Asiana Airlines Flight 214 Pilot Error Case Analysis Taylor White Embry–Riddle Aeronautical
University ASCI 202: Introduction to Aeronautical Science ASIANAAIRLINES FLIGHT 214
PILOT ERROR CASE ANALYSIS I. Summary On July 16, 2013 Asiana Airlines Flight 214
operated by a Boeing 777–200ER was landing at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) destined
from Incheon International Airport near Seoul, South Korea. The Boeing 777–200ER had
accumulated 36,000 flight hours and 5,000 takeoff and landing cycles. The aircrew consisted of
Captain Lee Jung Min, Captain Lee Kang Kuk and first officer Bong Dong–won. Captain Lee Jung
Min was in the right seat and filled the role of check/instructor captain and pilot in command and
had logged 12,387 hours ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
IV. Alternative Actions Action One: Repeal or loosen Asiana's policy on full use of automation.
Advantages: Allowing to let the pilots choose when to use automation equipment would result in
them being more vigilant and aware of what the aircraft is doing instead of assuming its right.
Disadvantages: Doing so could lead to more crashes due to misjudgment of the pilot. Action Two:
Ensure proper crew resource management (CRM) is being used in the cockpit. Advantages: Crew
members being able to show their concern or make quick decisions to avoid an accident that they
see coming but the others do not. Disadvantages: It could possibly lead to inexperienced crew
members making poor decisions against the captains will because they think they are right. V.
Recommendations Any airline policy that says pilots should rely on automation rather than their
own judgement should be repealed. Although some human factors can lead to a crash there is no
better system to use than human intuition or your "gut feeling". References Human Factors and

Qantas Market Segmentation
The airline industry has long attempted to segment the air travel market in order to effectively target
its constituents. The classic airline model consists of First Class, Business Class and Economy, and
the demographics that make up the classes have both similarities and differences to the other classes.
For instance there may be similarities between business class travellers on a particular flight, but
they will not all be travelling for the same reason. An almost–universal characteristic of air travel is
that customers do not fly for the sake of flying; the destination is the important element and the
travel is a by–product, a means–to–an–end that involves the necessity of an aircraft that gets the
customer from point A to point B. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recently Qantas has partnered up with Emirates in an effort to channel Europe–bound travellers
through Dubai International Airport in a mutually beneficially arrangement, an example of
business–to–business geographic segmentation marketing. Qantas encourages tourism by
broadcasting the same television and print advertisement to both international and domestic
customers with iconic images of Australia. This is a marketing strategy that serves multiple
purposes, it stimulates Australian tourism abroad while firmly associating Australia with Qantas and
also encourages 'brand loyalty' from Australians who wish to support their country. Because of the
large variety of airlines both internationally and domestically, Qantas has marketed themselves
towards service; they are the only "full–service" airline in Australia.
Demographic
The demographic characteristics of customers can be broken down by the class they choose to fly.
First Class is chiefly attracting high–income earners, who are concerned with a high level of service
and enjoy an air of exclusivity. These are knows as "comfort seekers" and they can include business
magnates, federal politicians, sporting stars and a–list celebrities. The First Class market is highly
concentrated; less than 3% of passengers will choose to fly First Class but those customers make up
close to 30% in revenue for the airline (Keen and Strand 2007). Because the focus is on service and

Southwest Airlines Case Study
The airline company of Southwest Airlines was founded in 1971 by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher.
Southwest Airlines originally started by just servicing the Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio areas in
Texas. Some things that Southwest became known for right off the bat were a frequent miles
program, which allowed the traveler to bank traveler air miles to be latterly used credit for a free
ticket or even some reduced airfare. Southwest also was ranked number one in its customer service
for the fourth consecutive year in a row in 1984. Two years later, Southwest took over Transtar
Airlines and also took over Morris Air in 1994. Some of the airlines that were around when
Southwest started were Braniff, Aloha Airlines, United Airlines, Trans–Texas, and Continental
Airlines. Some of these airline companies started legal action and began and began a long three year
battle to try and keep Southwest Airlines on the ground. However, the U.S. Supreme Court declined
the case on December 7, 1970. What was interesting about this certain event, is that a children's
book, called Gumwrappers and Goggles by Winifred Barnum in 1983, was made from it. The
children's book was later turned into a stage musical called Show Your Spirit, which was sponsored
by Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines got a lot of it's corporate culture from the founder, Herb
Kelleher, extensively studying the California–based Pacific Southwest Airlines.
Southwest again found it's way to another legal controversy

Future of Passenger Aircraft
The future of passenger aircraft and their manufactures has an amazing outlook. Every year the
brightest minds in aviation compile the greatest technological advances towards creating the safest
and most economical aircraft on the planet. No detail is over looked, and the bottom dollar is the all
controlling factor. From private aircraft to public aircraft, space exploration and beyond, the future
is bright for the passenger aircraft market, and everyone who purchases air travel should be excited
to see how industry unfolds.
Let's kick this off! For me, this topic hits home and in my pocket. My uncle, retired Coast Guard

Today Boeing has an aircraft that can seat over 500 people, and one that can fly over 9,300 nautical
miles in its 777x program. That's 1/3 of the way around the globe without stopping! Currently,
Boeing Commercial employs over 80,000 workers in the United States supporting the Pacific
Northwest and the South East portions of the country for main manufacturing headquarters. The
second airline company that holds a majority stock in the passenger airliner world is Airbus. Airbus
has a family of five passenger airliners as well, including the A320, A330, A340, A350, and A380
families. The flagship A380 double decker aircraft can carry over 525 passengers in three section
configuration, over 800 passengers in a single class configuration. Airbus has been highlighting
milestones and achievements for 40 years, boasting marks such as the first wide body twin engine
airliner producer in 1974 to its record breaking arrival of the A380 in 2007. All of Airbus' fly by
wire systems onboard its aircraft and modularity between models significantly cut operating costs
for the fleet which are passed to the consumer. Airbus employs over 59,000 in multiple locations
around the globe concerning its passenger airliner department.
Along with commercial airlines, private company aircraft also play a large role in the passenger
aircraft world. Companies like Gulf Stream, Bombardier, Hawker, Eclipse, Cessna, Dassault,

A Leading Airline Group With Effective Security Systems...
'A leading airline group with effective security systems and culture'.
Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and
procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its
current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward.
There is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within
aviation, and the findings will play a key role in Qantas' ability to influence regulators. The focus for
this project is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is
evidence to suggest that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian
markets.
Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees
including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section
of Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive
conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle
Management and Frontline levels. Overarching themes encompassed the need for greater
engagement including collaboration and a clearer understanding as to how security culture fits into
the broader culture, specifically how security supports safety and is aligned to the brand values and
desired organisational behaviours. PwC also engaged an

Airport Terminal Passenger Movement
Traveling across the country can be a challenge because of the many ways to chose from. Even
when you and family decide to travel for a plan vacation, and take your personal vehicle it can be a
hassle. How much time do you have seems to be a major factor, because if the drive is too long, how
tired will you be after the trip. Of course there are trains and buses that can get you to your
destination in a preferred time and will probably not be as busy and the lines will not be as long but
the preferred choice and the biggest growing transportation industry is airlines.

