because it helped us progress towards providing for the common defense. During this time France

The Book is written by Adrian Tinniswood. Before I read the book I think pirates are rude and
violent men, after I read the book I think pirates can be romantic and living for pirates can be jolly.
There is always piracy on the sea since the days of commerce. Through the history of Europe,
especially in the seventeenth century, piracy become a part of European history. The pirates seemed
mysterious. Even in this wonderful book, there are not many part describes the pirates, it counties to
be mysterious. I think it leaves room for reader's imagination.
The geographical area in which piracy took place was mainly the Mediterranean. Barbary piracy
became a very threatening thing. There were many Muslim pirates attacked ships, enslaved crews,

At the start of the poem, the image of a happy, young, and perhaps rather naïve boy is placed before
us;

'Grinned at life in empty joy' suggests to us that he was pleased by anything, a happy carefree young

'Suicide in the Trenches' is evidence of this fact. The word 'trenches' further emphasizes that the
depression the young soldier feels is felt throughout all the trenches, and therefore many others in

The juxtaposition between the first two stanzas adds to the effect intended upon the reader by
Siegfried Sassoon. He wants us to feel the harsh reality of war; cold, unjust, harsh and depressing,
and the image of a happy young man driven to suicide by war certainly emphasizes this point. This
jarring contrast makes the boy's death a lot sadder and brings out sympathy in the reader.

One of the best known of the official military songs is the Marine Corps Hymn. And yet, no one
knows who made it or exactly how old it is. Legend has it that it dates back to the Mexican–
American War (1846–1848). It wasn't officially copyrighted until 1917 when W.E. Christian
published it in the book "Rhymes of Rookies" (Gutenberg.org). Even though we don't know its exact
origin, we do know what the song stands for and what it means. The hymn praises the idealism of
the Marine Corps and also looks back on historic moments Marines have dealt with and overcome.
Different parts of the Hymn refer to specific historical events. The first line "From the halls of
Montezuma" refers to when the Marines captured Chapultepec Castle in 1847 during the Mexican–
American War. The castle was in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico's capital. It served as a military
academy and also offered protection to the rest of the city. After its capture the treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo was signed and the war was over (history.com). This was one of the bloodiest battles in
Marine Corps history and the red stripe–called blood stripes–on the Marines dress uniform is to

The war of the Rif, also known as the second Moroccan War, was fought from 1920 to 1926. Spain,
France and the Moroccan Berbers, of the Rif's mountain region, had joined forces to take control
