Polygamy Is The Most Common Form Of Polygamy
There are many problems within our society, polygamy has been a problem since the 19th century and still is today. Polygamy is the practice of
having more than one spouse at a time. Polygyny is the most common form of polygamy, consists of one man has multiple wives (Buck, 2012).
Polygamy is illegal in the United States, Canada and many other countries around the world. In the 1800s, under the direction of its founder Joseph
Smith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints (LDS) began to practice polygamy. Members of the LDS Church, also known as Mormons,
believed that Smith was the prophet of God and they must follow his teachings if they wanted to go to heaven. After Smith's death, the new prophet,
Brigham Young, began publically teaching the practice of polygamy (Guiora, 2010). In order to escape persecution for their religious practice of
polygamy, the LDS Church moved the Utah, which is where a large amount of the polygamous community lives today. The United States government
was opposed to the practice of polygamy. The U.S. opposed polygamy so vehemently, that Utah was denied statehood until the practice was declared
illegal. In 1862, Congress passed the first act that criminalized polygamy, the Morrill Act for the Suppression of Polygamy. The Morrill Act states,
"every person having a husband or wife living, who shall marry any other person...shall be adjudged guilty of bigamy" (Guiora, 2010, p. 395). This Act
was not effective, because the witnesses needed

Polygamy in Canada Essay
Within Canada we have a generous amount of freedom but this leads to the abuse of our system. This is especially true with regards to polygamy in
Bountiful, BC. Because women are susceptible to mental abuse in polygamist relationships it should continue to be illegal in Canada. If this law is in
enforced it would help women to be freed of the oppression caused by male domination, eliminate the need for women to suppress feelings that conflict
with the ideals of the polygamy life, and aid in avoiding depression resulting from the build–up of concealed feelings.
Polygamy is the case in which a man or a woman has multiple spouses. One branch of polygamy is termed "polygyny", which is when "one man is
married to several wives" (Zeitzen 3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Providing such controls permits women from becoming independent: to think emotionally and mentally development. Of course here an opponent
might validly argue that men must take the dominant role and provide authority due to the idea: "women report more intense and persistent anger than
do men" (88:1546). However, even though it is true that women are more susceptible to revealing their emotions; women are just as capable as men to
run their lives in a constructive, healthy way. Polygynist men have hidden behind the blanket of religion to justify their male supremacy and dismantle
the strength and equality of women in a whole.
Many women in polygynist relationships tend to hide their feelings, but why? Daphne Braham writes "[women are] taught to suppress [these]
emotions and to put all their energy into obeying the word of their prophet." (17) Therefore, any thoughts of resentment, jealousy or so forth are not
acceptable. When a man has so many wives they have no choice but to be submissive if they want to avoid being left out; because the husband can
turn to another one of his wives to get what he desires.

Polygamist Wedding: Has Legalizing Gay Marriage Encouraged the Legalization of Polygamy?

country could be legalizing polygamist marriage.

Polygamy In The United States
Imagine having more than one mom and 40 siblings. Or having to share your husband with you sister. Or being rejected by the community you grew
up in for being a young man. This is a reality for most people living in a polygamous society. TV shows like "Big Love" and "Sister Wives" have
romanticized the practice of Polygamy; But it does not deserve glorification. Polygamy has a negative impact on society because it hurts women,
young men, and children. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person simultaneously; also known as plural marriage.
"Traditionally, polygamy has been practised in Hindu, Islamic, and Christian (Mormon) societies, among others" (Chittom) Polygamy is illegal in
the united states, however it is still practiced. In fact, polygamy is becoming more widespread. According to the Daily Beast, "In 2001, only 7
percent of Americans deemed polygamy morally acceptable. Now 16 percent find it morally acceptable. (Allen) Plural marriage is becoming more
popular. "Rough estimates place the polygamous population in the U.S. is somewhere between 50,000 to 100,000 people" (Allen) Even though plural
marriage is illegal in most 1st world countries, "Polygamy remains a common practice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can become dangerous. " the combination of distorted sex ratios, particularly in poorer classes, means that resentment and anger towards women
can be predictably fueled with a ready supply of frustrated risk–prone young men." (Mcdermott) Because so many of the young women in polygamous
societies are married off to much older men that already have multiple wives, most of the young males are left single, and this leads to a more violent
society. "Unmarried men are more likely to exhibit violent and antisocial behaviors including getting into trouble with the law, substance abuse, and
other forms of aggressive behavior. (McDermott) Polygamist societies are unsafe

What Is Polygamy A Subculture
If you have never heard of polygamy you will and if you had in the past it was most likely due to the hit reality series "Sister Wives" about a
polygamist family in the state of Utah. Polygamy is defined as the practice or condition of having more than one spouse at a time. Polygamy is
nothing new and has been practice for hundreds of years but it is now seen as an immoral act, and a criminal act in a large majority of the of the
world. Now even though polygamy is wide known in certain areas like Africa (South Africa, Kenya), Asia (middle east), etc. Still there are rules that
they must abide by and it frowned on in an obese manner in areas like the United States, Australia, and China, because as a society we see it as an
unjust act that can not be upheld by any justification but it is permitted in the bible. I support polygamy because I see no fault in the act of a family with
multiple spouses. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are not very many people that practice polygamy and those that don't practice polygamy do not support it. Polygamist does not follows the norms
in society nor do they practice traditional marriage. Polygamy has been documented in the bible, but men like Abraham, or Jacob had two or more
wives. Often those that practice this form of marriage are often religious and believe that they will ascend to a higher place after death by reproduction

The Pros And Cons Of Polygamy
Polygamy is a marriage that involves multiple spouses depending on the group of people culture will determine whether or not the multiple spouses
are male or female. Due to the fact that there are different pros and cons that come with the practice of polygamy. There are two different branches of
polygamy: polyandry and polygyny. Even though both branches of polygamy has their cultural pros and cons and differ in family construction and
kinship, the sigma that the American culture has placed upon this type of marriage has given the people predetermined but condemning conclusion.
Dr. Goldstein, a professor of anthropology at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio wrote an ethnography of the cultural practice of
fraternal polyandry in Limi, Tibet. Within this his paper, Dr. Goldstein discusses how the practice of fraternal polyandry is where two or more
brothers (blood related) will take one wife into marriage. This will is beneficial when deciding which child in the next generation will inherit and
work the farming land that will be passed down within the family. When Dr. Goldstein asks why the gentleman will not take one wife each and all
live on the family land the response was that was given was that there would too many wives competing to make sure that their child gets equal and/or
more share of the land when the fathers dies. Another reason for the practice was the fact that the eldest son within the culture will inherit the most
goods and land from their family.