Shopping and eating are two ways to past your extra time before entering the security gates.
The security gates are the bottle neck of the airport terminal, because this is where the TSA agents
are trained to save lives, so the searches can be long and uncomfortable at times. The security
measures for airports have always been under scrutiny for people getting through security with all
type of items for a long time. So security measures have changed over the years to become more
consistent and firm during searches of passengers but things have been even more intense since the
9/11 terrorist attacks on the nation. The challenge has been how to get large groups of passengers
through the airport with as little problems as possible at a fast pace because of the huge turnover at
the large airports each hour of the day. One of the ways the airport terminal use has caught much
attention and some cases has been banned because when you go through the machine it appears to

airport security technology that critics say performs 'a virtual strip search' and produces 'naked'
pictures of passengers, CNN has learned. (Ravitz, 2009. para. 1) The machines were designed to
keep passengers safe, by detecting all type of items that the normal wand or security machine did
not pick up. The passengers

Descriptive Vacation
On a hot summer day when my family and I were finally going to Hawaii I was the first one to have
all my bags packed and to be out the door. I waited in the car for my family by watching my favorite
youtuber on my phone. I was losing my patience because my parents were taking forever.
"Mom! Dad! Hurry we need to be at the airport at one thirty and it's already twelve o clock! My
luggage is already in the car! We need to hurry if we want to get to our hotel in time. We have to
check in by 6:00 or they don't give us our room." I explained
"We are almost done honey, we need to lock the house and make sure that none of the lights are on.
Did you get your toothbrush and toothpaste? What about your ps4 are you taking that with you?"
My mom asked.
"Yes, I have everything. Let's just hurry and leave." I cried.
During the long and what it felt like never ending car ride I looked at all of the beautiful sites
outside. While hooked into the sights, someone called my name. It was my dad woke me up to tell
me we finally made it to the airport.
"Whoaaaaa! This airport is huge! Can we go into some of the shops before our flight? Wow look at
that one! See's Candies looks like a chocolate heaven! Can we please go in there?" I asked.
"No. We need to go through security and then we need to get to our section and board our flight. It's
twelve forty five and it takes 30 minutes to go through security and find our section for the flight."
My mom said.

Strategy Analysis : Apple's Strategy
Strategy can have many different meanings, depending on the context. However, in this situation,
strategy is; as Riley mentioned on the tutor2u website (2015), strategy is "Where is the business
trying to get to in the long–term". Strategy is a planned pathway that a business needs to follow in
order to achieve its aims and objectives for success. Every businesses strategy is different to one
another, depending on the type of business and the market they operate in. however, there can be a
few similarities between every business' strategies. Such as, Apple's strategy is very different each
other, because they operate in two different markets, however there are a few similarities between
the two, for example, high prices etc. Strategy is very important, and it has to be well planned,
because the business can either achieve all its objectives successfully or fail entirely. Every
business's strategy has its own strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the business has opportunities
and threats as well, that can affect the business.

Boeing Airlines And The Defense Market Essay
Company's Market
Boeing may only be one company, but they compete in two different markets: commercial airlines
and the defense industry. The main competition in the commercial airline market is Airbus. Airbus
and Boeing seem to have the commercial airline industry in a chokehold basically having no other
competitors. Since the industry has high barriers to entry they will not see much competition
anytime soon. Boeing is the American leader in commercial airplanes and Airbus is the European
leader, which means they are constantly battling. Their competing aircrafts are the Airbus A380 and
the Boeing 747. Both companies have many variations of their respected aircraft and according to
Business Insider, Airbus' A380 outranks the Boeing 747 based on cost, range, size and luxury.
The defense market, Boeing aligns itself in is more complex than their commercial airline market.
Boeing's main competitor in this market is Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Company. Even though
all these companies may compete, each with each other they often create joint ventures because the
defense industry requires a diverse product mix that one company may not be able to fulfill. One
example of these ventures is when Boeing and Lockheed Martin come to together to own/operate
Hellfire Systems, LLC which allows for both companies to sell AGM–114 Hellfire Missiles. This
missile is used in the United States Army, Navy and Air Force so this is a very profitable venture for
both Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

General Aviation Aircraft Value Analysis
General Aviation Aircraft Value Analysis
A value analysis of four different modes of transportation was conducted to assess which would be
the most economical by means of time and expense. Two separate trips were analyzed. The first, a
relatively shorter trip of 1200 miles round trip from Detroit Michigan to Nashville Tennessee. The
second, a longer trip of 2800 round trip miles from Detroit to Miami Florida.
Three colleagues were used as a baseline for costs for all modes of transportation. The analyzed
modes of transportation included car, train, business jet and commercial airline. Also included in the
cost analysis were paid company time, per diem, fuel, food stops, hotel and miscellaneous expenses.

Regardless of its advantages or disadvantages, it can offer an economical way to travel during
shorter trips. As outlined below, due to lengthy staff time requirements and relatively slower travel it
is not ideal for long trips.
During both the long and the short trip, three people will be sharing one vehicle. This could offer the
opportunity to share the driving duties, have work discussion, and rest. Personal experience however
shows that it can be very challenging to work (on a laptop for example) while riding in a car. Both
the trip to Nashville and Miami by car are outlined in table 1 and table 2 below. The trip expenses
also includes a necessary stay in a hotel (for each person), per diem, staff time, and the drive to the
rental car facility. The estimated total cost of driving to Nashville was $8655, while driving to
Miami was $14,844. The greatest expense was incurred during the excessive staff time and related
expenses incurred while driving.

Airline Regulations
AIRLINE REGULATIONS Research Paper AVSC 1220 TREVOR CARTER ID # 10524707 *The
airline industry operates like the veins of the United States by pumping precious cargo throughout
the country. Most *people don't realize how different the airlines were a few decades ago. The entire
industry was regulated by the government. Regulation is usually considered a more socialistic
liberal idea that is opposed by conservative capitalists. Although I personally believe in a
government with a small limited *role* in our daily lives, I have come to the conclusion that the
airline industry is a rare exception that needs to return to regulation which would benefit the airlines
and the consumers in numerous ways. In the days of regulation ... Show more content on

This is just a temporary fix that might stave off the shortage for a few years but hiring will start
again and there won't be enough pilots let alone enough experience pilots to fly all of these
airplanes. Under regulation when oil quadrupled in the 70's, the price was passed onto the consumer
by raising ticket prices. This is unfortunate but it is a part of the way our economy works. Today
with prices rising, the airlines will not raise prices and instead try to run other companies into the
ground by lowering prices. This is not healthy competition. The airline industry lost 25 billion
dollars from 2000*–2005. During that period a*irfares dropped 10* percent while 20 airlines went
bankrupt. US Airways and Northwest Airlines have removed their obligation to their pension funds
by pleading in *bankruptcy court that they couldn't operate *without* do*ing so. This wiped out
over 8,5*00 pilots retirement funds between the two of them. Over 7000 Delta pilots have also since
lost their retirements. * Pilots have conceded roughly 25–35*% pay cuts along with losing their
retirements in order to keep these airlines afloat and ensure the passenger gets a good deal on their
ticket. *Within the past few weeks Aloha Airlines joined the ranks and went out of business

Knowing Why Airplanes Crash Is Important Essay
There are technologies being discussed to improve crash location technologies. They are
improvements to the ULB battery life, an additional low frequency ULB. Another technology is
ADS–B which monitors aircraft position. Crash deployable flight recorders are also being
considered as well as streaming flight data via a satellite. Let's us take a closer look at each
technology. There are several improvements to ULB technology in progress. ULB Battery Life is in
the process of being extended from 30 days to 90 days. There will be an additional ULB attached to
the fuselage which will broadcast at a lower frequency which increases the range the beacon can be
heard. In light of the MH370 tragedy and the lingering doubt over whether the ... Show more

The US Military has had crash Deployable Flight Recorders (DFR) for over twenty years with 110

which broadcasts the aircraft serial number (Werfelman, Thinking outside the black box). Streaming
data is another technology that has been popularly suggested for use in Locating and accessing FDR
information. After all if we can stream movies in high definition why can't we do the same with the
FDR data? In light of the AF447 tragedy there has been a tremendous amount of research into
aircraft streaming fight data if the aircraft detects a potential crash condition. On September 3, 2010
a UPS 747–400 successfully uplinked flight using a streaming data before a fatal catastrophic crash
due to a cargo fire (Werfelman, Narowing the search). This data was streamed live in real–time to
the UPS command center in Lexington, KY. UPS was aware the flight had inflight fire before the
plane had crash and was aware of when, where and why the flight terminated (BEA). However there
are several concerns about this technology. Pilots are very resistant to

