This document describes a study conducted to determine if different opening class activities equally stimulate student motivation in an 8th grade science class. The study tested three activities: viewing a multimedia presentation, reading a passage, or viewing a picture. Surveys were used to collect data on student motivation and effort levels after each activity. Analysis of the survey results found that while multimedia presentations received slightly higher motivation ratings, overall none of the activities had a significant impact on student motivation. The study concluded that more research is needed with a larger sample size and modified methodology.
