive and some are the basis of
modern agriculture, but the species that have become invasive have led to sometimes disastrous
repercussions and numerous extinctions.
If non–native species outcompete native organisms and use all the resources available, these
introduced organisms are called invasive species. Some plants or animals can be successfully
introduced into an ecosystem and adapt to coexist with the native species, but invasive species take
over the habitats and niches of native organisms. Invasive species spread rapidly and are not
controlled in the same way native species are because the predators or conditions that regulated the
growth of these species do not exist where they have been transplanted. These species

The Missouri Department Of Natural Resources Essay
Introduction The Missouri Department of Natural Resources was established in 1974 to protect
natural resources, natural commodities, provide residential support, and recreational opportunities
(Missouri Department of Natural Resources About Us). This department owns and operates The
Division of State Parks (Missouri State Parks About the State Park System). It oversees the
regulation and protection of all Missouri State Parks (Missouri State Parks About the State Park
System). Indian Creek Wild Area is a specially protected area within Trial of Tears State Park in
Cape Girardeau County, Missouri (Missouri State Park Designated Wild Areas). It was established
in 1978 for research, outdoor activities, and instructional lectures (Missouri State Park Designated
Wild Areas). Indian Creek Wild Area occupies 526.1 ha of land within the park (Missouri State Park
Designated Wild Areas). The park itself is located east, off Highway 177 and west from the
Mississippi River. The park sits parallel to the Mississippi River. The wild area is in the northern
hemisphere of the park, just above Vancil Hollow and contains numerous hiking trails that run
through the it. The woodlands of Indian Creek Wild Area are composed mostly of Liriodendron
tulipifera (tulip poplar), Carya (hickory) and Quercus (oak) in the uplands and Salix (willow),
Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum), and Platanus (sycamore) in the basins, along with a variety of

The Pros And Cons Of GMO
Should GMO's be labeled in the United States? A GMO is a genetically modified organism that goes
through the process of genetic engineering. This is when genes of one organism are extracted,
altered, and then artificially placed into another organism to then grow. We typically see GMOs in
the food we consume every day. These foods include fruits and vegetables, however the most
common organisms that are genetically engineered include, corn, soy, and cotton. It is ultimately the
unnatural cross breeding of plants, animals, bacteria, and virus genes (Non–GMO Project). But now
why is there a debate for placing a label to notify consumers of GMOs in their foods? Do we know
the potential harm that GMOs can cause? We have the right to know what we are putting into our
bodies and what is found in our everyday foods. So why do we use GMOs? Well there is a "So–
called advantage" with these products that it costs less to produce and they are better quality. But do
we know if they're better quality or our bodies? There's not enough research to prove that the human
race and other organisms have suffered dire consequences from consuming these genetically
engineered foods. However there are some linkages that link GMOs to some health problems,
environmental damage, and farmer/consumer rights. In the United States, we are not yet up to date
with other countries one being the metric system we have not yet switched to and the labeling of
GMOs being required. In three hundred regions

Golden Rice : Pro, Pros And Cons Of Golden Food
There are, debatably, pros and cons of creation in any zone of life. Especially with Golden Rice,
there are numerous nations that appear to be supporters of the Golden Rice. With biogenetic
building of rice, there is an expansion underway, financial incitement, and in addition, a reduction in
starvation and increment of beta–carotene. Many research has been conducted and debated on as to
whether Golden Rice increases the sufficient effects of human nutrition.
To begin, Golden Rice provides beta–carotene to individuals that are vitamin A deficient. The
amount of beta–carotene in Golden rice does not harmfully affect the human body. Golden Rice can

This says a lot to me since I am a person that has a hypersensitive response to sustenance. With
things being what they are, what reason would I need to hurt myself by enabling them to consume
this rice?
The genetically modified organism (GMOS) refers to the production of a crop or an animal whose
genetic constitution has been altered by use of the biotechnology to favor the development of the
physiological characteristics, which facilitates the production of the desired yields (Beyer et al.
2002). The creation of the genetically modified organisms includes the utilization of the logical
techniques such as conceptive cloning and the recombinant DNA innovation.
Golden rice has been altered through genetic building to create a type of vitamin A, known as beta–
carotene. Beta–carotene is in charge of the golden yellow color of the rice. White rice does not
process the beta–carotene and subsequently, does not have the golden color. At the point when the
carotenoids in the golden rice are expended, they are either stored into fat tissue or changed over
into vitamin A. The rice contains characteristic greasy lipids which help in the assimilation of its
carotenoids by the body. Different advantages of the golden rice incorporate the arrangement of the
adequate vitality to the body. The vitality originates from starch contained inside the rice. The
qualities that are in charge of the

The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering
There are multiple negative perceptions associated with genetic engineering. A variety of people
assume that all which is genetically engineered causes more harm than good. Because of these
misconceptions, those who see them as harmful do not use them, limit their production, and do what
they can to stop genetic engineering with anti–GMO movements (Clancy, C.A., 2016). This results
in people not benefitting from the seemingly infinite array of positives that erupt from genetic
engineering, specifically the genetic engineering of bacteria, also known as the genetic engineering
of microorganisms or GEM. GEM proves to be useful in many fields; not only does it aid humans,
but also the environment and other living organisms (Kulshreshtha, S., 2013 ). GEM has produced
astonishing medical advances, such as the creation of insulin to battle diabetes, interferon alpha to
fight Hepatitis C, and Factor VIII and Factor IX to help cure hemophilia (H. Almeida, M.H. Amaral,
P. Lobão, 2011). Additionally, the spread of diseases can be limited, such as the elimination of the
dangerous malaria parasite by implementing a strain of bacteria into the mosquito (Wang, S., Ghosh,
K. A., Bongio, N., Stebbings, A. K., Lampe, J. D., Jacobs–Lorena, M., 2012). There are doubts
about whether these processes are good because people believe that the bacteria can somehow
escape and damage ecosystems. In order to combat this, scientists have found ways to ensure that
bacteria do not survive outside of

The Conservation Of The Feral Pigs
INTRODUCTION This model addresses the pathways in which ecological drivers are having
significant influence over the natural systems of Hawaii. Climate change is one of the most pressing
issues of our time; Hawaii has not been exempt from the effects. We're witnessing a large increase in
sea levels, which can lead to the erosion of the small islands and eventually displace humans.
Climate change also is influencing the way we manage forests, to promote carbon sequestration we
must focus on managing forests for sustainable regeneration. Forest regeneration also influences
other ecosystem services like cultural, regulating, provisioning and supporting services. Specifically
dealing with the presence of feral pigs we see different drivers causing the increase in population
and disturbances. Cultural drivers are an issue. There is debate over control methods for the feral
pigs has been gridlocked between conservation biologists/environmentalists, hunters and managers.
Public hunts have been highly encouraged due to low costs, but hunters are afraid of snare traps that
could hurt them and potentially kill their dogs. Conservationists want to restore native vegetation.
Managers are seeking public approval and effective means of control. Overall, not enough is being
done and human relations are being strained. This is reducing cultural services from the land
immensely. Another driver is changing land use and development, which is highly stressing for the
ecosystems.

How White Tailed Deer Affect Native And Invasive Plant...
How White–tailed Deer Effect Native and Invasive Plant Species Populations in the Eastern United
States.
Introduction
Whitetail deer have come to be known as a keystone species, species known for affecting other
organisms in an ecosystem. Deer are known as a keystone species in forest habitats such as in the
Eastern United States because they are capable of destroying potential forest habitat of other
organisms (McShea and Rappole, 1992). For example, deer have a negative impact on forest
ecosystems by trampling and over browsing over vegetation, without creating any habitat for other
native species. Throughout the eastern United States, the abundance of white–tailed deer
(Odocoileus virginianus) has increased dramatically over the last century (Taggart and Long, 2015).
Population increases could be due to increased habitat fragmentation from land development,
reduced predators and/or hunting pressure. Individual deer ranges varied during seasonal times, deer
movements are usually greatest during the peak breeding months from late fall through winter
(Williams et. al, 2012). Regardless of the cause, high deer densities can have significant effects on
plant communities such as plant decay and/or even death. Deer consume a large amounts of plant
biomass (leaves, buds, flowers and fruits) and directly reduce the growth, reproduction, and survival
of herbaceous and woody plant species (Shen et. al, 2016). The impacts of white–tailed deer on
forests along the Eastern United

The handler of the pet can be harmed by their animal during care or transport. "The HSUS [Humane
Society of the United States] reports that it's not unusual for exotic pets to be malnourished and
stressed; they also tend to develop behavioral issues that can lead to bites and attacks" ("Facts about
the Exotic Pet Trade"). When provoked or pressured, humans tend to attack each other in instances
as massive as wars to as little as a fight over the last cookie. Animals react similarly when stressed
or placed into an uncomfortable situation. Because of this, attacks are more common with wild
animals as they are not accustomed to the environment they are so brutally placed into. Physical
force is probably the first thought that comes to mind when harm is mentioned, yet one of the largest
factors contributing to the general harm of handlers happens to be disease. People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA) one of the most well known animal rights organizations, believes
disease is a large risk to handlers. "Seventy–five percent of all new infectious diseases originate
from non–human animals" ("Inside the Exotic Animal Trade"). Different animals carry different
diseases, and handlers of these animals are more susceptible to various uncommon household
illness'. Wounds inflicted by animals contribute largely to the possibility of diseases. "Animal bites
can result in serious injuries and potential exposure to zoonotic diseases such as rabies. It is
estimated that about 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year, and about 1
in 5 of those people require medical attention" ("You and Your Family"). This statistic proves how
diseases contracted from animals can affect humans. Dogs are popular pets in the United States,
however with canines inflicting harmful diseases, the threat wild animals pose is alarmingly even
greater. Sickness' can transfer back and forth between the species

