TOPIC: Parallel structures with comparisons
When comparing, you point out the differences and similarities between two things, and
those similarities and differences must be parallel. To do this, different comparative
structures are used such as: the famous “-er than” structure, more than, less than, as …
as, the same … as, similar to, etc. These are used to compare two things. So, your job is
to find those two things that are being compared in the sentence and check that they are
parallel – they have the same structure.

NOTE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES
1. My school is farther than your school.
2. To be rich is better than to be poor.
3. What is written is more easily understood than what is spoken.
4. Their car is as big as a small house.
5. Renting those apartments costs about the same as leasing them.
6. The work that I did is similar to the work that you did.
Observe two things in each sentence: the comparative structure in the middle of the
sentence, and the two things being compared. The two things being compared are very
similar in structure, so they are parallel.
_________
ALWAYS: Pay attention to words like comparative expressions in sentences. Make sure
that you find the two things being compared and that they are parallel.
