Who are the people in the photograph?
1. The people in the first photograph are four woman.
2. The people in the second photograph are Adolf Hitler, a child and then 4 other individuals.
3. In the third photograph there are a few white police men with dogs, whereas everyone else seem to be
African American males and females.
4. In the fourth photograph there is one man and the statue of liberty.
5. In the fifth there looks to be a mother, father and child.
6. Finally the sixth image has, military men and civilians interacting.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
1. In the first picture it looks like the women are cooking. I say this because they are in a kitchen with pots
and pans all out. Three are at the oven and the fourth is mixing things at the table.
2. In the second picture, Hitler is happily holding a child’s hand. The child is smiling up at him and
everyone else in the image look very happy about the situation.
3. In the third picture a large crowd has formed around the police officers with the dogs. The policemen
seem like they are keeping the crowd back while one dog bites an African American male. I say this
because there is a large space between the police men and the dog biting the man.
2. 4. In the fourth picture a man has either hung himself or been hanged from the Statue of Liberty’s torch. I
say this because there is a rope tied around his neck and the torch and he is hanging from the rope.
5. The situation in the fifth picture is three people standing and looking over the water at the Statue of
Liberty. Their backs are facing me and the statue is off in the distance but still visible.
6. The sixth image is kind of tricky but, it seems to me that the military men are doing check-ups on the
civilians to see if they are healthy enough for the military. I say this because the civilians are all males
and look like they have been examined.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
1. I think the first message is to show what women had to do before they had equal rights.
2. I think the message of the second picture is even though Hitler did awful things he was still human.
3. I think the third picture is trying to give an idea of how things were before everyone had equal rights.
4. I think that the fourth picture is trying to say that our freedom isn’t free itself.
5. I think the fifth picture conveys the message of how immigrants felt when they came to this country.
6. I think the sixth picture’s message is that only the best of the best can be in the military.
Why is this photograph important to history?
1. It's important because the first image is from a time period where women only did house work and didn't
have equal rights.
2. The second image is important to history because it is from when Hitler was over Germany.
3. The third picture looks to me like it is from the time of segregation which makes it important to history.
4. The fourth picture is important because it could be from when America was first given the Statue of
Liberty.
3. 5. The fifth picture is important to history because it looks like it is from a time where immigrants were
first coming to America.
6. The sixth image is important because it is from when women weren't allowed in the military.
What questions does this photograph raise?
1. What are they cooking?
2. Was Hitler really a decent person?
3. Are the policemen making things better?
4. Why is the man hanging from the Statue of Liberty?
5. When did they come to America?
6. What are the policemen actually doing?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
1. Four women making dinner for their families.”
2. “I will make Germany better for the future.”
3. “A protest during the times of segregation.”
4. “Give me liberty or give me death.”
5. “Finally, we have a new home.”
6. “The military looking for recruits.”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
For all of the photographs you could go to a historic website.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
4. 1- All six of the photos are very old and tell a story about the past.
2- The only thing that I could possibly say that links the photographs together is that, they all seem to be from
tragic places in history.
3- Things aren't always like what society wants them to be.
