The Red Scare of McCarthyism
Red Scare: McCarthyism
"No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices."
–Edward R. Murrow (Goodreads.com)
The Red Scare, also known as, McCarthyism started in the early 1950's. It got the name
McCarthyism from Senator Joseph Raymond McCarthy. McCarthy started The Red Scare. It was
very similar to a witch hunt but, it wasn't witches they were hunting for. They were searching for
communist. The Red Scare was a horrible and cruel period during the early 1900's. During the Cold
War communist began to emerge. Communist are people who follow or believe in communism.
They were such a small group that no one paid much attention to them until after World War 2.
When WW II ended communist started causing problems. They already took power in other
countries and Americans began to fear they would do the same to the U.S. They wondered if Soviet
Spies were in America secretly advertising communism. U.S. citizens even questioned if communist
were involved in U.S. government jobs or in schools miseducating students and children. To help
calm down these fears Joseph Raymond McCarthy started McCarthyism. (Shmoop.com)
McCarthyism was the going away or getting rid of communist in the U.S. McCarthy began to gain
followers who also wanted to get rid of these undercover people. (World Book 332–333) The
Government searched federal employees and asked questions like the type of books and magazines
they read, organizations they were part of, and if they

The Social Impact Of Edward Murrow
There have been many issues with journalists being honest or dishonest in our generation. Not all of
journalist are bad, there are many great ones who have impacted society in positive ways.
Journalism is the activity or profession of writing for magazines, newspapers, news websites, or
they prepare news stories to be broadcasted to the public (Journalism.org). Edward Murrow said,
"To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; credible we must be
truthful." This holds true because the world does not want to hear false stories, they want to hear
credible ones, Edward Murrow shows that by his truthfulness and his dedication to journalism.
Murrow has impacted society in positive ways including his accuracy, political knowledge, and his
social impact. Edward Murrow was born on April 25th, 1908, in Polecat Creek, North Carolina.
When he was only six years old, his family moved across the country to Western Washington which
was only thirty miles from the Canadian border. In nearby Edison, he attended high school and was
president of the student body his senior year. He also succeeded exceptionally on the debate team in
high school and was further a member of the basketball team which won the county championship.
After he graduated from high school, Murrow studied political science, speech, and international
relations at Washington State University. In college he was very active in college politics which
would help him for his future. He started

Good Morning Vietnam: History Vs. Hollywood
Good Morning Vietnam: History v. Hollywood In the 1987 film, Good Morning Vietnam, Robin
Williams portrays real Armed Forces Radio DJ, Adrian Cronauer. While this film is meant to be
more of a light–hearted take on the Vietnam War and was not written to be historically accurate, it is
still loosely based on the experiences of Cronauer. This film is not very accurate to the events of
Adrian Cronauer's life, however, it gives us an accurate look into what was going on in during the
Vietnam War in 1965. Good Morning Vietnam is set in 1965 in Saigon, Vietnam. Disc Jockey
Adrian Cronauer is sent to Saigon from Crete, Greece to be the new Armed Forces Radio DJ. In the
beginning of the film Cronauer is met by Private Edward Montesquieu Garlick ... Show more

film maker's intentions to change the way Americans viewed the war, and for the most part it did
not, but it did intend to give the viewers insight on what it was like there. According to Time

Murk Evaluating Sources
Part One: Evaluation of Sources This investigation is based on a combination of primary and
secondary sources. The most valuable primary source is from "See It Now," a series broadcasted by
CBS, produced by Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly, and hosted by Murrow. The show ran
from 1951–1958 and is regarded as a turning point in news broadcasting. The program had a
reputation of being an honest and thoughtful presentation of current events. The episode titled "A
Report on Senator Joseph R. McCarthy" aired on March 9th, 1954. Murrow discussed the
communist hunt launched by McCarthy and extensively used excerpts McCarthy's speeches. The
source used is a video recording of the actual episode aired in 1954. There is no paraphrasing or
interpretation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an issue that historians face daily. "To what extent" is largely a matter of opinion based on
the given facts. After gathering data and sources, I was able to intuitively determine the extent to
which Murrow's broadcast affected McCarthy's political career.
Throughout this investigation, many types of sources were used. Primary source recordings to books
written by historians alike point to the same conclusion: Murrow's famous broadcast planted seeds
of dissent in public opinion and marked the beginning of the end for McCarthy's political career.
Every source used for this investigation supports this conclusion, which indicates that further
research should be done. This investigation is lacking in sources demonstrating that Murrow was
unimportant in McCarthy's political career. In this way, this investigation is biased in support of
Murrow. Even if this investigation had more sources supporting the opposite perspective, a slight
bias would still be present. One of the greatest challenges of history is maintaining

Good Night And Good Luck Analysis
Legendary CBS News broadcaster Edward R. Murrow is a journalist who made history with
exposing Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Although the story will go down in history, with the help of
the movie Good Night, and Good Luck directed by George Clooney, how much is known of the
historically accurate story. While some could argue that George Clooney and producer, Grant
Heslov, made the screenplay naive, others disagree. Many may even state that it was well researched
and followed the original weekly CBS story, See It Now, accurately. Both are easily arguable.
In the movie, Good Night, and Good Luck, it is portrayed that many people or news companies were
too afraid of McCarthy to stand up to him. Although by the time the show, See It Now, aired on the
9th of March, 1954, many people wanted to remove McCarthy from chairman. Many Republicans
joined Democrats in publicly denouncing him, including Richard Nixon. Many would state that
mainstream news was also very anti–McCarthy, including Time Magazine and Chicago Tribune.
Another red flag that may make people question the accurateness of this film is the changing in
minor details, including the beginning of this movie when the date of the RTDNA Convention in
Chicago is displayed on October 25th , 1985 when the Convention was held on October 12th, 1958 .
Also, Murrow's keynote address is introduced by a man who talks about the issues that Murrow
reported on . This includes exploitation of migrant workers, while this is true, Murrow

Edward R. Murrow In Good Night And Good Luck
Edward R. Murrow, prominent figure in journalism, portrayed the world of news reporting through
lenses that could only see raw honesty and concision. In the film directed by George Clooney, 'Good
Night and Good Luck', David Strathaim played as Edward R. Murrow during the downfall of Joseph
McCarthy. This very period of Murrow's life was near his resignation to live broadcasting at CBS,
and most of the events that happened in between were the cause of his leave. Essentially, Murrow
took honesty head on, but CBS saw it from a weaker angle.
Since Murrow would only broadcast the hard truth, he decided to report on McCarthy's claims

Edward R. Murrow Analysis
1. Why did the public acclaim for Edward R. Murrow's World War II radio broadcasts help his
controversial "Radulovich" and "McCarthy" TV programs, and How were the economic
vulnerabilities of commercial TV exploited by President Lyndon B. Johnson in order to create a
surprise news event that interfered with Fred Friendly's live coverage of the 1966 U.S. Senate
Hearings on Vietnam?
Edward R. Murrow is a universally recognized, courageous news broadcaster who brought stories to
life through radio and television programs. He developed the term "broadcast journalism," earning
creditability with his eyewitness coverage of the London bombing which gave him the public
acclaim "As Kendrick noted, he was recognized as "a proficient debater, and preferred the spoken
word, never having been a writing journalist" (Kendrick, p.214).
Murrow worked for CBS as an American radio news correspondent covering World War II. He
experienced first hand the Blitz on London, the bombing of the city by the Germans on September
7, 1940. Late nights or early mornings, Murrow constantly broadcast in London. "'He lived on

What Is Edward R. Murrow Reporting Style
Edward R. Murrow's Reporting Style in Modern America
Edward R. Murrow's reporting style, established in both radio and television, has had a profound
and lasting effect on broadcast journalism and the newscast format. In addition to developments like
the news round–up, one major innovation of Murrow's continues to play a crucial role in news
reporting, particularly of the 2016 election, and that is the compilation and employment of previous
media products, such as radio and television recordings, and news publications, in order to
conceptualize, analyze, and lampoon a contemporary political figure, as exemplified by Murrow's
report on Joseph McCarthy. The preservation of this reporting style throughout media's transitions,
television's in particular, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Arthur Miller's Good Night, And Good Luck
A term coined in the 1950s, McCarthyism is the general act of making accusations of treason or
subversion without proper regard for evidence. Both Arthur Miller's The Crucible and George
Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck explore the theme of McCarthyism through numerous ways
using conventions of their text types: respectively a play and a film. Each through characterisation
and symbolism, as well as individually through the plays title and narrative style, and the films
editing, camera techniques and sound track, the texts delve into the subject constructively through
their own unique methods.

