READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following story. Then answer questions about it.
Hannah met Jamie in the summer of 2004. It was Hannah’s 21st birthday and she
and her friends went to a club. They wanted to dance, but they didn’t like the
music so Hannah went to speak to the DJ. ‘This music is awful,’ she said. ‘Could
you play something else? The DJ looked at her and said ‘Don’t worry; I have the
perfect song for you.’
Two minutes later he said: ‘The next song is by Coldplay. It’s called Yellow and
it’s for a beautiful girl who is dancing over there.’ Hannah knew that the song
was for her because she was wearing a yellow dress. When Hannah and her
friends left the club the DJ was waiting at the door. ‘Hi, I’m Jamie,’ he said to
Hannah. ‘Can I see you again?’ So Hannah gave him her phone number.
Next day Jamie phoned Hannah and invited her to dinner. He took her to a very
romantic French restaurant and they talked all evening. After that Jamie and
Hannah saw each other every day. Every evening whenHannah finished work
they met at 5.30 in a coffee bar in the High Street. They were madly in love.
One evening in October, Hannah was at work. As usual she was going to meet
Jamie at 5.30. It was dark and it was raining. She looked at her watch. It was
5.20! She was going to be late! She ran to her car and got in. At 5.25 she was
driving along the High Street. She was going very fast because she was in a hurry.
Suddenly, a man ran across the road. He was wearing a dark coat so Hannah
didn’t see him until it was too late. Although she tried to stop, she hit the man.
Hannah panicked. She didn’t stop and she drove to the coffee bar as fast as she
could. But when she arrived Jamie wasn’t there. She phoned him, but his mobile
was turned off, so she waited for ten minutes and then went home.

PARTICIPLES
LOGRO
Present and past participles.
PAST AND PRESENT PARTICIPLES
Both present and past participles are used with the verbs to be and to have to
create common verb tenses, but they can also be used as adjectives. Since
there is a slight difference in meaning between the present and the past
participles when they are used as adjectives, it is very important to choose the
appropriate form.
►Present participles are formed by adding –ing to the verb stem. As an
adjective, a present participle modifies a noun that affects someone or
something else.
The new song is interesting.
The new song was interesting.

irregular forms may end in –d, –en, –n, or –t. As an adjective, a past participle
modifies a noun that is affected by someone or something else.
The fans are interested in the new song.
The fans were interested in the new song.
►Participles generally come before the noun they modify. They may also be
linked to the subject of the sentence by a linking verb such as to be or to feel.
The park is a frightening place at night.
Steve felt frightened as he walked alone in the park at night.

READING COMPREHENSION
Generally in the past, in each family there ws only one breadwinner, usually it
was the father. But now, as time passes by, more women are working , and that
helps to solve the family’s economic problems. All the expenses are shared now
and there’s even the chance to save the money. Before , all the expenses were
taken by the head of the family. Therefore, if the father los his job, or died. His
family for sure would have serious economical problems. Today, if one of the
parents stops working , the situation may not be the best but wouldn´t be the
worst either. Then, they’d have to consider that basic expenses , like clothing
and entertainment should also be taken into account.
But organization heps a lot and if families are sensible, hard times won’t be that
hard and there might even be a chnce to save.
How do you spend your monthly allowances?

Then answer questions about it. Hannah met Jamie in the summer of 2004. It was Hannah’s 21st birthday and she and her friends went to a club. They wanted to dance, but they didn’t like the music so Hannah went to speak to the DJ. ‘This music is awful,’ she said. ‘Could you play something else? The DJ looked at her and said ‘Don’t worry; I have the perfect song for you.’ Two minutes later he said: ‘The next song is by Coldplay. It’s called Yellow and it’s for a beautiful girl who is dancing over there.’ Hannah knew that the song was for her because she was wearing a yellow dress. When Hannah and her friends left the club the DJ was waiting at the door. ‘Hi, I’m Jamie,’ he said to Hannah. ‘Can I see you again?’ So Hannah gave him her phone number. Next day Jamie phoned Hannah and invited her to dinner. He took her to a very romantic French restaurant and they talked all evening. After that Jamie and Hannah saw each other every day. Every evening whenHannah finished work they met at 5.30 in a coffee bar in the High Street. They were madly in love. One evening in October, Hannah was at work. As usual she was going to meet Jamie at 5.30. It was dark and it was raining. She looked at her watch. It was 5.20! She was going to be late! She ran to her car and got in. At 5.25 she was driving along the High Street. She was going very fast because she was in a hurry. Suddenly, a man ran across the road. He was wearing a dark coat so Hannah didn’t see him until it was too late. Although she tried to stop, she hit the man. Hannah panicked. She didn’t stop and she drove to the coffee bar as fast as she could. But when she arrived Jamie wasn’t there. She phoned him, but his mobile was turned off, so she waited for ten minutes and then went home.

As an adjective, a present participle modifies a noun that affects someone or something else. The new song is interesting. The new song was interesting.

Which ones? How much is that vest? This one? How much are those pants? Those? The cotton one? Its $35 . The green ones? They’re $25. READING COMPREHENSION Generally in the past, in each family there ws only one breadwinner, usually it was the father. But now, as time passes by, more women are working , and that helps to solve the family’s economic problems. All the expenses are shared now and there’s even the chance to save the money. Before , all the expenses were taken by the head of the family. Therefore, if the father los his job, or died. His family for sure would have serious economical problems. Today, if one of the parents stops working , the situation may not be the best but wouldn´t be the worst either. Then, they’d have to consider that basic expenses , like clothing and entertainment should also be taken into account. But organization heps a lot and if families are sensible, hard times won’t be that hard and there might even be a chnce to save. How do you spend your monthly allowances? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________