Polygamy Is Not All The Hype
People have participated in polygamy in approximately 85 percent of societies (Kaczor). Our society is one of the eighty–five percent that has
practiced polygamy. Polygamy is given the negative bias in our society, but the Brown family is pushing the boundaries of reality television by trying
to shine a positive light on polygamy. There are two sides to polygamy, like every story, polygamy is not all the hype it is given. The nettle of the
proponents and opponents of polygamy is a battle of morals and ethics. Should it be ethical for someone to have more than one spouse? Is it morally
acceptable to let children live with multiple stepmothers? Polygamy is not a common practice in the United States due to the fact that it is illegal, but ...

Polygynandry is where two or more men are married to two or more woman. Polygamy may come in different forms, but the general idea of polygamy
is having more than one spouse.
The idea of having more than one spouse originated millions of years ago. During times when the female population was higher than the male
population, polygamy was common so that each female could have a sense of financial stability from a husband. Polygamy was accepted throughout
societies because of the need for woman to have a husband to financially support her and give her a family. Then when better medical care was able to
save more lives the male and female population became almost equal in numbers, this caused the Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church to
impose the rule of having just one wife, but multiple other lovers were the norm (History of Polygamy). Polygamy was then unacceptable in the United
States when The Roman Catholic Church imposed the new rule. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–days Saints allowed polygamy into the United
Sates (History of Polygamy). When polygamy was allowed back into the United States many people were upset with the unethical practice being
allowed back into the United States. Polygamy in the United States ended back in the year 1890 when Wilford Woodruff was the president. But
officially it was the year 1899 when the members of this church began to be thrown out for being polygamous (History

Polygamy Should Be Legalized in The United States
Should polygamy be legalized in United States? Love and marriage is traditionally defined by the union of two people. However, one may argue that
there are overwhelming benefits of a nontraditional marriage. It's often quoted that it takes a village to raise a child, not just one mother and one father
in a household. This view is supported within polygamy. Polygamy is defined as "A marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one
mate at the same time" (Marriam–Webster). This practice of polygamy goes back for most of man's recorded history and is mentioned in most major
religions. Even though most religions do not practice polygamy anymore it is still apart the Islamic and Mormon doctrine. It is illegal in the United
States to marry someone while still lawfully married to another person. The outlaw of polygamy is a violation of a citizen's Constitutional right to
practice their religion. For those who currently practice outside the law, this creates a constitutional midpoint where they may be imprisoned for
exercising their rights. Although it may be illegal in the United States, polygamy is a principle aspect of several religions; it supports women and
children and it helps reduce the number of unmarried women. The First Amendment of the United States gives citizens the freedom to practice religion
and freedom of speech. As human beings we should have the right to practice our religious beliefs without fear

Some of the most influential and respected individuals in history had open marriages. Although research shows that open marriages create significant
complications, couples who are non–monogamous believe it is essential for a successful marriage. But whatever the situation, an open marriage is not
acceptable in society. There are explanations to why it is imperative that couples remain monogamous in their relationship.Polygamy is undignified, it

Finally, polygamy is wrong because it affects the children involved tremendously. In Polygamy and Mental Health of Adolescents, authors Sami
Hamdan, Judy Auerbach, and Alan Apter exam the effects of polygamy and suggests that thefamily structure has a substantial impact on the mental
health of children. It states, "Several studies found that compared to their counterparts living in intact families with both biological parents, children
from nontraditional family structures exhibited more aggressive and antisocial behaviors, conduct disorders, communication difficulties, and
adjustment, problems. They also had a poor self–concept and higher rates of school attrition, sexual activity, drug abuse, and alcoholism". (Hamdan,

Polygamy: The Negatives for Women A woman pushes as hard as she can for the last time. "It's a baby girl!" the man announces, as the new mother
hangs her head in sight of the hardships her baby, Elizabeth, will face. Miles away in a hospital, another woman gives birth to a healthy baby girl,
Marley. As she sees her baby for the first time, she smiles knowing all the great adventures this baby will experience in her life. The polygamous
mom takes the little girl home to her family, a family where she has more than one mother and many brothers and sisters. As she grows up she
lives her life trying to be "proper" and "sweet" in the eyes of the prophet. Somewhere far away, Marley is outside playing with her mother and
learning how to be a kid. At the age of fourteen, young girls like Marley are innocent and should be going on dates, having fun with friends, and
living their life, but for a fourteen year old Elizabeth, she is married to a man twice her age to be his second wife. As she begins her life with her
husband, she sees the jealousy of the first wife and the neglect she feels by her presence. Shortly after, the young girl is replaced by another new
wife after having a child. Ever since the day she was born, she had no control over these stages happening. Her fate was determined from time of

Polygamy in the United States
Polygamy is the practice of having multiple spouses at one time, and has been considered a controversial social and legal topic in society, gaining
attention as a subject in which multiple opinions are held. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of polygamist
families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its main characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage.
However, this kind of marriage is intriguing because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in husband–wife
dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in media accounts of these relationships. That being said,
appreciating this form of marriage, as in any union, requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general interactions of
the husband–wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type of union exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage.
With more information regarding polygamist marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative patterns,
ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these relationships.
Literature Review Like many social trends, marriage in the United States has changed over time. Investigation of these trends can aid in the
comprehension of the status of marriage in our society, while also

The Practice Of Polygamy In America
Could you imagine living in a world where it is acceptable for a man to marry more than one woman and be open about it? Not many can and that is
why the practice of polygamy such is seen as taboo. The families usually live very private lives and they do not interact with a lot of the rest of
America due to anti–bigamy society we live in. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person at the same time (Webster 2015).
This is not to be confused with an open relationship or an open marriage. This topic has been viewed and deemed as controversial for many years. As a