The main character of the film is Edward R. Murrow, the elegant and severe face of CBS News See

filter exhibits him as an imposing ostentatious figure, flamboyantly smoking a cigarette between his
fixed positioned fingers. His voice is a perfect imitation of the real Murrow's hardened scowl with
dry drone–like delivery, expelling gravitas, courage and confidence as he devotes himself to report
the truth in the face of McCarthy's corruption. This nostalgic view of Murrow steals the attention of
viewers from his era, especially when reciting his famous monologues on air revealing McCarthy
for what he is doing. McCarthy however, is only displayed through existing historic footage of him.
This is accompanied by his gravelly and rather grating, monotonous voice, of which becomes
repetitive and intrusive as the news team periodically look through footage of his speeches to use
against him. This contrast of characterisation between Murrow and McCarthy clearly shows that
they are respectively good and evil counterparts of one another.

Edward R. Murrow was the most influential figure in the history of broadcast journalism. Egbert
Roscoe Murrow was born on April 25th, 1908 on a small farm in Polecat Creek, North Carolina,
which is located near Greensboro, North Carolina. His family moved to a small town near the

(Wesherba 15) He pioneered live international radio broadcasts during the early days of World War
II. His work set the standards for fair minded reporting. Towards the end of his career, his efforts
even brought about the downfall of one of America's most notorious Senators. Joseph R. McCarthy,
the Republican Senator of Wisconsin, began a campaign quest against communistic influence. Most
people witnessed it as a diligent search for renegades by an enthusiastic loyalist, and then others
perceived it to be a federalist opportunity, by victimizing situations in order to gain political impact
by browbeating the public. The circumstances surrounding McCarthy, was overwhelmed with
feelings and emotions since television gave very little detail and was treated with kid gloves.
Edward Murrow broke the realism about McCarthy on the evening of March 9, 1954, by sharing
video footage that shown that the Senator was up to no good, and was abusing his political power to
do so. Murrow and co–editor Fred Friendly gave controversial information on the man and his
shenanigans. In turn, the realization of what Senator McCarthy was truly about, and the evidence
that Murrow presented in a live broadcast, eventually

Setting in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest Essay
Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a unique fiction novel about oppression and
rebellion in an American 1950's Mental Hospital. In this highly distinctive novel, setting definitely
refers to the interior, the interiors of the Institution. It also refers to the period this novel this was set

representing issues such as the American struggle of freedom and conformity. This essay shall

Also, any person who unpatriotically supported communism was harshly dealt with. These events
were represented in an exact scale model of the Mental Institution. Anyone who dared to cause an

such as McMurphy, lobotomy. In the hospital, McMurphy represented the rebel, the opposer to the
Combine (McCarthyism), the one who wanted to break free of society's conformity.
Setting is also important, as it refers to the period this book was set in, the 1950's. Ultimately, it is a
reflection of what was happening in American society at the time, and what American society
expected from each other. McCarthyism, as started by Senator Joseph McCarthy, was the most
prevalent movement of the 1950's, where there was great momentum for anti–communism and the
suppression of the Anti–communist party. Freedom of speech was suppressed, just like speech and
actions were inside the hospital. Here, the Combine and Nurse Ratched act like the McCarthy
"representatives", where the patients are seen as members of the public, having their every word and
movement under close scrutiny.
Kesey has also given this novel great Symbolic value. As an opposer to the McCarthy scheme, he
has used the mental hospital as a scale model of how society breaks free of society's conformity.

Essay on Divergent Viewpoints
The nature of conflicting perspectives is to explore differing values and ideas, through the
representation of the events, people and situations, which in some way impact on the composer and
the reader. Composers often manipulate their representations for their own purpose and these
conflicting perspectives exist because of the eternal subjectivity of composers. Hughes' 20th century
confessional poems, "Fulbright Scholars" and "Your Paris" offers a perspective on his tempestuous
relationship with Plath, persuading the reader that he was the victim suffocating under Plath's mental
instability. Similarly, George Clooney's (2005) American dramatic film, "Good Night and Good

The use of ironic imagery discharges an emotive, personal tone which in turn persuades the reader to
empathise with Hughes as he was "dumbfounded afresh" by Plath.
Consequently, individuals can be selective in their choices when representing a person, event or
situation and omit key elements, controlling the response of the responder. Similar to how Hughes'
anthology, "Birthday Letters", expressed through inherent subjectivity, George Clooney's 1950's era,
Good Night and Good Luck, echoes this as he represents this idea through the media. Through
filmic devices, Clooney explores the tension between the perspectives of reporters at CBS and
Senator Joseph McCarthy in viewing McCarthy's actions as he, "takes charge... of Communist
infiltration". Just as Hughes' relationship with Plath raised questions from public opinion, but he
dismisses their viewpoints through his emotional poetry. Clooney uses Edward R. Murrow to expose
Senator McCarthy as a fear monger of communism in his television segment, "See it Now", as he
presents his story from a low angle shot. This presents Murrow in a powerful position as he uses the
media to announce his perspective on McCarthy to the citizens of America. As he addresses the
story about "a man.. Regarded as a security risk.. If associated with Communists". Additionally, "it
seems to us... Myself.. That this is a subject that should be argued about endlessly", Clooney has

Edward R. Murrow: A Short Story
As I sat in my apartment and waited for my guest I opened up my laptop to skim my notes. Edward

To complete the service–learning component of this course, I assisted Dr. Finley in conducting
research used to create an encyclopedia of documentary films on the subject of crime or the criminal
justice system. Documentary filmmaking is one of the oldest forms of motion picture. In 1919, when
motion pictures were in their infancy, a Russian filmmaker by the name of Dziga Vertov criticized
the Soviet film industry for creating the same fiction found in theaters and in literature instead of
documenting real life events. He likened film dramas to religion in that they are the "opium of the
masses". It was not until 1922 that Robert Flaherty created the first true documentary. Nanook of the

a subjective tone, and using an indigenous person as the film's hero. (UC Berkeley Media Resources

Television And Its Impact On The World War II
In 1926 John Logie Baird transmitted his first image with his new mechanical television. As the
4"x2" image of his business partner illuminated his face, Baird was completely unaware of the
influence this new medium would have on the opinions and attitudes of the people of the world.
Television represented a new opportunity to bring not only audio like radio but to place an image in
every home. Along with the work of many other inventors television was soon to become a viable
medium of entertainment and news but it did face many setbacks. At first television was a novelty,
completely overshadowed by the established medium of radio. Before World War II very few homes
contained a television and broadcasters mostly aired 15 minute segments and were limited in
technology. Then on September 1, 1939 Hitler and Germany invaded Poland and the world plunged
into World War II. The FCC issued a ban on the construction of television equipment causing the
growth of television to stagnate. At the end of the war economic prosperity and a rising middle class
opened the door for a new rise in the purchase of goods. One such good was the television. In 1947
only a few thousand homes owned a television. By 1950 six million homes contained a television,
and in 1960 around 60 million homes contained a television. During this period a new war was
being waged: the Cold War. In this battle between United States and the Soviet Union ideals

