Genre Analysis Across Genres
Over many years, genre has become an important role in everyone's life. Scholarly authors such as
Winsor, Pare, Berkenkotter, and Huckin, have noticed this trend and how it is important for people
to understand this concept in order to understand writing. Some of these trends are noticeable in
social groups such as businesses, educational settings, and other discourse communities in which
they all were simplified to a specific standard within their group. These genres will facilitate
activities, impact social relationships, identities, and structure communities. It is important to know
that not all communities will share common genres; in fact, they might vary heavily.
In the field of education, there is a difference between school reports of students and state reports of
students. It is common for these reports to have the same information, but at the same time, there is
also information that will vary. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genres have the basic ability to facilitate the activities in which a group or individual partakes in. As
we saw in the state and local reports, they had some similar information such as graphs and charts
with state or local assessments that students took, generic information on teachers and the school,
and also had to be accessible on varying platforms such as paper or computer to take into
consideration those who are not able to get either or. These ideas help shape the education
community such as who they are, and their goals to better students development. It is important for
education majors in college and current educators to understand how this process works so they get
the most out of the system. I know many education classes talk about teacher criteria and what is
expected of them. These norms have been created by state and government officials, and will always
play a role in how the education system

Genre Analysis Paper
A genre is a form of communication such as writing, a poster, or a blog within a particular
discipline. Genre analysis provides better understanding of how language is used within a significant
discourse community, and is a form of applied linguistics in which draws on linguistic and
sociolinguistic theory to clarify the nature of language use and language learning in an education
setting. In this paper, I will be analyzing some scientific abstracts for the engineering discourse
community. The analyzation will be focusing more on research articles, thesis, reviews, conference
proceeding, and engineering journals in electrical engineering. They both have one thing in common
which is an abstract. An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference

For the IEE papers, it was written and research performed by engineers. They have conducted a
thorough review of community literature resources, and used them to back up their arguments.
Research methodologies used are mentioned in both abstract and introduction sections to avoid
fabrications. The hypothesis of the researches are linked directly with the evidences that have
already known within the community. Although, more often the hypothesis might have been
supported by other evidence in the literature, any new revelations are essential in providing a strong
foundation upon which the next, higher level queries can be explored. It requires a well–designed
set of experiments, carefully and methodically implemented, analyzed in the most proper way, and
explained in adequate details so that it can be reused. The scientific advancement depends on such
rigorous work, and is an ideal in the community, as it would generate a literature of high integrity
that stands up over time and provides real value to the

Two Elements Of Genre Analysis
1. What are some genres that you feel you know well? How did you learn them? What are their
common rhetorical features?
I think I know well a narrative genre of essays. Narrative style of writing is very interesting for me,
because mostly it is based on real–life experience. In the past I had to write a lot of this kind of
assignment. I used to practice a lot, to start write good essays. With time, I understand how I have to
organize my writing assignment, and which type of vocabulary I need to use. Also, persuasive
essays are very interesting for me. They are more complicated for me. However, if you understand
well what is the main idea of the essay, and if you find a certain way to explain your audience all
details, the essay would be very

Genre Analysis Of Baseball
The game of baseball has been around for approximately 150 years and throughout its history there
have been different genres used to discuss or write about the sport. The two genres are a blog post
and a news article about win–loss projections for teams. Each genre will look at the sport and write
about the projections in a different way because they have different authors, audiences, and
purposes. The two different genres will also differ in the style and context because they have
different reasons and goals for their writings. The blog post will attempt to prove how the preseason
predictions made by the news article are unreliable. On the other hand, the news article will attempt
to show how the predictions are still trustworthy. The genres ... Show more content on

Following genre conventions, the use of "NJ math whiz" is an exciting and attention seeking way to
say a math professor (Casey). Casey uses this phrase in order to entice readers to click on his article.
The first sentence also draws readers in as it tells readers that Yankee and Red Sox fans "won't be
happy to hear" what the math professor predicted for their teams (Casey). Then, he describes the
background behind the article that a math professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology uses
mathematical formulas before every season to estimate the records of the MLB teams. The
professor, Bruce Bukiet, uses models that "he developed in the 1980s" and these formulas usually
rank in the "top 15%" of preseason predictions when compared to sports writers (Casey). Last year,
Casey explains that the professor successfully projected four of the six division winners to make the
playoffs. However, even the mathematical models cannot foresee the randomness that is included in
the game of baseball. The author's purpose for writing about the professors preseason predictions is
to share his interests in statistics through his journalism. The author's tone in the article comes from
the fact that it seems Casey is fascinated with not only baseball but also with the professors'

Genre Analysis Principles
In order to complete the DCR, it is necessary to understand a few key principles of genre analysis.
These principles include: Beaufort's five domains of knowledge, discourse community attitudes and
values, rhetorical and other textual features.
The rhetorical and other textual features can be divided into sub–principles such as content,
function, format and different rhetoric appeals. For genre analysis, the content rhetorical feature is
used to reflect the textual organization of different components of said genre. For example, a
research article genre is highly organized, and arranged in the following sections: an abstract, an
introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. This principle mainly looks at how the
content and material of the genre is displayed, and how this display is best ... Show more content on

The Wadsworth Guide explains how logos appeals to reason and logic, ethos appeals to credibility
and authority, and pathos appeals to emotions (page 183). These features, in the light of rhetor, are
used to see how the genre garners the attention of the audience.
Beaufort's five domains are genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, subject matter knowledge,
writing process knowledge, and discourse community knowledge. These domains are vital to the
process of genre analysis, and the one discussed in the Data Collection Report is subject matter
knowledge.
Subject matter knowledge pertains to knowledge of expertise for said discourse community. In the
genre analysis, we look at how the rhetor of the genre displays the extent of expertise about the
discourse community, as well as how the genre adds to existing subject matter knowledge.
The last section of the genre analysis was the critique. This section of the genre analysis pertains to
suggestion of possible changes in them by me. I based my critique on recommendations for genre
change in your analysis that would make the genre more

Crime Drama Genre Analysis
The crime drama genre has persevered through numerous progressions since the times of 'Dickson
of Dock Green' (1955–1976) in the UK alongside 'Dick Tracy' (1950–1952) in the USA. The natural
progression inside crime genre saw them in the end showing police procedural's. This was a first for
TV, the audience not just observed the crime and the apprehension of the criminal, yet out of the
blue, the entire crime solving network was opened for the crowd to see. Crime scene investigation
and lawful administration where displayed inside the shows. This developed into crime shows that
concentrated exclusively on these different components that were beforehand hidden. Shows, for
example, 'Cagney and Lacey' (1982–1988), 'Slope Street Blues' (1981–1987), ... Show more content

gang culture plays a big part inside the program, through social depravity and social slants, groups

understanding of who is responsible for that gang. In the case of of 'The Shield', Mackay is sitting at
the top of every one of the gangs hierarchies, by taking out rival gangs he figures out how to clutch

