  1. 1. Can Students Perceive the Feelings of Teachers in Education? SEYS 778 By: Steven Sheng

Questions <ul><li>If a teacher likes or dislikes a subject or a specific area of a subject, does the student pick up on those feelings? </li></ul><ul><li>Can students be influenced by how much their teacher likes or dislikes specific topics as to change their own feelings of those topics? </li></ul>
  3. 3. Anecdote <ul><li>If you can remember the first bit of advice about your attitude inside the classroom, what would it be? </li></ul>
  4. 4. Hypothesis Students will be able to, or can perceive how much teachers enjoy teaching specific subjects in their content area.
  5. 5. Method of Research <ul><li>Students and Teachers were given surveys asking their personal opinion of their interest in specific areas of their subject </li></ul><ul><li>Eg. If you were a Living Environment teacher, you were asked to rank how much you enjoyed teaching something such as Ecology, or Cellular Respiration etc. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Method of Research <ul><li>Teachers and Students from 4 different “Cohorts” were asked to participate in this survey. </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers and Students were given virtually identical surveys to ascertain their feelings towards specific topics. </li></ul>

  10. 10. Description of Sample <ul><li>Students were from the 6 th and 7 th Grade Science Classes </li></ul><ul><li>Students were all from the same public school in Queens </li></ul><ul><li>All students were interviewed during their 5 th grade year to be admitted to this school </li></ul>

Description of Sample <ul><li>There was a total of 107 students from the 6 th grade whom participated in this survey </li></ul><ul><li>There was a total of 139 students from the 7 th grade that participated in this survey </li></ul><ul><li>All four of the science teachers were also surveyed in this study </li></ul>

Description of Sample <ul><li>Students and Teachers were not given any additional directions to follow during the course of the survey or before it </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers gave the survey with themselves in the classroom during their classes </li></ul><ul><li>Each teacher gave the survey to two of their three classes </li></ul>
  13. 13. Results <ul><li>Students most frequent answer for most questions was 1 for their teachers. </li></ul><ul><li>Students for the most part said that their teacher(s) very much enjoyed the subject. </li></ul><ul><li>Eg. Teacher 1 Questions 6. </li></ul>

Teacher 2 gave her worst rating for topic number two. </li></ul><ul><li>Students results show that student believe that their teacher enjoyed the course. </li></ul><ul><li>However, students did not believe she enjoyed it a lot. </li></ul><ul><li>Average wise, students believed teacher 2 least enjoyed topic #1. </li></ul>

Results <ul><li>Correlations </li></ul><ul><li>Students showed very little correlation relationships in their own answers. </li></ul><ul><li>Highest Correlation relationship was .759 </li></ul><ul><li>This could mean that there is a lot of disconnect between the subject enough that students do not necessarily feel strongly for on topic and therefore would feel strongly for another topic. </li></ul>

Teacher Results <ul><li>It seems that teachers we able to better gauge their students feelings about the class </li></ul><ul><li>Teacher #3’s worst rated 4, 3 of them were also the least favorite of students </li></ul><ul><li>Teacher responds was 3,3,4,3 and students response was on average 2.6, 2.0, 2.5, 2.8 </li></ul>
  17. 17. Teacher Results <ul><li>Teachers 1 and 2 were more accurate with their predictions about student feelings as well. </li></ul><ul><li>Teacher 1 believed that students dislike topic 1, 2, and 7 the most. Students rated all 3 of them in the top 4. </li></ul>

Overall Findings <ul><li>Students do not seem to be able to perceive teachers’ feelings and attitudes towards specific topics </li></ul><ul><li>Students did in very few cases pick up on the overall negative or lack of enjoyment of teachers. </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers were able to better perceive their students feelings then vice versa. </li></ul>
  19. 19. Continued Analysis <ul><li>I want to run correlation tests between cohorts of students as well as between teachers. See if there are similarities between the topics they enjoyed or did not enjoy. </li></ul>
  20. 20. Continued Analysis <ul><li>I want to also run a Chi Squared test. </li></ul><ul><li>Using teachers predictions as the expected number, as well as having some neutral models, such has using 1 as the expected for all questions, then using 3 and then 5. </li></ul>