The Golden Age Of Tv And Now

Legacy of Television American Television and American Society: The Golden Age of TV and Now
Preface:
"TV has become a significant part of American life, with 98% percent of Americans homes having
at least one set and with the average set turned on six hours each day" John E. O'Connor (xiv).
Within 15 years of production, about 83 million American homes had at least one television set. TV
is such an essential part of our everyday lives, that it would be hard to imagine life without it.
Television is an influential medium that produces many pop–culture figures, and trends. The
development, iconic people, and legendary programs all have made television's legacy
extraordinary, and quintessential part of American culture.
Development:
The first television set was invented by Philo Farnsworth, on September 7th, 1927. Surprisingly, he
lived without electricity until the age of 14, and was only 21 at the time of the invention. Soon
enough the largest radio company at the time, RCA, invested $50 million into the development of
the television. David Sarnoff the company's, at the time president hired scientists to work off of
Philo Farnsworth's patents. According to New York University media professor, Mitchell Stephens,
by 1939, personal home television sets were on the market, being sold by RCA, and by 1955 about

Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism...
Bob Edwards' Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a short biography about the
man that established and revolutionized broadcast journalism. Bob Edwards has ample experience in
broadcast journalism as a radio news and talk show host for over 30 years (Biography.com). It is no
surprise that Edwards takes a particular interest in writing about Edward Murrow since he certainly
influenced Edwards' career in radio news. While he conducted most of his research through
secondary sources, he relied heavily on books by close co–workers of Murrow. With that said,
Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a great streamlined tale of Murrow's
journey from a logger, to an education advocate, to broadcast journalism. As ... Show more content

He is portrayed as just another broadcaster throughout the early coverage of European affairs and
does not stand out as a star until his broadcasts from London. He did essentially shape the way news
programs report and the simple inclusion of much of his early career proves this easily. The book is
most likely geared towards history and media enthusiasts. It is great for its intended audience, but
lacks exposition of much else other than his education and media careers. Edwards says that because
"With the focus strictly on Ed Murrow's innovations in radio and TV, large chunks of his life had to
be omitted" (9). As such, there is a lot of information missing for somebody that is extremely
interested in Murrow's life outside of work. This does help to maintain a concise summary of his life
in the industry without diluting the book with trivial facts about his life. For this reason, I think the
appeal of this book is much more widespread than just history or media buffs since it is a quick but
extremely informative read. His organization and style makes the book pretty easy to follow. The
only issues with readability are in the chapters during and following the World War II coverage
where he jumps from Murrow to a brief history of other "Murrow Boys" where he will fast forward
in the personality's life and then digress back to Murrow from chapter 3 to 6. While the information

Mr. Douglas Murrow Case Paper
Mr. Douglas Murrow Based on the information presented in the case of 39 year–old Douglas
Murrow, he has been charged with criminal infractions consisting of breaking and entering his
parent's home in the middle of the night, as well as physically assaulting them. Murrow constantly
theorizes about a conspiracy plot against him and has consistently displayed episodes of paranoid,
delusional behavior. Murrow's erratic behavior is marked by the belief that "his parents" are
"conspiring with his doctor" to force him to take psychopharmaceuticals. The delusional ideation is
amplified by Murrow's insistence that his parents are entering into "his apartment at night" to torture
"him" while he is asleep (Laureate Education, Inc., 2017). Rationalizing the Competency Evaluation

Murrow's eccentric fantasies persistently clouds his grasp of reality; creating a substantial hindrance
in the progress of the case and competency to decipher the difference between right and wrong.
Murrow's irrational actions and delusional ideation places him in a position of danger to others, as
well as himself, especially if the case results in a prison sentence. As such, the competency
assessment should successfully yield a diagnosis for Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD) since
Murrow meets all seven of the diagnostic criteria. Utilizing the Interdisciplinary Fitness Interview
(IFI), Murrow's delusions (e.g. tainted milk and juice and episodes of torture by the hands of his
parents) are likely to surface well after the assessment is complete. The revised Fitness Interview

Republican Wisconsin Senator, Joseph R. Mccarthy Essay
Republican Wisconsin senator, Joseph R. McCarthy, was originally a quiet senator who was fairly
unknown and had done nothing extraordinary previous to 1950. The senator changed all that when
he delivered a speech in February 1950, in which he leveled allegations that the State Department
employed numerous Communists. He claimed to possess a list of these Communist employees,
although that list was never produced (Tindall, George Brown, and David Emory Shi). Senator
McCarthy's attempt to gain publicity with his outlandish accusations worked. Since the first Red
Scare years before the fifties, many Americans continued to be terrified of Communists and their
potential ability to corrupt and overrun America. Senator McCarthy played on these fears, and he
continued to claim communism had infiltrated every aspect of America; politics, culture and all of
American society. Because of the similarity of events from the first Red Scare, this time period of
the early fifties in America is often called the second Red Scare. The second Red Scare in America's
history actually began in the late forties, previous to McCarthy's emergence in 1950, and it
continued on throughout the fifties lasting at least a dozen years (Storrs, Landon R. Y.) McCarthy's
short era during the second Red Scare actually lasted only four years, but because of his outspoken
and arrogant persona, as well as his ability to inflict fear and persecution on innocent people, this
entire span of time went down in the

Good Night And Good Luck Film Analysis
"Good Night, and Good Luck", directed by George Clooney and starring David Strathaim, Patricia
Clarkson, and Robert Downey Jr., accounts the pivotal conflict between broadcast journalist Edward
R. Murrow and Senator Joe McCarthy, which directly led to McCarthy's political downfall. It was
waged primarily through See It Now, the documentary series Murrow famously hosted on CBS from
1951 to 1955.
The film begins with the sparsely covered case of Milo Radulavich, a man who was discharged from
the US Air Force on account of being deemed a security threat because of allegedly Communist
family members. Radulavich's story comes to Murrow's attention, and he sends one of his reporters
to interview Radulavich on camera, where he states that he was given ... Show more content on

Every controversial show–those about McCarthy in particular–placed everyone's reputations and
careers in jeopardy.
Murrow was more than willing to take the risks involved in order to inform the public of the
deceptive nature of McCarthy's methods, and it is not outright stated, but conveyed through
Strathaim's acting choices and characterization, that Murrow saw it as his duty to the American
people.
I remember, upon first viewing, being stunned at the high paced energy of every scene which took
place in the newsroom. Just like journalism itself, there were no sluggish moments in the film that
dragged on. "Good Night, and Good Luck" gave me another layer of knowledge about the inner
workings of newsrooms, short of being present within one. It also highlighted the importance of

Examples Of Integrity In Goodnight And Goodluck
After watching the movie "Goodnight and Goodluck" directed by George Clooney I think the most
important aspect for present day communicators to carry into their work is integrity. I think integrity
is important because it is a value that shows your character and personality. During the movie
Murrow developed his character by consistently being honest with others and himself. Edward
Murrow shows integrity quite often. For example, when McCathy starts making false accusations,
Murrow stands up in front of the camera and defends himself by stating facts to prove his innocence.
McCarthy claimed that Murrow had ties to communism saying that he was on the soviet pay role in
1932 and that he is a card carrying member for the international industrial

Good Night And Good Luck Film Analysis Essay
Good Night, and Good Luck instead used visual techniques to convey particular messages, the most
apparent being that the whole film was shot in high contrast black–and–white spliced with
occasional real footage of McCarthy. This blend creates the impression that the film was made in the
1950s while taking Clooney's audience there, watching the conflict as it occurs, as if the broadcasts
were live. Combining historic footage of McCarthy with black–and–white imagery further conveys
the film as more realistic and era–appropriate. Not only for historically accurate purposes, the
employment of a black–and–white filter paints the film as 'black and white', illustrating McCarthy as
'black' as he is doing wrong and falsely accusing the innocent of being communists, and Murrow as
'white' as he is doing right and standing up to McCarthy. Whilst black–and–white film is typically
seen as boring and dull, it proves to make the film's story stand out to the viewer so that by
removing the distraction of vibrant colour, the viewer can focus on character's actions and dialogue
and the conflict between Murrow and McCarthy.
Camera techniques also support the theme of McCarthyism in Good Night, and Good Luck by
showcasing actors in tight situations through expressive camera angles and shots. During Murrow's
several broadcasts, he is shot from multiple unconventional angles and distances, though mostly
close–ups zooming toward his face until he is nearly swallowed by the frame. These shots