Transgenic Fungi Malaria is an infectious disease carried by mosquitos that affects humans.
Genetically engineered fungus with genes for anti–malarial antibodies from humans may be useful
in combating the disease. Pesticides already in use are becoming ineffective. This method could also
combat insect and tick–bug diseases. The researchers made this fungus by using an existing fungus
that targets mosquitos and genetically modifying it to have genes for malarial antibodies. The
antibody attacks the parasite which causes malaria. 3 separate groups of mosquitos which carried the
parasite which caused malaria. One of the groups was sprayed with the fungus, another group
sprayed with the wild type fungus and the last group weren't altered. Only a quarter of the mosquitos
sprayed with the transgenic fungus still carried the parasite, and there was a 95% drop in parasite
numbers on the mosquitos that still carried the parasite. 87% of the mosquitos sprayed with the
wild–type fungus still carried the parasite. 94% of the mosquitos from the group that wasn't sprayed
carried the parasite. 240 million people are infected with malaria through insects carrying parasites

Persuasive Essay On Wild Animals
With nearly millions of animals dying each year from being captive, or endangered species being
hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of
beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the
lack of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals
from having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals
imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and
frustration, which is risking animals overall health and well being. These morally unacceptable and
cruel actions of retaining wild animals in captivity is certainly wrong. ... Show more content on

Zoos regularly waste millions of dollars constructing statues, and building gift shops and concession
stands. This money would do far more to help animals if it were spent on habitat preservation
projects. While the Lincoln Park zoo has free admissions all year long, people take the advantage to
go and watch animals perform tricks, paying no attention to their dangerous and insufficient living
environment.
Proposal
The Lincoln Park Zoo should be banned in order to protect animals from unsuitable enclosures and
inadequate living conditions. Many of us feel the obligation to give animals the same rights as
ourselves, so the idea of closing this zoo will prevent the capturing of wildlife and help end the
miseries of several animals. By shutting down the Lincoln Park Zoo, numerous controversial issues
and struggles will brought to attention on how to care for captive wildlife, or where animals would
go without a home. However, if public zoos planned to close within the next year, hundreds of
animals that are currently residing in the exhibits will be transported to an animal care center and
then released back into the wildlife. This would allow for animals to roam free without being
enclosed within a limited space, and be able to enjoy their natural habitat. Getting rid of cages
reinforces the idea of interacting with animals and biodiversity in parks and reserves in a natural
way.

This article also lets the reader know of the possibilities that GMOs can be used to prevent diseases
by being infused with vaccines. They also may be able to remove the genes that trigger people's
allergies.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also educates those who inquire about
the potential disadvantages of GMOs. For instance there is no conclusive evidence one way or
another if Modifying an organism can destabilize it. The long term effect of genetic modification
could cause potential mutations that harm the plant and could in turn possibly harm the animal that
consumes it. Genetically modified organisms could also breed with native species and create a lack
of biological diversity on the planet because they would be damaging. This would happen because
GMOs are hardy plants that take over native species. This invasive species could produce more
food, but it has the potential to be detrimental to the environment as well. The invasive species
would be a problem if something were to happen to the GMO that would make it inedible or kill it
and get rid of a large portion of our food supply. Another potential harm that can come from

Genetically Modified Organisms And Its Impact On The World
With 92% of corn, 94% of soybeans, and 94% of cotton being genetically modified and with
upwards of 75% of processed foods containing GMOs according to the Center of Food Safety,
GMOs are clearly a very important topic. According to Whole Foods, GMOs or genetically
modified organisms are organisms whose DNA has been altered. The reason for the creation of
GMOs was for the purpose of increasing plant productivity by engineering them to resist certain
diseases, produce their own pesticides, etc. and is mostly prevalent in North America ("GMO").
According to the Genome News Network, in 1973, Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen were the first
to accomplish the direct manipulation of genes using genetic modification ("Genetics"). Because of
GMOs are such a new technology, there has been some debate over the safety of GMOs. Genetically
Modified Organisms have been considered to be controversial; however, they have had an overall
positive impact on the world.
Firstly, GMOs have positively impacted the world because they have improved food production.
According to Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences researchers, "The genetically modified
plants had stronger flower clusters that produced more seeds, meaning a greater yield of rice per
plant––close to 50 more percent by weight. And the starch content of those grains of rice was about
10 percent higher. In total, above–ground weight increased by about 30 percent, while below–
ground weight decreased by 35 percent" (qtd. in Johnson).

Animals Are Dogs And Cats
Most people are families with domesticated animals as pets. The most common pets are dogs and
cats. However, some people want to own exotic animals instead of normal animals. They pick what
they want, but they actually don't pay attention to an outcome later. There have three outcomes that
people should not own exotic animals which are bad for animals, bad for owners, and bad for
environment. In the Steps to Writing Well textbook by Jean Wyrick, there has an article that supports
people who adopt wild animals and the name is Zuana Kukol's Opposing View: Let People Own
Exotic Animals. Based on that, the author gives a message that people should be allowed to adopt
any animals because it helps animals stay away from extinction, everybody should have freedom to
pick any species of wild, and exotic animals have low numbers of harmful per year. This is also a
way to eliminate extinction because exotic animals are captive animals, so they will be backup when
animals go extinct. Moreover, the article shows the record of fatalities per year by captive animals
only around four people per year. Meanwhile, traffic accidents are around one hundred per day. The
writer also supports with emphasis sentences at the end on why people have the freedom to pick
their favorite car but not animals. To sum up, the author writes this article because of supporting
people who want to own exotic animals as pets. First of all, owning wild animals as pets is a bad
decision for animals' life later on.

Factors And Effects Of Invasive Species
Introduction Invasive species have a serious effect on native wildlife, representing the second major
threat to biodiversity after the destruction of habitat (IUCN/SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group
(ISSG)). The introduction of alien species is mainly a consequence of past human actions, especially
after the 1950s when international trade increased. Besides the spread due to international trade,
invasive species were often introduced for aquaculture and sports purpose (Grosholz 1996; Gozlan
et al. 2010).
Non–native species often outperforms indigenous species in their habitat directly by competitive
exclusion, niche displacement, high reproductive rate, predation, fewer natural enemies in the new
environment, long life span and their good dispersal (Manchester and Bullock, 2000; Cuda et al,
2015; San Sebastian et al, 2015; GB non–native species secretariat, 2017). Furthermore, invasive
species are more skilled predators and have a wide range of plasticity regarding food consumption
and shelter preferences (Gherardi and Acquistapac 2007; Olsson et al. 2009). Frequently, introduced
species are vectors of pathogens and parasites and in the past have caused a rapid decline of native
population due to their susceptibility to new disease (GB non–native species secretariat). Apart from
the effect on biodiversity, non–native species caused difficulties in countries budget, where in the
UK direct annual costs of invasive species are nearly £1.7 billion (Hulm, 2009; GB

The Impact of Invasive Species on Ecosystems Essay
Influence on ecosystems range from human causes like the bulldozing of a forest to natural causes
like a fire or a flood. In recent times, the introduction and spread of invasive species has transformed
native communities rapidly and, in some cases, created irreversible damages. In the Earth's history,
changes have often occurred in the ecosystems. For example, glaciers and the retreat of glaciers
cause wide–spread changes. However, although change is a constant in ecosystems, animals and
habitats often cannot adapt to the rapid alterations of non–natural stresses. Harm to the environment
from the introduction of invasive species occurs through changes in the habitat and declines in the
native species. Invasive species ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

facilitated by earlier invaders (2000). Damage to these communities, then, can be seen both in
cumulative effects and in a cycle of self–reinforcement. Although pristine environments are still at
risk from invasion, this positive feedback loop makes habitats already with a disturbance by exotics
even more vulnerable to other invasions. With the increasing amount of disturbed habitats, invasive
species could soon become the leading cause of ecological degradation (Soulé & Orians, 2001).
Invasive species can alter habitats in a number of ways. Changes in the physical structure of the land
are the most visually obvious. Examples include narrowing stream channels, reducing sand supply
to dunes, and stabilizing surfaces such as mudflats, and each invasive species goes about these
changes in their own way. For instance, the burrowing activities of Australian isopods cause the
banks of tidal channels to collapse, leading to the widening of channels and the loss of vegetated salt
marsh (Cox, 1999). On the other hand, Japanese mussels that have invaded the San Diego area are
stabilizing mudflats. Although reaching Southern California in the 1960s,

