02. risk assessment UPDATED
1. Risk assessment
All employers must conduct a risk assessment. If you have fewer than five employees you don't have to write anything down.
We have started off the risk assessment for you by including a sample entry for a common hazard to illustrate what is expected (the sample entry is taken from an office-based business).
Look at how this might apply to your business, continue by identifying the hazards that are the real priorities in your case and complete the table to suit.
You can print and save this template so you can easily review and update the information as and when required. You may find our example risk assessments a useful guide
(http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/casestudies). Simply choose the example closest to your business.

What are the
hazards?
Who might be harmed and how? What are you already doing? Do you need to do anything else to
control this risk?
Action by who? Action by
when?

Trips- bedroom,
landing, bathroom,
kitchen
Myself, being crew and an actor as well
as any other crew members present. I
and the other crew members could trip
over equipment, such as a leg of the
tripod, or anything else that could have
fallen over or the edge of any furniture.
I am currently making sure nothing is going to
be within the pathways the crew and I would
be using as well as making sure things are
not put on the edge of tables/ desks/ counters
to decrease the risk of something falling over.
I will make sure the crew are informed
about any lose wires if there are any
as well as making sure they know to
be careful when moving around the
space as to not trip/ hurt themselves
on the edge of any furniture.

Stairs I will need to carry the equipment down
the stairs as well as set it up at the top
and bottom of the stairs. This means the
camera could fall down the stairs or
someone could fall and knock it down at
the bottom.
I already know that I need to insure the
camera is securely in place on the tripod and
that no one that is not crew, family using the
house, is going to be near or in the way of the
shoot to minimize the number of risks.
I will need to make sure anyone
needing to use the stairs is aware of
the camera’s position and that they will
be careful when ascending and
descending the stairs.

Spills When in the kitchen, the crew and I will
need to make sure we don’t leave the
milk close to the edge of the counter and
I will need to make sure I don’t spill it
when pouring.
I have chosen the counter that will give us
room to place the props on it without
increasing this risk. I will not pour too quickly
to help reduce my risk of spilling it.
I will make sure that there is minimal
people as possible in the room when
filming in order to reduce the risk of
knocking into me as I am pouring the
milk.

Damaging
equipment
When in the kitchen pouring the milk, the
crew will need to make sure the camera
does not come into contact with the milk
as it could damage it.
I am going to coordinate exactly where the
camera will be in relation to the milk so that
they are far enough apart that if the milk is
spilt or some of it splashes in a particular
direction it will not hit the camera.
I will need to get someone from a
media class, now or previous, in order
to have a crew member that
understands the price of the
equipment and the experience of using
it.

Trips- front door,
student gate,
outside school,
outside sixth form
The actors, crew and I could trip over on
rubbish or on uneven ground, this could
cause them to fall over and hurt
themselves.
I am checking around for rubbish and making
sure on the shooting days I have removed all
the rubbish.
I will make sure to make the actors
and crew aware of any uneven ground
that could cause them to trip.

2. Dropping equipment If the crew or I trip or in correctly carry the
equipment during the shoots it could
severely damage the equipment.
I already know to hold the camera with 2
hands and with the strap around my neck, as
well as not carrying more than a safe amount
for my strength and ability to control and
securely hold the equipment.
I will need to inform the crew of the
safest way to carry the equipment and
the areas in which they can put the
equipment down as to not be in a
place where it can be damaged.

Trips- classroom
1,2,3 and 4, study,
medical block,
Jane’s room
The actors, crew and I could all trip on left
over rubbish from previous lessons,
break time and lunch time as well as
knocking things off of tables/ desks.
I am making sure I am aware of my
surroundings when walking around the
spaces.
I will inform the crew and actors that I
am make sure I am aware of my
surroundings and encourage them to
do the same.

Automatic doors The automatic doors on the entrance to
the Sixth Form building may malfunction/
stop working. This has happened many
times, as people are walking through-
getting court in the middle. This could
happen to the actors, crew or myself.
I have already come up with a backup plan: I
will use the side entrance of the Sixth Form
building if the doors refuse to work.
If the doors do start to close/ won’t
open I will need to make sure all the
actors and crew are out of the way so
they will be safe from the doors.

You should review your risk assessment if you think it might no longer be valid (eg following an accident in the workplace or if there are any significant changes to hazards, such as new work equipment
or work activities)