Corruption Of Power In The Crucible
Life teaches one very valuable lesson: with power comes the abuse of power, which results in
hysteria and fear. Fear comes in many forms; fear for loved ones, fear for health, fear of losing
reputation and fear of reprisal. Throughout history, a powerful few have abused their power. An
example of this dilemma occurred in the 1950's when Senator Joseph McCarthy started accusing
innocent people of being communist sympathizers. Contemporary author, Arthur Miller, visited this
concept of corrupt power and disapproval of McCarthyism in his classic, The Crucible. Good Night
and Good Luck, a movie which was about the hysteria McCarthy caused to innocent lives, and The
Crucible have one major thing in common: the corruption of power. This thematic idea reveals that
the corruption of power can not only affect and impair mainstream society, but also the people
which live within it. To have corrupt power, power must be gained. People often gain this power by
manipulating others. Corrupt power is not used to benefit society, but rather for personal game and
gain. Senator Joseph McCarthy and Abigail Williams obtain many of the same qualities to gain this
power. McCarthy accused many innocent people for something they did not have a part in, while
Abigail did the same by accusing people of witchcraft. When Abigail is being questioned about her
accusations being true, she furiously replies by saying " I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; I have seen
my blood runnin' out! I have been near

Similarities Between Good Night And Good Luck
I think that the issues presented in the movie Good Night and Good Luck are important to the
history of television because Ed Murrow had the courage to step up and challenge senator of
Wisconsin Joseph McCarthy about many of the issues that were going on in the early 1950. Murrow
was brave enough to report that people rights were being violated by not providing enough evidence
and judging them. For example the lady that was in court for supposable ties with communism and
was fired from her job without further investigation. In addition, he also reported about the air force
officer that was dismissed from the air force just because his dad had ties with communist. This
officer didn't even had the opportunity to have a fair trial he was found guilty without any evidence.

They were harassed or threaten to lose their sponsorship to their programming if they didn't follow
directions. However Murrow's honesty and courage was stronger than the harassment made about
him losing his job if he continued to report on controversial issues. Another thing that I also found
interesting how people didn't have the right to a fair hearing during that mandate of McCarthy. I just
think that it was very unfair to many people that were accused of having ties with communist or
being a communist because they would lose their job without further investigation. Furthermore, I
also found interesting how a Joe and Shirley couldn't work together because they married and it was
against policy rules. They had to hide their marriage from everyone to avoid being fired from their
job. I just found this very unfair because there was not conflict of interest since they both worked as
reporters and neither one had higher authority over the

Similarities Between Good Night And Good Luck
Why "Good night and Good luck" should be shown in school In a place where technology runs the
world, modern things are sometimes better than the old. A great example would be the movie
"Goodnight and Good luck" directed by the one, the only George Clooney. (Who I was unaware was
a director). A comparable plotted movie would be "The Crucible", written based off of the Red
Scare. Since "The Crucible" and "Good night and Good Luck" have similar plot lines, why can't
"Good Night and Good luck" have the same potential in schools as "The Crucible". It might be a
far–fetched idea but that's why I came up with different reasons as to why both "The Crucible" and
"Good night and Good Luck" should be shown or talked about in school. Language,

Good Night And Good Luck Film Analysis
Directed and co–written by George Clooney, Good Night and Good Luck is a 93 minute film
released in 2005. The film takes place in the 1950's America, specifically during the infancy of
newscast journalism. Overall, the movie portrays the clash between Senator Joseph McCarthy and
television anchor Edward R. Murrow based on historical context, and depicts Murrow and his
broadcasting team's earnestness to educate the public with facts despite criticisms. Clooney's
objective deeply rooted in his production is the journalists' definite obligation to notify the citizens
of the phenomenon of the world, disregarding its unpleasantness. Yet, he hints at the tensions and
pressures he and his team felt upon pursuing their objective. The sense of uneasiness and terror
prevalent throughout their struggles were brought across and further emphasized through color, real
footage, sound, and acting. The black and white color of the movie is considered exceptionally
peculiar for the time of release. But this color choice is applicable as long as the political
atmosphere and the time period are concerned. Given that the film took place during the McCarthy
era where accusations of treason or disruption without legitimate evidence were practiced, the
coloring contributes as a visual element to the general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Edward R. Murrow Analysis
"Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn't mean you are wiser than when it
reached only to the end of the bar" (Edward R. Murrow). This quote by Murrow perfectly explains
his criticism towards Senator McCarthy but it perfectly depicts himself. As the Cold War intensified
and people became fearful of communist spies within our government, people were unaware of what
was going on behind closed doors and didn't know if or when an attack would happen. This was a
perfect time for someone like lesser known Senator Joseph McCarthy to make a name for himself
and for someone like Edward R. Murrow journalist for CBS to become a hero and make a legacy for
himself. Both did so but both also got some backlash along the way. Both ... Show more content on

Some defended McCarthy because some people he accused were actually communist, although most
people on his list were innocent (Appleby, et al. 550). Many people listened to what McCarthy had
to say in the beginning of his communist hunt, he attracted a great deal of publicity, " ...drew the
attention of the press, which put him in the headlines and quoted him widely" (Appleby, et al. 550).
In the beginning of McCarthy's reign he got people's attention, by assuring people he was going to
keep America safe, and he was going to find all communist and eliminate them (Appleby, et al.

bluff, and saving many people and their careers. In the movie, "Good Night, and Good Luck" it
says, people have never been prouder of him after his show, it then says that the New York Times
wrote a whole section on how great his piece was (Clooney & Heslov). Murrow's piece not only
called out McCarthy it saved many jobs, one being a marine who McCarthy accused of having

was no threat" (Clooney & Heslov). Not only did he get the marines to dismiss the accusations of a

(Clooney & Heslov). This lead to Senator McCarthy getting censored and various amounts of people

The Importance Of Edward Murrow In Good Night And Good Luck
Throughout his journalism career, Edward Murrow fought for what was right, not for what was easy.
The movie, Good Night and Good Luck, shows how he made the controversial decision to challenge
Joseph McCarthy in his news reports. McCarthy was a Wisconsin senator who played on the
American's fear of Communism, and he unjustly accused people of associating with Communism
without proper evidence. Since McCarthy had the power of persuasion and people were so scared of
Communism, he became a powerful figure. Murrow was not intimidated by the senator, and he
thought it was vital to report on McCarthy's actions in order to stop the madness. Overall, Murrow

Before the 1950s, reporters typically accepted what the government said, and they avoided reporting
disturbing information. In Good Night and Good Luck, Murrow recognized that Americans "are
currently wealthy, fat, comfortable, and complacent. We have currently a built–in allergy to
unpleasant or disturbing information; our mass media reflect this." The loss of his sponsor and
television time slot shows that Murrow's reports on McCarthy were controversial and disliked by
some. Even so, Murrow did not quit his investigation of McCarthy's actions and accusations. In the
film, Murrow also realized that Americans needed to "recognize that television, in the main, is being
used to distract, delude, amuse, and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who
look at it, and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture, too late." He understood that
the news in the 1950s was treating Americans like innocent children, but he recognized that this
mentality needed to change. He recognized the importance of hard–hitting, factual, and sometimes
controversial news since the media and news helped to inform citizens. American citizens needed to
know the truth in order to improve society and to avoid catastrophes before it is too late. He
believed that McCarthy was jeopardizing Americans' constitutional rights, and U.S. citizens should
have the right to stop injustices and create change in the government if necessary. Therefore,
Murrow was an innovative reporter who risked his reputation in order to bring truth and justice to
the American people, and he recognized the importance of properly educating American

Edward R. Murrow's See It Now
Television has drastically changed over time in terms of its content, reach, and accuracy. In 1954,
journalist Edward R. Murrow and his television series See it Now were dedicated to revealing the
truth to their audience no matter how unpleasant the news. Murrow had been specifically interested
in revealing the truth about Senator Joseph McCarthy, who had carried out investigations against
government workers and those of public institutions who were believed to have ties to communism.