Communicative Event Genre Analysis
The second criteria that turns a class of communicative events into genre is some shared set of
communicative purpose and not similar forms or content. Swales (1990) discuss communicative
purpose as a starting point for defining genre. In the case of newspaper culture columns,
communicative purpose of each culture columns should be analyzed and then it will be determined
if they share a set of communicative purposes and further a class of communicative events or not.
The third criterion for a genre has to apply on the present features in all instances of a particular
genre. For instance every session of teaching English with English teacher might be regarded as
prototype teaching. Swales (1990) stated that whereas communicative purpose is the

Genre Analysis Of Mabel
One genre of podcast that I find intriguing for various nostalgic and inexplicably self–punitive
reasons, is that which explores the eeriness of the world, reminiscent in ways of old–time horror
radio shows. "Mabel" is a fictional narrative podcast written and produced by Becca De La Rosa
that follows the mysterious experiences of Anna Limon, the in–home caregiver of Sally Martin, an
elderly woman living in the remote countryside. In the first episode of "Mabel," "The Letters," Anna
tries to get in contact with Sally's estranged granddaughter, Mabel, after finding a box of unopened
letters in the attic that sends the elderly woman into a fit of terror. "Sword and Scale" is a non–
fiction narrative podcast hosted by Mike Boudet in which each ... Show more content on

In likeness to the beginning of "The Letters," Boudet's account of Bruce's case begins with
unsettling music, which is a common motif that continues throughout the episode. On the other
hand, however, when he is recounting the night of the murders from the perspective of a neighbour,
Boudet includes a cheesy gunshot sound effect that takes away from the gravity of the moment.
There are also a number of moments where unsettling music is played for a significant period of
time, around 15–20 seconds, after Boudet reveals a key part of the story that in my opinion, felt
awkwardly lengthy. While I found the music itself to be effective in evoking feelings of unease, the
timing of certain musical elements and sound effects was not quite right and thus distracting at

The Western Genre: An Analysis of its History and Rise and...
The Classic Western genre is dead. Western films created now are not considered Classic Western,
but are instead categorized in the Post–Western form. This happened because the overuse of filmic
codes in the Western genre eventually led to predictability in the films. These "genre film cycles"
occur because of the overuse of predictability. Film cycles are when a genre and its conventions
become overused to the point of death to that specific genre. For example, if the film The Good, The
Bad, and The Ugly (1966) were shown in a theater today people wonder why they were watching it,
because they already knew what to expect from the typical western codes, such as good guys versus
bad guys, gunfights, horse chases, Indians, frontier land, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Before going in–depth to the history of the Western genre, it is important to note the film
conventions of the genre because they are incredibly influential to the movement of the genre cycle.
The structure of the Classic Western is set up with a hero and a villain in a town. Will Wright says,
"Each film is the story of a hero who is somehow estranged from his society but on whose ability
rests the fate of that society. The villains threatened the society until the hero acts to protect and save
it" (Wright, 1975). This is the classical plot for a western, while a vengeance plot in the western is
"the vengeance hero leaves the society because of his strength and their weakness and abandons his
fight because of these same values (of society)" (Wright, 1975). Some of these conventions can also
be seen as cliché because of the myths tied together with the Western. These include opening scenes
of vast landscapes or when "a cowboy makes a dramatic entrance through the batwing saloon doors,
the man playing the piano abruptly stops" (Varner, 2008) or the more obvious, the hero riding off
into the sunset at the end of the film. (Varner, 2008) The Western conventions then evolve over time
until the end of the Classic Westerns, in which Spaghetti Westerns, parodies, and Post Westerns can
easily point out the conventions and use them to make a new story.
To begin, America during the late 19th century and early 20th century was on

The Public Enemy Genre Analysis
To define a film by a certain genre, there are several elements and signatures that a film will display
in order to signify its place amongst the genre. A film from the gangster genre is characterized by
violence and lawlessness of american capitalism and The American Dream. The short lived classical
era of the gangster genre in Hollywood is also greatly influenced by the production code which
manifested the iconic moral narrative of the gangster genre. William A. Wellman's 1931 film The
Public Enemy can be considered a film of the gangster genre when one examines the conflict with
the American dream, the rise and fall of the protagonist Tom Powers, as well as the visual
storytelling employed to support the narrative.

As a film, The Public Enemy explores this relationship between crime and the American dream
through Tom's journey as a bootlegger as he becomes increasingly more violent. This conflict and
the violence is ultimately the reason Tom must die at the end of the film.
Another element of the gangster genre that is seen in Wellman's film is the rise and fall trajectory of
the central gangster protagonist. In order to avoid glamorizing the life of a gangster and his
perverted American Dream, his crimes must be punished. This is a central element to any gangster
film created under the auspices of the production code. To obey the rules and regulation of the PCA,
any gangster in film will live "a short but glamorous life..that reaffirms the audience's knowledge
that in Hollywood, lawlessness cannot go unpunished" (Køhlert 857). The era under the PCA shaped
the narrative of the gangster genre to include the death of essentially every gangster protagonist. In
one of the most powerful scenes of the film, after Tom has taken revenge on the rival members, he
stumbles, shot, clutching his chest into the raining streets and gutter (The Public Enemy). He is
alone, isolated by the rain, and likely going to die. This is not a character the audience is supposed to
sympathize with, and this is exactly to goal of the gangster genre. After the audience has seen
Powers rise through the world of crime starting as a little boy

This film genre analysis will identify, scruitinies and discuss the various and diverse filmmaking
elements of the Wachowski's Sci–fi/Action epic, The Matrix (1999), and how they demonstrate the
typical codes and conventions of the action subset genres, Western and Asian martial arts.
Specifically, the climactic scene of The Matrix (01:52:56 – 01:58:49) portraying the film's main
character, Neo's fight with the antagonistic agent Mr Smith in an underground subway station, will