Violation Of Grant Assurance 22 Essay
In the past, the FAA has found a constructive grant of a prohibited exclusive right whenever a
Sponsor violated Grant Assurance 22, without regard to the number of entities conducting the same
aeronautical activities or providing the same services. Under current policy, the FAA will consider
the presence of other entities at the airport engaged in the same activities before finding that a
violation of Grant Assurance 22 is also a constructive violation of Grant Assurance 23.
The Grant Assurance includes an exception that permits a single FBO if both of the conditions
below are met:
It would be unreasonably costly, burdensome, or impractical for more than one fixed–based operator
to provide such services; and
If allowing more than one FBO would require the reduction of space currently leased by the single
FBO.
In other words, even if it would be impractical for two FBOs to operate at the airport, if the Sponsor
has vacant space that could accommodate a second FBO, it cannot rely on this exception to deny
access to the second FBO.
In addition, the FAA interprets Grant Assurance 23 to permit a Sponsor to offer commercial
aeronautical services with its own employees and equipment on an exclusive basis. This right is
referred to as the proprietary exclusive right. The use of the Sponsor's own employees and
equipment is critical to this exception. The Sponsor cannot rely on an agency relationship or
contract the services to a third–party and claim the proprietary exclusive

Safety Problems in America's Commercial Airline Industry
1989 has been a year in which both aviation experts and spokesmen. For the flying public have
expressed intensified concern over what they perceive to be a substantial deterioration in the safety
of America's passenger airline operations. In the first nine months of 1989 alone, there have been ten
fatal air crashes involving large transport–category planes owned by U.S. based carriers (Ott p.28).
This compares disfavorably to the first nine of months of 1988, when but two such accidents took
place, and in fact, it is the highest number of death–causing accidents for the American commercial
aviation industry during the 1980s (Fotos p.31). This spate of airborne tragedies has prompted
interested parties to ask a series of disturbing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clearly, there is an economic motive behind airline operation of "geriatric" planes. A Boeing 737,
for example, cost around $25 million at present, so that, " it is in the economic interest of an airline
to prolong the life of its current fleet if it can do so at reasonable cost and without compromising
safety." In the opinion of some critics, given the competitive pressures of a de–regulated market
environment, some airlines are paying too much attention to this economic imperative, and,
conversely, too little care to the maintenance of adequate safety standards. Most jet transport
accidents are not the result of equipment failure; a full two–thirds can be attributed to human error.
At present, all U.S. air carriers, major airlines and regionals alike, are facing a reduced pool of
qualified pilots and flight personnel to staff their crews. De–regulation has meant a higher level of
demand for a finite number of qualified crew members, and, at the same time, the number of
potential crew members leaving the nation's armed forces (the traditional mainstay of new hires for
the airlines) has dropped sharply in recent years. As has been noted in a recent issue of Aviation
Week & Space Technology: " the major airlines are reported to be drastically reducing the amount of
flying time they require from applicants, "and while " there is no shortage of applicants (there is) a

"quirkiness" that is currently Trader Joe's strongest attribute. Already, a bit of authenticity from the
original stores has slipped away from expansion. A former employee, as shown in the case study,
said "In the early days we never tried to be a neighborhood store."1 There is no question that trying
to incorporate more traditional advertising and thus, competing with large grocery retailers is the
wrong direction for the company. More subtle advertising that builds upon the current strengths
would be the best. The important thing to consider is if new ways to advertise would help achieve

Solution 2 – Reduce bureaucracy/promote authentic feeling of local neighborhood stores There is
concern that as Trader Joe's expands it might lose its "charm" and "quirky cool" image. Already
there has been some complaint about its inauthenticity when trying to be a real neighborhood
store.17 The obvious way to combat this is to give more autonomy to each individual store.
Encouragement to make sure each location is original and different from other location stores would
create a sense of shopping at specialized markets as opposed to a retail chain. Each Fearless Flyer

Southwest Airlines: Organizational Culture
"Southwest is one of the most admired companies in the country, respected in an industry that's
better known for delayed flights and bad customer service than a great corporate culture." (Business
Insider) Southwest Airlines is known by many to have a long history or service in the airline
industry. In many ways its rise to success is nothing less than astonishing. The company has been
innovative in both its methods of marketing and its ability to manage its workforce effectively.
Many consider Southwest a pioneer in the forms of creativity and innovation that is has used to
strike the global economy. It's also a well–considered company in the topic of Company Culture.
The values of Southwest go beyond the vague statements made in other companies, such as "take the
initiative" or "care about your customers." One of the more important values is not being afraid to
deliver the product to the customer. "We need to give our employees all the tools they need to
support our customers. People travel for a variety of reasons – business, funerals, vacations – and
you need to be sensitive to their space and schedules." (Forbes) The other value is to treat everyone
with respect and put other people first. "We believe we need to connect people to what is important
in their lives through friendly, reliable and low cost air travel. If you respect their concerns and
needs, and still provide low–cost and low–fare terms, then you do indeed have a servant's heart. The

Delta Airlines : A Major American Airline Company And One...
1. Delta Airlines is a major American airline company and one of the world's largest global airlines.
The company has operation hubs in the USA, Japan, and France. (Delta Airlines, 2016).
2. USA, Japan, and France are all members of the IMF, the World Bank, and WTO.
3. All three countries actively follow the guidelines of these major international institutions.
According to Managing Director of the IMF (Kohler, 2002), "There has been a near–revolution in
transparency at the IMF, and a steady improvement in the release of economic information by our
member countries." It is essential for countries to be transparent in their annual checkups from the
IMF in order to keep all member countries up to date on economic data in countries they have
financial dealings with. This information is what keeps countries from financial crisis. The United
States is the largest shareholder of the World Bank and is the only country with veto power over
changes in structure, therefore the US plays a major role in developing and supporting the World
Bank's mission (The World Bank, 2013). Since 1998, France has only been a respondent to 4 dispute
cases (World Trade Organization), which shows that they actively try to follow the guidelines.
4. The United States, France, and Japan all have functioning judiciary systems. France and Japan
both have a civil law system, while the US has a common law system (The World Factbook, 2016).

Essay Safety Problems In Americas Commercial Airline...
On the whole, it is, in fact, comparatively safe to fly, and even with 1989 crash incidents added to
the aggregated figures, flying is no more dangerous today than it was prior to deregulation.
The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and an array of
independent air safety experts have all probed this year's major airline accidents. Despite all of post
hoc study, they have been unable to discern a common link among them, (Ott p.28) with one major
exception. The qualification at hand refers to dramatic increase in the volume of air traffic since de–
regulation. According to NTSB member John Lauber, " ' if there is a trend in accidents, it is a trend
set by the increasing volume of air transport operations rather than any fundamental deterioration in
the margins of safety (Ott p.28).' " At first glance, this argument is comforting: more flights in the
air simply result in more accidents commensurate with higher traffic volumes, so that the impact of
de–regulation has had only the broadest and most indirect influences upon the industry's safety
record. But to ascribe the recent rash of safety problems to the "neutral" effect of higher traffic
volume in the wake of de–regulation and leave it at that overlooks several critical points. For
example, to remain competitive, many airlines schedule flights in clusters for the convenience of
their passengers. This, in turn, as Rudolf

Aloha And Hawaiian Values
What do you think when you hear a word Aloha? When I had no knowledge of Hawaii, or Hawaiian
values, I thought it only means hello and welcome. I've learned so much about Hawaii and its values
including Aloha and now I know it doesn't only mean that. Aloha can mean "love. Aloha can mean
"farewell". After I got into Kapiolani Community College, I had chance to get to know Hawaiian
values and each time I'm amazed how each word have deep and thoughtful meanings. And Aloha is
the basis of most of the other Hawaiian spirits. Therefore, without knowing Aloha, it's close to
impossible to understand Hawaiian cultural values and that's why I wanted to introduce little about
Aloha before I jump into the introduction of my three favorite values. In the book, Aloha is
mentioned as "outpouring and receiving of the spirit" (Say, 17). Though my understanding of the
word Aloha and other Hawaiian values grew from the last few semesters in KCC, I still learned a lot
from reading this book and that definition of Aloha is one of the teaching from this book. This book
often related the Hawaiian values to the supervisor / managing positions in the hospitality industry
and how he defined managers in hospitality industry in Hawaii made me interested to read this
book; he defined as "Ambassadors of the Aloha spirit" (Say, 7). When reading this book, I was able
to relate some values into my own life, and I was able to come up with three values that relate most
to my life, or which I love the most,