There is a wider variety of channels in terms of quantity and quality. People have the option to seek
news from multiple sources in order to validate it and formulate their opinions on issues. Because of
this, television does not have as much influence today as it had in the 1950s. With the development
of other forms of media such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, people generally retrieve their
news from websites and applications on these devices of which there are plenty. Therefore, if
coverage of a McCarthy type politician were produced today, it would not be as much of a burden
on each journalist because the stakes would not be as high, as there are other outlets providing
similar content. However, many of today's news channels have deviated away from the principles of
journalism, which emphasize reporting the truth and not repressing any information. In the media
and television today, there is a large emphasis on advertising and image. Many companies select
news to report based on what would help to improve their reputation and generate more profit by
catering to advertisers. If the McCarthy controversy were to happen today, news channels would
report on it, but in a way that would not jeopardize themselves. It is also likely that they would skew
the news to cater to the views of their audience and advertisers. Thus, reporters would also most
likely not make statements as bold as Murrow as they would fear McCarthy potentially destroying

It also refers to the period this novel this was set
in, the 50's, 60's where McCarthyism was dominant. Furthermore, it has great symbolic value,
representing issues such as the American struggle of freedom and conformity. This essay shall

Also, any person who unpatriotically supported communism was harshly dealt with. These events
were represented in an exact scale model of the Mental Institution. Anyone who dared to cause an
uproar was humiliated in group therapy sessions, or given Electroshock Therapy, or in extreme cases
such as McMurphy, lobotomy.

Good Night And Good Luck Movie Analysis
Good Night and Good Luck was written and Directed by George Clooney. George took time and
effort into making this film close enough to the historical information that we have today about
McCarthy. Today's history books we will learn that McCarthy was a senator from Wisconsin, and he
gathered over the permanent subcommittee on the investigations. That hosted public hearings that
McCarthy accused many army officials, media members, and other public figures for being
Communists. In the film, Good Night and Good Luck, director George Clooney played out each
event through this movie. However, the film includes differences in point of view in order to into the
excitement of the film. There are two similarities between the movie Goodnight and Good Luck, and
the history that it is based on. One similar part in the movie and in history is that they both give us a
better way of understanding how McCarthy took control. Tobias Hochscherf and Christoph Laucht
said, " McCarthy era and its subliminal resonances to the ongoing "War on Terror," (Time Out,
London Issue, 15–22 February 2006). Tobias Hochscherf and Christoph Laucht said,"While the film
was celebrated mostly by representatives of the liberal camp in the United States and especially in
Europe, it was also subject to severe criticism for its allegedly narrow view, historical inaccuracies,
and suggestiveness by others," (See, for instance, Time Out, London Issue, 15–22 February 2006). [

Due to this specific part of freedom, people were not supposed to be treated any differently by the
government for their political belief, but senator Joseph McCarthy did not respect the individual
liberty which was given to each person. McCarthy decided that since he had more power being
senator of Wisconsin, it meant he had the power to take away the liberty of a man and divert a man's
beliefs by disrespecting and treating them differently due to their political stance.
One of the examples of Senator McCarthy taking advantage of his governmental power over
communist citizens would be, the act which Joseph McCarthy took against Milo Radanovich. Milo
Radulovich was a man who was a lieutenant within the United States air force. Milo was a man with
a communist stance and belief, but Senator McCarthy discharged Milo from the air force. The
senator used the excuse stating that because of Milo being a communist within the United States Air
Force, Milo was a security risk to the government and could no longer serve in the Air Force. Joseph
McCarthy stated that Milo was a security threat to the government, but McCarthy did not have any