The Legalization Of Polygamy
The Legalization of Polygamy Sex is one of the most widely controversial topics in America. The subject comes up in multiple situations: dinner
parties, coffee dates, even when someone is eavesdropping on a neighbor 's endeavors with his mistress. Nowadays, it seems as if horror stories about
infidelity are more common than happy marriages. Cheating on a spouse is morally wrong, so why not make it easy and legalize the act of polygamy?
Polygamy is defined as willfully and knowingly having more than one husband or wife. As unnatural as it seems, many successful people have been in
multiple marriages at once. The founder of the Mormons, Joseph Smith Jr., had up to thirty–three wives, all ranging from the ages of fourteen to sixty.

tried to gain the right for polygamy. After timeless efforts and multiple failures, they started to practice underground. The final straw before
underground families was the Short Creek Raid in 1953. Police arrested the prophet, two men and three of their wives in a little place known as Short

Arizona, and Idaho to raid Short Creek again. The raid resulted in forty–six arrests of men and women in the community (Duncan 321). Following the
raid, numerous families had to go into hiding and live their lives as inconspicuously as possible. There are four polygnist clans. Unfortunately, these
families had a great deal of hardships. Many children in the underground world of polygamy are home–schooled, further insulating them from the

Morality and Polygamy
There are many people opposed to the concept of polygamous marriages. Polygamy is legal in some countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, but
illegal in others, such as the United States of America. Many have personal, religious, and/or cultural reasons to disagree with such practices, but is the
practice of polygamy morally wrong, or is it acceptable? Some argue that it is wrong because of the negative consequences caused by such marriages;

If this is the case, this tier receives the high score of one.
There are some who do not see why a woman would agree to enter a polygamous marriage and believe that "only fear of superior force could bring a
woman to 'agree' to the injustice of a polygamous marriage" (Vogel, Ursula 243). Although some women would only agree to such a lifestyle through
force, many others invite and prefer the idea of polygamy to monogamy. Some women believe that the shared responsibility takes the weight off a
single spouse and distributes it equally. Other women enjoy the sisterhood of their sister wives and appreciate having the company of other women
within their marriage. There can be many reasons why a person might prefer polygamy. So it is accurate to assume that some woman do choose
polygamy willingly. The second tier is the general moral considerations. It consists of prima facie principles which are the obvious do's and don'ts
that most people have been raised with. For example, a person should tell the truth and not lie, be fair and not cheat, help and not hurt others, unless
(in that specific situation) it must be overruled for a great reason. This tier is valued at zero to 100. In all cases, the higher the value, the higher the
morality and its permissibility. In this tier, basic respect for individuals must be considered. There are many issues that can fall into this category such

Polygamy
Polygamy is the practice of being married to one or more person at the same time. Polygamy exists in three specific forms polygyny wherein a man has
multiple simultaneous wives; polyandry where in a woman has multiple simultaneous husbands. Woman has multiple simultaneous husbands; or group
marriages wherein the family unit consists of multiple husbands and multiple wives. Bigamy is the act of going through a marriage ceremony while
already married to another person. It differs from polygamy in that bigamy is the practice of entering into marriage with two or more persons at the
same time without the knowledge of either of the spouses. Bigamy is a crime as the person is already legally married to the first partner and
deceptively goes through another legal marriage keeping everyone in the dark. In case of Polygamy the person enters into simultaneous marriages with

According to a 2012 study, monogamy has a crucial advantage over polygyny: "the more egalitarian distribution of women, which reduces male
competition and social problems". Not only does it reduce male competition and social problems between individuals, but monogamous marriage also
"results in significant improvements in child welfare, including lower rates of neglect, abuse, accidental death, homicide and intra–household conflict"
(Friedersdorf, 2015). By shifting male efforts from seeking wives to paternal investment, systematised monogamy increases long–term planning,
economic productivity, savings and child investment. Nonetheless, when a high–status man takes two wives, a lower–status man gets no wife. If the
high–status man takes three wives, two lower–status men get no wives. This "competitive, zero–dynamic sets off a competition among high–status men
in who's going to get the most wives" (Friedersdorf, 2015), which leaves lower–status men out in the cold. Those men, denied access to life's most
stabilising and civilising institution, are fairly disadvantaged and often turn to behaviours like crime and violence. Thus, polygamy should not be

Polygamy in Islam has restrictions
Hebah Gaballa

Polygamy, in general, came in the world before Islam came to be. There's polygamy, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygamy means a spouse can have
multiple spouses. Polyandry means a women can have multiple husbands. Polygyny means a man can have multiple wives. Polygyny would be the
right term to use since it's the only one allowed in Islam. In Islam, there are two types of marriages permitted, monogamy and limited polygyny. Limited
polygyny comes with some restrictions stated in the Quran. In Islam, marriage is a sign of God's power and glory. Marriage is completing half the
faith. The Quran says "from His signs is that He has created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may get peace [and tranquility] through
them; and He placed between you love and mercy. In these are signs for the people who reflect" (Surah Ar– Room, 30:21). Ideally, monogamy is the
main form of marriage in Islam. Polygyny is a provision in marriage that comes with restrictions and certain circumstances. The majority of Muslim
men are in monogamous marriages. Polygamy didn't first exist in Islam. It had existed long before Islam came in the world. The Bible says that, the
grandson of Adam, Lamech, "took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah" (The Book of Genesis, 4:19).

has been introduced as the next controversial action that "should" be legalized. It has been in the media for years, whether you saw it on one of the hit
television shows based on it, or on the news when Warren Jeffs was arrested for child sexual abuse. With the media's attention on this topic, everyone
has their own opinions and arguments. The arguments from the people against legalization, and their reliable evidence that support it, highly outweigh
their opponent's. Reasons why polygamy should not be legalized, include, it has negative effects on women, and children, and because of the problems
it imposes on the United States judicial system.
To begin, polygamy should not be legalized because it has negative effects on the women or wives involved in polygamous marriages. It is shown in
the media all too frequently, the husband in a polygamous marriage being arrested for the hideous acts of abuse on their wives and sometimes even
their children. An example of this would be Carolyn Jessop's story. Carolyn Jessop is one of the many victims of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus

