2. The Encomienda System
The Spanish conquistadors believed that the native people of the
new world were pagan and savage.
The Spanish government decreed the Encomienda system to be
established in the new world; it signified the oppression and the
exploitation of the native indians.
The primary purpose of the Encomienda system was to
indoctrinate the natives in the Catholic faith.