The Red Scare Of McCarthyism

  • 1. The Red Scare of McCarthyism Red Scare: McCarthyism "No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." –Edward R. Murrow (Goodreads.com) The Red Scare, also known as, McCarthyism started in the early 1950's. It got the name McCarthyism from Senator Joseph Raymond McCarthy. McCarthy started The Red Scare. It was very similar to a witch hunt but, it wasn't witches they were hunting for. They were searching for communist. The Red Scare was a horrible and cruel period during the early 1900's. During the Cold War communist began to emerge. Communist are people who follow or believe in communism. They were such a small group that no one paid much attention to them until after World War 2. When WW II ended communist started causing problems. They already took power in other countries and Americans began to fear they would do the same to the U.S. They wondered if Soviet Spies were in America secretly advertising communism. U.S. citizens even questioned if communist were involved in U.S. government jobs or in schools miseducating students and children. To help calm down these fears Joseph Raymond McCarthy started McCarthyism. (Shmoop.com) McCarthyism was the going away or getting rid of communist in the U.S. McCarthy began to gain followers who also wanted to get rid of these undercover people. (World Book 332–333) The Government searched federal employees and asked questions like the type of books and magazines they read, organizations they were part of, and if they ... • 5. The Social Impact Of Edward Murrow There have been many issues with journalists being honest or dishonest in our generation. Not all of journalist are bad, there are many great ones who have impacted society in positive ways. Journalism is the activity or profession of writing for magazines, newspapers, news websites, or they prepare news stories to be broadcasted to the public (Journalism.org). Edward Murrow said, "To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; credible we must be truthful." This holds true because the world does not want to hear false stories, they want to hear credible ones, Edward Murrow shows that by his truthfulness and his dedication to journalism. Murrow has impacted society in positive ways including his accuracy, political knowledge, and his social impact. Edward Murrow was born on April 25th, 1908, in Polecat Creek, North Carolina. When he was only six years old, his family moved across the country to Western Washington which was only thirty miles from the Canadian border. In nearby Edison, he attended high school and was president of the student body his senior year. He also succeeded exceptionally on the debate team in high school and was further a member of the basketball team which won the county championship. After he graduated from high school, Murrow studied political science, speech, and international relations at Washington State University. In college he was very active in college politics which would help him for his future. He started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Good Morning Vietnam: History Vs. Hollywood Good Morning Vietnam: History v. Hollywood In the 1987 film, Good Morning Vietnam, Robin Williams portrays real Armed Forces Radio DJ, Adrian Cronauer. While this film is meant to be more of a light–hearted take on the Vietnam War and was not written to be historically accurate, it is still loosely based on the experiences of Cronauer. This film is not very accurate to the events of Adrian Cronauer's life, however, it gives us an accurate look into what was going on in during the Vietnam War in 1965. Good Morning Vietnam is set in 1965 in Saigon, Vietnam. Disc Jockey Adrian Cronauer is sent to Saigon from Crete, Greece to be the new Armed Forces Radio DJ. In the beginning of the film Cronauer is met by Private Edward Montesquieu Garlick ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an interview with Adrian Cronauer with USA Today in August 2014, Cronauer states, "It is the first film that began to show Americans in Vietnam as they really were instead of a bunch of murderers, and rapists, and baby killers, and dope addicts, and psychotics." (Shogol) It was not the film maker's intentions to change the way Americans viewed the war, and for the most part it did not, but it did intend to give the viewers insight on what it was like there. According to Time magazine's film reviewer, Richard Schickel, "You may be all the way home before you realize you may have not seen just the comedy (and comic performance) of the year, but just possibly the most insinuatingly truthful movie yet about ... • 13. Murk Evaluating Sources Part One: Evaluation of Sources This investigation is based on a combination of primary and secondary sources. The most valuable primary source is from "See It Now," a series broadcasted by CBS, produced by Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly, and hosted by Murrow. The show ran from 1951–1958 and is regarded as a turning point in news broadcasting. The program had a reputation of being an honest and thoughtful presentation of current events. The episode titled "A Report on Senator Joseph R. McCarthy" aired on March 9th, 1954. Murrow discussed the communist hunt launched by McCarthy and extensively used excerpts McCarthy's speeches. The source used is a video recording of the actual episode aired in 1954. There is no paraphrasing or interpretation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an issue that historians face daily. "To what extent" is largely a matter of opinion based on the given facts. After gathering data and sources, I was able to intuitively determine the extent to which Murrow's broadcast affected McCarthy's political career. Throughout this investigation, many types of sources were used. Primary source recordings to books written by historians alike point to the same conclusion: Murrow's famous broadcast planted seeds of dissent in public opinion and marked the beginning of the end for McCarthy's political career. Every source used for this investigation supports this conclusion, which indicates that further research should be done. This investigation is lacking in sources demonstrating that Murrow was unimportant in McCarthy's political career. In this way, this investigation is biased in support of Murrow. Even if this investigation had more sources supporting the opposite perspective, a slight bias would still be present. One of the greatest challenges of history is maintaining ... • 17. Good Night And Good Luck Analysis Legendary CBS News broadcaster Edward R. Murrow is a journalist who made history with exposing Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Although the story will go down in history, with the help of the movie Good Night, and Good Luck directed by George Clooney, how much is known of the historically accurate story. While some could argue that George Clooney and producer, Grant Heslov, made the screenplay naive, others disagree. Many may even state that it was well researched and followed the original weekly CBS story, See It Now, accurately. Both are easily arguable. In the movie, Good Night, and Good Luck, it is portrayed that many people or news companies were too afraid of McCarthy to stand up to him. Although by the time the show, See It Now, aired on the 9th of March, 1954, many people wanted to remove McCarthy from chairman. Many Republicans joined Democrats in publicly denouncing him, including Richard Nixon. Many would state that mainstream news was also very anti–McCarthy, including Time Magazine and Chicago Tribune. Another red flag that may make people question the accurateness of this film is the changing in minor details, including the beginning of this movie when the date of the RTDNA Convention in Chicago is displayed on October 25th , 1985 when the Convention was held on October 12th, 1958 . Also, Murrow's keynote address is introduced by a man who talks about the issues that Murrow reported on . This includes exploitation of migrant workers, while this is true, Murrow ... Murrow, prominent figure in journalism, portrayed the world of news reporting through lenses that could only see raw honesty and concision. In the film directed by George Clooney, 'Good Night and Good Luck', David Strathaim played as Edward R. Murrow during the downfall of Joseph McCarthy. This very period of Murrow's life was near his resignation to live broadcasting at CBS, and most of the events that happened in between were the cause of his leave. • 33. Edward R. Murrow Analysis 1. Why did the public acclaim for Edward R. Murrow's World War II radio broadcasts help his controversial "Radulovich" and "McCarthy" TV programs, and How were the economic vulnerabilities of commercial TV exploited by President Lyndon B. Johnson in order to create a surprise news event that interfered with Fred Friendly's live coverage of the 1966 U.S. Senate Hearings on Vietnam? Edward R. Murrow is a universally recognized, courageous news broadcaster who brought stories to life through radio and television programs. He developed the term "broadcast journalism," earning creditability with his eyewitness coverage of the London bombing which gave him the public acclaim "As Kendrick noted, he was recognized as "a proficient debater, and preferred the spoken word, never having been a writing journalist" (Kendrick, p.214). Murrow worked for CBS as an American radio news correspondent covering World War II. He experienced first hand the Blitz on London, the bombing of the city by the Germans on September 7, 1940. Murrow's reporting style, established in both radio and television, has had a profound and lasting effect on broadcast journalism and the newscast format. In addition to developments like the news round–up, one major innovation of Murrow's continues to play a crucial role in news reporting, particularly of the 2016 election, and that is the compilation and employment of previous media products, such as radio and television recordings, and news publications, in order to conceptualize, analyze, and lampoon a contemporary political figure, as exemplified by Murrow's report on Joseph McCarthy. • 41. Arthur Miller's Good Night, And Good Luck A term coined in the 1950s, McCarthyism is the general act of making accusations of treason or subversion without proper regard for evidence. Both Arthur Miller's The Crucible and George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck explore the theme of McCarthyism through numerous ways using conventions of their text types: respectively a play and a film. Each through characterisation and symbolism, as well as individually through the plays title and narrative style, and the films editing, camera techniques and sound track, the texts delve into the subject constructively through their own unique methods. Arthur Miller's 1953 play The Crucible is a historical fiction set during the 1692, Salem Witch Trials, a period of mass hysteria where a single ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character of the film is Edward R. Murrow, the elegant and severe face of CBS News See it Now. Costumed in sharp suits and stylish patterned ties with glossy slicked back hair, the noir filter exhibits him as an imposing ostentatious figure, flamboyantly smoking a cigarette between his fixed positioned fingers. His voice is a perfect imitation of the real Murrow's hardened scowl with dry drone–like delivery, expelling gravitas, courage and confidence as he devotes himself to report the truth in the face of McCarthy's corruption. This nostalgic view of Murrow steals the attention of viewers from his era, especially when reciting his famous monologues on air revealing McCarthy for what he is doing. McCarthy however, is only displayed through existing historic footage of him. This is accompanied by his gravelly and