Elements such as, the exhibition and portrayal of various Asian fighting styles like kung fu and
drunken boxing, and the variation of them in brawls, substantial use of sound effects when receiving
and delivering blows, to both enhance and intensify the severity of the fight are all evident in these
films. In particular, one of the most well know Asian martial arts films, Lo Wei's Fist of Fury
starring the legendary and iconic Bruce Lee employs all mentioned conventions. Specifically, a
scene in which Bruce Lee fights a conglomeration of adversaries utilising mixed martial arts and
kung fu (2) a heavy use of mouth noises and diegetic SFX are used in conjunction with extremely
fast paced fighting. This is evident in The Matrix scene when Neo and Mr Smith are forced to fight
hand to hand rather than using their weapons. Neo exercises the Asian fighting style, Kung fu. (3)

produce loud and distinct grunts and groans when hit, and loud 'swoosh' sounds as their hands and

technical codes have been used to convey the narrative of the scene and

Rhetoric And Genre Analysis
In my Rhetoric and Genre essay on, Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn I honestly tried my best to
explain how the use of genre was ideal to explain Dunn's rhetoric in the book. I started of by
bringing out what I believe were the main points that Dunn wanted to get to his readers. This points
being the importance of critical thinking, communication and language and what would happen if
we lacked on each of them. When it came to writing on why I believed these points were best told in

Then I talked about language and how that was connected to the genre. When it came to language

letters how difficult and the people felt and thought about not being to write properly. Not only did it
fuse their ability to communicate but complicated day to day tasks. Lastly I referred back to
communication and how that connected to genre. For this one I would say the genre showed the
most effectively what the lack of communication does to people. Due to the fact that letters are a
way of communicating one can see how as the letters get shorter and it get harder to communicate
people become miserable and lonely . This showing how the letters were needed to show how lack
of critical thinking can affect others and how they think of you and it makes you seem, quite foolish
as in this book. How the lack of language can shorten are communication and how that being the

Genre Analysis of Movie Review Essay

However, how to write movie review is still remain unclear to students. Some student download a

system of analysis by which observations are made on the repeated communicative functions found

The second level grammatical–rhetorical analysis aims to investigate the relationship between
grammatical choice and rhetorical function in written English for science and technology. Discourse
analysis as interaction represents the third level of language description. Most importantly,
interactional analysis outlines the concept of interpretation of discourse by the reader or listener.
Discourse analysis appears to have steadily moved from surface–level analysis to a deeper
description of language use. However, in the context of language teaching for specific purposes,
applied discourse analysis seems to represent a rather narrow description of language in use and is
inadequate in its explanation. In order to introduce a thick description of language in use, it is
necessary to combine socio–cultural and psycholinguistic aspects of text–construction and
interpretation with linguistic insights to answer the question: why are specific discourse–genres
written and used by the specialist communities the way they are? Genre analysis as an insightful
description of English for specific purpose texts has become a useful and powerful tool to arrive at
significant form–function correlations which can be utilized for a number of applied linguistic
purposes. CARS, which means create a research space is a well–known model for conducting the

Romantic Comedy Genre Analysis
Genre in film began as a sort of "commercial tool" which showed audiences recognizable film
content in order to attract customers (Campbell and Swenson). As the film industry grew, this
content began to be more specialized, allowing the audience to know exactly what to expect from
the film they were seeing. For example, films within the same genre share the same myths,
iconography, and conventions. This means they have similarities in aspects such as plot, characters,
themes, moods, ways of doing things particular to that genre, and repeated visual and oral elements
such as images and sounds. Often genre films are influenced by the social culture of the time in
which they are produced, and the content in the film tend to propose a solution to the current
problems within society. These resolutions are often portrayed by a main protagonists who is
presented with a conflict; the film then concludes with the character reaching a solution to the
problem that is not only logical, but moral as well. Within the romantic comedy genre specifically,
the storyline usually follows a couple rather than a protagonist. The romantic comedy, or rom com,
genre has often been ruled "a purely escapist and conservative genre, accused of unquestioningly
presenting unrealistic romantic fantasies for passive audiences" (MacDowell). From its earliest days,
romantic comedy films have mostly focused on finding romance and the idea that love is the key to
a fulfilled and delighted life. However, this

Analysis Of The Film Noir/Gangster Genre
The category of film one chooses or can write is called a genre, they are identifiable types,
categories, classifications or groups of films that contain conventions (Dercksen, 2015), in other

will be analyzed. These three visual narratives are; the horror film genre, the Film Noir/ Gangster

Horror is defined as a representation for the need of suppressing uncomfortable and disturbing

The characters are usually materialistic, street–smart and self–destructive (Dirks, 2018) this is
expressed in the film Goodfellas (1990) which is based off the portrayal of the life of Henry Hill, an
FBI informant. In the Do you think I'm funny scene, the mobster who was loud and speaking the
loudest fell into the cliché character category as his behavior was self–destructive and boisterous.
The gangster's success is typically followed by his failure (Wilson, 2015). The gangster film
provides a critical perspective on the American Dream that warns humans of the consequences
associated with consumerism and greed (Hoffman, 2014). This genre involves a lot of brutality
(Hoffman, 2014) which in the scene of Goodfellas is exhibited when a bottle was smashed on the
head of a waiter who was speaking to the mobster. The film noir brings up a series of generic,
stylistic or traits from Hollywood films between a specific period of time, for example; the
characters and stories (Femmes Fatales hiring private eyes). The Film noir also includes urban
settings (Naremore, n.d.) one of which is seen in the movie Goodfellas where the I'm funny how
scene is shot in a busy restaurant in an urban area. The Iconography of Film Noir can be found in the
clothing of the characters which consist of suits and/or snap–brim hats which were seen in the movie
Goodfellas. The primary moods of film noir were melancholy, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia
(Dirks, 2018). Film noir films showed the dark side of humans (Dirks, 2018) which is seen in the
boisterous and drunk behaviors of the characters in the I'm funny how scene of Goodfellas. The
lighting in Film Noir films can be describes as expressionistic (Dirks, 2018) meaning that it was

My process for creating this project was fairly simple. Upon being informed of this assignment, my

The Application Of Genre Analysis And Phraseology
The application of genre analysis and phraseology has great potential to inform this kind of research
and practice, enabling us to receive a more thorough understanding of how language is used in a
particular context and/or in a particular genre. In this study, the textual analysis included inter–rater
reliability analysis performed by two university instructors to code a portion of the texts. The
analysis reached a satisfactory level of agreement in the four internal sections in the main study. In
addition, the selection of multiword combinations to be included in the pedagogically useful list,
apart from a corpus–based approach relying on frequency of occurrence of the lexical units, with
instructors' insights come into play, and therefore the task is much facilitated. These procedures
demonstrate a thorough perspective on conducting textual analysis to receive in–depth and specific
information, verify the outcomes, and ensure that the results of this study are accurate and reliable.
10.3.2 Pedagogical implications
As for novice writers and graduate students, knowledge concerning rhetorical organisation of texts
as well as their communicative purposes identified and phraseological patterns obtained from this
study can effectively improve novice writers and graduate students' understanding on academic
reading and writing RAs in general. The insights into how RAs in applied linguistics, particularly
those published in the TCI database, are constructed can allow them to