Mormon Polygamy
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints (LDS) was formally organized in a small log cabin in upstate New York in 1830. It took 117 years–
until 1947 – for the Church to grow from the initial six members to one million" (Mormon Newsroom). Many people associate polygamy with
Mormonism, however polygamy has been banned in The LDS Church since 1890. Mormons believe they have a Christian faith, but many Protestant
Christians do not accept Mormons as genuine Christians because of the differences in beliefs. While Mormonism is a fast growing religion with more
than 15 million members, many non–Mormons have misconceptions about what Mormons actually believe (Mormon Newsroom). Although, The

the 13 Articles of Faith, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. The 13 Articles of Faith are thirteen statements that were written by
Joseph Smith to summarize the main beliefs of The LDS Church. They also believe that men will be punished for their sins. LDS "believe that the

The Pros And Cons Of Polygamy
Marriage is a social institution that is practiced globally. Traditionally marriages are known to occur between one man and one woman. However,
cultural values and time have reshaped and birthed new types of marriages. Polygamy is a type of marriage that is often practiced around the world
specifically in Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Polyamorous marriages have been in existence for centuries.Polygamy is classified into two categories,
polygyny, and polyandry. Polygyny is the most popular type of polygamy, in this type of polygamousmarriage, a man is married to multiple women.
On the other hand, polyandry which is the least familiar type of polygamy is where a woman is married to multiple husbands. The intolerance of
Mormons in the United States has led to the outlawing of polyamorous marriages. The Morrill Anti Bigamy law of 1862 outlawed the practice of
polygamy in the United States. Like many other laws, this law can be overturned. In fact, it should be reversed because illegalizing polygamy is
unethical. Polygamy should be legalized because it is unconstitutional for it to be illegal, same–sex marriages and interracial marriages are legal,
therefore so should polyamorous marriages. In addition, legalizing polygamy would prevent immigrant families who practice polygamy from being
separated and it would also strengthen the feminist movement.
The prohibition of polygamy violates the freedom of expressing religion and the 14th amendment of the United States Constitution

Why Polygamy Should Remain Illegal
"Polygamy: Every one who practises or enters into or in any manner agrees or consents to practise or enter into any form of polygamy, or any kind
of conjugal union with more than one person at the same time, whether or not it is by law recognized as a binding form of marriage, or (b)
celebrates, assists or is a party to a rite, ceremony, contract or consent that purports to sanction a relationship. If found guilty of an indictable offence
and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years." (Criminal Code,1985) The criminal code provides a penalty of up to 5 years in prison
but prosecutions are rare. Despite the religious beliefs, polygamy should remain illegal and should be enforced strictly. Polygamy brings on various

Recent news has come out that 12 and 13 year old girls were moved from Canada to the US to marry widely known polygamous, Warren Jeffs who
now is in jail named. Currently, Jeffs is facing allegation he married the 3 girls through 2004 and 2005 while he was at the age of 48. (Keller, 2011)
Consequently, women are highly affected by polygamy due to its tradition of marrying young, abusive relationships and deep jealousy.
Children are currently a major part of polygamy. By far children suffer the most in polygamy and its extremely difficult for children to escape
polygamy if they would like to. These communities feel losing one children they are losing all the people they would have as their offspring.
Polygamy needs to remain illegal to prevent them from experiencing being neglected, abused and taught wrongful gender equality. Children who are
raised in polygamy often do not have much say in what happens in their lives. Due to the various amount of wives the man in the polygamous
relationship might have depends, on how many children that will be born. Children could have a lot of insecurities due to the fact some children might
be subject to favouritism. With so many children it would be hard to make everyone feel special without

The Curious Case of Polygamy
Abstract:
As of 2015, thirty–seven U.S. states have legalize same–sex marriage, and with arguments in a landmark case currently being presented in the Supreme
Court this month; there is little doubt that the modern definition of legal marriage will soon be forever changed in The United States. While same–sex
marriage is still the center of fierce debate and opposition from primarily religious conservatives, public opinion reflects a more tolerant social
consensus. Despite this relatively recent legal trend of marriage law reform, same–sex relationships are obviously nothing new. Like same–sex
relationships, polygamous relationships have also existed in the U.S. regardless of state recognition. Curiously, unlike same–sex marriage, virtually no
significant progress has been made for legal recognition of polyamorous unions. One could argue that "poly–progress" is more than just stagnant, but
moving in a negative direction considering Supreme Court rulings consistently upholding polygamy bans. Mainstream representation of polygamy, or
debate and discussion on its merits seem virtually non–existent, save the occasional voyeurism of reality television shows or liberalism of
"think–pieces" buried deep within online newspapers archives. Monogamy commands such extreme reinforcement in American culture that polygamy
is unconsciously considered "not up for debate," and synonymous with evil even across

The Supreme Court also felt that the donation spirit was also compromised by using it for polygamy. The Church of the Latter–Day Saints had to drop
polygamy in order to maintain the land or be continually rejected from the society the Church of the Latter Day Saints wanted to join. The reason this
case ended polygamy was because the church would lose the donated lands they practiced their religion on. The loss of these lands would mean the
end of the Church of the Latter Day Saint community because the church would be left without a place to practice. One of the ways the Church of
the Latter Day Saints would be able to keep land to practice on was to end polygamy, which would end the spread of polygamy. This Supreme Court
ruling was based on

Polygamy In News Report
The only sort of news story we are likely to hear concerning polygamy are those documenting the abuses committed by male patriarchs in which the
victims are women and children. The media's portrayals highlight the maltreatments suffered inside cult–like compounds where the residents live in
complete isolation from society, and are coaxed in to complying with orders given by a prophet who proclaims to speak directly with God (Beaman,
2006). These accounts are usually led to light by some brave, young girl who made a mad dash for freedom to escape an arranged marriage to a much
older man. The reports often discuss the prevalence of child brides, forced marriages, and incest within polygamist Mormonism. Beaman (2006) argues

Iturriaga and Saguy (2017) found three arguments posed by plural wives concerning why they feel polygamy is superior to monogamy: (a)
monogamous men are perceived as needy, immature, and monopolizing of the monogamous woman's time, (b) plural marriage provides female
companionship and a sense of sisterhood, and (c) polygamy allows more time for education, leisure, and employment opportunities. The respondents
report having an abundance of personal time in which they pursue their own interests independent from their spouses and sister wives. These women
report that they have these freedoms as a direct result of their plural unions. They also share the opinion that a little distance is a powerful tool in
creating successful marriages. For example, if a wife spends two nights per week with her husband, versus all nights spent together for monogamous
couples, the marriage will not become stagnant over time (Iturriaga and Saguy,

