Benefits of Space Exploration
The mysterious vastness beyond Earth has allured many scientists to explore and contribute much of their effort to the understanding of space.
Although humans have been looking up at space for thousands of years, the physical exploration of this frontier has been only going on for the past
few decades. Our current understanding of space is unparalleled to any time before in our history, but we still only know a small fraction of what
there is to learn. Governments around the world spend about $40 billion dollars a year (Rockefeller, 2010) hoping to undertake tasks such as "human
exploration of the solar system" to discovering the origins of life itself (Tatarewicz, 2009, p. 531). Recently, the private sector has also shown interest in
space exploration in order to engage in profitable activities such as harnessing minerals from asteroids. Although it is easy to debate about the benefits
and negatives of space exploration in its entirety, it is simpler focus on one aspect of it – the direct effect it has to those down on Earth. Rather than
trying to decide whether or not going to other planets is worth it, this paper will argue about the value of the terrestrial benefits of space exploration.
It is an important topic to think about as programs such as space exploration change lives and help acquire knowledge. Despite the large costs

thriving in our daily lives. One of his discussions that stand out to me the most is the discussion about if we could merge with robots in the future

general idea of how far scientists have advanced in the field of neuroscience research, the future of this research, as well as its implications on
humanity, society and universe at large. The author provides many examples and viewpoints that can further the reader's understanding of the future of
neuroscience research. However, in my opinion, this book consists of too many references to science fiction books and movies that distort or
undervalue the possibility or reality of possible future technologies.

Michio Kaku had to make the book three separate sections with multiple subsections to organize all his thoughts as a result. Due to the lack of depth
and analysis, my curiosity was not satisfied and I was left with so many questions. For example, I was curious to see how exactly some technologies
work such as optogenetics and how it can control behaviour and the mind. Also, the author was not as persuasive or convincing in terms of the
technologies he discussed being possible in the near future. This is because with many possible future technologies he mentioned such as the ability to
upload skills and memories, he relied on science fiction examples and relationships to movies like Inception and The Matrix. As interesting or
entertaining these examples were, they made me question the reality of the technologies and further implications of these technologies because
generally, things do not end well in those movies. In a way, it made me fear and hope these technologies are not present in the future because of the
conflicts the characters face in the movies.
In conclusion, The Future of The Mind was a fantastic book for casual readers who want to learn a bit more about neuroscience and its latest and
potential future breakthroughs. Michio Kaku organizes his thoughts in a wonderful way that allows readers get a better understanding and idea of
what he is talking about. Overall, I rated this book 4/5 because as a person with a background in neuroscience, this book lacked more analysis and
depth into certain concepts and how certain technologies actually

  • 1. Benefits of Space Exploration The mysterious vastness beyond Earth has allured many scientists to explore and contribute much of their effort to the understanding of space. Although humans have been looking up at space for thousands of years, the physical exploration of this frontier has been only going on for the past few decades. Our current understanding of space is unparalleled to any time before in our history, but we still only know a small fraction of what there is to learn. Governments around the world spend about $40 billion dollars a year (Rockefeller, 2010) hoping to undertake tasks such as "human exploration of the solar system" to discovering the origins of life itself (Tatarewicz, 2009, p. 531). Recently, the private sector has also shown interest in space exploration in order to engage in profitable activities such as harnessing minerals from asteroids. Although it is easy to debate about the benefits and negatives of space exploration in its entirety, it is simpler focus on one aspect of it – the direct effect it has to those down on Earth. Rather than trying to decide whether or not going to other planets is worth it, this paper will argue about the value of the terrestrial benefits of space exploration.
