AO2 & AO4 Genre
1. The repertoire of elements
The repertoire of elements is the main parts of a film which is shown commonly
in a film/movie to allow audience to establish and understand the genre. Every
genre has a different set of elements which helps make up the genre, they are
split into different sections and then linked to one another to form the final
product. An example of this would be linking Iconography to the Style making the
genre clearer and easier to understand for audience.
My choice of film genre is action, crime, thriller as the are what i like to watch.
Some examples of films like the one I want to make would be Hit-man and
Mechanic resurrection, I could relate these two films to my opening sequence
because I'm basing mine on a action/thriller base mainly to enhance audience
interaction and help them engage with the opening sequence.
Narrative
Narrative is the way the different elements in a story are organized to make a
meaningful story. Some of these elements can be facts as in a documentary, or
characters and action as in a drama.
Narratives codes in action films are gun shots, fast pace scenes, death and
killings.
In my opening sequence I will use fast peace scenes, gunshots and many more
which link my film to the action genre.
Settings
This is the place and time at which the scene is shot and portrayed on the
screen. Setting is important because it shows the viewers where and what time
of the day the scene are shot. Dark rooms and abandoned warehouses are some
of the conventional setting for my genre.
I will follow abandoned ware houses because my movie lies towards it and its
suitable for my opening sequence.
I wont use other ones because they wont work well with my opening sequence.
Iconography
Iconography is what an audience expects to see on screen when they hear and
see unusual scenes.
They bring more meaning to the film because without them, the audience would
be left unsatisfied.
Guns and killings are my conventional iconography, I will uses elements such as
the ones Iv mentioned to enhance audience knowledge and understanding of the
genre I am trying to portray .
2. Style
Style is basically what kind of genre is going to be used and examples of it are
crime, thriller, comedy drama and fantasy.
The Style being used in my opening sequence is action, crime, thriller. I chose
this genre because it is what I prefer watching and I want to create something I'm
passionate about.
Themes
Themes are small aspects that build up to make a genre or are along.
Death, crime, love and heroism are some of the themes included in action.
Themes like vengeance, love and death are examples that will be included in the
opening sequence.
Audience.
When planning and writing a film it is important to think of who your target
audience will be and what might they like. Audience research is very necessary
when considering the demographic you’ll be marketing towards, this is due to
understanding audience preferences and aiming to for fill what the want to see.