Genetically Modified Organisms And Our Health And The...
A growing debate today is the effect of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, on our health and
the stability of the environment. Emily Anthes, a journalist who mainly writes about current issues
in science, posted an article on the New York Times titled "Don 't be Afraid of Genetic
Modification". In the article, Anthes presents a few examples of genetically modified animals that
have been considered for consumption and the obstacles that the biotech companies who created
them face. Anthes is discussing a very prevalent topic here. GMOs are here to stay, and it is
important for people to understand what a GMO actually is.
Anthes begins the article by discussing a new type of genetically modified salmon produced by a
biotech company under the name AquaBounty. The fish in question, called the AquAdvantage
salmon, carries two genes that differ from a wild salmon. These allow the salmon the reach its adult
size in about a year and a half rather than three years. However Anthes explains that it has been a
rough road for the biotech company, they first approached the FDA in 1993 about selling the fish
and the proposal is just reaching its concluding stages. There is the possibility that the salmon may
not be approved for human consumption, but if it is approved, this would be the first modified
animal to enter our food supply. Anthes explains to the audience that the modified fish has been
deemed safe by many scientists, including some from the FDA itself, which would make

The Born Free Usa Task Force
Recommendations The members of the Born Free USA Task Force have a common goal to provide
a solution to increase restrictions for exotic pet ownership, which allows for more responsible exotic
pet ownership and the decreased capacity of danger to the public. In addition, it will provide for
more safety precautions and ensure those exotic animals in captivity are provided for every day. The
first step in our process of analyzing the recommendations of exotic pet ownership in Missouri was
researching the current regulations in other states and what was working and not working in those
states. Currently, every state has varying regulations and within those states, many cities and
counties have assorted regulations as well. Based on the success of the drastic changes the state of
Ohio has made in the exotic animal ownership regulations, their platform for change is one to
model. Ohio was once a state with no restrictions on exotic animal ownership prior to the 2011
incidence of Terry Thompson, who set free his exotic animal farm of fifty plus animals before
committing suicide. This incident pushed the already in question exotic pet ownership regulations
into national limelight. Our task force has researched the current restrictions and the process of
implementing them along with the undesirable potential side effects of these new laws. With this
information, we were prepared to present a solid foundation for the state of Missouri to create a new
movement in the exotic pet

Potential Issues Associated with Utility Scale Solar...
The environmental issues associated with the installation, operation and decommission of utility
scale solar energy generation facilities have not yet been explored comprehensively (Turney &
Fthenakis, 2011). Consequently, it is vital that prior to finalization of verdicts regarding the
construction of the proposed Cornish solar farm, that the potential negative consequences are
addressed. Although beneficial in terms of the reduction of overall greenhouse gas emissions, the
installation, operation and decommission phases of the facility have the potential to cause significant
destruction and disturbance to local ecosystems, contrary to the desires and goals of the local
wildlife trust (U.S. Department of Energy & Bureau of Land Management, 2010). This paper will
identify and discuss the potential negative impacts on local wildlife and vegetation/habitat derived
from the development of the proposed solar facility.
The Cornish landscape and its wildlife are fundamental to the culture and economy of the county,
providing ecosystem services such as coastal defense and water storage, in addition to supporting
the farming and tourism industries through it's unique natural beauty and host of iconic species
(Cornwall Wildlife Trust, 2011). This native biota is precious to the region, attracting enthusiasts
from all over the country. The three phases of the proposed solar farms lifetime have the potential to

American Mink Research Paper
My invasive species that I'm investigating is the American mink it is invasive in England. The
American mink came from North America, and got brought to England in 1929 for fur farming.
The American mink's scientific name is Neovison vison and is a semiaquatic, carnivorous animal.
That belongs to the mustelid family. The American mink was brought to England for fur farming for
economic reasons, but some of the minks escaped into the wild and started breeding. It took them 30
years to establish after they escaped. When the otter's population dropped the minks started to grow
in numbers because the otters ate the minks. The mink's predators are birds of prey, owls, foxes,
coyotes, lynx, and otters.
The American mink breed by the male biting the female on the neck and pinning her down with his
forefeet mating normally goes for 10 mins– 4 hours. Mating season is in ... Show more content on

They eat the following but their favorite is the water vole. The water vole's in England are
endangered and is the most effected species in the 20th century because of the American mink. Now
there are more than 110,000 American minks in England.
The American mink brought light tick, fleas and diseases with them when it came to England.
Which affected cattle and sheep which was bad for farmers. The American mink is considered an
invasive species because they are feral animals and, because they kill native animals and spread
diseases that are fatal to the native animals.
To try stop the American mink they are going to use humane methods the best one so far is catching
it in a cage and then shooting it in the head. Gwent Wildlife Trust is doing its best to control the
American mink and many other people have been hunting and killing them. They are trying to stop
the American mink because it is killing the water voles which are endangered and could soon be
extinct if they don't stop

We The People Of The People’S Republic Of China Established
We the people of the People's Republic of China established our republic in 1912. The country is
one of the largest country in the eastern hemisphere, and it possesses a long, rich, and prosperous
history. The nation is the fourth–largest country in size, but the largest in population, with 1.8 billion
people residing within our borders. Unfortunately, it leaves a limited amount of food. Accordingly,
in our mission to insure that our own people get enough food and a healthy diet, we have found
genetically modified organisms, or GMOs to be of value.

Due to limited space, we need to import food. In 2011, we became the world's largest importer of
goods (food?), above Germany, and in 2014, our importation of food (?)cost nearly
13,668,400,000,000 yuan (13.67 trillion yuan, or 2 trillion USD).
Nevertheless, our government is still trying to slow down the amount of food coming into the
country. Farmers have been allowed to grow crops that are to be genetically engineered, and
geneticists are genetically modifying foods. This was deemed legal after we created a commercially,
mass–produced, viral–resistant tobacco plant in 1992. In ancient China, people were genetically
engineering crops and breeding animals (known as domestication) beginning as early as 6,000
B.C.E. Our authorities have allowed growing within our borders since the republic was created, in
1912. Our government actually wants farmers to do it themselves. From December 2015 through
April 2016, our authorities turned away 1.5 million tons of U.S. corn, which is one of our biggest
imports. The 1.5 million tons amount to 36% of our corn imports. Authorities say it is because the
crop contained a GMO strain not yet permitted to import, but U.S. growers believe that it is because
our authorities are shielding their own growers and geneticists because we are growing and
genetically modifying the corn ourselves.

Persuasive Essay On Wild Animals
Have you ever seen those videos of baby animals? Videos of lion cubs chasing around cat toys or
pandas waddling around. They're all adorable and all the comments say how people want one.
Except, those videos don't tell the struggles of owning these animals. Usually, professionals make
those videos and the public then believes they're entitled to the animals. Wild animals are not to be
kept as pets, they're called wild for a reason. Keeping these animals brings a higher risk for humans,
brings a higher chance they'll end up escaping, and most importantly is distressing for the animal.
Now, you may be asking, how does this apply to you? I am glad you've asked! Keeping exotic
animals could mean your life if animals are left unsupervised, and the harsh treatment of animals is
inhumane. Condoning such behavior from humans is abuse in itself.
Keeping exotic animals harbors the chance of issues with humans. Animals are dangerous, holding
natural, unpredictable instincts. Since wild animals are treated like domestic pets, they're held in
similar enclosures by most public. However, since these wild animals aren't able to express their
natural territorial instincts, they're dams, waiting to break. Contributing to this explosive behavior, is
that most animals are pack animals, those who require social interaction. Humans can not offer that
type of communication. As animals grow, they begin to display unpredictable behavior. However,
owners often are reluctant to tell officials of attacks and bites, worrying that their pet will be taken.
A vast majority of exotic animals have the ability to transmit diseases to humans. Diseases such as
Herpes B and Monkey pox can be transmitted via animals. Monkeys, popular pets, often carry
Herpes B and Simian B. Herpes B and Simian B are harmless viruses to the monkeys, but Simian B
can be fatal to humans. Viruses can come from saliva, and any other bodily fluids. Any person who
is scratched, spit on, or sneezed on, has the risk of getting any virus from the primate. Salmonellosis
is another popular disease carried by reptiles, turtles, iguanas, and lizards are popular carriers of the
bacteria. It's received by failure to wash hands after handling reptiles or feces. The

An Invasive Species Has Entered Maryland 's Waters And...
An invasive species has entered Maryland's waters and threatens to dramatically alter the balance of
the aquatic ecosystem. The Northern Snakehead fish, native to Asia and Africa, is a voracious
predator, competing with native fish at all stages of its life. The juveniles will consume zooplankton,
insect larvae, small crustaceans and other fry fish. Adults eat fish, crustaceans, frogs, small reptiles
and even birds and mammals. Snakeheads aggressively protect their young. They are also air–
breathers which allow them to survive on land for as long as four days and migrate up to a quarter
mile over land making control difficult. Snakeheads carry a disease, Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome,
and there is concern this disease may be transmitted to native fish. The snakehead fish was probably
intentionally released in the U.S. by aquarium owners and through the live food fish trade
attempting to establish a local food source. To date, the snakehead fish is found in seven states with
reproducing populations documented in Maryland and Florida. In Maryland, they have been
captured in the Potomac River and tributaries. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources
(DNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Biological Resources Division of the U.S.G.S.
are all involved in monitoring and eradicating the snakehead fish. Maryland anglers can help by
learning to identify the snakehead fish and by removing it from the ecosystem. As further incentive,

are GMOs? GMOs (or "genetically modified organisms") are living organisms whose genetic
material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This
relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that
do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Virtually all commercial GMOs
are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite
biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield,
drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body
of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers'
and consumers' rights. Are GMOs safe? Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe.
In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in
the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of
GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by

