TOPIC: Pronouns: possessive adjectives and pronouns
It is very important to know that there is something called POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES and
POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS, since these are very common in English and are likely to be
tested in any TOEFL exam. You must be able to recognize them and know when to use
them correctly.

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
These are adjectives and always go before the noun they describe.
For example: my car, your house, their sister.
If there is no noun to describe, there can’t be any possessive adjectives.
POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
A pronoun is a word that substitutes or replaces a noun. So, possessive pronouns do not
accompany nouns. They go alone. For example, “This book is mine.” (Not, “This book is
mine book.”) or “That is hers. (Not, “That is hers cellphone.”)

NOTE: Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns are used differently. Possessive
adjectives go before nouns, and possessive pronouns do not.
