Hop ups
•  intended for low-level access requirements, typically for plastering or
decorating trades
•  typically aluminium or wood, with a small platform.

Why use aluminium?
• Light and easy to carry in comparison to wood.
Why use wood?
• Easier to use the step (with aluminium steps, users often step directly
onto the platform, which should be avoided).
• View in trade that more people fall when the alloy hop up is used in place
of wood.
Care must be taken with regards to access and egress.
Concentration on work can lead to operatives forgetting they are on
scaffold and stepping off.

As a general rule, if it sounds ridiculous it probably isn’t true.
Myth: HSE has banned stepladders.

The reality
We have not banned stepladders – nor have we banned ladders (April
2007).
• Yes: we want people to use the right equipment for the job.
• Yes: there are some common-sense rules for using them safely.
• No: they are not banned.
Despite this, the myth is regularly repeated and some firms have acted
upon it.

•  Ladders can be used if, after assessing the risks, the use of more
suitable work equipment is not justified because of the low risk and
short duration.
•  A large number of workers are seriously injured or killed using ladders
and stepladders each year.
•  So, for straightforward, short duration work stepladders and ladders
can be a good option, but they are not suitable for complex tasks for
long periods.