Do Animals Enjoy The Circus Like Us?
Do Animals Enjoy the Circus Like Us? "The wild, cruel animal is not behind the bars of cage. He is
in front of it"–Munthe, Axel 1857. Animals have been used in circuses for generations around the
world. You will never find monkeys dance waltz, bears ride bicycles, or tigers jump through burning
hoops in the wild. Circuses have broken the law of nature. Circus performers collect money easily
by using animal to do stupid tricks and they even do not take care of them properly. Animals should
live in cramped cages and travel in the dark cold trailer. That's why I think using animals as
entertainment in the circus should be forbidden. You may laugh while enjoying animals performance

According to teenink.com, during training session, trainers are often use whips, tight collars,
muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks and other painful tools to force animals learn tricks. Trainers drug
some animals to make them "manageable" and surgically remove the teeth and claws of others
(Ashley Palmer, 2016). As well as using direct physical contact to make the animals learn tricks,
they are often forced to go without food and water for prolonged periods when they haven't
performed well during training sessions, as well as during travel periods. Eventhough it's clear that
animals training in circus is cruel, but some people think animals circus can be a chance for children
to see wild animals that they may never see again and learn about animals. But I think this is the
wrong way to learn about animals for children.
So now we know that how suffer is animals live in the circus. They have the same right to live like

Persuasive Essay On Invasive Plants
How easy is it to take care of a plant; pretty simple right? Just give the plant water and sunlight and
it will most likely grow. How about at goldfish? Get a tank, fill it with some water, add the goldfish
and make sure to feed it every once in a while. It takes a bit more work but still relatively easy. How
about having to take care of a reptile, like an iguana? They are much more difficult to take care of.
They also have many more needs including a heat lamp, special diet, forested cage, and they do not
like to be handled. When someone no longer wants these pets, they may be tempted to release them
in the wild and when this happens it can have devastating effects. When any of the species'
mentioned above are released into the wild where they are not native, they have a chance to become
an invasive species. According to the Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area or CISMA,
invasive species are "nonnative plants or animals that cause harm to the environment, economy, or
human health" (CISMA, 2017). Invasive species are normally brought to a new area by people who
want to own exotic pets or have plants that will survive in extreme weather. When the conditions are
favorable to the species it can survive much better than the native species. If the species happens to
find a mate to reproduce, it can grow in population rapidly. One example of this is the rabbit
population on the island of Macquarie where the population went from 20,000 to 130,000 in just six

1. Introduction
Genetic modification is currently at the forefront of modern science and is being utilised in various
fields such as medicine, agriculture and industry. Genetically Modified or transgenic organisms are
organisms that have been genetically altered in a specific way for a particular purpose. It is now
possible for scientists to exchange genes from one species of organism to another. This process is
performed when certain characteristics of one organism are desired in another organism of a
different species. For example a pig could be genetically engineered so that it will produce human
insulin for those suffering from diabetes. Also, it is seen that it could be possible to cure certain
allergies or diseases by replacing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

advancement of therapeutic medicine.
2. Review of Literature
2.1) Transgenic Animals: Their Benefits To Human Welfare (E.T Margawati, 2003, Article)
The article Transgenic Animals: Their Benefits To Human Welfare offers a very useful definition of
genetically modified organisms or transgenic organisms. The three methods of creating a transgenic
animal are also explained in detail. These three methods are DNA Microinjection, Retrovirus–
Mediated Gene Transfer and Embryonic Stem Cell–Mediated Gene Transfer. The ethical debate
behind the use of transgenic animal is also mentioned and notable counter–arguments are made.
Even though comments are made on the ethical debate, no limitations or disadvantages of genetic
engineering are discussed. The article concludes by stating that the use of transgenic organisms will
benefit medical, agricultural and industrial sectors greatly in the future. This article relates to other
articles researched in numerous ways. The manner in which transgenic organisms are seen to benefit
the modern world are similar in each article, it

Negtive Effects of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOS)...
Food, food, food, is what our American culture revolves around. Supposedly biotechnology has
been used to make "improvements" in our food, from the fast food industry to our local grocery
store. This has gone largely unnoticed by the general public. Maybe you've heard of a GMO? These
supposedly improved, genetically modified organisms aren't very beneficial to our bodies at all, but
the FDA wouldn't want us to notice that. GMOS include alfalfa, corn, flax, rice, sugar beets, yellow
summer squash, canola, cotton, papaya, soy, zucchini and wheat. What are GMOS exactly?
According to the Non–GMO Project they are, ""genetically modified organisms," are plants or
animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also ... Show more content

These weeds are then sprayed by farmers with very toxic chemicals which run off into rivers, water
systems, and other resources. One thing about the resources that GMOS provides is that it makes it
more efficient to produce them because they create bigger more bountiful harvests and crops. That
fact should not be seen as a good thing since we know how harmful the GMOs are to our bodies.
Since there is such a huge amount of crops produced, they end up in 80% of the foods in our grocery
stores. These foods vary from Cheez–its to tomatoes to coffee creamer.
GMOs haven't always been in the foods that we eat, there is a time line for these things. Before the
1900s gatherers found food from plants in nature, which were completely natural and farmers would
save seeds from their previously produced crops, then plant them. During that time people began
using yeast and the process of fermentation to alter foods a bit, plus research had barely begun on
the breeding process of food. Once the 1900s began there was a sort of breakthrough in science over
in Europe with Gregor Mendel's genetic theory on how to alter or manipulate plants. He figured out
how to cross one plant with another to make a new plant with whatever characteristics he wanted it
to have. Following that, the next big discovery came from Francis Crick and James Watson in 1953.
They discovered the three dimensional double helix structure of DNA. It showed scientist how to

Persuasive Speech : Attention Getter For Animal Rights
Alex Villa
Professor Chen
GEO 102
16 November 2017
General Purpose: To Persuade
Topic: Animal rights
Purpose Formula: To persuade my fellow classmates, who are consumers of animal based products
and supporters of zoos and wildlife conservation efforts, that animals deserve the same rights as
humans and should not be used for profit.
1. Attention Step
A. Attention Getter: Imagine living in a space about a third the size of this room. You also share this
space with 3 other people. This is what animals deal with when living in zoos and aquariums.
B. Significance of Topic: Many of us are probably wondering how this is morally acceptable in our
society or how this is even legal.
C. Speaker Credibility: After countless research, I've come across many stories about the ethics and
morality of animal captivity in order to share with you facts and information about this topic.
D. Preview of Main Points:
First, I will share with you the physical and mental effects of animals in institutions such as zoos
and Sea World.
Second, I will share how releasing these animals into wildlife reserves are for their own benefit.
Lastly, I will show you how you could make a difference.
2. Problem Step (Showing a Need)
A. Simple Statement of Problem: Animals being kept in zoos and aquariums are negatively affecting
their physical and mental health.
Statistic: 54% of elephants in the UK showed mental illness symptoms 48% of lions spend most of
their time pacing, which is seen as a recognized behavioral problem. (Caps, 2010). B. Illustration:
An animal's mental illness can be shown in a wide variety of ways.
Example: For example birds will excessively pluck out their feathers and chimpanzees will pull out
their own hair. (Dasgupta, 2015). C. Ramifications: The consequences of captivity is not limited to
only mental or physical illness, it can also be fatal.
Expert Testimony: 40% of lion cubs die before one month of age. In the wild, only 30% of cubs are
thought to die before they are six months old and at least a third of those deaths are due to factors
which are absent in zoos, like predation. (CAPS, 2010). D. Pointing: A polar bear in the central park
zoo now has the nickname bipolar bear, due to

Genetically And Genetically Modified Food
Genetically modified organisms have been a contentious topic for the last several years. Decried as
being chemically dangerous to the human body, potentially ruinous of worldwide agriculture, and
harmful to the environment, GMOs have a rather contemptible reputation. Despite these
denunciations, it is undeniable that both willful ignorance and outright misinformation have played a
part in the public's conception of genetically modified food. GMOs have undoubtedly been the
victim of character assassination and it is of utmost importance that they are given a factually sound
assessment rather than one based around fear mongering. The truth is that genetically engineered
organisms are as harmless for the body and environment as any average, traditionally produced food
product.
To best understand GMOs, it is important to elucidate their history. Despite being thought of as a
recent blight on the food landscape, GMOs have a historical root that ties back to the beginning of
time. That said, GMOs must first be defined. They are any organism who's DNA has been
genetically manipulated to either express or eliminate certain traits. Although commonly thought of
as solely being descriptive of produce, genetic modification can be used on any plant. Additionally,
there has been recent progress made on genetically modifying animals and even humans. Although
not specifically terminologized as "GMOs", farmers have been using primitive genetic engineering
since the dawn of agriculture. For

Invasive Species Essay
From the smallest fly to the blue whale, from a blade of grass to a towering redwood, everything
exploits the natural resources that Earth and its other inhabitants provide. In order to ensure its
survival, an organism must assimilate itself into the food web or risk extinction at the hand of
natural selection. Sometimes, a species is accidentally or purposefully introduced into a new area.
These newcomers, commonly known as invasive species have no choice but to make themselves a
part of the food web or die out. Unfortunately, that usually leads to fierce competition for resources
between a local species and the invasive one, in which only the victor is allowed to survive. In a
relatively short amount of time, the sudden pressure on resources can completely upset and destroy
an ecosystem, taking the invasive species with it. With the invasive species destroyed, the ecosystem
can slowly rebuild back to the way it was before. According to National Geographic, an invasive
species is a "type of plant or animal that is not indigenous to a particular area and causes economic
or environmental harm." (National Geographic).[6] Based on that definition, humans sound
suspiciously like an invasive species, except on a global scale. If humanity does not decide to
become more sustainable soon, we will suffer the same fate as other invasive species: extinction.
Luckily, the pressures of human exploitation of the environment for resources can be mostly
eliminated through the use of