Ba Research Report Essay
A research report with a word limit of 1,500 on British Airway's (BA) change program that resulted
in long–running industrial disputes between its management and crew members in 2009–2011.
The contextual information about the BA's introduction of strategic changes – why BA produced
this change, explain market (rising fuel costs etc.)
British Airways is the UK's largest airline. Since becoming privatized in 1987, BA has continued to
grow despite increased competition (Connell & Williamson, 2011).
The UK's economic climate had a large influence to why the British Airways' industrial occurred. In
2011, UK inflation was 4% on the previous year, compared to an average pay rise of 2.3% for the
same period. This means that the cost of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 'unfreezing' phase (Lewin's model) of this change was a gradual, drawn–out process.
Time:
As this was not a company in crisis there wasn't a need to implement change reactively, British
Airways had time to achieve their long–term strategy.
Scope:
British Airways did not require a transformation of the organisation as a whole. A realignment of the
cabin crew's operations and wage structure was the desired scope for this change. However, due to
the industrial action taken by Unite the change had an impact organisation–wide.
Preservation:
It is important that BA preserves what makes British Airways, British Airways. This means they
need to retain their brand identity, because this is one of their biggest selling points. It is also
important to not destroy the business' heritage and culture.
Job security for the remaining cabin crew will be at an all–time low. Key members of staff need to
be reassured of their position so that BA doesn't lose these assets to competitors.
Diversity:
The change should not affect diversity between divisions. This means that the culture should remain
consistent throughout BA, from pilots, to cabin crew, to administration staff.
Capability:
The individual within the cabin crew will need to be capable of adapting to the new operational
requirements and be able to accept the change in

Executive Summary
JetBlue airline was founded by David Neeleman who is a Brazilian born entrepreneur. His goal was
to single handedly create a unique airline that was innovative for the current market. The low fare
airline was designed for customers who needed to travel at affordable prices, and which would
essentially create a new strand of business. Named JetBlue, Neeleman's airline originally traveled to
various cities around the United States, but has recently entered the international market by offering
flights that reach countries such as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Since it is a customer
oriented company, JetBlue makes ordinary flights into an extraordinary experience for its customers.

Increased fares and develop in particular markets
4. Offer better services for companies and business travelers
5. Form strategic partnerships
6. Grow additional revenues
The company implemented these strategies not through a one–strategy one–action method, but
instead combined several strategies into one action, or vice versa. For example, JetBlue established
a new terminal at JFK airport which facilitated an improvement in respects to on–time departure and
arrival averages at one of the nation's busiest airports. Furthermore JetBlue had sold a stake of its
shares to Lufthansa which not only improved JetBlue's revenues, but it allowed JetBlue's customers
to fly on Lufthansa flights to Germany. JetBlue scheduled to reduce capacity and cut costs by selling
nine A–320 aircrafts along with postponing the purchase or lease of numerous other aircrafts.
Furthermore, the company reduced its aircraft utilization rate from 13 hours per day to 12.5 hours,
halting service in three cities and canceling future services.
JetBlue started to grow in selective markets and raised its fares. In March 2008, JetBlue declared
that Orlando would become its seventh focus city, which would provide service to Cancun, Mexico
and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. JetBlue also attracted business travelers by announcing
refundable fares and discounts for company meeting planners for every 40 customers who reserved
to an identical destination. The company was also interested in

Dogfight over Europe: Ryanair (a)

Rev. November 21, 2007
Dogfight over Europe: Ryanair (A)
In April, 1986, the upstart Irish airline Ryanair announced that it would soon commence service
between Dublin and London. For nearly a year, the new airline had operated a 14–seat turboprop
between Waterford, in the southeast of Ireland, and Gatwick Airport on the outskirts of London. The
founders of Ryanair, brothers Cathal and Declan Ryan, felt that service on that first route had
developed well. They knew, however, that the Dublin–London route would pose new challenges.
For the first time, they would face Aer Lingus, British Airways, and other established competitors on
a major route.

Intra–country service was also regulated strictly. To varying degrees, domestic fares were set by
government authorities, and entry by new airlines was discouraged.
The collapse of European empires and the advent of jets capable of crossing the Atlantic
economically led virtually all European flag carriers to refocus their international efforts on routes
across the North Atlantic in the late 1950s. Heavy and growing demand for transportation to and
from North America made such routes highly profitable, at least initially.
Europe's system of regulation soon came under pressure. A late–1950s attempt to unify the flag
carriers of France, West Germany, Belgium, and Italy collapsed under the weight of disparate
national interests. By 1960, the Economist magazine bemoaned the state of the heavily regulated,
fragmented airline industry. "The basic trouble," it concluded, "remains that the world has too many
airlines, most of them inefficient, undercapitalised and unprofitable."4 Though the IATA introduced
some forms of restricted, discount fares in the 1950s, consumers grew dissatisfied with high prices.
European regulations applied largely to regularly scheduled service between destinations. To bypass
these regulations and to tap pent–up demand for leisure travel, charter airlines appeared and grew
rapidly during the 1960s. These start–ups, funded in part by shipping companies, offered holiday
makers cheap fares on

Essay on British Airways Labor Dispute
1. Introduction
Since the 1980s the situation in the civil aviation industry has changed dramatically, and although
the government still retains some form of in–direct control over the aviation sector and the 'former'
national airlines in specific, issues related to economization and efficiency of the business enterprise
take primacy in dictating strategic and operational decisions of the airline operators. This shift in the
approach to the regulation of the aviation sector around the globe has also greatly influenced issues
related to workforce organization in this industry, especially in the Western world.
In this report, the shift in the approach to employee relations will be discussed based on the case of

The opening of new markets within the EU exposed many national carriers to strong competition.
This trend has been furthered by the continuous liberalization of the global aviation industry and
specifically the recent OpenSkies agreement between EU and the US which allows the national
carriers to arrange the Atlantic flights from the airports that are not airlines' ports of origin. (BATA,
2010).
Latest developments on the British political scene create strong pressure on the costs of operations
for all the British carriers. The recently proposed raised taxation will put a huge disadvantage on the
British civil aviation industry. The new Government (2010) also introduced policy of blocking
airport expansion in the South East of England (McGhie, 2010).
2.2 Economic factors
From the economic perspective there have been few main points of pressure on the strategy of
British Airways. The 2008 global recession, the worst economic downturn since 1930s, continuous
high unemployment rates, along with the fluctuation of the British Pound continue to negatively
influence all businesses. Amidst the crisis, trade unions demanded greater government intervention
to support employment levels. Yet, in order to preserve employment levels, collective agreements
between UK social partners at organizational level set new standards of reduced working time
(Eiroonline, 2010).

Emerging Challenges in Airport Management
Project Assignment – Air Transport Management (ATM –1) (Submitted by: Mohd. Khalid Khan)
Title: " Emerging Challenges in Airport Management – Way Forward " Introduction: The last few
years has seen an exponential growth in the aviation industry. Aviation infrastructure has expanded
to include hundreds of airports and airlines around the world. New airports have mushroomed in
places which were hardly known to the world, existing airports have upgraded their facilities, new
terminals have come up and multiple airlines have been setup. The volume of people who choose
aviation as a transport has considerably grown. The aviation industry is in full bloom and so are the
problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Major expansion of one part may necessitate expansion of another. For example, adding new
runways and increasing the number of airside operations will result in the need for new gates and
more terminal waiting areas for passengers. Another problem often encountered in expansion is the
lack of suitable land. Many airports are closely surrounded by urbanized areas, land that would be
extremely expensive to acquire. In many metropolitan areas, a suitable tract of land might be distant
from the city center, making ground access a problem. In selecting a distant site, several questions
arise. If a new airport is a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, the existing airport, would
passengers be willing to travel that far to use it? Would air carriers be willing to serve an airport that
might attract fewer passengers than the old airport? These questions above need to be answered in
order for funds to come easily and satisfaction of both the government and the public. This has
become a major issue in today`s world of fast moving aviation. The following points help keep a
check on airport development and initiate proper release of funds for the same. a) Drafting a sound
financing strategy with realistic projects. b) Encouraging private investments and review public
financing options. c) Understanding the new airport management concepts. d) Introducing the brand
awareness concept in

purely by the customer about the excellence or superiority of a service provider's performance (A.