Is Polygamy A Bad Social Sentiment?

polygamy is going against the law of God. Teachers in Christianity call it a bad social sentiment in view of their extraordinary research both in the

economic wellbeing or even political gain. At different circumstances, it is a method for subduing over the top sexual desire or a statement of earnest

An essential affirmation to respected polygamy is that it has fundamentally dependably been something that particular rich and more blissful men
could abuse, since keeping up more than one life accomplice and set of kids in discrete families is fiscally costly (Schlehlein, 2013).
The Old Testament is clear about its perspective of different mates among its human rulers. What a couple of individuals perceive, regardless, is no
area exists that denies polygamy among Israel 's tribes. Despite the way that God himself ruled Israel when they left Egypt, he knew there would
likely be a period when they would require a human rule over them.
In spite of the way that He admonished any future Israelite ruler that they ought not to have many life accomplices, God did not charge that they should
have one and just a lone (Schlehlein, 2013).
God knew rulers who searched after various mates would be enticed to wed ladies from outside the Twelve Tribes of Israel (doubters) who could
lead them far from him. This is viably what happened to King Solomon who, however sharp, wedded remote ladies who as time goes on, committed
many sins because of it( 1Kings 11).

Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse and is culturally accepted in many parts of the world, but is illegal in the United States.
There are two well known forms of polygamy, both of which are still presently practiced in numerous cultures globally, polygyny and polyandry.
These practices take place in societies where it is important to have either more men or more women in a families' household based on the kind of
environment they reside in. This paper is going to take a look at who practices polygamy, the history of polygamy in the United States, and how this

In industrialized societies, it is something that has been made illegal, and is considered deviant. When most people think of polygamy they think of
polygyny, the marriage of one man with multiple wives, and endless children. Here in the United States the most common occurrence of polygamy was
in the 1800s, through the Mormon religion, and more specifically the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter–Day Saints. Through the reading of the
Bible, the leader of the Latter–Day Saints church, Joseph Smith, had revelations that encouraged him take a second wife as many of the members of
the Old Testament had done. The rest of the United States reacted negatively to polygamy and Congress passed several laws prohibited polygamy.
However, Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws because they believed it was within their right to do so based on the Bill of
Rights which protected freedom of religion (Embry 2016).
Polygamy has been illegal in the United States since 1878, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that freedom to practice the Mormon religion did not
extend to having multiple wives (Reynolds v United States 1878). Federal law does not allow prospective immigrants who practice polygamy into the
United States. Although, there has been polygamy found in New York among some immigrants from countries in which

Why Polygamy Should Be Legal
Could you imagine living in a world where it is acceptable for a man to marry more than one woman and be open about it? A large number cannot
and the practice of polygamy is seen as a taboo. The families usually live private lives, and they do not interact with the rest of America due to
anti–bigamy society we live in. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person at the same time. This is not to be confused with an
open relationship or an open marriage. This topic was viewed as controversial for years. As a practice that was not accepted in the public eye, it
recently gained more attention with mainstream media and culture. Shows on television such as "Sister Wives" may pose questions if polygamy
should be legally practiced, and it should not be. The stronger actions that law enforcement continues to take against polygamist communities are
justified. Women who partake in the practice often times are not old enough or aware enough to be offered a real choice in the polygamist marriage.
Furthermore, the young women engaging in the practice makes it illegal. They should be taken out of these environments as well as have the choice
to live their lives as they please. Polygamy can equally be seen as a way of oppressing women. The wives are forced to share their husband with
multiple women, while addressing the husband as their "leader". Polygamous unions nonetheless are still thriving in present day America as of 2015.

Polygamy : A Common Type Of Marriage
DEFINITIONPolygamy can be defined as a type of marriage in which more than one spouse exists in the marriage. Bigamy is the act of going into
another marriage while already being married to someone else.
HISTORY OF POLYGAMY Polygamy dates back to a long time ago and has been practiced for many centuries by people from different cultures and
different religious beliefs and backgrounds. Centuries back, the most common type of polygamy was polygyny. No one really knows how or where
polygamy originates from but there are ideas. Polygamy is more common in places that were once part of a colony. An example of such a place is
Africa. Polygamy is very common in parts of Africa that were once colonized, take for example Nigeria. A reason why polygamy exists in such
places is because during the period of colonization there were more women than men due to the fact that most men were off fighting wars. In such
cases, ladies were married off to men who already had wives and men with more than one wives got a lot of popularity. It is also believed that
polygamy originated from religion. Although there were cases of polygamy in Christianity, it was never written anywhere in the bible that a man could
have more than one wife. With this, there were still lots of cases mentioned about a man having more than one wife in the old testament in the Bible.
Powerful men and kings had hundreds of wives and concubines. Although there were no laws regarding polygamy back then, it can be said that

men to be lazy. Throughout her speech, Joseph speaks of, what she believes are, the positives of polygamy without realizing how non–feminist it is.

The Mormon Polygamy
INTRODUCTION
When one thinks about marriages or weddings in the United States, Americans may often reminiscence on two individuals tying the knot. However, in
the western United States, and in parts of Canada, more and more people are practicing polygamy, which is the act of an individual marrying another
person(s), after one already has a spouse. Although the practice is illegal, individuals within the Fundamental Latter–Day Saints Church partake in the
activity, as it is a divine part and calling of their religion. The FLDS is a break–off sect off the mainstream Mormon, or Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter–Day Saints, Church. The Mormon Church originally practiced polygamy, up until The Manifesto, which was issued in 1890, by Wilford

this lifetime, according to Miller. They are two separate entities, and many people get confused by this. I have seen this from my own personal

Monogamy Vs Polygamy
Relationships are complicated, especially romantic ones; they involve a wide range of emotions and expectations that need to be met or the
relationship will fail. When it comes to polygamy there are even more variables added to the equation since there are additional partners involved in the
relationship. Unlike the common belief that polygamy is where a man has multiple wives, it is actually much more in depth where both sexes can have
other romantic partners. As long as one lets their partner know who they are seeing the relationship is considered healthy, although there is still the
obvious possibility of jealousy occurring. Honesty is everything in polygamy, even though individuals are allowed to be romantically involved with