If We Are What We Eat, What Have We Become?
When I think of all–natural foods, my mind is filled with thoughts of free range chicken, organic

One thing that does not come to mind is Genetically Modified Organisms. Everywhere we turn,
GMOs are popping up at an alarming rate. The scary thing is that many people are not even aware
they are consuming these products. As of now, companies who manufacture GMOs are not required

Upon learning this, I vowed to never again eat a genetically modified apple.
However, eating foods that are not genetically altered may be easier said than done. At present,
manufacturers are not required to label their products as containing GMOs. According to the Food
and Drug Administration, "foods developed using recombinant DNA (or rDNA) techniques would
not be required to have special labeling to reveal that fact to consumers (Le Trent)." While this may
seem like a harmless practice to many consumers, it can often lead a person to feel deceived and
misinformed.
According to a January 2012 lawsuit against Frito–Lay filed by Chris Shake, "modified organisms
are created artificially in a laboratory by swapping genetic material across species to exhibit traits
not naturally theirs (Dye)." The lawsuit also argues that the labeling of snack foods such as Tostitos
and Sun Chips as "all–natural" should not be permitted sine they are made from genetically
engineered corn and oils. In my opinion, "all–natural" means the ingredients can be found in nature,
not in a Petri dish.
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) proposes that a myriad of health
problems including infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and
cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems, and organ damage are all associated with the

