3. find at least one example you have used the
following conventional characters and features:
-Protagonists (central characters)
-Antagonists (villains)
-Themes (underlying messages)
-Settings
-Iconography (props, locations, character types)
-Visual style (way you filmed and editing your film)
-Enigmas (narrative events that remain to be resolved / or characters’
identities yet to be revealed)
4. Settings
Our thriller takes place
in the caves of a cold,
fortress of a maybe
conflictive era. Our
setting follows the
conventions of a thriller
as the fortress connotes
crime, violence and
entrapment; three of
the key words that are
associated with
thrillers. The fortress
was inspired from the
film shutter Island.
5. Antagonist
The main antagonist isn’t
seen in the opening of
our thriller but the guard
who is working for him is.
The uniform implies that
he is under orders, so is
still bad but I wouldn’t
call him the antagonist.
His costume is
conventional of a guard
as he is wearing a
military navy jacket,
which connotes violence.
If he were to be wearing
shorts and sandals then it
wouldn’t have been
conventional so harder
to create the character.
6. Protagonist
Our main character is
suggested to be the
protagonist as he
follows the same
conventional
characteristics shown
from protagonists- very
determined and strong
willed, yet also he
doesn’t follow the
conventions of an
antagonist as he panics
and is very
scared, which may
suggest he isn’t who we
thought he was.
7. Theme
Themes of entrapment
and imprisonment,
also the theme of
trying to escape are
conventional themes
of a thriller that are
also seen in
Shawshank
redemption. The
general theme of
imprisonment was
mostly inspired from
the film Shutter
Island.
8. Enigma
There are a few Enigmas
that run through the
opening sequence of Our
thriller. The main few are
conventional in a thrillerfor example Unknown is
based around the
audience and the
protagonist trying to solve
the mysteries. The
questions that my thriller
asks are:
-Why has he been
imprisoned?
-How is he going to
escape?
-What will happen next?
9. Visual style
The visual style is based
around POV (point of
view) shots, which put
the audience in the
protagonists position,
making the film feel
personal. This is quite
conventional as POV
shots are used in
thrillers such as Blair
with project.
10. iconography
The Iconography that I
have used is conventional
to thrillers. The two
example images include
the prop of a lit cigarette
and bars on a window.
The bars in the setting
link to the theme of
imprisonment. The
cigarette is used in many
thrillers, which makes it
conventional because it
implies the person
behind it isn’t innocent so
builds up the foundations
of the character.