most effective form of customer loyalty; with 59% of consumers admitting to utilizing a particular

Gm Vs Southwest Hedging Strategy Essay
Financial risk is the risk a corporation faces due to its exposure to market factors such as interest
rates, foreign exchange rates, commodities and stock prices. Financial risks for the most part, can be
hedged due to the existence of large, efficient markets through which these risks can be transferred.
This is unlike operating risk, which is associated with more manufacturing and marketing activities.
Operating risk cannot be hedged because these risks are not traded.
In GM's case they used a passive hedging policy in which they hedged 50% of all significant foreign

Southwest is able to achieve a balance between hedging risk and the cost of hedging by hedging part
of its overall exposure either through a long–term contract or a derivative instrument, and keeping
the remainder of the exposure un–hedged so as to benefit from favorable market movements, either
through exercise of options or deals in the spot market.
Domestic airlines have a variety of hedging strategies available to them. These include using both
over–the–counter and exchange–traded derivatives. Options, including collar structures, and swaps
are the primary derivatives used by airlines. Many, including Southwest have stated that they prefer
over–the–counter derivatives to exchange traded futures because they are more customizable1.
The ability to customize these contracts greatly facilitates the implementation of a dynamic hedging
strategy, which is successfully used by Southwest. This strategy is based on the presumption that the
oil price cycle moves in cycles rather than consistently in one direction. To implement a dynamic
hedging strategy, a firm needs to vary the products over the oil price cycle. When oil is at the low
point in the cycle, receive–fixed swaps are used because the likelihood of further price declines is
not considered as probable as price increases, and the swap contract allows the airline to lock in the
relatively low price. In the mid–range of the cycle, collars are used to lock in a specified range of
prices, giving up potential

Variation in domestic & foreign oil price
The time is not going well for airlines industry. It is suffering in a pity condition due to increase in
aviation turbine fuel (ATF). ATF accounts for 35 per cent of the total airline expenses. The price of
ATF is increased 3 times in last 3 years. Just in last 5 months it has increased by 65%. Interesting
thing is that in the market of Singapore & Dubai, it is Rs.45 per liter but in India it has the 21%
higher price. First let's know why its price is higher.
In India the aviation companies have to spend more to purchase ATF. Airlines in India pay the most
for fuel when compared with other Asia Pacific hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong and Colombo,
mainly on account of higher tax rates. Aviation Turbine Fuel or jet fuel in Delhi, the city that houses
the nation 's second busiest airport, costs USD 1,291 per kilolitre while the same in Singapore is
sold at USD 1,067 per kl. It costs USD 1,100 per kl in Hong Kong and USD 1,113 in Colombo. For
airlines, refueling cost in Delhi is 21.73 per cent higher than that in Singapore. Similarly, airlines in
India pay 14.82 per cent and 13.87 per cent more than what those in Colombo and Hong Kong pay
respectively.

appearance rather than the campaign. In the video, a 6–year–old girl who dressed pretty and neatly
stood alone on a street and many people asked her whether she was all right. Later, when the same
girl had changed her appearance in dirty clothes and stood alone again in the same street, nobody
asked her whether she was okay. The attitudes that people showed depended on the child's physical
appearance. I have a similar experience. The experience that I realized how people are offended by
others who judge people based on the physical appearances was when I waited the delayed airplane
to go to Korea, a manager ignored me since I didn't dress up neatly, however he changed his attitude
politely as soon as he noticed I was a VIP in his company. A few years ago, my mom called me in
the night and said urgently, "Your grandmother is in a critical condition. I think you will be better to
see her before she passes away." I was completely overwhelmed by the unexpected news. My
grandmother raised me when I was young because my parents were busy with work, so she was very
special to me. As soon as I heard that news, I bought the earliest flight ticket for Korea immediately
and rushed to the airport with a baggy hoodie and old sweatpants on. Because the thought that I

Swot Analysis of Ryanair
2. Procedure
The research for this report, which is focused on a S.W.A.T. analysis on Ryanair, was fully based on
internet web sites. For full information, refer to the bibliography at the end of he report.
3. Findings
3.1 Strengths
a. Leadership in the low–cost sector
"Ryanair was Europe's original low fares airline and is still Europe's largest low fares carrier.
Currently the company carries over 35m. passengers on 325 low fare routes across 21 European
countries"( Ryanair).
As a matter of fact Ryanair is currently the largest low–cost company on the market with 12
European bases, a fleet of over 250 aircrafts and more than 2700 employees.
Moreover the company provides frequent point–to–point services which allows them to avoid ...

In addition the company is now recruiting its cabin crew in Poland and in Latvia in order to cut
further down its costs, the fact is that people spend enormous amounts of money(for their standards)
for a English course provided from the company in order to get a chance to get hired, which
represents not only a bad image but also a bad advertisement for Ryanair.
In general the whole staff is working under big pressure set by an overhead person and most
commonly with feelings of unsatisfaction.
b. Low quality services and attitudes towards customers
b.1. Disabled people
"Bob Ross successfully sued 'Britain's favourite airline' on January 30. Ross has stamina problems
as a result of having cerebral palsy and was charged 18 pounds by Ryanair for the use of a
wheelchair through the concourse of Stansted Airport. Other airlines absorb this cost but Ryanair
have been making disabled people pay extra" (BBC).
This example successfully shows how the company does not take care of all its customers in the
way it should be done, therefore this case was brought to court since it was found unacceptable the
fact that a disabled person had to pay for the transportation through the airport, which normally it is
a cost that is absorbed by the company. Unfortunately this is not their only case, in fact it has
happened that Ryanair had to unload from the

Introduction of Southwest Airline
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION OF SOUTHWEST AIRLINE
1.1 BACKGROUND OF SOUTHWEST
There is a very famous story about Southwest airline. According to this story King explain his idea,
the concept of the airline, to Kelleher during dinner. He drawn a triangle on a paper napkin. The
triangle shows three cities, and three routes, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Rolling King and
Herb Kelleher started their airline in March 15, 1967 and named it air Southwest. Unfortunately for
them, the airliner could fly in that time due to a joint lawsuit. The lawsuit was done by 5 big
airliners of that time, Braniff, Aloha Airlines, United Airlines, Trans–Texas, and Continental
Airlines. After three years of legal fight, the lawsuit was lifted and the airliner was ... Show more

They were also the pioneers in fun fares, senior discounts and the fun packs. In 1987, Southwest
Airlines took over TranStar Airlines and
1992 was a success year for Southwest with winning its first Triple Crown award and win it for
three continuous years. Triple Crown is an award provided by U.S. Department of Transportation for
an airliner who has three features: 1–best baggage handling; 2–best on–time record; 3–fewest
customer complaints during that year. They also continued to expand their destinations to more than
9 cities. In 1994, southwest took over Morris Air. This gave southwest a stronger edge in the market
Southwest distinguished itself from other airliners because during attacks on 2011 Sept. 11, it was
the only airliner who keep its schedule and has no discharged in coming years. They have 598
Boeing 737 and its average flight time is 2 hours.
1.2 MISSION
"The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the highest quality of Customer Service
delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit."
1.3 VISION
"Our vision is to expand our locations both domestic and overseas by being the largest and most
profitable airline company, to achieve both short– and long–haul carriers efficiently and with low
cost. Also to be an airline carrier that has the most productive workforce, to guarantee the best flight
possible for each and every passenger."