The Effects Of Genetically Modified Organisms

  • 1. The Effects of Genetically Modified Organisms In the recent years, Genetically Modified organisms (GMOs) have in numerous ways affected the composition of our diets considering the fact that they have replaced our healthy and naturally produced food with genetically altered food. These alterations have had significant effects on human health and the society in general. These pesticide resistant foods are products of merging genes of different species together through genetic engineering. When individuals consume these genetically modified foods, they are at a high risk of contracting various diseases including terminal illnesses such as cancer (Smith & Genetic Roulette 258). On numerous occasions individuals do not realize that they are consuming these harmful toxins as they are infused into different foods without the knowledge of consumers (Pence 153). Labelling of GMOs stands out as the perfect solution that will help consumers differentiate foods with GMOs and those produced exclusively through natural processes. Despite the existence of farmers who maintain traditional and natural farming practices, those who choose involve GMOs in the production of their foods make more profits with less efforts and time involved. This study seeks to advocate for the labelling of GMOs to create and promote human awareness. Population To facilitate the study and develop a proper solution to the problem, the research will sample 100 individuals from different sectors within the society. The students from different departments ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Invasives Vs Non-Invasives Invasives versus non–invasives: Not all alien species are invasive. Many, such as honeybees, may be considered beneficial to the environment and the economy. If a species hasn't had any record of introduction to new habitats, it is nearly impossible to tell whether it will be dangerous or not. The cane toad was introduced to Australia under the mistaken impression that it would only eat the insects they hoped it would. Garlic mustard was introduced as an herb. The best practice is to simply import as few new non–native species as possible. This also includes tightening all pathways of introduction to prevent new introductions. Community outreach: A website will be created by the local CISMA which will include information on invasives and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Environmental Education In today's time of environmental distress, it is pertinent that children be educated on the environment in order to instill attitudes of empowerment to change the world and optimism toward the future. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, and countless other anthropogenic issues threaten today's living species, and many animals have already lost the battle, proving that educating youth on wildlife conservation is of utmost importance. Environmental education in children and adolescents has always been a significant topic, as they hold the future of the Earth in their power. Educators must be able to critically evaluate the effectiveness of their message to ensure their intended outcomes and make appropriate modifications. Environmental education is based on the five pillars of awareness, knowledge, attitude, skill, and participation. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization established these objectives in the Tbilisi Declaration in order to ensure that environmental education around the world has similar goals, which include promoting individuals to gain motivation to participate in the protection of the environment (Garcia et. al., 2016). These intersections of environmental education can be integrated into the curriculum of students in all grades and are effective in nurturing an appreciation and concern for the environment (Cutter–Mackenzie et. al., 2014). Educational programs aim to spread knowledge in order to inspire audiences to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Social Responsibility Of Corporations Essay Abstract This paper explores the importance of social responsibility within corporations. This paper also explores "The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits" by Milton Friedman and his stance on social responsibility. Friedman believed that corporations should not waste money on new initiatives if it was just to appease the public, especially if it went above what laws required. Examples are shown how corporations must listen to the customer or it could hurt the profitability of the corporation, with social media being a big tool to press issues. Also discussed are laws that support socially responsible initiatives such as pollution reduction that direct and provide incentives for businesses. Keywords: Milton Friedman, The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits, social media, social responsibility, Smuckers, GMO, genetically modified organisms, The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 The Goal of the Firm According to Investopedia, Milton Friedman was an American economist and statistician known for his strong beliefs in free–market capitalism. Friedman was also opposed to any government ran programs that regulated policy that was used for the purpose of fueling business activity and employment. In 1970, Friedman wrote an article labeled "The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits". The basic premise of the article was to argue that business should not worry about social responsibility; rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Environmental And Environmental Effects Of Invasive Species THE EFFECT OF INVASIVE SPECIES: ELEPHANT EARS VERSUS IRISES INTRODUCTION How much harm do invasive species actually create for the plants in their habitat? An invasive species is a non–native plant, fungi, or animal that takes over a foreign ecosystem by manipulating the environment and plants around them (Pysek and Chatry 2014). Invasive ecology focuses on identifying the factors underlying the infiltration of the invasive species and the affects that result. Each invasive species plays a specific role within the new community (Richardson and Pysek 2008). Not only do these invasive species cause economic harm and harm to human health, but can also affect the environment and the other plants inhabiting that ecosystem (Vila et. al 2011). Because of this, society faces a major challenge trying to manage or kill off these invasive invaders. Rapid action is the most beneficial way to manage this enemy invader. However, it is hard to recognize when the invasive species actually inhabits the land. So, other efforts must be done to eradicate the species including: digging or pulling it out, attempting to maintain the invasive species in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We noted if any plants died, how dry the tray looked, and various other observations. Final measurements will be taken on April 12, 2016. Final measurements include: the length of the stem, stem length from the korm, weight of the korm, steam weight without the leaves, and stem weights with the leaves. To find the growth of each treatment, we will divide the final date by the initial data collected. Specifically, our group will divide elephant ear growth by Iris growth. So, we will compare the growths of the EI pots. If the proportional of elephant ear versus iris is bigge than 1, this means that the Elephant ear grew larger than Iris. We can then input the data into the respectable ANOVA tests and Post Hoc tests to further analyze our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Pros And Cons Of Non Native Plants Do you know the affects non native plants have on the Arizona landscape? There are many invasive plants that are destroying our landscape . I'm going to be sharing the pros, and cons the non native plants have on the Arizona landscape. In my opinion the spread of invasive plants is more harmful to our native landscape than it is beneficial. A native plant is a plant that evolves in a particular area for a long period of time. They also adapted to the weather change in that specific area, As well as worked alongside other plants to provide habitat for wildlife. A non native plant is a plant that originates from a particular place and was put some place else by accident. The dangers of having a non native plant in a place in which it did not originate is harmful because our wildlife eat the native plants and if a non native plant evolves in that area and the animals eat it there is no telling what harmful side effects that specific plant will have on that animal. ... Some animals aren't as affected by these fires as others are like reptiles who can avoid some of the harmful effects of the fire because they can go underground. When the wildfire spreads the animals left on the ground that don't flea can be extremely affected by the smoke of this burning fire, some of these animals don't survive because they aren't able to flea or hide from the fire. When the ones that flea try to come back there is nothing left for them to live off of essentially their habitat has been destroyed . • 7. Chemistry Lab And Organic Chemistry After a harsh Wednesday due to Chemistry Lab and Organic Chemistry, I enjoy sitting in the patio area of Cafe 1919 and enjoy a Panini along with a Caprese salad. Both the main dish and side contain a fruit I once hated as a child. Tomato have always been the part of the burger I threw out, the part of the salad I did not touch, the part I could never swallow. Even throughout high school, I always hated tomatoes, but ever since I got to UCLA my love for this fruit exponentially grew out of nowhere. One day as I was enjoying my usual Wednesday lunch, I wonder what gave these little morsels such a juicy taste. Perhaps UCLA does but the best fruit and vegetables for their students, perhaps the oil the tomatoes bathe in give it its rich taste, or perhaps we have those hidden GMO, gentically modified organisms, that people argue over its stability. I search if there is any known gentically altered tomatoes and the search engine directed me to links that talk about a product known as the Flavr Savr. Interesting enough the product known as the Flavr Savr, which is a gentically altered tomato is actually the first FDA approved GMO to hit to the market. After discovering the first ever GMO my curious mind started asking questions that I needed to know. I wonder what exactly is the Flavr Sav? When was it created? Who created it and how? Was there a reason they chose to mess with the DNA of a tomato? How did people response to the first of many gentically altered food? Is the Flavr ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Problems Associated With Globalization And The Ability Of... With globalization and the ability to travel around the world comes the movement of many things, including many plants and animals. However, the connectedness of the world allows non–native species to be introduced to new habitats. The introduction of most species that become invasive is "due to unintentional 'hitchhiking' through international trade, with invaders stowing away in ships, planes, trucks, shipping containers, and packing materials, or arriving on nursery stock, unprocessed logs, fruits, seeds, and vegetables" (McNeely, p. 1, 2001). The movement of organisms around the world started with the earliest of colonists as they tried to recreate their homes and create a familiar environment in newly discovered lands. Not all alien species are invasive and some are the basis of modern agriculture, but the species that have become invasive have led to sometimes disastrous repercussions and numerous extinctions. If non–native species outcompete native organisms and use all the resources available, these introduced organisms are called invasive species. Some plants or animals can be successfully introduced into an ecosystem and adapt to coexist with the native species, but invasive species take over the habitats and niches of native organisms. Invasive species spread rapidly and are not controlled in the same way native species are because the predators or conditions that regulated the growth of these species do not exist where they have been transplanted. These species ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Missouri Department Of Natural Resources Essay Introduction The Missouri Department of Natural Resources was established in 1974 to protect natural resources, natural commodities, provide residential support, and recreational opportunities (Missouri Department of Natural Resources About Us). This department owns and operates The Division of State Parks (Missouri State Parks About the State Park System). It oversees the regulation and protection of all Missouri State Parks (Missouri State Parks About the State Park System). Indian Creek Wild Area is a specially protected area within Trial of Tears State Park in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri (Missouri State Park Designated Wild Areas). It was established in 1978 for research, outdoor activities, and instructional lectures (Missouri State Park Designated Wild Areas). Indian Creek Wild Area occupies 526.1 ha of land within the park (Missouri State Park Designated Wild Areas). The park itself is located east, off Highway 177 and west from the Mississippi River. The park sits parallel to the Mississippi River. The wild area is in the northern hemisphere of the park, just above Vancil Hollow and contains numerous hiking trails that run through the it. The woodlands of Indian Creek Wild Area are composed mostly of Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip poplar), Carya (hickory) and Quercus (oak) in the uplands and Salix (willow), Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum), and Platanus (sycamore) in the basins, along with a variety of flora (Missouri State Parks, Peewah Trail). • 10. The Pros And Cons Of GMO Should GMO's be labeled in the United States? A GMO is a genetically modified organism that goes through the process of genetic engineering. This is when genes of one organism are extracted, altered, and then artificially placed into another organism to then grow. We typically see GMOs in the food we consume every day. These foods include fruits and vegetables, however the most common organisms that are genetically engineered include, corn, soy, and cotton. It is ultimately the unnatural cross breeding of plants, animals, bacteria, and virus genes (Non–GMO Project). But now why is there a debate for placing a label to notify consumers of GMOs in their foods? Do we know the potential harm that GMOs can cause? We have the right to know what we are putting into our bodies and what is found in our everyday foods. So why do we use GMOs? Well there is a "So– called advantage" with these products that it costs less to produce and they are better quality. But do we know if they're better quality or our bodies? There's not enough research to prove that the human race and other organisms have suffered dire consequences from consuming these genetically engineered foods. However there are some linkages that link GMOs to some health problems, environmental damage, and farmer/consumer rights. In the United States, we are not yet up to date with other countries one being the metric system we have not yet switched to and the labeling of GMOs being required. In three hundred regions ... • 11. Golden Rice : Pro, Pros And Cons Of Golden Food There are, debatably, pros and cons of creation in any zone of life. Especially with Golden Rice, there are numerous nations that appear to be supporters of the Golden Rice. With biogenetic building of rice, there is an expansion underway, financial incitement, and in addition, a reduction in starvation and increment of beta–carotene. Many research has been conducted and debated on as to whether Golden Rice increases the sufficient effects of human nutrition. To begin, Golden Rice provides beta–carotene to individuals that are vitamin A deficient. The amount of beta–carotene in Golden rice does not harmfully affect the human body. Golden Rice can adjust to and protect the development of various sorts of products, which means it helps