You have already learned about modal verbs. Let’s look at some common modal verbs and
their past equivalents.

These past modals serve the same purpose as their present counterparts. For example, we
use Must in the present to indicate obligation, and we use Had To in the past to indicate
obligation.
There is another set of modal verbs we can use to talk about the past that has it’s own set of
functions. Study the chart below.