Western Genre Analysis
Coming into Writing 39B I did not know what to expect of the western genre, but I became eager to
learn more about the genre as I was exposed to the films. During the second lecture, I felt as though
I knew very little about the concept so I became too shy to discuss the character traits. That later
changed when a peer of mine described a cowboy's physical and metaphorical traits. That provoked
a flashbulb memory to occur from when I was a child. I remembered always walking into my
mother's room and seeing her watching old western style, black and white movies that were very
comical to me but to her they were very interesting. I would always ask her why she watched such
boring, terribly directed movies and she would simply respond, "This is

Crime Movie Genre Analysis
Movie genres are used to categorize movies depending on the similarity of characteristics in the
story elements from which the viewers can create an emotional reaction or social construction about
the movies. Other than the storyline, the genre classification takes into account the characters, the
setting, the style and the mood of the movie. They can also be distinguished from one another by
their narrative structures, themes, and the setting used during the making of the movies. The movie
classifications can also be differentiated by considering the effect they have on the audience in terms
of expectations and demand. In certain instances, the movie genres overlap to combine in a single

Scarface: Film Genre Analysis
A genre is a category, and in film it is a way to describe the best fit of the direction a movie will
display. There are many subgenres within a genre that also help to give definition. Genres are used
to support a system of grouping instead of disarray by leaving others to decipher it themselves.
Scarface is a crime film that also has the sub–genre of gangster. Even though it does not dramatize a
social statement on a need for change, Scarface fits into the crime/gangster genre because it
distinctly characterizes the severe bloodshed and assaults that are customary in the world of
organized crime and demonstrates the calamity of the gangster lifestyle; however, oddly enough
with the way the murders occurred it also fits into the horror film genre as well. The crime genre is
about a crime that is being committed or was committed and may sometimes be an account of a
criminal's life. Scarface displays many criminal that can blow one's mind and is in many ways an
account of Montana's life as a drug lord. The film falls into the subgenre of crime, as a "gangster"

Star Wars Genre Analysis Essay
A genre analysis of Star Wars: The Force Awakens
There was much excitement, surrounding the release of the long awaited Star Wars: The Force
Awakens (Abrams 2015), which takes place thirty years after the closure of Star Wars: Return of the
Jedi ((Marquand 1983). In review of the film, Peter Bradshaw commented that "JJ Abrams banishes
memories of George Lucas's prequels", describing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as an
"outrageously exciting and romantic return to a world you hadn't realised you'd missed so much"
(Bradshaw 2015). The use of the word 'romantic' is particularly interesting, when taking into
account Blair Davis' comment that "sci–fi was often paired with other genres" (Davis 2013) in the
production of films; indeed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens does seem to follow that pattern of
amalgamation, with IMDb describing the film as "Action, Adventure, Fantasy" (IMDb 2015).

Film Analysis Of The Romantic Genre And Movie Rocky
Genre theory is used to study films and put them into a classification so that audiences know what
type of film it is before they see it. Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes
the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub–genre category.
Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light–hearted, humorous story involving
people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or
gross–out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic
comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre
and how this movie fits the gangster genre. Romantic comedy films create a comic climate through
a series of cues to the audience: subject matter is treated as trivial, jokes and physical humor make
fun of events, and characters are protected from harm (Grindon Leger (2015). Romantic comedy
films usually have a couple that meet and fall in love in some way throughout the movie. In the
movie Rocky Sylvester Stallone as Rocky meets Adrian at the pet shop and realizes she is the
women he wants to be with. Rocky is a want to be boxer at the time who wants to be a professional
boxer and knows Adrian's brother from the gym. When Rocky sees Adrian through the window of
the pet shop he uses the excuse that he buys a fish and asks her out. Adrian agrees and she is a very
bashful lady, she dresses and looks very homely. Rocky and Adrian starting dating and she supports
him through his boxing career. The couple falls in love and they get married. Adrian starts dressing
nice and gets contacts to the point you see her transform into a beautiful lady by the end of the film.
The genre of Romantic comedy is pairing two individuals into a couple with some comedy which
Rocky proves to have. The comedy part would be where Adrian asks Rocky why he boxes and he
says "because he can't dance or sing". Throughout the film there are little conventions to show the
comedy. The film Rocky the first convention would be the setting. In the film it is set in 1976 in the
low income part of Philadelphia. This shows the Rocky and Adrian started out

Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis
The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what
exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word "genre is it describes either a novel,
film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or "rules" of what defines that specific genre.
Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a
novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes
or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or
drama.

They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained that it
shouldn't be classified as a fantasy novel. Both explain how genres are now being mixed and that
sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil
Gaiman's statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn't determine genre and
that genres only exist when there's an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly
agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns
that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and writers take these specifications too
seriously, and believe that if you don't follow the certain "standards" of what makes a specific genre,
they believe that it is strange. However, I don't agree with Ishiguro when he states "Books are
serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That
kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn't attach itself to film"
(Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people the same way that books can motivate

Generally, resumes are built and created in early adulthood by the author them self. There are a few

like to show off their own personal qualifications, education, and academic and professional

Genre Analysis
By Aleksandar Najdovski
Genre is a French word meaning 'type or 'kind' (Genre, 2016). The film industry has been around for
at least 100 years. The evolution of entertainment is growing rapidly through the use of media. And
as these years go on, films have begun to fit into specific genres, and are important to appeal to the
different types of audiences. Films can be described to genre in different types of ways, such as
stars, director and narrative to help identify what genre the film is (Neale, 1990, pg. 49). Genre in
films has become common because it helps give the audience a different expectation. One specific
genre of film is a horror. Horror is a genre that tries to create, panic, dread and fear for the audience.