to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This says a lot to me since I am a person that has a hypersensitive response to sustenance. With things being what they are, what reason would I need to hurt myself by enabling them to consume this rice? The genetically modified organism (GMOS) refers to the production of a crop or an animal whose genetic constitution has been altered by use of the biotechnology to favor the development of the physiological characteristics, which facilitates the production of the desired yields (Beyer et al. 2002). The creation of the genetically modified organisms includes the utilization of the logical techniques such as conceptive cloning and the recombinant DNA innovation. Golden rice has been altered through genetic building to create a type of vitamin A, known as beta– carotene. Beta–carotene is in charge of the golden yellow color of the rice. White rice does not process the beta–carotene and subsequently, does not have the golden color. At the point when the carotenoids in the golden rice are expended, they are either stored into fat tissue or changed over into vitamin A. The rice contains characteristic greasy lipids which help in the assimilation of its carotenoids by the body. Different advantages of the golden rice incorporate the arrangement of the adequate vitality to the body. The vitality originates from starch contained inside the rice. • 12. The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering There are multiple negative perceptions associated with genetic engineering. A variety of people assume that all which is genetically engineered causes more harm than good. Because of these misconceptions, those who see them as harmful do not use them, limit their production, and do what they can to stop genetic engineering with anti–GMO movements (Clancy, C.A., 2016). This results in people not benefitting from the seemingly infinite array of positives that erupt from genetic engineering, specifically the genetic engineering of bacteria, also known as the genetic engineering of microorganisms or GEM. GEM proves to be useful in many fields; not only does it aid humans, but also the environment and other living organisms (Kulshreshtha, S., 2013 ). GEM has produced astonishing medical advances, such as the creation of insulin to battle diabetes, interferon alpha to fight Hepatitis C, and Factor VIII and Factor IX to help cure hemophilia (H. Almeida, M.H. Amaral, P. Lobão, 2011). Additionally, the spread of diseases can be limited, such as the elimination of the dangerous malaria parasite by implementing a strain of bacteria into the mosquito (Wang, S., Ghosh, K. A., Bongio, N., Stebbings, A. K., Lampe, J. D., Jacobs–Lorena, M., 2012). There are doubts about whether these processes are good because people believe that the bacteria can somehow escape and damage ecosystems. In order to combat this, scientists have found ways to ensure that bacteria do not survive outside of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Conservation Of The Feral Pigs INTRODUCTION This model addresses the pathways in which ecological drivers are having significant influence over the natural systems of Hawaii. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time; Hawaii has not been exempt from the effects. We're witnessing a large increase in sea levels, which can lead to the erosion of the small islands and eventually displace humans. Climate change also is influencing the way we manage forests, to promote carbon sequestration we must focus on managing forests for sustainable regeneration. Forest regeneration also influences other ecosystem services like cultural, regulating, provisioning and supporting services. Specifically dealing with the presence of feral pigs we see different drivers causing the increase in population and disturbances. Cultural drivers are an issue. There is debate over control methods for the feral pigs has been gridlocked between conservation biologists/environmentalists, hunters and managers. Public hunts have been highly encouraged due to low costs, but hunters are afraid of snare traps that could hurt them and potentially kill their dogs. Conservationists want to restore native vegetation. Managers are seeking public approval and effective means of control. Overall, not enough is being done and human relations are being strained. This is reducing cultural services from the land immensely. Another driver is changing land use and development, which is highly stressing for the ecosystems. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. How White Tailed Deer Affect Native And Invasive Plant... How White–tailed Deer Effect Native and Invasive Plant Species Populations in the Eastern United States. Introduction Whitetail deer have come to be known as a keystone species, species known for affecting other organisms in an ecosystem. Deer are known as a keystone species in forest habitats such as in the Eastern United States because they are capable of destroying potential forest habitat of other organisms (McShea and Rappole, 1992). For example, deer have a negative impact on forest ecosystems by trampling and over browsing over vegetation, without creating any habitat for other native species. Throughout the eastern United States, the abundance of white–tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) has increased dramatically over the last century (Taggart and Long, 2015). Population increases could be due to increased habitat fragmentation from land development, reduced predators and/or hunting pressure. Individual deer ranges varied during seasonal times, deer movements are usually greatest during the peak breeding months from late fall through winter (Williams et. al, 2012). Regardless of the cause, high deer densities can have significant effects on plant communities such as plant decay and/or even death. Deer consume a large amounts of plant biomass (leaves, buds, flowers and fruits) and directly reduce the growth, reproduction, and survival of herbaceous and woody plant species (Shen et. al, 2016). The handler of the pet can be harmed by their animal during care or transport. "The HSUS [Humane Society of the United States] reports that it's not unusual for exotic pets to be malnourished and stressed; they also tend to develop behavioral issues that can lead to bites and attacks" ("Facts about the Exotic Pet Trade"). When provoked or pressured, humans tend to attack each other in instances as massive as wars to as little as a fight over the last cookie. Animals react similarly when stressed or placed into an uncomfortable situation. Because of this, attacks are more common with wild animals as they are not accustomed to the environment they are so brutally placed into. Physical force is probably the first thought that comes to mind when harm is mentioned, yet one of the largest factors contributing to the general harm of handlers happens to be disease. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) one of the most well known animal rights organizations, believes disease is a large risk to handlers. "Seventy–five percent of all new infectious diseases originate from non–human animals" ("Inside the Exotic Animal Trade"). Different animals carry different diseases, and handlers of these animals are more susceptible to various uncommon household illness'. Wounds inflicted by animals contribute largely to the possibility of diseases. "Animal bites can result in serious injuries and potential exposure to zoonotic diseases such as rabies. It is estimated that about 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year, and about 1 in 5 of those people require medical attention" ("You and Your Family"). This statistic proves how diseases contracted from animals can affect humans. Genetically engineered fungus with genes for anti–malarial antibodies from humans may be useful in combating the disease. Pesticides already in use are becoming ineffective. This method could also combat insect and tick–bug diseases. The researchers made this fungus by using an existing fungus that targets mosquitos and genetically modifying it to have genes for malarial antibodies. The antibody attacks the parasite which causes malaria. 3 separate groups of mosquitos which carried the parasite which caused malaria. One of the groups was sprayed with the fungus, another group sprayed with the wild type fungus and the last group weren't altered. Only a quarter of the mosquitos sprayed with the transgenic fungus still carried the parasite, and there was a 95% drop in parasite numbers on the mosquitos that still carried the parasite. 87% of the mosquitos sprayed with the wild–type fungus still carried the parasite. 94% of the mosquitos from the group that wasn't sprayed carried the parasite. 240 million people are infected with malaria through insects carrying parasites annualy. 850 000 people lose their lives to malaria every year. Persuasive Essay On Wild Animals With nearly millions of animals dying each year from being captive, or endangered species being hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the lack of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals from having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and frustration, which is risking animals overall health and well being. These morally unacceptable and cruel actions of retaining wild animals in captivity is certainly wrong. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This money would do far more to help animals if it were spent on habitat preservation projects. While the Lincoln Park zoo has free admissions all year long, people take the advantage to go and watch animals perform tricks, paying no attention to their dangerous and insufficient living environment. Proposal The Lincoln Park Zoo should be banned in order to protect animals from unsuitable enclosures and inadequate living conditions. Many of us feel the obligation to give animals the same rights as ourselves, so the idea of closing this zoo will prevent the capturing of wildlife and help end the miseries of several animals. By shutting down the Lincoln Park Zoo, numerous controversial issues and struggles will brought to attention on how to care for captive wildlife, or where animals would go without a home. However, if public zoos planned to close within the next year, hundreds of animals that are currently residing in the exhibits will be transported to an animal care center and then released back into the wildlife. This would allow for animals to roam free without being enclosed within a limited space, and be able to enjoy their natural habitat. Genetically Modified Organisms And Its Impact On The World With 92% of corn, 94% of soybeans, and 94% of cotton being genetically modified and with upwards of 75% of processed foods containing GMOs according to the Center of Food Safety, GMOs are clearly a very important topic. According to Whole Foods, GMOs or genetically modified organisms are organisms whose DNA has been altered. The reason for the creation of GMOs was for the purpose of increasing plant productivity by engineering them to resist certain diseases, produce their own pesticides, etc. and is mostly prevalent in North America ("GMO"). According to the Genome News Network, in 1973, Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen were the first to accomplish the direct manipulation of genes using genetic modification ("Genetics"). Because of GMOs are such a new technology, there has been some debate over the safety of GMOs. Genetically Modified Organisms have been considered to be controversial; however, they have had an overall positive impact on the world. Firstly, GMOs have positively impacted the world because they have improved food production. According to Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences researchers, "The genetically modified plants had stronger flower clusters that produced more seeds, meaning a greater yield of rice per plant––close to 50 more percent by weight. And the starch content of those grains of rice was about 10 percent higher. In total, above–ground weight increased by about 30 percent, while below– ground weight decreased by 35 percent" (qtd. in Johnson). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the Steps to Writing Well textbook by Jean Wyrick, there has an article that supports people who adopt wild animals and the name is Zuana Kukol's Opposing View: Let People Own Exotic Animals. Based on that, the author gives a message that people should be allowed to adopt any animals because it helps animals stay away from extinction, everybody should have freedom to pick any species of wild, and exotic animals have low numbers of harmful per year. This is also a way to eliminate extinction because exotic animals are captive animals, so they will be backup when animals go extinct. Moreover, the article shows the record of fatalities per year by captive animals only around four people per year. Meanwhile, traffic accidents are around one hundred per day. • 21. Factors And Effects Of Invasive Species Introduction Invasive species have a serious effect on native wildlife, representing the second major threat to biodiversity after the destruction of habitat (IUCN/SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG)). The introduction of alien species is mainly a consequence of past human actions, especially after the 1950s when international trade increased. Besides the spread due to international trade, invasive species were often introduced for aquaculture and sports purpose (Grosholz 1996; Gozlan et al. 2010). Non–native species often outperforms indigenous species in their habitat directly by competitive exclusion, niche displacement, high reproductive rate, predation, fewer natural enemies in the new environment, long life span and their good dispersal (Manchester and Bullock, 2000; Cuda et al, 2015; San Sebastian et al, 2015; GB non–native species secretariat, 2017). Furthermore, invasive species are more skilled predators and have a wide range of plasticity regarding food consumption and shelter preferences (Gherardi and Acquistapac 2007; Olsson et al. 2009). Frequently, introduced species are vectors of pathogens and parasites and in the past have caused a rapid decline of native population due to their susceptibility to new disease (GB non–native species secretariat). Apart from the effect on biodiversity, non–native species caused difficulties in countries budget, where in the UK direct annual costs of invasive species are nearly £1.7 billion (Hulm, 2009; GB ... In recent times, the introduction and spread of invasive species has transformed native communities rapidly and, in some cases, created irreversible damages. In the Earth's history, changes have often occurred in the ecosystems. For example, glaciers and the retreat of glaciers cause wide–spread changes. However, although change is a constant in ecosystems, animals and habitats often cannot adapt to the rapid alterations of non–natural stresses. Harm to the environment from the introduction of invasive species occurs through changes in the habitat and declines in the native species. Invasive species ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Van Driesche, nonnative species are more likely to establish if they invade habitats with lowered biotic resistance, encounter prey with poorly developed mechanisms of self–defense, or invade habitats unaccompanied by their specialized natural enemies or when their invasion is facilitated by earlier invaders (2000). Damage to these communities, then, can be seen both in cumulative effects and in a cycle of self–reinforcement. Although pristine environments are still at risk from invasion, this positive feedback loop makes habitats already with a disturbance by exotics even more vulnerable to other invasions. With the increasing amount of disturbed habitats, invasive species could soon become the leading cause of ecological degradation (Soulé & Orians, 2001). Invasive species can alter habitats in a number of ways. Changes in the physical structure of the land are the most visually obvious. Examples include narrowing stream channels, reducing sand supply to dunes, and stabilizing surfaces such as mudflats, and each invasive species goes about these changes in