rather grating, monotonous voice, of which becomes repetitive and intrusive as the news team periodically look through footage of his speeches to use against him. This contrast of characterisation between Murrow and McCarthy clearly shows that they are respectively good and evil counterparts of one another. Similarly, Characterisation in The Crucible ... Egbert Roscoe Murrow was born on April 25th, 1908 on a small farm in Polecat Creek, North Carolina, which is located near Greensboro, North Carolina. His family moved to a small town near the Canadian border in Washington State when he was six years old. When he was in high school, he changed his name to the now iconic Edward R. Murrow. (Bernstein 40) I found that Mr. Murrow had three utmost important topics that were very endearing and focused mostly on them with total honesty, and those were in relation to Senators, Communism and Nazis. (Wesherba 15) He pioneered live international radio broadcasts during the early days of World War II. His work set the standards for fair minded reporting. Towards the end of his career, his efforts even brought about the downfall of one of America's most notorious Senators. Joseph R. McCarthy, the Republican Senator of Wisconsin, began a campaign quest against communistic influence. Most people witnessed it as a diligent search for renegades by an enthusiastic loyalist, and then others perceived it to be a federalist opportunity, by victimizing situations in order to gain political impact by browbeating the public. The circumstances surrounding McCarthy, was overwhelmed with feelings and emotions since television gave very little detail and was treated with kid gloves. Edward Murrow broke the realism about McCarthy on the evening of March 9, 1954, by sharing video footage that shown that the Senator was up to no good, and was abusing his political power to do so. Murrow and co–editor Fred Friendly gave controversial information on the man and his shenanigans. • 57. Essay on Divergent Viewpoints The nature of conflicting perspectives is to explore differing values and ideas, through the representation of the events, people and situations, which in some way impact on the composer and the reader. Composers often manipulate their representations for their own purpose and these conflicting perspectives exist because of the eternal subjectivity of composers. Hughes' 20th century confessional poems, "Fulbright Scholars" and "Your Paris" offers a perspective on his tempestuous relationship with Plath, persuading the reader that he was the victim suffocating under Plath's mental instability. Similarly, George Clooney's (2005) American dramatic film, "Good Night and Good Luck", in conjunction with Hughes poetry demonstrates how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of ironic imagery discharges an emotive, personal tone which in turn persuades the reader to empathise with Hughes as he was "dumbfounded afresh" by Plath. Consequently, individuals can be selective in their choices when representing a person, event or situation and omit key elements, controlling the response of the responder. Similar to how Hughes' anthology, "Birthday Letters", expressed through inherent subjectivity, George Clooney's 1950's era, Good Night and Good Luck, echoes this as he represents this idea through the media. Through filmic devices, Clooney explores the tension between the perspectives of reporters at CBS and Senator Joseph McCarthy in viewing McCarthy's actions as he, "takes charge... of Communist infiltration". Just as Hughes' relationship with Plath raised questions from public opinion, but he dismisses their viewpoints through his emotional poetry. Clooney uses Edward R. Murrow to expose Senator McCarthy as a fear monger of communism in his television segment, "See it Now", as he presents his story from a low angle shot. This presents Murrow in a powerful position as he uses the media to announce his perspective on McCarthy to the citizens of America. As he addresses the story about "a man.. Regarded as a security risk.. If associated with Communists". Additionally, "it seems to us... Myself.. That this is a subject that should be argued about endlessly", Clooney has ... This man survived London during World War II and now he's coming over to my house for an interview. So many thoughts circled my head while I waited. What questions will I ask? How will he answer? Will I be able to use this interview at all? I kept frantically flipping through my notes when I heard a knock at the door. I looked through my window and saw an older man waiting outside. He stood there in an old gray suit and red tie. It was him all right, I knocked on the window to get his attention and signaled him to come inside. Edward looked at me with his cigarette hanging from his mouth. "I wouldn't call it a philosophy, but yes that's what I always tried to do." He puffed some smoke. Murrow Sociology To complete the service–learning component of this course, I assisted Dr. Finley in conducting research used to create an encyclopedia of documentary films on the subject of crime or the criminal justice system. Documentary filmmaking is one of the oldest forms of motion picture. In 1919, when motion pictures were in their infancy, a Russian filmmaker by the name of Dziga Vertov criticized the Soviet film industry for creating the same fiction found in theaters and in literature instead of documenting real life events. He likened film dramas to religion in that they are the "opium of the masses". It was not until 1922 that Robert Flaherty created the first true documentary. Nanook of the North was the first full–length film to use modern techniques, such as third person narration, taking a subjective tone, and using an indigenous person as the film's hero. As the 4"x2" image of his business partner illuminated his face, Baird was completely unaware of the influence this new medium would have on the opinions and attitudes of the people of the world. Television represented a new opportunity to bring not only audio like radio but to place an image in every home. Along with the work of many other inventors television was soon to become a viable medium of entertainment and news but it did face many setbacks. At first television was a novelty, completely overshadowed by the established medium of radio. Before World War II very few homes contained a television and broadcasters mostly aired 15 minute segments and were limited in technology. Then on September 1, 1939 Hitler and Germany invaded Poland and the world plunged into World War II. The FCC issued a ban on the construction of television equipment causing the growth of television to stagnate. At the end of the war economic prosperity and a rising middle class opened the door for a new rise in the purchase of goods. One such good was the television. In 1947 only a few thousand homes owned a television. By 1950 six million homes contained a television, and in 1960 around 60 million homes contained a television. During this period a new war was being waged: the Cold War. In this battle between United States and the Soviet Union ideals propaganda was the main way to grow support for their cause ... The Golden Age Of Tv And Now Rabiah Borhan Mr. Battaglia Legacy of Television American Television and American Society: The Golden Age of TV and Now Preface: "TV has become a significant part of American life, with 98% percent of Americans homes having at least one set and with the average set turned on six hours each day" John E. O'Connor (xiv). Within 15 years of production, about 83 million American homes had at least one television set. TV is such an essential part of our everyday lives, that it would be hard to imagine life without it. Television is an influential medium that produces many pop–culture figures, and trends. The development, iconic people, and legendary programs all have made television's legacy extraordinary, and quintessential part of American culture. Development: The first television set was invented by Philo Farnsworth, on September 7th, 1927. Surprisingly, he lived without electricity until the age of 14, and was only 21 at the time of the invention. Soon enough the largest radio company at the time, RCA, invested $50 million into the development of the television. David Sarnoff the company's, at the time president hired scientists to work off of Philo Farnsworth's patents. According to New York University media professor, Mitchell Stephens, by 1939, personal home television sets were on the market, being sold by RCA, and by 1955 about half of US homes had at least one. Bob Edwards' Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a short biography about the man that established and revolutionized broadcast journalism. Bob Edwards has ample experience in broadcast journalism as a radio news and talk show host for over 30 years (Biography.com). It is no surprise that Edwards takes a particular interest in writing about Edward Murrow since he certainly influenced Edwards' career in radio news. While he conducted most of his research through secondary sources, he relied heavily on books by close co–workers of Murrow. With that said, Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a great streamlined tale of Murrow's journey from a logger, to an education advocate, to broadcast journalism. As ... He is portrayed as just another broadcaster throughout the early coverage of European affairs and does not stand out as a star until his broadcasts from London. He did essentially shape the way news programs report and the simple inclusion of much of his early career proves this easily. The book is most likely geared towards history and media enthusiasts. It is great for its intended audience, but lacks exposition of much else other than his education and media careers. Edwards says that because "With the focus strictly on Ed Murrow's innovations in radio and TV, large chunks of his life had to be omitted" (9). As such, there is a lot of information missing for somebody that is extremely interested in Murrow's life outside of work. This does help to maintain a concise summary of his life in the industry without diluting the book with trivial facts about his life. For this reason, I think the appeal of this book is much more widespread than just history or media buffs since it is a quick but extremely informative read. His organization and style makes the book pretty easy to follow. The only issues with readability are in the chapters during and following the World War II coverage where he jumps from Murrow to a brief history of other "Murrow Boys" where he will fast forward in the personality's life and then digress back to Murrow from chapter 3 to 6. • 93. Republican Wisconsin Senator, Joseph R. Mccarthy Essay Republican Wisconsin senator, Joseph R. McCarthy, was originally a quiet senator who was fairly unknown and had done nothing extraordinary previous to 1950. The senator changed all that when he delivered a speech in February 1950, in which he leveled allegations that the State Department employed numerous Communists. He claimed to possess a list of these Communist employees, although that list was never produced (Tindall, George Brown, and David Emory Shi). Senator McCarthy's attempt to gain publicity with his outlandish accusations worked. Since the first Red Scare years before the fifties, many Americans continued to be terrified of Communists and their potential ability to corrupt and overrun America. Senator McCarthy played on these fears, and he continued to claim communism had infiltrated every aspect of America; politics, culture and all of American society. Because of the similarity of events from the first Red Scare, this time period of the early fifties in America is often called the second Red Scare. The second Red Scare in America's history actually began in the late