Editor's Notes
Ethnocentrism â its evaluating other people from oneâs own vantage-point and describing them in oneâs own terms. With this kind of thinking other people would necessarily appear as inferior to oneself
Cultural relativism â is the opposite of ethno. It is the idea that all norms, beliefs and values are dependent on their cultural context and should be treated as such.
It suggests societies or culture are qualitatively different and have their own unique inner logic .
It understands alien societies in as unprejudiced a way as possible.
it contends that there is no such things as absolute right and wrong. The perceived right and wrong is specified by the moral code of each society
It is also a research method. Social Scientists strive to treat cultural differences as neither superior or interior . They try to understand research topics within the appropriate cultural context and examines their own biases and assumptions at the same time.
Importance of cultural relativism in attaining cultural understanding:
It will help in broadening our understanding of such difference and find a way to accept these other point of views while still upholding our own beliefs and principles
Disregard oneâs own viewpoints and cultural bias in trying to understand the conditions of a particular cultural practice or problem
It helps us to understand sensitive and foreign to us with fresh and objective mind
Doesnât mean that you canât have judgement, but it means your judgement in check to see more clearly and understand things better
The central point in cultural relativism is that in a particular cultural setting certain traits are right because they work well in that setting while other traits are wrong because they would clash painfully with parts of that culture.