their own way. For instance, the burrowing activities of Australian isopods cause the banks of tidal channels to collapse, leading to the widening of channels and the loss of vegetated salt marsh (Cox, 1999). On the other hand, Japanese mussels that have invaded the San Diego area are stabilizing mudflats. Although reaching Southern California in the 1960s, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the article, Anthes presents a few examples of genetically modified animals that have been considered for consumption and the obstacles that the biotech companies who created them face. Anthes is discussing a very prevalent topic here. GMOs are here to stay, and it is important for people to understand what a GMO actually is. Anthes begins the article by discussing a new type of genetically modified salmon produced by a biotech company under the name AquaBounty. The fish in question, called the AquAdvantage salmon, carries two genes that differ from a wild salmon. These allow the salmon the reach its adult size in about a year and a half rather than three years. However Anthes explains that it has been a rough road for the biotech company, they first approached the FDA in 1993 about selling the fish and the proposal is just reaching its concluding stages. There is the possibility that the salmon may not be approved for human consumption, but if it is approved, this would be the first modified animal to enter our food supply. They're all adorable and all the comments say how people want one. Except, those videos don't tell the struggles of owning these animals. Usually, professionals make those videos and the public then believes they're entitled to the animals. Wild animals are not to be kept as pets, they're called wild for a reason. Keeping these animals brings a higher risk for humans, brings a higher chance they'll end up escaping, and most importantly is distressing for the animal. Now, you may be asking, how does this apply to you? I am glad you've asked! Keeping exotic animals could mean your life if animals are left unsupervised, and the harsh treatment of animals is inhumane. Condoning such behavior from humans is abuse in itself. Keeping exotic animals harbors the chance of issues with humans. Animals are dangerous, holding natural, unpredictable instincts. Since wild animals are treated like domestic pets, they're held in similar enclosures by most public. However, since these wild animals aren't able to express their natural territorial instincts, they're dams, waiting to break. Contributing to this explosive behavior, is that most animals are pack animals, those who require social interaction. Humans can not offer that type of communication. As animals grow, they begin to display unpredictable behavior. However, owners often are reluctant to tell officials of attacks and bites, worrying that their pet will be taken. A vast majority of exotic animals have the ability to transmit diseases to humans. Diseases such as Herpes B and Monkey pox can be transmitted via animals. Monkeys, popular pets, often carry Herpes B and Simian B. Herpes B and Simian B are harmless viruses to the monkeys, but Simian B can be fatal to humans. Viruses can come from saliva, and any other bodily fluids. Any person who is scratched, spit on, or sneezed on, has the risk of getting any virus from the primate. The Northern Snakehead fish, native to Asia and Africa, is a voracious predator, competing with native fish at all stages of its life. The juveniles will consume zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other fry fish. Adults eat fish, crustaceans, frogs, small reptiles and even birds and mammals. Snakeheads aggressively protect their young. They are also air– breathers which allow them to survive on land for as long as four days and migrate up to a quarter mile over land making control difficult. Snakeheads carry a disease, Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome, and there is concern this disease may be transmitted to native fish. The snakehead fish was probably intentionally released in the U.S. by aquarium owners and through the live food fish trade attempting to establish a local food source. To date, the snakehead fish is found in seven states with reproducing populations documented in Maryland and Florida. In Maryland, they have been captured in the Potomac River and tributaries. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Biological Resources Division of the U.S.G.S. are all involved in monitoring and eradicating the snakehead fish. • 34. Gmos Ethical In most food markets in the United States, a majority of the food sold in those markets are GMOs. Food that has been genetically engineered to obtain traits that are unnatural to said organism. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are two types of plant breeding: the traditional method and the genetic engineering method ( Nodoushani, et al 2015). The FDA believes that the main difference between the two methods of plant breeding is that the traditional method can yield unwanted effects, while the genetically engineered process can control the effects and alter them to our needs which are identified as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). Nevertheless there are opposers against GMOs that believe that GMOs are unethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since most people eat GMOs it creates a community of people who may not know what modifications have been done to the engineered foods they have been eating. The unveiling of the modifications done on GMOs may alter a person's decision in eating it or not. GMOs have been in production for a long time and the benefits such as the nutritional value undermines the controversial negative impacts that GMOs might contain. Looking back at the sources, there is an abundance of information covering both the negative and positive impacts of GMOs. This information allows one to be unbiased during the method process so it can recieve an accurate and credible amount of data. The modifications of GMOs are not so specific. The adverse effects of GMOs are more emphasized rather than the actual process that goes behind the modifications done on the actual organisms. Further research for the specific process will be needed so the research will be able to inform the sample that I am conducting research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Negtive Effects of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOS)... Food, food, food, is what our American culture revolves around. Supposedly biotechnology has been used to make "improvements" in our food, from the fast food industry to our local grocery store. This has gone largely unnoticed by the general public. Maybe you've heard of a GMO? These supposedly improved, genetically modified organisms aren't very beneficial to our bodies at all, but the FDA wouldn't want us to notice that. GMOS include alfalfa, corn, flax, rice, sugar beets, yellow summer squash, canola, cotton, papaya, soy, zucchini and wheat. What are GMOS exactly? According to the Non–GMO Project they are, ""genetically modified organisms," are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These weeds are then sprayed by farmers with very toxic chemicals which run off into rivers, water systems, and other resources. One thing about the resources that GMOS provides is that it makes it more efficient to produce them because they create bigger more bountiful harvests and crops. That fact should not be seen as a good thing since we know how harmful the GMOs are to our bodies. Since there is such a huge amount of crops produced, they end up in 80% of the foods in our grocery stores. These foods vary from Cheez–its to tomatoes to coffee creamer. GMOs haven't always been in the foods that we eat, there is a time line for these things. Before the 1900s gatherers found food from plants in nature, which were completely natural and farmers would save seeds from their previously produced crops, then plant them. During that time people began using yeast and the process of fermentation to alter foods a bit, plus research had barely begun on the breeding process of food. Once the 1900s began there was a sort of breakthrough in science over in Europe with Gregor Mendel's genetic theory on how to alter or manipulate plants. He figured out how to cross one plant with another to make a new plant with whatever characteristics he wanted it to have. Following that, the next big discovery came from Francis Crick and James Watson in 1953. They discovered the three dimensional double helix structure of DNA. It showed scientist how to look at genes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Persuasive Speech : Attention Getter For Animal Rights Alex Villa Professor Chen GEO 102 16 November 2017 General Purpose: To Persuade Topic: Animal rights Purpose Formula: To persuade my fellow classmates, who are consumers of animal based products and supporters of zoos and wildlife conservation efforts, that animals deserve the same rights as humans and should not be used for profit. 1. Attention Step A. Attention Getter: Imagine living in a space about a third the size of this room. You also share this space with 3 other people. This is what animals deal with when living in zoos and aquariums. B. Significance of Topic: Many of us are probably wondering how this is morally acceptable in our society or how this is even legal. C. Speaker Credibility: After countless research, I've come across many stories about the ethics and morality of animal captivity in order to share with you facts and information about this topic. D. Preview of Main Points: First, I will share with you the physical and mental effects of animals in institutions such as zoos and Sea World. Second, I will share how releasing these animals into wildlife reserves are for their own benefit. Lastly, I will show you how you could make a difference. 2. Problem Step (Showing a Need) A. Simple Statement of Problem: Animals being kept in zoos and aquariums are negatively affecting their physical and mental health. Statistic: 54% of elephants in the UK showed mental illness symptoms 48% of lions spend most of their time pacing, which is seen as a recognized behavioral problem. (Caps, 2010). B. Illustration: An animal's mental illness can be shown in a wide variety of ways. Example: For example birds will excessively pluck out their feathers and chimpanzees will pull out their own hair. (Dasgupta, 2015). C. Ramifications: The consequences of captivity is not limited to only mental or physical illness, it can also be fatal.
  • 37. Expert Testimony: 40% of lion cubs die before one month of age. In the wild, only 30% of cubs are thought to die before they are six months old and at least a third of those deaths are due to factors which are absent in zoos, like predation. (CAPS, 2010). D. Pointing: A polar bear in the central park zoo now has the nickname bipolar bear, due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Genetically And Genetically Modified Food Genetically modified organisms have been a contentious topic for the last several years. Decried as being chemically dangerous to the human body, potentially ruinous of worldwide agriculture, and harmful to the environment, GMOs have a rather contemptible reputation. Despite these denunciations, it is undeniable that both willful ignorance and outright misinformation have played a part in the public's conception of genetically modified food. GMOs have undoubtedly been the victim of character assassination and it is of utmost importance that they are given a factually sound assessment rather than one based around fear mongering. The truth is that genetically engineered organisms are as harmless for the body and environment as any average, traditionally produced food product. To best understand GMOs, it is important to elucidate their history. Despite being thought of as a recent blight on the food landscape, GMOs have a historical root that ties back to the beginning of time. That said, GMOs must first be defined. They are any organism who's DNA has been genetically manipulated to either express or eliminate certain traits. Although commonly thought of as solely being descriptive of produce, genetic modification can be used on any plant. Additionally, there has been recent progress made on genetically modifying animals and even humans. Although not specifically terminologized as "GMOs", farmers have been using primitive genetic engineering since the dawn of agriculture. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Invasive Species Essay From the smallest fly to the blue whale, from a blade of grass to a towering redwood, everything exploits the natural resources that Earth and its other inhabitants provide. In order to ensure its survival, an organism must assimilate itself into the food web or risk extinction at the hand of natural selection. Sometimes, a species is accidentally or purposefully introduced into a new area. These newcomers, commonly known as invasive species have no choice but to make themselves a part of the food web or die out. Unfortunately, that usually leads to fierce competition for resources between a local species and the invasive one, in which only the victor is allowed to survive. In a relatively short amount of time, the sudden pressure on resources can completely upset and destroy an ecosystem, taking the invasive species with it. With the invasive species destroyed, the ecosystem can slowly rebuild back to the way it was before. According to National Geographic, an invasive species is a "type of plant or animal that is not indigenous to a particular area and causes economic or environmental harm." (National Geographic).[6] Based on that definition, humans sound suspiciously like an invasive species, except on a global scale. If humanity does not decide to become more sustainable soon, we will suffer the same fate as other invasive species: extinction. Luckily, the pressures of human exploitation of the environment for resources can be mostly eliminated through the use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Against Gmos Essay If We Are What We Eat, What Have We Become? When I think of all–natural foods, my mind is filled with thoughts of free range chicken, organic vegetables, and farm fresh eggs. I envision the farmer, tending his crops; the baker selling his goods. One thing that does not come to mind is Genetically Modified Organisms. Everywhere we turn, GMOs are popping up at an alarming rate. The scary thing is that many people are not even aware they are consuming these products. As of now, companies who manufacture GMOs are not required to label their products as such. These foods that are consumed by millions of people every day are still permitted to be labeled as "all natural." Producers of genetically–modified organisms should be required to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon learning this, I vowed to never again eat a genetically modified apple. However, eating foods that are not genetically altered may be easier said than done. At present, manufacturers are not required to label their products as containing GMOs. According to the Food and Drug Administration, "foods developed using recombinant DNA (or rDNA) techniques would not be required to have special labeling to reveal that fact to consumers (Le Trent)." While this may seem like a harmless practice to many consumers, it can often lead a person to feel deceived and misinformed. According to a January 2012 lawsuit against Frito–Lay filed by Chris Shake, "modified organisms are created artificially in a laboratory by swapping genetic material across species to exhibit traits not naturally theirs (Dye)." The lawsuit also argues that the labeling of snack foods such as Tostitos and Sun Chips as "all–natural" should not be permitted sine they are made from genetically engineered corn and oils. In my opinion, "all–natural" means the ingredients can be found in nature, not in a Petri dish. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) proposes that a myriad of health problems including infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems, and organ damage are all associated with the ingestion of genetically modified ...