forties, previous to McCarthy's emergence in 1950, and it continued on throughout the fifties lasting at least a dozen years (Storrs, Landon R. Y.) McCarthy's short era during the second Red Scare actually lasted only four years, but because of his outspoken and arrogant persona, as well as his ability to inflict fear and persecution on innocent people, this entire span of time went down in the ... • 105. Good Night And Good Luck Film Analysis Essay Good Night, and Good Luck instead used visual techniques to convey particular messages, the most apparent being that the whole film was shot in high contrast black–and–white spliced with occasional real footage of McCarthy. This blend creates the impression that the film was made in the 1950s while taking Clooney's audience there, watching the conflict as it occurs, as if the broadcasts were live. Combining historic footage of McCarthy with black–and–white imagery further conveys the film as more realistic and era–appropriate. Not only for historically accurate purposes, the employment of a black–and–white filter paints the film as 'black and white', illustrating McCarthy as 'black' as he is doing wrong and falsely accusing the innocent of being communists, and Murrow as 'white' as he is doing right and standing up to McCarthy. Whilst black–and–white film is typically seen as boring and dull, it proves to make the film's story stand out to the viewer so that by removing the distraction of vibrant colour, the viewer can focus on character's actions and dialogue and the conflict between Murrow and McCarthy. Camera techniques also support the theme of McCarthyism in Good Night, and Good Luck by showcasing actors in tight situations through expressive camera angles and shots. During Murrow's several broadcasts, he is shot from multiple unconventional angles and distances, though mostly close–ups zooming toward his face until he is nearly swallowed by the frame. • 109. Corruption Of Power In The Crucible Life teaches one very valuable lesson: with power comes the abuse of power, which results in hysteria and fear. Fear comes in many forms; fear for loved ones, fear for health, fear of losing reputation and fear of reprisal. Throughout history, a powerful few have abused their power. An example of this dilemma occurred in the 1950's when Senator Joseph McCarthy started accusing innocent people of being communist sympathizers. Contemporary author, Arthur Miller, visited this concept of corrupt power and disapproval of McCarthyism in his classic, The Crucible. Good Night and Good Luck, a movie which was about the hysteria McCarthy caused to innocent lives, and The Crucible have one major thing in common: the corruption of power. This thematic idea reveals that the corruption of power can not only affect and impair mainstream society, but also the people which live within it. To have corrupt power, power must be gained. People often gain this power by manipulating others. Corrupt power is not used to benefit society, but rather for personal game and gain. Senator Joseph McCarthy and Abigail Williams obtain many of the same qualities to gain this power. McCarthy accused many innocent people for something they did not have a part in, while Abigail did the same by accusing people of witchcraft. When Abigail is being questioned about her accusations being true, she furiously replies by saying " I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; I have seen my blood runnin' out! I have been near ... Murrow was brave enough to report that people rights were being violated by not providing enough evidence and judging them. • 121. Good Night And Good Luck Film Analysis Directed and co–written by George Clooney, Good Night and Good Luck is a 93 minute film released in 2005. The film takes place in the 1950's America, specifically during the infancy of newscast journalism. Overall, the movie portrays the clash between Senator Joseph McCarthy and television anchor Edward R. Murrow based on historical context, and depicts Murrow and his broadcasting team's earnestness to educate the public with facts despite criticisms. Clooney's objective deeply rooted in his production is the journalists' definite obligation to notify the citizens of the phenomenon of the world, disregarding its unpleasantness. Yet, he hints at the tensions and pressures he and his team felt upon pursuing their objective. The sense of uneasiness and terror prevalent throughout their struggles were brought across and further emphasized through color, real footage, sound, and acting. The black and white color of the movie is considered exceptionally peculiar for the time of release. But this color choice is applicable as long as the political atmosphere and the time period are concerned. • 133. The Importance Of Edward Murrow In Good Night And Good Luck Throughout his journalism career, Edward Murrow fought for what was right, not for what was easy. The movie, Good Night and Good Luck, shows how he made the controversial decision to challenge Joseph McCarthy in his news reports. McCarthy was a Wisconsin senator who played on the American's fear of Communism, and he unjustly accused people of associating with Communism without proper evidence. Since McCarthy had the power of persuasion and people were so scared of Communism, he became a powerful figure. Murrow was not intimidated by the senator, and he thought it was vital to report on McCarthy's actions in order to stop the madness. Before the 1950s, reporters typically accepted what the government said, and they avoided reporting disturbing information. In Good Night and Good Luck, Murrow recognized that Americans "are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable, and complacent. We have currently a built–in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information; our mass media reflect this." The loss of his sponsor and television time slot shows that Murrow's reports on McCarthy were controversial and disliked by some. Even so, Murrow did not quit his investigation of McCarthy's actions and accusations. In the film, Murrow also realized that Americans needed to "recognize that television, in the main, is being used to distract, delude, amuse, and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it, and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture, too late." He understood that the news in the 1950s was treating Americans like innocent children, but he recognized that this mentality needed to change. He recognized the importance of hard–hitting, factual, and sometimes controversial news since the media and news helped to inform citizens. American citizens needed to know the truth in order to improve society and to avoid catastrophes before it is too late. He believed that McCarthy was jeopardizing Americans' constitutional rights, and U.S. citizens should have the right to stop injustices and create change in the government if necessary. Therefore, Murrow was an innovative reporter who risked his reputation in order to bring truth and justice to the American people, and he recognized the importance of properly educating American ... • 137. Edward R. Murrow's See It Now Television has drastically changed over time in terms of its content, reach, and accuracy. In 1954, journalist Edward R. Murrow and his television series See it Now were dedicated to revealing the truth to their audience no matter how unpleasant the news. Murrow had been specifically interested in revealing the truth about Senator Joseph McCarthy, who had carried out investigations against government workers and those of public institutions who were believed to have ties to communism. Murrow did not appear to feel obligated by McCarthy to only report positive things about him, despite the fact he was a public figure with a lot of power who could destroy his company and reputation. People have the option to seek news from multiple sources in order to validate it and formulate their opinions on issues. Because of this, television does not have as much influence today as it had in the 1950s. With the development of other forms of media such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, people generally retrieve their news from websites and applications on these devices of which there are plenty. Therefore, if coverage of a McCarthy type politician were produced today, it would not be as much of a burden on each journalist because the stakes would not be as high, as there are other outlets providing similar content. However, many of today's news channels have deviated away from the principles of journalism, which emphasize reporting the truth and not repressing any information. In the media and television today, there is a large emphasis on advertising and image. Many companies select news to report based on what would help to improve their reputation and generate more profit by catering to advertisers. If the McCarthy controversy were to happen today, news channels would report on it, but in a way that would not jeopardize themselves. It is also likely that they would skew the news to cater to the views of their audience and advertisers. Thus, reporters would also most likely not make statements as bold as Murrow as they would fear McCarthy potentially destroying their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also, any person who unpatriotically supported communism was harshly dealt with. These events were represented in an exact scale model of the Mental Institution. Anyone who dared to cause an uproar was humiliated in group therapy sessions, or given Electroshock Therapy, or in extreme cases such as McMurphy, lobotomy. In the hospital, McMurphy represented the rebel, the opposer to the Combine (McCarthyism), the one who wanted to break free of society's conformity. Setting is also important, as it refers to the period this book was set in, the 1950's. Ultimately, it is a reflection of what was happening in American society at the time, and what American society expected from each other. McCarthyism, as started by Senator Joseph McCarthy, was the most prevalent movement of the 1950's, where there was great momentum for anti–communism and the suppression of the Anti–communist party. Freedom of speech was suppressed, just like speech and actions were inside the hospital. Here, the Combine and Nurse Ratched act like the McCarthy "representatives", where the patients are seen as members of the public, having their every word and movement under close scrutiny. Kesey has also given this novel great Symbolic value. As an opposer to the McCarthy scheme, he has used the mental hospital as a scale model of how society breaks free of society's conformity. Due to this specific part of freedom, people were not supposed to be treated any differently by the government for their political belief, but senator Joseph McCarthy did not respect the individual liberty which was given to each person. McCarthy decided that since he had more power being senator of Wisconsin, it meant he had the power to take away the liberty of a man and divert a man's beliefs by disrespecting and treating them differently due to their political stance. One of the examples of Senator McCarthy taking advantage of his governmental power over communist citizens would be, the act which Joseph McCarthy took against Milo Radanovich. Milo Radulovich was a man who was a lieutenant within the United States air force. Milo was a man with a communist stance and belief, but Senator McCarthy discharged Milo from the air force. The senator used the excuse stating that because of Milo being a communist within the United States Air Force, Milo was a security risk to the government and could no longer serve in the Air Force. Joseph McCarthy stated that Milo was a security threat to the government, but McCarthy did not have any form of viable proof to show to support his accusation.
