9. • Existentialism is a recent and
youngest philosophy. It can be
said as 20th century
philosophy but failed to get a
wide recognition in the field
of education.

10. • Existentialism may be
described as a modern
philosophy primarily built
upon the work of
contemporary scholars of 20th
century.

11. ASSUMPTIONS-
EXISTENTIALISM
•The assumptions are
highlighted in the
following areas :
1. Man’s existence.
2. Self-knowledge.

12. 3. man is not complete.
4. No acceptance of ready
made concepts.

13. MAN’S EXISTENCE
• The starting point for all
existence is the recognition of
the individual existence. Man
makes himself through choices
among many alternatives in
the environment.

14. SELF-KNOWLEDGE
•The existentialist considers
“self-know thyself” as the
basic premise of this
philosophy.

15. FREEDOM &
RESPONSIBILITY
•The existentialist considers,
that each man has the
responsibility of creating his
own values and in doing so,
he chooses freedom &
responsibility.

16. MAN IS NOT COMPLETE
• According to existentialism a
man is not complete, he is in
the process of “becoming”.
Man is expected to meet
challenges, march on the
process of becoming a
complete man.

17. READY MADE CONCEPTS
•Existentialism believes
that a man cannot accept
ready made concepts of
existence forced upon him.
He is a free agent to shape
his own life.

EDUCATION
• Existentialism does not
contribute much to education.

IMPLICATIONS
•According to existentialism ,
the primary aim of
education is forming an
person who will intelligibly
make decisions.

should provide an
environment where the
individual finds security,
encouragement and
acceptance by teachers.

activities should present
opportunities for
development of human
beings.

22. 4. The role of a teacher is to
facilitate development or
originality and creativity by
providing necessary material
and equipment.

active and welcome
challenges to his ideas from
his learners.

24. 6. Democratic ideas must
pervade the school
environment in which the
students grow.

concern and respect for the
individual student.
Mechanization and
impersonality are to be
counteracted in the school.

26. LIMITATIONS
• The view points of
existentialism appear to be
impractical and inapplicable
in an industrial society.

27. •It requires a good deal of
time and effort on the part
of the teacher to develop
individual relationship
with student.

28. • The terminologies used in
existentialism is not clear.
Concepts such as “Being”,
“Person”, “Existence” are
ambiguous.
