1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.1 To create worksheets with basic and advanced features of Microsoft Excel.
1.2 Use data tools such as Excel pivots and charts to process data for visualisation
and presentation.
1.3 Create Excel worksheets with public datasets that are meaningful for the
chosen area of interest.
2 PROJECT SYNOPSIS
2.1 This is an INDIVIDUAL project which carries a weightage of 35% in your
overall marks.
2.2 Each student is required to select ONE of the SIX (6) topics listed below for this
Excel project. Think of an area of interest for the chosen topic(s) that you
want to research and create Excel worksheets. Possible areas of interests
are listed in brackets ().
• Infrastructure (e.g. HDB Flat prices, Private housing)
• Society (e.g. Birth Rate, Childcare Centre Capacity, Total Marriages,
Number of Singapore Residents)
• Transport (E.g. Taxi availability, Vehicle Population, Transport Ridership,
Air Transport)
• Economy (e.g. Job vacancy, Wholesale Trade, Retail, Hotels, Food
Services)
• Education (e.g. Enrolment, Graduate statistics)
• Health (e.g. Dengue cases, Hospital admissions)
2.3 For each selected theme, you can check the LMS videos on how to get
started with public datasets in Singstat.gov.sg and Data.gov.sg websites.
You can use MULTIPLE datasets and there is no limit to the number of
datasets used. REAL public datasets must be used in this project. You may
also choose OTHER AREA OF INTEREST datasets that may be linked to
your main theme.
2.4 Both Singstat.gov.sg and Data.gov.sg websites provide datasets via tables
and charts to preview the content of each dataset before you download.
2.5 If you wish to use additional datasets from other websites, you MUST
seek approval from your tutor as he/she will ensure the datasets are
valid andrelevant for this project.

3 SUBMISSION
3.1 PROJECT MILESTONE CHECK
a. Each student is required to upload the Excel workbook in LMS by Monday,
15 Nov2021, at 2359hrs.
b. Download the project proposal template and fill up the Excel worksheet tab
‐ “Introduction”.
c. The Excel workbook should contain the following:
Introduction
o Your name, admin number, tutorial class and tutor
o Project Background and Objectives
o List the names of all worksheets that you plan to create
o Narrative of Datasets
o Listing and purpose of all worksheets
Create at least ONE (1) worksheet that contains data you want to
compute and analyse.
o Demonstrate appropriate use of:
▪ Basic Formatting
▪ Basic formulas and functions
▪ Basic charts
o Key features implemented are listed clearly at the
bottom/end of each worksheet.
o Other draft worksheets containing the datasets from
singstat.gov.sg, data.gov.sg and other sources of data, if
any.
d. Feedback will be given in the following weeks.
3.2 Final Phase
a. Submission of final Excel workbook in LMS by Friday, 10 Dec 2021,
2359hrs.
b. The final phase of Excel project should include the following Excel
features”
• Basic Formatting features
• Basic/Advanced formulas and functions
• Excel Charts
• Pivot Tables/Charts with Filters or Slicers
• Other creativity features
c. Indicate in the Excel project checklist with the tasks that are completed.

3.3 Penalty
a. Any plagiarism of work would result in zero marks for this project.
b. LATE submissions will be penalized as follows:
Late Submission Penalty
Less than or equal to 24 hours after
deadline
10% of maximum marks
More than 24 hrs to less than or equal
to 48 hrs after deadline
20% of maximum marks
After 48 hours Will not be marked – XF
For example, if you submit 10 hrs after the deadline, maximum marks of assignment is
100 marks, the penalty is 10% of 100 marks = 10 marks. If you originally awarded 50
marks, the final marks after penalty for late submission is 50 – 10 marks = 40 marks.

4 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
4.1 This subject component carries a weightage of 35% in the total
coursework.
4.2 The Excel project will be assessed based on the following criteria.

• Project Background: Write ONE(1) paragraph to discuss the
chosen area of interest.
• Problem Statements: Describe in ONE(1) paragraph on the
problems/issues that are of concern lately. Include citations of
relevant Internet articles to support your research findings.
• Narrative of data sets:
o Provide a description of each dataset that is used. You
may import the datasets (usually in csv files) into the
same Excel workbook as separate worksheets and
specify the source of datasets.
o Discuss the relevance of datasets that will be used and
the coverage of datasets.
• Listing and purposes of all worksheets.

Datasets:
• Use of REAL datasets from SG open data portals, such as
singstat.gov.sg, data.gov.sg and other publicly available data
sources or any other dataset that has been approved by
your tutor.
• Relevance and coverage of datasets.
• Datasets have been cleaned.
• Citation of the data source at the bottom of each worksheet.

Basic Formatting Features:
• This includes the use of appropriate alignments, fonts, borders
and shadings.
• Apply page formatting (include header & footer) for each
worksheet.
• Relevant use of Conditional Formatting to format the
worksheet.
• At the bottom of each worksheet, provide a summary of
Excel formatting and other features that are used.

Basic/Advanced Formulas & Functions:
Use correct and relevant formulas and functions that are used in data
manipulation in Excel with the real datasets.
• Basic Formulas & Functions – Use of FOUR (4) or more
basic statistical formulas and functions (e.g. SUM,
AVERAGE, MAX, MIN).
• Advanced Formulas & Functions –Use of FOUR (4) or
more advanced formulas & functions (e.g. IF, COUNTIF,
SUMIF, LOOKUP).

Charts:
• Include a minimum of THREE (3) different meaningful chart
types in the worksheets to present information.
o Pie Chart
o Doughnut Chart
o Column Chart
o Bar Chart
o Line Chart
o Area Chart
• Chart formatting to include legend, chart title, data labels
and axis titles.
• Use of chart annotation e.g. textbox, arrows, sparklines and/or
trendlines.

Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, Filters and Slicers:
• Use of ONE (1) meaningful Pivot Table and ONE (1) Pivot
Charts that are functional and relevant.
• Use Slicers or Filters in your Excel dashboard to analyse and
filter your data.
• Students may place the Pivot Tables/Pivot Charts in a single
page (landscape view) that provides a single screen view of
multiple charts.

Creativity & Initiatives:
Exploration of FOUR (4) or more Excel features that are NOT taught
in class. You can include any of the followings:
• Advanced Excel formulas and functions (e.g. Index, Match,
etc)
• Text manipulation related functions (e.g. TRIM,
CONCATENATE, LEFT)
• What‐If Analysis (e.g. Scenario Manager and Goal Seek)
• Excel form controls (e.g. checkboxes, drop‐down list)
• Use of Infographics and Icons in the data bars for your charts
• Use of advanced charts (e.g. Treemap, Map chart) that are not
taught in class
• Graphics ‐ Appropriate use of graphics such as Microsoft
clip‐art, Images and Word Art that are relevant to the project
theme.
The allocation of marks will depend on the complexity and relevance
of the creativity features.