Aloha Airlines Case Analysis Essay
1. AIRCRAFT MISHAP TIMELINE
On 28 April 1988, Aloha Airlines Flight 243, a Boeing 747 based out of Honolulu International
Airport, Hawaii, began operations on what was scheduled for six inter–island flights. The First
Officer checked in with Aloha Airlines Flight Operations about 5:00am followed by the Captain
shortly after. The aircraft log was signed off and released for flight with no open write–ups. They
both completed pre–departure duties and proceeded to the aircraft. All pre–flight preparations were
performed in the crew compartment and a visual external aircraft inspection was performed. The
first officer was pleased with the aircraft after the walk–around and deemed it "Ready for flight".
The aircrew flew three round trip ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Captain immediately took the controls of the aircraft. All three flight crew members including
the air traffic controller, put on their oxygen masks. As the aircrew looked back they could see that
the cockpit door missing and they could see blue sky through the hole in the aircraft.
The aircraft was to some extent unstable and was responding to flight control inputs. Captain
immediately began a rapid emergency descent towards Kahului airport on the island of Maui. The
First Officer began calling Air Traffic Control (ATC) to report the flight divert and the state of
emergency. The First Officer could not hear an ATC reply due to the high noise of air blowing
through the crew compartment and cabin. On approach, the First Officer swapped over to the tower
radio frequency and made contact with ATC.
The tower dispatched the emergency response to the runway. The aircraft continued to approach the
airport at an appropriate and safe speed although the flight controls felt sluggish. The aircrew stated
that the controls felt "loose" with the aircraft rolling left and right. The gear was selected down and
the main gear down position light illuminated. The nose gear light did not illuminate. A manual
extension of the nose gear was performed but the gear light did not illuminate. The gear unsafe light
did not extinguish. Due to these indications the aircrew was given the impression that they would be
landing without the

