Injustice - Developers Among Us (SciFiDevCon 2024)

2. Narrative
The narrative of my opening sequence, I believe follows the codes and conventions
of thriller genre. The reason for this being because our narrative focuses on a
psychotic break down of an individual leading to the murder of an individual. This is
a typical story line of the thriller film genre.
Another theme included in my thriller opening is the main plotline which focuses on
a murder mystery that must be solved. This is a key convention of the murder
mystery thriller genre. This focuses on both crime and murder. This again is a
convention of the thriller genre. This focuses on both crime and murder. This again
is a convention of the thriller genre. Included in this narrative is the character of the
protagonist and the antagonist – again a typical of the thriller genre.
3. Characters
The characters that participate in my opening sequence fit the codes and
conventions of thriller film. The antagonist of our opening sequence keeps
their identity hidden through the use of mise-en-scene. This is a typical
convention of the thriller genre. This is done so the audience are left
questioning who the antagonist is and whether or not they have met them
yet.
The main character of the film is MS. Murphy, the character of the mother,
it’s the conventions of thriller genre. This is because she seeks to find the
truth in order to reach justice. This is a protagonist feature of the thriller
genre as they are seen to be ‘heroic’.
4. Continuation of previous slide…
However, the character of the mother is also
seen to be the murderer of her daughter
through the use of props/mise-en-scene (a
bracelet). This challenges the codes and
conventions of a thriller film as the ‘antagonist’
is really the ‘protagonist’. However this leaves
the audience asking questions, which is a
convention of the thriller genre. This connotes
that the mother must be psychotic must be a
psychotic breakdown. This is a convention of
this thriller genre, as there is a psychological
mind game which is occurring or has occurred.
The character of the police officer follows the
codes and convention of the thriller genre. This
is because of the crime, murder etc. feature of
the thriller genre. The police officer helps
convey to the audience that something
chaotic/bad has happened. This reveals to the
audience that crime has happened within this
narrative.
5. Setting
During my opening sequence I and my group have followed the
codes and conventions of the thriller genre. Firstly, where my
thriller film is set , is on an abandoned street. This setting is
included in the ‘CCTV’ where the character ‘Katie is last seen’.
This is seen to be an abandoned street as no one else is around,
apart from the killer. This will make the audience feel tense as
the character Katie playing the deceased believes she is alone.
6. Soun
dThroughout my opening sequence me and my group used a variety of
different sounds. The majority being a differentiation in music to enhance
the moods of characters resulting in the audience feeling different moods.
This assisted my group and I to set the right atmosphere for our thriller
opening. We used the sound of a piano playing over the police officer
addressing the mother of the deceased explaining that the murder
investigation has been closed. This helped create the sad emotion for our
character which presented her feelings. We also used music which creates
suspense and tension. We included this music in the scene of the
deceased being followed. This leaves the audience on the edge of their
seats, as they are unable to feel relaxed as the music builds up tension.
This is a typical convention of the thriller genre.
7. Prop
sI have reinforced the conventions of the thriller genre by using
the case study investigation information. This allowed my group
and I to create a scene which look realistic.
We also used a real police officers hat within our scene. This
was done to ensure the police officer character looks like a real
police officer.
