In the 16th century Portugal begins the European slave trade.
In the 1790s, the British attempt to establish a rival foothold
offshore but by the 19th century Portuguese coastline
territories prevail.

coasts for the Portuguese.
Off of the coast of Angola alone more than one million men,
women, and children are shipped across the Atlantic.