Flight 214 Pilots

  • 1. Flight 214 Pilots Asiana Airlines Flight 214 Pilot Error Case Analysis Taylor White Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University ASCI 202: Introduction to Aeronautical Science ASIANAAIRLINES FLIGHT 214 PILOT ERROR CASE ANALYSIS I. Summary On July 16, 2013 Asiana Airlines Flight 214 operated by a Boeing 777–200ER was landing at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) destined from Incheon International Airport near Seoul, South Korea. The Boeing 777–200ER had accumulated 36,000 flight hours and 5,000 takeoff and landing cycles. The aircrew consisted of Captain Lee Jung Min, Captain Lee Kang Kuk and first officer Bong Dong–won. Captain Lee Jung Min was in the right seat and filled the role of check/instructor captain and pilot in command and had logged 12,387 hours ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... IV. Alternative Actions Action One: Repeal or loosen Asiana's policy on full use of automation. Advantages: Allowing to let the pilots choose when to use automation equipment would result in them being more vigilant and aware of what the aircraft is doing instead of assuming its right. Disadvantages: Doing so could lead to more crashes due to misjudgment of the pilot. Action Two: Ensure proper crew resource management (CRM) is being used in the cockpit. Advantages: Crew members being able to show their concern or make quick decisions to avoid an accident that they see coming but the others do not. Disadvantages: It could possibly lead to inexperienced crew members making poor decisions against the captains will because they think they are right. V. Recommendations Any airline policy that says pilots should rely on automation rather than their own judgement should be repealed. Although some human factors can lead to a crash there is no better system to use than human intuition or your "gut feeling". • 3. Qantas Market Segmentation The airline industry has long attempted to segment the air travel market in order to effectively target its constituents. The classic airline model consists of First Class, Business Class and Economy, and the demographics that make up the classes have both similarities and differences to the other classes. For instance there may be similarities between business class travellers on a particular flight, but they will not all be travelling for the same reason. An almost–universal characteristic of air travel is that customers do not fly for the sake of flying; the destination is the important element and the travel is a by–product, a means–to–an–end that involves the necessity of an aircraft that gets the customer from point A to point B. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recently Qantas has partnered up with Emirates in an effort to channel Europe–bound travellers through Dubai International Airport in a mutually beneficially arrangement, an example of business–to–business geographic segmentation marketing. Qantas encourages tourism by broadcasting the same television and print advertisement to both international and domestic customers with iconic images of Australia. This is a marketing strategy that serves multiple purposes, it stimulates Australian tourism abroad while firmly associating Australia with Qantas and also encourages 'brand loyalty' from Australians who wish to support their country. Because of the large variety of airlines both internationally and domestically, Qantas has marketed themselves towards service; they are the only "full–service" airline in Australia. Demographic The demographic characteristics of customers can be broken down by the class they choose to fly. First Class is chiefly attracting high–income earners, who are concerned with a high level of service and enjoy an air of exclusivity. These are knows as "comfort seekers" and they can include business magnates, federal politicians, sporting stars and a–list celebrities. The First Class market is highly concentrated; less than 3% of passengers will choose to fly First Class but those customers make up close to 30% in revenue for the airline (Keen and Strand 2007). • 5. Southwest Airlines Case Study The airline company of Southwest Airlines was founded in 1971 by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher. Southwest Airlines originally started by just servicing the Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio areas in Texas. Some things that Southwest became known for right off the bat were a frequent miles program, which allowed the traveler to bank traveler air miles to be latterly used credit for a free ticket or even some reduced airfare. Southwest also was ranked number one in its customer service for the fourth consecutive year in a row in 1984. Two years later, Southwest took over Transtar Airlines and also took over Morris Air in 1994. Some of the airlines that were around when Southwest started were Braniff, Aloha Airlines, United Airlines, Trans–Texas, and Continental Airlines. Some of these airline companies started legal action and began and began a long three year battle to try and keep Southwest Airlines on the ground. However, the U.S. Supreme Court declined the case on December 7, 1970. What was interesting about this certain event, is that a children's book, called Gumwrappers and Goggles by Winifred Barnum in 1983, was made from it. The children's book was later turned into a stage musical called Show Your Spirit, which was sponsored by Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines got a lot of it's corporate culture from the founder, Herb Kelleher, extensively studying the California–based Pacific Southwest Airlines. Southwest again found it's way to another legal controversy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every year the brightest minds in aviation compile the greatest technological advances towards creating the safest and most economical aircraft on the planet. No detail is over looked, and the bottom dollar is the all controlling factor. From private aircraft to public aircraft, space exploration and beyond, the future is bright for the passenger aircraft market, and everyone who purchases air travel should be excited to see how industry unfolds. Let's kick this off! For me, this topic hits home and in my pocket. My uncle, retired Coast Guard Captain Brian Murray, fly's for Emirates Airlines out of Dubai. Currently, Boeing Commercial employs over 80,000 workers in the United States supporting the Pacific Northwest and the South East portions of the country for main manufacturing headquarters. The second airline company that holds a majority stock in the passenger airliner world is Airbus. The flagship A380 double decker aircraft can carry over 525 passengers in three section configuration, over 800 passengers in a single class configuration. Airbus has been highlighting milestones and achievements for 40 years, boasting marks such as the first wide body twin engine airliner producer in 1974 to its record breaking arrival of the A380 in 2007. • 9. A Leading Airline Group With Effective Security Systems... 'A leading airline group with effective security systems and culture'. Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward. There is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within aviation, and the findings will play a key role in Qantas' ability to influence regulators. The focus for this project is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is evidence to suggest that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian markets. Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section of Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle Management and Frontline levels. Overarching themes encompassed the need for greater engagement including collaboration and a clearer understanding as to how security culture fits into the broader culture, specifically how security supports safety and is aligned to the brand values and desired organisational behaviours. • 11. Airport Terminal Passenger Movement Traveling across the country can be a challenge because of the many ways to chose from. Even when you and family decide to travel for a plan vacation, and take your personal vehicle it can be a hassle. How much time do you have seems to be a major factor, because if the drive is too long, how tired will you be after the trip. Of course there are trains and buses that can get you to your destination in a preferred time and will probably not be as busy and the lines will not be as long but the preferred choice and the biggest growing transportation industry is airlines. The security gates are the bottle neck of the airport terminal, because this is where the TSA agents are trained to save lives, so the searches can be long and uncomfortable at times. The security measures for airports have always been under scrutiny for people getting through security with all type of items for a long time. So security measures have changed over the years to become more consistent and firm during searches of passengers but things have been even more intense since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the nation. The challenge has been how to get large groups of passengers through the airport with as little problems as possible at a fast pace because of the huge turnover at the large airports each hour of the day. One of the ways the airport terminal use has caught much attention and some cases has been banned because when you go through the machine it appears to show a naked body. • 13. Descriptive Vacation On a hot summer day when my family and I were finally going to Hawaii I was the first one to have all my bags packed and to be out the door. I waited in the car for my family by watching my favorite youtuber on my phone. I was losing my patience because my parents were taking forever. "Mom! Dad! Hurry we need to be at the airport at one thirty and it's already twelve o clock! My luggage is already in the car! We need to hurry if we want to get to our hotel in time. We have to check in by 6:00 or they don't give us our room." I explained "We are almost done honey, we need to lock the house and make sure that none of the lights are on. Did you get your toothbrush and toothpaste? What about your ps4 are you taking that with you?" My mom asked. "Yes, I have everything. Let's just hurry and leave." I cried. During the long and what it felt like never ending car ride I looked at all of the beautiful sites outside. While hooked into the sights, someone called my name. It was my dad woke me up to tell me we finally made it to the airport. "Whoaaaaa! This airport is huge! Can we go into some of the shops before our flight? Wow look at that one! See's Candies looks like a chocolate heaven! Can we please go in there?" I asked. "No. We need to go through security and then we need to get to our section and board our flight. However, in this situation, strategy is; as Riley mentioned on the tutor2u website (2015), strategy is "Where is the business trying to get to in the long–term". Strategy is a planned pathway that a business needs to follow in order to achieve its aims and objectives for success. Every businesses strategy is different to one another, depending on the type of business and the market they operate in. however, there can be a few similarities between every business' strategies. Such as, Apple's strategy is very different each other, because they operate in two different markets, however there are a few similarities between the two, for example, high prices etc. Strategy is very important, and it has to be well planned, because the business can either achieve all its objectives successfully or fail entirely. Every business's strategy has its own strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the business has opportunities and threats as well, that can affect the business. • 17. Boeing Airlines And The Defense Market Essay Company's Market Boeing may only be one company, but they compete in two different markets: commercial airlines and the defense industry. The main competition in the commercial airline market is Airbus. Airbus and Boeing seem to have the commercial airline industry in a chokehold basically having no other competitors. Since the industry has high barriers to entry they will not see much competition anytime soon. Boeing is the American leader in commercial airplanes and Airbus is the European leader, which means they are constantly battling. Their competing aircrafts are the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747. Both companies have many variations of their respected aircraft and according to Business Insider, Airbus' A380 outranks the Boeing 747 based on cost, range, size and luxury. The defense market, Boeing aligns itself in is more complex than their commercial airline market. Boeing's main competitor in this market is Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Company. Even though all these companies may compete, each with each other they often create joint ventures because the defense industry requires a diverse product mix that one company may not be able to fulfill. One example of these ventures is when Boeing and Lockheed Martin come to together to own/operate Hellfire Systems, LLC which allows for both companies to sell AGM–114 Hellfire Missiles. This missile is used in the United States Army, Navy and Air Force so this is a very profitable venture for both Lockheed Martin and Boeing. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Regulation is usually considered a more socialistic liberal idea that is opposed by conservative capitalists. Today with prices rising, the airlines will not raise prices and instead try to run other companies into the ground by lowering prices. This is not healthy competition. Violation Of Grant Assurance 22 Essay In the past, the FAA has found a constructive grant of a prohibited exclusive right whenever a Sponsor violated Grant Assurance 22, without regard to the number of entities conducting the same aeronautical activities or providing the same services. Under current policy, the FAA will consider the presence of other entities at the airport engaged in the same activities before finding that a violation of Grant Assurance 22 is also a constructive violation of Grant Assurance 23. The Grant Assurance includes an exception that permits a single FBO if both of the conditions below are met: It would be unreasonably costly, burdensome, or impractical for more than one fixed–based operator to provide such services; and If allowing more than one FBO would require the reduction of space currently leased by the single FBO. In other words, even if it would be impractical for two FBOs to operate at the airport, if the Sponsor has vacant space that could accommodate a second FBO, it cannot rely on this exception to deny access to the second FBO. In addition, the FAA interprets Grant Assurance 23 to permit a Sponsor to offer commercial aeronautical services with its own employees and equipment on an exclusive basis. Clearly, there is an economic motive behind airline operation of "geriatric" planes. A Boeing 737, for example, cost around $25 million at present, so that, " it is in the economic interest of an airline to prolong the life of its current fleet if it can do so at reasonable cost and without compromising safety." In the opinion of some critics, given the competitive pressures of a de–regulated market environment, some airlines are paying too much attention to this economic imperative, and, conversely, too little care to the maintenance of adequate safety standards. Most jet transport accidents are not the result of equipment failure; a full two–thirds can be attributed to human error. At present, all U.S. air carriers, major airlines and regionals alike, are facing a reduced pool of qualified pilots and flight personnel to staff their crews. De–regulation has meant a higher level