The producers will develop a test and the audience will tell the producers whether it is something
they want to see or they are not going to see. This can affect the next text to be produced in an
attempt to conform to the audience demands. Looking at the development of different types of
genres and the development of films within the same genre, it's possible to look at similarities and
differences and identify changes in society and audience ideologies and tastes.
Horror is designed to scare, cause alarm and dread, while also entertaining the audience at the same
time in a cathartic experience (Dirk, 2016). Horror films are meant for a specific type of audience
that enjoy scary films. Dirks (Tim, 2016) approach to genre horror, is that films went back as 100
years ago, from the earliest days our vivid imagination in seeing ghosts in the shadows to be
connected emotionally of the unknown, and fear things that are improbable. You watch a horror
film, it makes you aware of the scary surroundings, the essence of fear itself, without actually being
in any sorts of danger. Dirks argues that there is a fun and thrill factor in being frightened, or
watching something disturbing. It gives you that feeling of an adrenaline rush, as well as having that
feeling someone is actually next to you lurking in the dark (Dirk, 2016).

words, if you are able to persuade someone, you can basically get anything you want. Today, many
expert writers utilizes genre conventions to state their purpose and to persuade their audience. First
of all, what is a genre convention? Genre convention is defined as a communication or a connection

In the article, the most repetitive word that was used was biotechnology. When the word

example is when the author stated, "Biotechnology cannot provide secure food and reduce poverty
during the development world.(Lesik,2017)" Therefore, this will inform and make the reader
understand that biotechnology is being discussed in the paragraph. Another language that the author
used was their "point of view". The author used the third person point of view to provide evidence
for his article. By using the third person point of view, it made his article sound more effective and
scholarly, because he does not use the words, "I" or "we".
The second genre convention that the author used was structure. For a scientific journal article, the
structure usually contains different sections such as an introduction, material/methods, data, results,
and a conclusion. The purpose of having this structure is to organize the information, and to make it
easier to identify for readers. In my article, the article has the same structure, but it does not have the

Movie Analysis : Film And Film Genre Essay
There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but
there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated,
science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also
specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre. An animated
movie is a drawing, painted, or digitally created film that uses stop–frame cinematography to
simulate movement. The best example of an animated movie is Spirited Away. This film came out in
2001 and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film revolves around Chihiro, a girl who must grow
up quickly and save her parents from a spirit world. The theme of the film is that there is both good
and evil in the world and part of growing up is finding the line between good and evil. In almost
every animated film you will find a family friend theme and a fast paced story. This is mainly
because most animated films are aimed toward children and families. As a result of this, animated
films usually revolve around growing up and taking responsibility, or other themes that will benefit
children. Spirited Away is the best example of an animated movie because it is fast paced, has great
themes, and is engaging to both children and adults. When children watch Spirited Away they will
love the themes or growing up and taking responsibility and exploring the fantasy world inside the
film. Adults will also

Genre analysis is an attempt to explain why members of specific discourse communities employ
different and special ways of using language. Sociocultural aspects of language and existing
differences among the contexts in which a language is used may, to some extent, answer this
question. In addition, cognitive strategies applied by the speakers or writers may also play a role
since the members of each language community use different strategies to achieve their desired
goals (Bhatia, 1996). According to a definition given by Martin (1985), "genres are how things get

Negative politeness, on the other hand, is shown when a person wants to avoid intrusion, defer to
someone by giving a superior form of address such as sir, apologize for something wrong she has
done.
Having the definition of politeness and the intended purpose of the study, the first thing to be done is
to examine the particular organization of the text, the use of a particular vocabulary and the use of
particular grammatical structure. That is to say that the whole linguistic materials employed in this
context, which altogether make the rhetorical strategies of the context to fulfill the purpose of
politeness, should also be thoroughly examined.
The second thing to be investigated is to analyze the relationship between the sender of the message
and its receiver. Here in the current context, the lawyer or her client (either of the accuser or the
accused) is the sender of the message and the judge (or the jury) is the receiver.
The kind of relationship between these individuals should also be defined. Politeness is expected to
be observed from inferiors to superiors and here the receiver of the message has the authority and
power to decide on behalf of the receiver. Therefore, it can be expected here that the linguistic
materials used by the lawyers and her clients in the court reflect courtesy.
Regarding the situational context, it is observed that sender tries to influence the receiver about the
decisions being made later. On

I think the hardest part of this assignment is making sure that the article that I am translating to
reflects the characteristics of the actual genre. Although this was initially challenging, I was able to
overcome these confusion by studying more about both the magazine article and the scientific
journal and analyzing the writing conventions that each of these genres have. By studying more
about the genres and actually translating the piece myself, I was able to get a deeper understanding
of the writing choices and the purpose of these two genres. As mentioned in Kerry Dirk's
"Navigating Genres" article, each genre has certain characteristics or conventions that define them
(Dirk, 258). This assignment helped me understand the choices that authors made in these two
genres in order to attract their own target audience and purpose. For example, I learned that
entertainment articles like to use words such as "shocking" and "exclusive news" because they are
trying to attract readers while scientific journals prefer less of this. In addition to using Dirk's
"Navigating Genres" article, I also used Mike Bunn's "How to Read Like a Writer" article to help
me in this translating process. As explained by Bunn, when we read like a writer, we identify some
of the choices that the authors made so then we could have better understanding of how such
choices might appear in our own writing (Bunn, 22). By learning how to read like a writer and
applying it to reading the original article, I was able to notice the choices that she had made and
decide which parts of it that I would want to keep for the new translated

