Black Lives Matter
In my FYS for a week we had a librarian in there showing us how to cite and find credible
sources. We were supposed to be researching the “Black Lives Matter” movement. On the first
day we had the librarian we were told to do a free write on Black Lives Matter. The free write
was whether we thought it was a valid movement and slogan or not. I said it was not a valid
movement or slogan. After everyone did their free writes we were put in two teams. All of the
No’s were on one and the Yes’s on the other. Once everyone was in their specific groups we
were told that we would have a debate about “Black Lives Matter”. The catch was that the No’s
were Yes’s and the Yes’s were No’s. So everyone had the side of the argument that was against
their opinion. We were then all given the rest of the week the librarian was there to help us find
sources for our arguments. On the final day we had the librarian in class we had the debate. The
people who were originally No’s but Yes’s during the debate ended up winning.
I thought that this assignment was very useful. It taught the class how to find accurate up to
date sources. It was also made very easy. Because of what we did in class for that week I’m sure
mine and my classmates’ future papers will be great. Not only will they be great but we’ll be
able to find credible sources in less time. Therefore giving us more time to work on other papers
and homework. I also thought that makes the teams argue against what they originally thought
was a very good critical thinking assignment. This assignment also caused some people to
2. change their opinion about the “Black Lives Matter” movement. I wasn’t one of the people
whose opinion changed though. It made me rethink my opinion but not change it. I gained more
knowledge about the subject but I’m still against it. Overall I think it was a good assignment.
Everyone in class got a lot out of it.