of demand for a finite number of qualified crew members, and, at the same time, the number of potential crew members leaving the nation's armed forces (the traditional mainstay of new hires for the airlines) has dropped sharply in recent years. On the whole, it is, in fact, comparatively safe to fly, and even with 1989 crash incidents added to the aggregated figures, flying is no more dangerous today than it was prior to deregulation. The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and an array of independent air safety experts have all probed this year's major airline accidents. Despite all of post hoc study, they have been unable to discern a common link among them, (Ott p.28) with one major exception. The qualification at hand refers to dramatic increase in the volume of air traffic since de– regulation. According to NTSB member John Lauber, " ' if there is a trend in accidents, it is a trend set by the increasing volume of air transport operations rather than any fundamental deterioration in the margins of safety (Ott p.28).' " At first glance, this argument is comforting: more flights in the air simply result in more accidents commensurate with higher traffic volumes, so that the impact of de–regulation has had only the broadest and most indirect influences upon the industry's safety record. But to ascribe the recent rash of safety problems to the "neutral" effect of higher traffic volume in the wake of de–regulation and leave it at that overlooks several critical points. I've learned so much about Hawaii and its values including Aloha and now I know it doesn't only mean that. Aloha can mean "love. Aloha can mean "farewell". After I got into Kapiolani Community College, I had chance to get to know Hawaiian values and each time I'm amazed how each word have deep and thoughtful meanings. And Aloha is the basis of most of the other Hawaiian spirits. Therefore, without knowing Aloha, it's close to impossible to understand Hawaiian cultural values and that's why I wanted to introduce little about Aloha before I jump into the introduction of my three favorite values. In the book, Aloha is mentioned as "outpouring and receiving of the spirit" (Say, 17). Though my understanding of the word Aloha and other Hawaiian values grew from the last few semesters in KCC, I still learned a lot from reading this book and that definition of Aloha is one of the teaching from this book. This book often related the Hawaiian values to the supervisor / managing positions in the hospitality industry and how he defined managers in hospitality industry in Hawaii made me interested to read this book; he defined as "Ambassadors of the Aloha spirit" (Say, 7). Ba Research Report Essay A research report with a word limit of 1,500 on British Airway's (BA) change program that resulted in long–running industrial disputes between its management and crew members in 2009–2011. The contextual information about the BA's introduction of strategic changes – why BA produced this change, explain market (rising fuel costs etc.) British Airways is the UK's largest airline. Since becoming privatized in 1987, BA has continued to grow despite increased competition (Connell & Williamson, 2011). The UK's economic climate had a large influence to why the British Airways' industrial occurred. The 'unfreezing' phase (Lewin's model) of this change was a gradual, drawn–out process. Time: As this was not a company in crisis there wasn't a need to implement change reactively, British Airways had time to achieve their long–term strategy. Scope: British Airways did not require a transformation of the organisation as a whole. A realignment of the cabin crew's operations and wage structure was the desired scope for this change. However, due to the industrial action taken by Unite the change had an impact organisation–wide. Preservation: It is important that BA preserves what makes British Airways, British Airways. This means they need to retain their brand identity, because this is one of their biggest selling points. It is also important to not destroy the business' heritage and culture. Job security for the remaining cabin crew will be at an all–time low. Key members of staff need to be reassured of their position so that BA doesn't lose these assets to competitors. Diversity: The change should not affect diversity between divisions. This means that the culture should remain consistent throughout BA, from pilots, to cabin crew, to administration staff. Capability: The individual within the cabin crew will need to be capable of adapting to the new operational requirements and be able to accept the change in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, JetBlue established a new terminal at JFK airport which facilitated an improvement in respects to on–time departure and arrival averages at one of the nation's busiest airports. Furthermore JetBlue had sold a stake of its shares to Lufthansa which not only improved JetBlue's revenues, but it allowed JetBlue's customers to fly on Lufthansa flights to Germany. JetBlue scheduled to reduce capacity and cut costs by selling nine A–320 aircrafts along with postponing the purchase or lease of numerous other aircrafts. Furthermore, the company reduced its aircraft utilization rate from 13 hours per day to 12.5 hours, halting service in three cities and canceling future services. JetBlue started to grow in selective markets and raised its fares. In March 2008, JetBlue declared that Orlando would become its seventh focus city, which would provide service to Cancun, Mexico and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. November 21, 2007 Dogfight over Europe: Ryanair (A) In April, 1986, the upstart Irish airline Ryanair announced that it would soon commence service between Dublin and London. For nearly a year, the new airline had operated a 14–seat turboprop between Waterford, in the southeast of Ireland, and Gatwick Airport on the outskirts of London. The founders of Ryanair, brothers Cathal and Declan Ryan, felt that service on that first route had developed well. They knew, however, that the Dublin–London route would pose new challenges. For the first time, they would face Aer Lingus, British Airways, and other established competitors on a major route. European Aviation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Intra–country service was also regulated strictly. To varying degrees, domestic fares were set by government authorities, and entry by new airlines was discouraged. The collapse of European empires and the advent of jets capable of crossing the Atlantic economically led virtually all European flag carriers to refocus their international efforts on routes across the North Atlantic in the late 1950s. Heavy and growing demand for transportation to and from North America made such routes highly profitable, at least initially. Europe's system of regulation soon came under pressure. A late–1950s attempt to unify the flag carriers of France, West Germany, Belgium, and Italy collapsed under the weight of disparate national interests. By 1960, the Economist magazine bemoaned the state of the heavily regulated, fragmented airline industry. "The basic trouble," it concluded, "remains that the world has too many airlines, most of them inefficient, undercapitalised and unprofitable."4 Though the IATA introduced some forms of restricted, discount fares in the 1950s, consumers grew dissatisfied with high prices. European regulations applied largely to regularly scheduled service between destinations. To bypass these regulations and to tap pent–up demand for leisure travel, charter airlines appeared and grew rapidly during the 1960s. Introduction Since the 1980s the situation in the civil aviation industry has changed dramatically, and although the government still retains some form of in–direct control over the aviation sector and the 'former' national airlines in specific, issues related to economization and efficiency of the business enterprise take primacy in dictating strategic and operational decisions of the airline operators. This shift in the approach to the regulation of the aviation sector around the globe has also greatly influenced issues related to workforce organization in this industry, especially in the Western world. The opening of new markets within the EU exposed many national carriers to strong competition. This trend has been furthered by the continuous liberalization of the global aviation industry and specifically the recent OpenSkies agreement between EU and the US which allows the national carriers to arrange the Atlantic flights from the airports that are not airlines' ports of origin. (BATA, 2010). Latest developments on the British political scene create strong pressure on the costs of operations for all the British carriers. The recently proposed raised taxation will put a huge disadvantage on the British civil aviation industry. The new Government (2010) also introduced policy of blocking airport expansion in the South East of England (McGhie, 2010). 2.2 Economic factors From the economic perspective there have been few main points of pressure on the strategy of British Airways. The 2008 global recession, the worst economic downturn since 1930s, continuous high unemployment rates, along with the fluctuation of the British Pound continue to negatively influence all businesses. Amidst the crisis, trade unions demanded greater government intervention to support employment levels. Yet, in order to preserve employment levels, collective agreements between UK social partners at organizational level set new standards of reduced working time (Eiroonline, 2010). Khalid Khan) Title: " Emerging Challenges in Airport Management – Way Forward " Introduction: The last few years has seen an exponential growth in the aviation industry. Aviation infrastructure has expanded to include hundreds of airports and airlines around the world. New airports have mushroomed in places which were hardly known to the world, existing airports have upgraded their facilities, new terminals have come up and multiple airlines have been setup. The volume of people who choose aviation as a transport has considerably grown. The aviation industry is in full bloom and so are the problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Major expansion of one part may necessitate expansion of another. For example, adding new runways and increasing the number of airside operations will result in the need for new gates and more terminal waiting areas for passengers. Another problem often encountered in expansion is the lack of suitable land. Many airports are closely surrounded by urbanized areas, land that would be extremely expensive to acquire. In many metropolitan areas, a suitable tract of land might be distant from the city center, making ground access a problem. In selecting a distant site, several questions arise. If a new airport is a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, the existing airport, would passengers be willing to travel that far to use it? Would air carriers be willing to serve an airport that might attract fewer passengers than the old airport? These questions above need to be answered in order for funds to come easily and satisfaction of both the government and the public. This has become a major issue in today`s world of fast moving aviation. The following points help keep a check on airport development and initiate proper release of funds for the same. a) Drafting a sound financing strategy with realistic projects. b) Encouraging private investments and review public financing options. c) Understanding the new airport management concepts. d) Introducing the brand awareness concept in ... Although some researchers argue that service quality is an individual judgement, defined purely by the customer about the excellence or superiority of a service provider's performance (A. Edelin, 2011). This is as a result of the promise/proposition the brand provides that specific service to a set of consumers; thus British Airways should aim to maintain a strong brand identity in order to preserve long–term customer loyalty, as well as maintain a nationwide appeal in order to reduce overall perceived risk (Sweeney, 2000). Gm Vs Southwest Hedging Strategy Essay Financial risk is the risk a corporation faces due to its exposure to market factors such as interest rates, foreign exchange rates, commodities and stock prices. Financial risks for the most part, can be hedged due to the existence of large, efficient markets through which these risks can be transferred. This is unlike operating risk, which is associated with more manufacturing and marketing activities. Operating risk cannot be hedged because these risks are not traded. In GM's case they used a passive hedging policy in which they hedged 50% of all significant foreign exchange exposures arising from cash flows associated with ongoing business. Passive hedging is used by highly risk–averse companies that would like to be completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Southwest is able to achieve a balance between hedging risk and the cost of hedging by hedging part of its overall exposure either through a long–term contract or a derivative instrument, and keeping the remainder of the exposure un–hedged so as to benefit from favorable market movements, either through exercise of options or deals in the spot market. Domestic airlines have a variety of hedging strategies available to them. These include using both over–the–counter and exchange–traded derivatives. Options, including collar structures, and swaps are the primary derivatives used by airlines. Many, including Southwest have stated that they prefer over–the–counter derivatives to exchange traded futures because they are more customizable1. The ability to customize these contracts greatly facilitates the implementation of a dynamic hedging strategy, which is successfully used by Southwest. This strategy is based on the presumption that the oil price cycle moves in cycles rather than consistently in one direction. To implement a dynamic hedging strategy, a firm needs to vary the products over the oil price cycle. When oil is at the low point in the cycle, receive–fixed swaps are used because the likelihood of further price declines is not considered as probable as price increases, and the swap contract allows the airline to lock in the relatively low price. In the mid–range of the cycle, collars are used to lock in a specified range of prices, giving up potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Experience Of A Stereotype Against The Physical Appearance An experience of a stereotype against the physical appearance Recently, UNICEF released a video to promote their campaign for needy children, however it presents a stereotype against the physical appearance rather than the campaign. In the video, a 6–year–old girl who dressed pretty and neatly stood alone on a street and many people asked her whether she was all right. Later, when the same girl had changed her appearance in dirty clothes and stood alone again in the same street, nobody asked her whether she was okay. The attitudes that people showed depended on the child's physical appearance. I have a similar experience. The experience that I realized how people are offended by others who judge people based on the physical appearances was when I waited the delayed airplane to go to Korea, a manager ignored me since I didn't dress up neatly, however he changed his attitude politely as soon as he noticed I was a VIP in his company. A few years ago, my mom called me in the night and said urgently, "Your grandmother is in a critical condition. I think you will be better to see her before she passes away." I was completely overwhelmed by the unexpected news. My grandmother raised me when I was young because my parents were busy with work, so she was very special to me.