Genre Analysis Across Genres

  • 1. Genre Analysis Across Genres Over many years, genre has become an important role in everyone's life. Scholarly authors such as Winsor, Pare, Berkenkotter, and Huckin, have noticed this trend and how it is important for people to understand this concept in order to understand writing. Some of these trends are noticeable in social groups such as businesses, educational settings, and other discourse communities in which they all were simplified to a specific standard within their group. These genres will facilitate activities, impact social relationships, identities, and structure communities. It is important to know that not all communities will share common genres; in fact, they might vary heavily. In the field of education, there is a difference between school reports of students and state reports of students. It is common for these reports to have the same information, but at the same time, there is also information that will vary. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Genres have the basic ability to facilitate the activities in which a group or individual partakes in. As we saw in the state and local reports, they had some similar information such as graphs and charts with state or local assessments that students took, generic information on teachers and the school, and also had to be accessible on varying platforms such as paper or computer to take into consideration those who are not able to get either or. These ideas help shape the education community such as who they are, and their goals to better students development. It is important for education majors in college and current educators to understand how this process works so they get the most out of the system. I know many education classes talk about teacher criteria and what is expected of them. These norms have been created by state and government officials, and will always play a role in how the education system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Genre Analysis Paper A genre is a form of communication such as writing, a poster, or a blog within a particular discipline. Genre analysis provides better understanding of how language is used within a significant discourse community, and is a form of applied linguistics in which draws on linguistic and sociolinguistic theory to clarify the nature of language use and language learning in an education setting. In this paper, I will be analyzing some scientific abstracts for the engineering discourse community. The analyzation will be focusing more on research articles, thesis, reviews, conference proceeding, and engineering journals in electrical engineering. They both have one thing in common which is an abstract. An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the IEE papers, it was written and research performed by engineers. They have conducted a thorough review of community literature resources, and used them to back up their arguments. Research methodologies used are mentioned in both abstract and introduction sections to avoid fabrications. The hypothesis of the researches are linked directly with the evidences that have already known within the community. Although, more often the hypothesis might have been supported by other evidence in the literature, any new revelations are essential in providing a strong foundation upon which the next, higher level queries can be explored. It requires a well–designed set of experiments, carefully and methodically implemented, analyzed in the most proper way, and explained in adequate details so that it can be reused. The scientific advancement depends on such rigorous work, and is an ideal in the community, as it would generate a literature of high integrity that stands up over time and provides real value to the ... • 5. Two Elements Of Genre Analysis 1. What are some genres that you feel you know well? How did you learn them? What are their common rhetorical features? I think I know well a narrative genre of essays. Narrative style of writing is very interesting for me, because mostly it is based on real–life experience. In the past I had to write a lot of this kind of assignment. I used to practice a lot, to start write good essays. With time, I understand how I have to organize my writing assignment, and which type of vocabulary I need to use. Also, persuasive essays are very interesting for me. They are more complicated for me. However, if you understand well what is the main idea of the essay, and if you find a certain way to explain your audience all details, the essay would be very ... • 7. Genre Analysis Of Baseball The game of baseball has been around for approximately 150 years and throughout its history there have been different genres used to discuss or write about the sport. The two genres are a blog post and a news article about win–loss projections for teams. Each genre will look at the sport and write about the projections in a different way because they have different authors, audiences, and purposes. The two different genres will also differ in the style and context because they have different reasons and goals for their writings. The blog post will attempt to prove how the preseason predictions made by the news article are unreliable. On the other hand, the news article will attempt to show how the predictions are still trustworthy. The genres ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following genre conventions, the use of "NJ math whiz" is an exciting and attention seeking way to say a math professor (Casey). Casey uses this phrase in order to entice readers to click on his article. The first sentence also draws readers in as it tells readers that Yankee and Red Sox fans "won't be happy to hear" what the math professor predicted for their teams (Casey). Then, he describes the background behind the article that a math professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology uses mathematical formulas before every season to estimate the records of the MLB teams. The professor, Bruce Bukiet, uses models that "he developed in the 1980s" and these formulas usually rank in the "top 15%" of preseason predictions when compared to sports writers (Casey). Last year, Casey explains that the professor successfully projected four of the six division winners to make the playoffs. However, even the mathematical models cannot foresee the randomness that is included in the game of baseball. The author's purpose for writing about the professors preseason predictions is to share his interests in statistics through his journalism. The author's tone in the article comes from the fact that it seems Casey is fascinated with not only baseball but also with the professors' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Genre Analysis Principles In order to complete the DCR, it is necessary to understand a few key principles of genre analysis. These principles include: Beaufort's five domains of knowledge, discourse community attitudes and values, rhetorical and other textual features. The rhetorical and other textual features can be divided into sub–principles such as content, function, format and different rhetoric appeals. For genre analysis, the content rhetorical feature is used to reflect the textual organization of different components of said genre. For example, a research article genre is highly organized, and arranged in the following sections: an abstract, an introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. This principle mainly looks at how the content and material of the genre is displayed, and how this display is best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Wadsworth Guide explains how logos appeals to reason and logic, ethos appeals to credibility and authority, and pathos appeals to emotions (page 183). These features, in the light of rhetor, are used to see how the genre garners the attention of the audience. Beaufort's five domains are genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, and discourse community knowledge. These domains are vital to the process of genre analysis, and the one discussed in the Data Collection Report is subject matter knowledge. Subject matter knowledge pertains to knowledge of expertise for said discourse community. In the genre analysis, we look at how the rhetor of the genre displays the extent of expertise about the discourse community, as well as how the genre adds to existing subject matter knowledge. The last section of the genre analysis was the critique. This section of the genre analysis pertains to suggestion of possible changes in them by me. Crime Drama Genre Analysis The crime drama genre has persevered through numerous progressions since the times of 'Dickson of Dock Green' (1955–1976) in the UK alongside 'Dick Tracy' (1950–1952) in the USA. The natural progression inside crime genre saw them in the end showing police procedural's. • 15. Genre Analysis Of Mabel One genre of podcast that I find intriguing for various nostalgic and inexplicably self–punitive reasons, is that which explores the eeriness of the world, reminiscent in ways of old–time horror radio shows. "Mabel" is a fictional narrative podcast written and produced by Becca De La Rosa that follows the mysterious experiences of Anna Limon, the in–home caregiver of Sally Martin, an elderly woman living in the remote countryside. In the first episode of "Mabel," "The Letters," Anna tries to get in contact with Sally's estranged granddaughter, Mabel, after finding a box of unopened letters in the attic that sends the elderly woman into a fit of terror. "Sword and Scale" is a non– fiction narrative podcast hosted by Mike Boudet in which each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In likeness to the beginning of "The Letters," Boudet's account of Bruce's case begins with unsettling music, which is a common motif that continues throughout the episode. On the other hand, however, when he is recounting the night of the murders from the perspective of a neighbour, Boudet includes a cheesy gunshot sound effect that takes away from the gravity of the moment. There are also a number of moments where unsettling music is played for a significant period of time, around 15–20 seconds, after Boudet reveals a key part of the story that in my opinion, felt awkwardly lengthy. While I found the music itself to be effective in evoking feelings of unease, the timing of certain musical elements and sound effects was not quite right and thus distracting at ... • 17. The Western Genre: An Analysis