In the United States it is illegal to be in an any of the three forms of polygamy if one is married. In the early days Mormons were even persecuted if
they were found practicing polygamy. If individuals want to be polyamorous they must do so without being lawfully wedded to their partners. In a
society that is constantly progressing towards giving people their rights, polygamist still struggle in being viewed as a legitimate way of life. With the
gay rights movement having so much momentum and finally becoming legal in the United States, polygamist thought the outcome could soon be the
same for them. The one major argument against polygamy is that it is a choice unlike the predetermination of one's sexual orientation. Critics suggest
that individuals should just be single instead of engaging in a relationship where they are not faithful to one person. Although it is not certain where the
future of polygamy is headed, the controversial lifestyle is growing in popularity as more people explore their sexual and emotional identities.
There is no doubt that as time goes on new generations develop different attitudes than their parents which in turn shapes the modern world we live in.
As far as marriages go, people are no longer in such rush to get married, have children, and start the typical family associated with adulthood. This in
part could be because of high divorce rates that many individuals have experienced either with their parents or someone they know. Cathy Meyer

However, if a woman agrees to marry into such a family she should be prepared for these feelings.
It has also been said that polygamy undermines the institution of marriage and the idea of devotion and giving oneself wholly to their spouse. It is not
possible for one man to give himself wholly to four different women which means each wife is really only married to one fourth of a man. The
husband is often accused of being selfish and greedy because he is not satisfied with his family and he feels the need to go out and find another new
woman and more children to add to it.
Polygamy also has many negative effects on the children. Often times the wives will be upset and in a bad mood because they are missing the