of its History and Rise and... The Classic Western genre is dead. Western films created now are not considered Classic Western, but are instead categorized in the Post–Western form. This happened because the overuse of filmic codes in the Western genre eventually led to predictability in the films. These "genre film cycles" occur because of the overuse of predictability. Film cycles are when a genre and its conventions become overused to the point of death to that specific genre. For example, if the film The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966) were shown in a theater today people wonder why they were watching it, because they already knew what to expect from the typical western codes, such as good guys versus bad guys, gunfights, horse chases, Indians, frontier land, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before going in–depth to the history of the Western genre, it is important to note the film conventions of the genre because they are incredibly influential to the movement of the genre cycle. The structure of the Classic Western is set up with a hero and a villain in a town. Will Wright says, "Each film is the story of a hero who is somehow estranged from his society but on whose ability rests the fate of that society. The villains threatened the society until the hero acts to protect and save it" (Wright, 1975). This is the classical plot for a western, while a vengeance plot in the western is "the vengeance hero leaves the society because of his strength and their weakness and abandons his fight because of these same values (of society)" (Wright, 1975). Some of these conventions can also be seen as cliché because of the myths tied together with the Western. These include opening scenes of vast landscapes or when "a cowboy makes a dramatic entrance through the batwing saloon doors, the man playing the piano abruptly stops" (Varner, 2008) or the more obvious, the hero riding off into the sunset at the end of the film. (Varner, 2008) The Western conventions then evolve over time until the end of the Classic Westerns, in which Spaghetti Westerns, parodies, and Post Westerns can easily point out the conventions and use them to make a new story. To begin, America during the late 19th century and early 20th century was on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Public Enemy Genre Analysis To define a film by a certain genre, there are several elements and signatures that a film will display in order to signify its place amongst the genre. A film from the gangster genre is characterized by violence and lawlessness of american capitalism and The American Dream. The short lived classical era of the gangster genre in Hollywood is also greatly influenced by the production code which manifested the iconic moral narrative of the gangster genre. William A. Wellman's 1931 film The Public Enemy can be considered a film of the gangster genre when one examines the conflict with the American dream, the rise and fall of the protagonist Tom Powers, as well as the visual storytelling employed to support the narrative. As a film, The Public Enemy explores this relationship between crime and the American dream through Tom's journey as a bootlegger as he becomes increasingly more violent. This conflict and the violence is ultimately the reason Tom must die at the end of the film. Another element of the gangster genre that is seen in Wellman's film is the rise and fall trajectory of the central gangster protagonist. In order to avoid glamorizing the life of a gangster and his perverted American Dream, his crimes must be punished. This is a central element to any gangster film created under the auspices of the production code. To obey the rules and regulation of the PCA, any gangster in film will live "a short but glamorous life..that reaffirms the audience's knowledge that in Hollywood, lawlessness cannot go unpunished" (Køhlert 857). The era under the PCA shaped the narrative of the gangster genre to include the death of essentially every gangster protagonist. In one of the most powerful scenes of the film, after Tom has taken revenge on the rival members, he stumbles, shot, clutching his chest into the raining streets and gutter (The Public Enemy). He is alone, isolated by the rain, and likely going to die. This is not a character the audience is supposed to sympathize with, and this is exactly to goal of the gangster genre. Elements such as, the exhibition and portrayal of various Asian fighting styles like kung fu and drunken boxing, and the variation of them in brawls, substantial use of sound effects when receiving and delivering blows, to both enhance and intensify the severity of the fight are all evident in these films. In particular, one of the most well know Asian martial arts films, Lo Wei's Fist of Fury starring the legendary and iconic Bruce Lee employs all mentioned conventions. Specifically, a scene in which Bruce Lee fights a conglomeration of adversaries utilising mixed martial arts and kung fu (2) a heavy use of mouth noises and diegetic SFX are used in conjunction with extremely fast paced fighting. Rhetoric And Genre Analysis In my Rhetoric and Genre essay on, Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn I honestly tried my best to explain how the use of genre was ideal to explain Dunn's rhetoric in the book. I started of by bringing out what I believe were the main points that Dunn wanted to get to his readers. This points being the importance of critical thinking, communication and language and what would happen if we lacked on each of them. When it came to writing on why I believed these points were best told in an epistolary genre was without a doubt a challenge for me. For this one I would say the genre showed the most effectively what the lack of communication does to people. Due to the fact that letters are a way of communicating one can see how as the letters get shorter and it get harder to communicate people become miserable and lonely . This showing how the letters were needed to show how lack of critical thinking can affect others and how they think of you and it makes you seem, quite foolish as in this book. Discourse analysis as interaction represents the third level of language description. Most importantly, interactional analysis outlines the concept of interpretation of discourse by the reader or listener. Discourse analysis appears to have steadily moved from surface–level analysis to a deeper description of language use. However, in the context of language teaching for specific purposes, applied discourse analysis seems to represent a rather narrow description of language in use and is inadequate in its explanation. In order to introduce a thick description of language in use, it is necessary to combine socio–cultural and psycholinguistic aspects of text–construction and interpretation with linguistic insights to answer the question: why are specific discourse–genres written and used by the specialist communities the way they are? • 27. Romantic Comedy Genre Analysis Genre in film began as a sort of "commercial tool" which showed audiences recognizable film content in order to attract customers (Campbell and Swenson). As the film industry grew, this content began to be more specialized, allowing the audience to know exactly what to expect from the film they were seeing. For example, films within the same genre share the same myths, iconography, and conventions. This means they have similarities in aspects such as plot, characters, themes, moods, ways of doing things particular to that genre, and repeated visual and oral elements such as images and sounds. Often genre films are influenced by the social culture of the time in which they are produced, and the content in the film tend to propose a solution to the current problems within society. These resolutions are often portrayed by a main protagonists who is presented with a conflict; the film then concludes with the character reaching a solution to the problem that is not only logical, but moral as well. Within the romantic comedy genre specifically, the storyline usually follows a couple rather than a protagonist. The romantic comedy, or rom com, genre has often been ruled "a purely escapist and conservative genre, accused of unquestioningly presenting unrealistic romantic fantasies for passive audiences" (MacDowell). From its earliest days, romantic comedy films have mostly focused on finding romance and the idea that love is the key to a fulfilled and delighted life. However, this ... In review of the film, Peter Bradshaw commented that "JJ Abrams banishes memories of George Lucas's prequels", describing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as an "outrageously exciting and romantic return to a world you hadn't realised you'd missed so much" (Bradshaw 2015). The use of the word 'romantic' is particularly interesting, when taking into account Blair Davis' comment that "sci–fi was often paired with other genres" (Davis 2013) in the production of films; indeed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens does seem to follow that pattern of amalgamation, with IMDb describing the film as "Action, Adventure, Fantasy" (IMDb 2015). Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub–genre category. Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light–hearted, humorous story involving people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or gross–out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre and how this movie fits the gangster genre. Romantic comedy films create a comic climate through a series of cues to the audience: subject matter is treated as trivial, jokes and physical humor make fun of events, and characters are protected from harm (Grindon Leger (2015). • 61. Genre Analysis Example Essay #3 Genre Analysis The main focus of the Problem Solution essay is to analyze different topics related to the subject of "image" in Asian American studies. This essays aims to go more in depth about the problems that surround the subject of "image" and then creating a solution to these issues. In order to get to a solution one must first come up with a method that includes thinking of a topic that is closely related to the subject of image, present said topic to the professor, compose an outline for a rough draft and eventually a final draft. This process will ultimately allow the student to further evaluate and resolve other issue in Asian American studies. Beyond the limitations of the actual assignment, the overall prompt presents restrictions in that the meaning of vocabulary like "Thesis" and "Body Paragraph" require prior knowledge and exposure to the word. Also the use of outside documents, which were apparently previously presented in the class, in the assignment sheet like "Takaki's strategy" and the "'Paper Structure' handout," present problems when people outside of the "peers" and the instructor read this essay. The requirements call for the student to turn in other assignments with the actual final draft, which may enhance the understanding of the finished piece. In turning in these several other pieces will show how, ultimately, the academic writing process takes numerous steps. The finished piece is the result of many different steps of the writing ... • 63. Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word "genre is it describes either a novel, film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or "rules" of what defines that specific genre. Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or drama. Daniel Chandler explains perfectly in "An Introduction to Genre Theory" how genre is not always straightforward in defining things such as stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained that it shouldn't be classified as a fantasy novel. Both explain how genres are now being mixed and that sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil Gaiman's statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn't determine genre and that genres only exist when there's an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and writers take these specifications too seriously, and believe that if you don't follow the certain "standards" of what makes a specific genre, they believe that it is strange. However, I don't agree with Ishiguro when he states "Books are serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn't attach itself to film" (Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people the same way that books can motivate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Horror is designed to scare, cause alarm and dread, while also entertaining the audience at the same time in a cathartic experience (Dirk, 2016). Horror films are meant for a specific type of audience that enjoy scary films. Dirks (Tim, 2016) approach to genre horror, is that films went back as 100 years ago, from the earliest days our vivid imagination in seeing ghosts in the shadows to be connected emotionally of the unknown, and fear things that are improbable. You watch a horror film, it makes you aware of the scary surroundings, the essence of fear itself, without actually being in any sorts of danger. Dirks argues that there is a fun and thrill factor in being frightened, or watching something disturbing. • 69. Genre Analysis : Jenny Mollen IRichard Her 9/19/17 English 109W Final Draft Genre Analysis Jenny Mollen, an American actress and New York best selling author, once said, "I think the power of persuasion would be the greatest superpower of all time" ("Jenny Mollen Quotes", n.d.). In other words, if you are able to persuade someone, you can basically get anything you want. Today, many expert writers utilizes genre conventions to state their purpose and to persuade their audience. First of all, what is a genre convention? In the article, the most repetitive word that was used was biotechnology. When the word "biotechnology" appears, the author usually describes the negative or positive effects of it. An example is when the author stated, "Biotechnology cannot provide secure food and reduce poverty during the development world.(Lesik,2017)" Therefore, this will inform and make the reader understand that biotechnology is being discussed in the paragraph. Another language that the author used was their "point of view". The author used the third person point of view to provide evidence for his article. By using the third person point of view, it made his article sound more effective and scholarly, because he does not use the words, "I" or "we". The second genre convention that the author used was structure. For a scientific journal article, the structure usually contains different sections such as an introduction, material/methods, data, results, and a conclusion. The purpose of having this structure is to organize the information, and to make it easier to identify for readers. In my article, the article has the same structure, but it does not have the same sections that were listed above. • 71. Movie Analysis : Film And Film Genre Essay There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated, science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre. An animated movie is a drawing, painted, or digitally created film that uses stop–frame cinematography to simulate movement. The best example of an animated movie is Spirited Away. This film came out in 2001 and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film revolves around Chihiro, a girl who must grow up quickly and save her parents from a spirit world. The theme of the film is that there is both good and evil in the world and part of growing up is finding the line between good and evil. In almost every animated film you will find a family friend theme and a fast paced story. This is mainly because most animated films are aimed toward children and families. As a result of this, animated films usually revolve around growing up and taking responsibility, or other themes that will benefit children. Spirited Away is the best example of an animated movie because it is fast paced, has great themes, and is engaging to both children and adults. When children watch Spirited Away they will love the themes or growing up and taking responsibility and exploring the fantasy world inside the film. Adults will also ... • 75. Genre Analysis Paper Genre analysis is an attempt to explain why members of specific discourse communities employ different and special ways of using language. Sociocultural aspects of language and existing differences among the contexts in which a language is used may, to some extent, answer this question. In addition, cognitive strategies applied by the speakers or writers may also play a role since the members of each language community use different strategies to achieve their desired goals (Bhatia, 1996). According to a definition given by Martin (1985), "genres are how things get done, when language is used to accomplish them". As implicitly found in this definition, any genre analysis must be a detailed description of linguistic elementsof a specific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Negative politeness, on the other hand, is shown when a person wants to avoid intrusion, defer to someone by giving a superior form of address such as sir, apologize for something wrong she has done. Having the definition of politeness and the intended purpose of the study, the first thing to be done is to examine the particular organization of the text, the use of a particular vocabulary and the use of particular grammatical structure. That is to say that the whole linguistic materials employed in this context, which altogether make the rhetorical strategies of the context to fulfill the purpose of politeness, should also be thoroughly examined. The second thing to be investigated is to analyze the relationship between the sender of the message and its receiver. Here in the current context, the lawyer or her client (either of the accuser or the accused) is the sender of the message and the judge (or the jury) is the receiver. The kind of relationship between these individuals should also be defined. Politeness is expected to be observed from inferiors to superiors and here the receiver of the message has the authority and power to decide on behalf of the receiver. Therefore, it can be expected here that the linguistic materials used by the lawyers and her clients in the court reflect courtesy. Regarding the situational context, it is observed that sender tries to influence the receiver about the decisions being made later. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Writing Genre Analysis Translating one genre into another one requires creative thinking and forces writer to adapt to the needs of a new audience. In this assignment, I chose to translate an entertainment article into a scientific journal. Specifically, I wanted to change the genre of an article titled "Gavin Rossdale Cheated on Gwen Stefani With the Family Nanny for Years "Right Under" Her Nose: Details" turn it into a scientific journal. The scientific journal will then discusses women's reaction to cheating in relationship. I decided to do this since these two genres of writing seem to be a complete opposite. They are opposite in a sense that entertainment journalism tend to have subjective approach with storytelling format and informal word choices whereas scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think the hardest part of this assignment is making sure that the article that I am translating to reflects the characteristics of the actual genre. Although this was initially challenging, I was able to overcome these confusion by studying more about both the magazine article and the scientific journal and analyzing the writing conventions that each of these genres have. By studying more about the genres and actually translating the piece myself, I was able to get a deeper understanding of the writing choices and the purpose of these two genres. As mentioned in Kerry Dirk's "Navigating Genres" article, each genre has certain characteristics or conventions that define them (Dirk, 258). This assignment helped me understand the choices that authors made in these two genres in order to attract their own target audience and purpose. For example, I learned that entertainment articles like to use words such as "shocking" and "exclusive news" because they are trying to attract readers while scientific journals prefer less of this. In addition to using Dirk's "Navigating Genres" article, I also used Mike Bunn's "How to Read Like a Writer" article to help me in this translating process. As explained by Bunn, when we read like a writer, we identify some of the choices that the authors made so then we could have better understanding of how such choices might appear in our own writing (Bunn, 22). By learning how to read like a writer and applying it to reading the original article, I was able to notice the choices that she had made and decide which parts of it that I would want to keep for the new translated ...