Polygamy Is The Most Common Form Of Polygamy

  • 1. Polygamy Is The Most Common Form Of Polygamy There are many problems within our society, polygamy has been a problem since the 19th century and still is today. Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse at a time. Polygyny is the most common form of polygamy, consists of one man has multiple wives (Buck, 2012). Polygamy is illegal in the United States, Canada and many other countries around the world. In the 1800s, under the direction of its founder Joseph Smith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints (LDS) began to practice polygamy. Members of the LDS Church, also known as Mormons, believed that Smith was the prophet of God and they must follow his teachings if they wanted to go to heaven. After Smith's death, the new prophet, Brigham Young, began publically teaching the practice of polygamy (Guiora, 2010). In order to escape persecution for their religious practice of polygamy, the LDS Church moved the Utah, which is where a large amount of the polygamous community lives today. The United States government was opposed to the practice of polygamy. The U.S. opposed polygamy so vehemently, that Utah was denied statehood until the practice was declared illegal. In 1862, Congress passed the first act that criminalized polygamy, the Morrill Act for the Suppression of Polygamy. The Morrill Act states, "every person having a husband or wife living, who shall marry any other person...shall be adjudged guilty of bigamy" (Guiora, 2010, p. 395). This Act was not effective, because the witnesses needed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Polygamy in Canada Essay Within Canada we have a generous amount of freedom but this leads to the abuse of our system. This is especially true with regards to polygamy in Bountiful, BC. Because women are susceptible to mental abuse in polygamist relationships it should continue to be illegal in Canada. If this law is in enforced it would help women to be freed of the oppression caused by male domination, eliminate the need for women to suppress feelings that conflict with the ideals of the polygamy life, and aid in avoiding depression resulting from the build–up of concealed feelings. Polygamy is the case in which a man or a woman has multiple spouses. One branch of polygamy is termed "polygyny", which is when "one man is married to several wives" (Zeitzen 3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Providing such controls permits women from becoming independent: to think emotionally and mentally development. Of course here an opponent might validly argue that men must take the dominant role and provide authority due to the idea: "women report more intense and persistent anger than do men" (88:1546). However, even though it is true that women are more susceptible to revealing their emotions; women are just as capable as men to run their lives in a constructive, healthy way. Polygynist men have hidden behind the blanket of religion to justify their male supremacy and dismantle the strength and equality of women in a whole. Many women in polygynist relationships tend to hide their feelings, but why? Daphne Braham writes "[women are] taught to suppress [these] emotions and to put all their energy into obeying the word of their prophet." (17) Therefore, any thoughts of resentment, jealousy or so forth are not acceptable. When a man has so many wives they have no choice but to be submissive if they want to avoid being left out; because the husband can turn to another one of his wives to get what he desires. In Dena Hassouneh–Phillips' article, "Polygamy and Wife Abuse: A Qualitative Study of Muslim Women in America," she notes a report from a second wife who felt insignificant in her polygamous marriage due to the lack of attention ... Legal analysts believe the next bill to be passed in this country could be legalizing polygamist marriage. What is it? Polygamist Marriage is the union including more than two partners. There is a more specific breakdown of Polygamy. Polygyny is a marriage between one man and multiple women. Polyandry is the union of one woman and multiple men. • 4. Polygamy In The United States Imagine having more than one mom and 40 siblings. Or having to share your husband with you sister. Or being rejected by the community you grew up in for being a young man. This is a reality for most people living in a polygamous society. TV shows like "Big Love" and "Sister Wives" have romanticized the practice of Polygamy; But it does not deserve glorification. Polygamy has a negative impact on society because it hurts women, young men, and children. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person simultaneously; also known as plural marriage. "Traditionally, polygamy has been practised in Hindu, Islamic, and Christian (Mormon) societies, among others" (Chittom) Polygamy is illegal in the united states, however it is still practiced. In fact, polygamy is becoming more widespread. According to the Daily Beast, "In 2001, only 7 percent of Americans deemed polygamy morally acceptable. Now 16 percent find it morally acceptable. (Allen) Plural marriage is becoming more popular. "Rough estimates place the polygamous population in the U.S. is somewhere between 50,000 to 100,000 people" (Allen) Even though plural marriage is illegal in most 1st world countries, "Polygamy remains a common practice ... " the combination of distorted sex ratios, particularly in poorer classes, means that resentment and anger towards women can be predictably fueled with a ready supply of frustrated risk–prone young men." (Mcdermott) Because so many of the young women in polygamous societies are married off to much older men that already have multiple wives, most of the young males are left single, and this leads to a more violent society. • 5. What Is Polygamy A Subculture If you have never heard of polygamy you will and if you had in the past it was most likely due to the hit reality series "Sister Wives" about a polygamist family in the state of Utah. Polygamy is defined as the practice or condition of having more than one spouse at a time. Polygamy is nothing new and has been practice for hundreds of years but it is now seen as an immoral act, and a criminal act in a large majority of the of the world. Now even though polygamy is wide known in certain areas like Africa (South Africa, Kenya), Asia (middle east), etc. Still there are rules that they must abide by and it frowned on in an obese manner in areas like the United States, Australia, and China, because as a society we see it as an unjust act that can not be upheld by any justification but it is permitted in the bible. Due to the fact that there are different pros and cons that come with the practice of polygamy. There are two different branches of polygamy: polyandry and polygyny. Even though both branches of polygamy has their cultural pros and cons and differ in family construction and kinship, the sigma that the American culture has placed upon this type of marriage has given the people predetermined but condemning conclusion. Dr. Goldstein, a professor of anthropology at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio wrote an ethnography of the cultural practice of fraternal polyandry in Limi, Tibet. Within this his paper, Dr. Goldstein discusses how the practice of fraternal polyandry is where two or more brothers (blood related) will take one wife into marriage. This will is beneficial when deciding which child in the next generation will inherit and work the farming land that will be passed down within the family. When Dr. Goldstein asks why the gentleman will not take one wife each and all live on the family land the response was that was given was that there would too many wives competing to make sure that their child gets equal and/or more share of the land when the fathers dies. Another reason for the practice was the fact that the eldest son within the culture will inherit the most goods and land from their family. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Polygamy is given the negative bias in our society, but the Brown family is pushing the boundaries of reality television by trying to shine a positive light on polygamy. There are two sides to polygamy, like every story, polygamy is not all the hype it is given. The nettle of the proponents and opponents of polygamy is a battle of morals and ethics. Polygynandry is where two or more men are married to two or more woman. Polygamy may come in different forms, but the general idea of polygamy is having more than one spouse. The idea of having more than one spouse originated millions of years ago. During times when the female population was higher than the male population, polygamy was common so that each female could have a sense of financial stability from a husband. Polygamy was accepted throughout societies because of the need for woman to have a husband to financially support her and give her a family. Then when better medical care was able to save more lives the male and female population became almost equal in numbers, this caused the Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church to impose the rule of having just one wife, but multiple other lovers were the norm (History of Polygamy). Polygamy was then unacceptable in the United States when The Roman Catholic Church imposed the new rule. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–days Saints allowed polygamy into the United Sates (History of Polygamy). When polygamy was allowed back into the United States many people were upset with the unethical practice being allowed back into the United States. Polygamy in the United States ended back in the year 1890 when Wilford Woodruff was the president. • 8. Essay On Polygamy Polygamy Should Be Legalized in The United States Should polygamy be legalized in United States? Love and marriage is traditionally defined by the union of two people. However, one may argue that there are overwhelming benefits of a nontraditional marriage. It's often quoted that it takes a village to raise a child, not just one mother and one father in a household. This view is supported within polygamy. Polygamy is defined as "A marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one mate at the same time" (Marriam–Webster). This practice of polygamy goes back for most of man's recorded history and is mentioned in most major religions. Even though most religions do not practice polygamy anymore it is still apart the Islamic and Mormon doctrine. It is illegal in the United States to marry someone while still lawfully married to another person. The outlaw of polygamy is a violation of a citizen's Constitutional right to practice their religion. For those who currently practice outside the law, this creates a constitutional midpoint where they may be imprisoned for exercising their rights. Although it may be illegal in the United States, polygamy is a principle aspect of several religions; it supports women and children and it helps reduce the number of unmarried women. The First Amendment of the United States gives citizens the freedom to practice religion and freedom of speech. As human beings we should have the right to practice our religious beliefs without fear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Polygamy in the United States Polygamy is the practice of having multiple spouses at one time, and has been considered a controversial social and legal topic in society, gaining attention as a subject in which multiple opinions are held. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of polygamist families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its main characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage. However, this kind of marriage is intriguing because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in husband–wife dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in media accounts of these relationships. That being said, appreciating this form of marriage, as in any union, requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general interactions of the husband–wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type of union exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage. With more information regarding polygamist marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative patterns, ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these relationships. Nowadays, it seems as if horror stories about infidelity are more common than happy marriages. Cheating on a spouse is morally wrong, so why not make it easy and legalize the act of polygamy? Polygamy is defined as willfully and knowingly having more than one husband or wife. As unnatural as it seems, many successful people have been in multiple marriages at once. This angered the Mormons greatly and tried to gain the right for polygamy. After timeless efforts and multiple failures, they started to practice underground. The final straw before underground families was the Short Creek Raid in 1953. Police arrested the prophet, two men and three of their wives in a little place known as Short Creek, right above the Grand Canyon. The two men were arrested for cohabitation, which lead to government forces joining alliances with Utah, Arizona, and Idaho to raid Short Creek again. The raid resulted in forty–six arrests of men and women in the community (Duncan 321). Following the raid, numerous families had to go into hiding and live their lives as inconspicuously as possible. There are four polygnist clans. Unfortunately, these families had a great deal of hardships. • 14. Philosophy Paper on Morality and Polygamy Morality and Polygamy There are many people opposed to the concept of polygamous marriages. Polygamy is legal in some countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, but illegal in others, such as the United States of America. Many have personal, religious, and/or cultural reasons to disagree with such practices, but is the practice of polygamy morally wrong, or is it acceptable? Some argue that it is wrong because of the negative consequences caused by such marriages; yet ignore successful polygamous marriages altogether. I do not agree that all polygamous marriages have negative consequences. I argue that the practice of consensual polygamy can be morally acceptable under these conditions; (1) All parties must be aware, in advance, of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this is the case, this tier receives the high score of one. There are some who do not see why a woman would agree to enter a polygamous marriage and believe that "only fear of superior force could bring a woman to 'agree' to the injustice of a polygamous marriage" (Vogel, Ursula 243). Although some women would only agree to such a lifestyle through force, many others invite and prefer the idea of polygamy to monogamy. Some women believe that the shared responsibility takes the weight off a single spouse and distributes it equally. Other women enjoy the sisterhood of their sister wives and appreciate having the company of other women within their marriage. There can be many reasons why a person might prefer polygamy. So it is accurate to assume that some woman do choose polygamy willingly. The second tier is the general moral considerations. It consists of prima facie principles which are the obvious do's and don'ts that most people have been raised with. According to a 2012 study, monogamy has a crucial advantage over polygyny: "the more egalitarian distribution of women, which reduces male competition and social problems". Not only does it reduce male competition and social problems between individuals, but monogamous marriage also "results in significant improvements in child welfare, including lower rates of neglect, abuse, accidental death, homicide and intra–household conflict" (Friedersdorf, 2015). By shifting male efforts from seeking wives to paternal investment, systematised monogamy increases long–term planning, economic productivity, savings and child investment. Nonetheless, when a high–status man takes two wives, a lower–status man gets no wife. If the high–status man takes three wives, two lower–status men get no wives. This "competitive, zero–dynamic sets off a competition among high–status men in who's going to get the most wives" (Friedersdorf, 2015), which leaves lower–status men out in the cold. • 18. Polygamy : Polygamy, Polygyny, And Polyandry Essay Polygamy in Islam has restrictions Hebah Gaballa March 6, 2015 Dr. T. Vivian Religious Studies 316 Polygamy, in general, came in the world before Islam came to be. There's polygamy, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygamy means a spouse can have multiple spouses. Polyandry means a women can have multiple husbands. Polygyny means a man can have multiple wives. Polygyny would be the right term to use since it's the only one allowed in Islam. In Islam, there are two types of marriages permitted, monogamy and limited polygyny. Limited polygyny comes with some restrictions stated in the Quran. In Islam, marriage is a sign of God's power and glory. Marriage is completing half the faith. The Quran says "from His signs is that He has created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may get peace [and tranquility] through them; and He placed between you love and mercy. In these are signs for the people who reflect" (Surah Ar– Room, 30:21). Ideally, monogamy is the main form of marriage in Islam. Polygyny is a provision in marriage that comes with restrictions and certain circumstances. The majority of Muslim men are in monogamous marriages. Polygamy didn't first exist in Islam. It had existed long before Islam came in the world. Polygamy is a type of marriage that is often practiced around the world specifically in Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Polyamorous marriages have been in existence for centuries.Polygamy is classified into two categories, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygyny is the most popular type of polygamy, in this type of polygamousmarriage, a man is married to multiple women. On the other hand, polyandry which is the least familiar type of polygamy is where a woman is married to multiple husbands. The intolerance of Mormons in the United States has led to the outlawing of polyamorous marriages. The Morrill Anti Bigamy law of 1862 outlawed the practice of polygamy in the United States. While same–sex marriage is still the center of fierce debate and opposition from primarily religious conservatives, public opinion reflects a more tolerant social consensus. Despite this relatively recent legal trend of marriage law reform, same–sex relationships are obviously nothing new. Like same–sex relationships, polygamous relationships have also existed in the U.S. regardless of state recognition. Curiously, unlike same–sex marriage, virtually no significant progress has been made for legal recognition of polyamorous unions. One could argue that "poly–progress" is more than just stagnant, but moving in a negative direction considering Supreme Court rulings consistently upholding polygamy bans. Mainstream representation of polygamy, or debate and discussion on its merits seem virtually non–existent, save the occasional voyeurism of reality television shows or liberalism of "think–pieces" buried deep within online newspapers archives. Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person at the same time. This is not to be confused with an open relationship or an open marriage. This topic was viewed as controversial for years. As a practice that was not accepted in the public eye, it recently gained more attention with mainstream media and culture. Shows on television such as "Sister Wives" may pose questions if polygamy should be legally practiced, and it should not be. The stronger actions that law enforcement continues to take against polygamist communities are justified. In such cases, ladies were married off to men who already had wives and men with more than one wives got a lot of popularity. It is also believed that polygamy originated from religion. Although she speaks highly of it, she fails to realize that polygamy is not as feminist as she believes. Polygamy strongly enforces traditional gender roles and allows men to be lazy. Throughout her speech, Joseph speaks of, what she believes are, the positives of polygamy without realizing how non–feminist it is. She talks a lot about having a happy husband and children while still working, "My eight–year–old has never seen the inside of a day–care center, and my husband has ... • 35. The Mormon Polygamy INTRODUCTION When one thinks about marriages or weddings in the United States, Americans may often reminiscence on two individuals tying the knot. However, in the western United States, and in parts of Canada, more and more people are practicing polygamy, which is the act of an individual marrying another person(s), after one already has a spouse. Although the practice is illegal, individuals within the Fundamental Latter–Day Saints Church partake in the activity, as it is a divine part and calling of their religion. The FLDS is a break–off sect off the mainstream Mormon, or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints, Church. The Mormon Church originally practiced polygamy, up until The Manifesto, which was issued in 1890, by Wilford Woodruff, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have discovered this from my research, in addition to the lack of knowledge individuals have about the mainstream Mormon Church, the FLDS, and polygamy. Although the Mormon Church used to promote polygamy in the 19th century, they do not practice polygamy, at least in this lifetime, according to Miller. They are two separate entities, and many people get confused by this. I have seen this from my own personal experiences, when I say that I have family from the state of Utah. Many people believe that all that there is to do in Utah is have more than one wife. I am not certain on who needs to make sure that there is a line of difference between the Mormon Church and the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints, but there needs to be one if the Mormon Church wants separation from the FLDS ... Although it is not certain where the future of polygamy is headed, the controversial lifestyle is growing in popularity as more people explore their sexual and emotional identities. There is no doubt that as time goes on new generations develop different attitudes than their parents which in turn shapes the modern world we live in. This in part could be because of high divorce rates that many individuals have experienced either with their parents or someone they know. Cathy Meyer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Deboer Polygamy Analysis Despite Deboer's efforts on establishing several points in support of legalizing polygamy, many of his statements are evidently flawed. Now that gay marriage has been legalized he wants people to take on a new perspective pertaining to plural marriages. However he introduces his argument by stating "Polygamy today stands as a taboo just a strong as same–sex marriage was several decades ago "(Deboer). His outlook on both objectives is incorrect being that same –sex marriage and plural marriages are distinct in many different ways.unlike gay marriage polygamy deals with a larger number of spouses, meaning that a man can have 30+ if he wishes to.
